hen two people are truly in love, there is no better way to witness its full effect than their wedding day. The way they smile, the way they will coo into each other’s ears, the way they lovingly look into each other’s eyes and the way they will keep sharing fond jokes and laughing heartily. All these situations and more were expressed at the Alice In Wonderland-themed, fairy-tale wedding between Temitope Oyepero Georgina Adebutu and Olujonwo Ajani Abraham Obasanjo. Their wedding, especially the reception was colourful, classy and simply spectacular. And what made the ceremony extra special was that apart from the couple’s dearest and closest, it was attended by Nigeria’s crème de la crème because the lovely couple are children of two powerful and distinguished Nigerian families.

While the dashing groom is the son of Nigeria’s former three time President and Statesman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and wife, Taiwo, the adorable bride is the daughter of rich businessman, philanthropist and Chairman, Premier Lotto, Sir Kesington Adebutu and wife, Princess Rosemary Da Costa. “Our wedding was magical. Everything was bright and beautiful. It was the best time of our lives, having friends and family with us from around the world there made the occasion extra special” according to Temitope, speaking about the 2-day celebration of love which was rounded off with that one-in-town, first-rate reception at the prestigious Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. So picture perfect was their big day in May 2017 that the couple were leads in a romantic movie that they scripted to their imagination. The beautiful bride wore her dream gown, an exquisite full-length haute couture number, hand-crafted by eclectic Beirut, Lebanon-based designer, Zaid Nakad. Their journey to the altar actually began many months ago as it is the norm with most African weddings. Theirs took off in December 2016 with the Introduction. It was a very cosy cultural ceremony where members of the Adebutu and Obasanjo families met. This ceremony was held at the imposing mansion of the bride’s father, Sir Kesington Adebutu located in highbrow, Ikoyi, Lagos and it was full of playful banter, graceful colours and sumptuous meals. An introduction, according to the Yoruba Customs and Tradition, is in form of a “Meet and Greet”, it is when the groom accompanied by her parents come to formally ask for the bride’s hand in marriage. The Obasanjo’s chose yellow as their colour for this occasion while the Adebutu’s chose blue. Sir Kesington Adebutu and his eldest son, Hon. Ladi Adebutu were perfect hosts as they were on hand to receive the Obasanjo family. Of Course, Chief Kenny Martins, the groom’s uncle, who introduced the pair over two years ago also led the Martins family to the occasion. The groom’s mother, Chief (Mrs.) Taiwo Obasanjo and sister, Mrs. Bunmi Obasanjo-Williams joined his father at the top of the line as they were warmly received and introduced to their hosts. There was a session of prayers, some dancing and loads of fun during the occasion. Everyone felt good and the couple too were unmistakably happy. The occasion was without much fanfare but a cordial and cosy affair. It was at the introduction, that the families begun the discussion of the finer details of the wedding proper-and for Temitope and Olujonwo the dates that the Lord had made were 11th and 13th May, 2017. And such dates are usually sacrosanct! The huge Ezekiel Adamu’s Balmoral Convention Centre, laid out on the lush green lawns of the Federal Palace Hotel was the place chosen by the families for the Traditional Wedding/Engagement. Everywhere was well decorated that afternoon, there were pipers, drummers and singers around the venue-it was a typical setting of festivity, fun and colour that are witnessed at such occasions. The bride’s family as expected arrived early and were comfortably seated awaiting the arrival of the groom and his family. The Master of Ceremonies known in Yoruba as Alaga Ijoko. set the event off with prayers and then it dovetailed into praises for the bride’s father, Sir Kesington Adebutu and her mother, Princess Rosemary Da Costa affirming that the lady the Obasanjo’s were coming to ask for her hand in marriage was properly groomed and excellently educated and thus, was a worthy jewel of inestimable value. Of course as it is the norm, her presentation was interspersed with songs and she also made some cash from the joyous guests. The Alaga Ijoko properly officiated and coordinated the initial proceedings to ensure that each provision of tradition is strictly adhered too. With all the preliminary issues dealt with, the groom’s family led by Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo were then invited into the arena. As expected, they did not just stroll in, they were accompanied by drummers and dancers. It was fun

and laughter all the way. After greeting the family members, former President Obasanjo was asked to pay proper obeisance to the bride’s family and in his usual jocular manner, he went on all fours to prostrate to the amazement and amusement of all present. He was immediately begged especially by Sir Kesington and the bride’s mother who rose from her seat to make her plea. Chief Obasanjo eventually did, greeted his new in-laws warmly, paid homage to the other guests who had come to the occasion before making his way to the area specifically designated for the groom’s family. The guests included Ogun State Governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Walter Carrington and wife,
Arese, former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and wife, Olufunke, former Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke, Senator Yinka Omilani, Prince Samuel Adedoyin and wife Oluwatoyin and Eleganza Chairman, Chief Rasak Okoya and wife, Chief (Mrs). Folashade. When everyone was settled, the Alaga then invited the groom-and his entry was grand! He came in a flowing Agbada, accompanied by his groom’s men all in snow white outfits. He had this confident smile on his face which was evidence that he was ready and happy for this journey to matrimony. Olujowon was invited to greet his in-laws and as a well-brought up Yoruba man who is steeped in the tradition, he did not hesitate before fully

prostrating to greet everyone. He was greeted with cheers. He also found time to "spray" the Alaga and dancers with some crisp notes befor he was showed with prayers by the Adebutu Family. Later, he also turned to his dear father, greeted him and also received a shower of blessings from him and his dear uncle, Chief Kenny Martins as well as others on their side of the hall. He was then ushered along with his friends to a special seating area prepared for the bride and groom-and siting like a true Prince Charming, he beamed with happiness. What could be termed the second segment of the ceremonies began when a new Master of Ceremonies called the Alaga Iduro took centre stage. Another session of prayers ensued before the
gorgeously-attired bride was then invited into the arena. Temitope was in full flow-dancing, laughing and seeping in every moment of the ceremony. When she got to the centre stage were all the elders and family members were gathered. The Alaga, asked her again, if she was ready for this journey, of course she answered yes with a smile on her face, that she was fully prepared to be joined to the love of her life. She then approached her dad and the respected business mogul spent time praying for her. The prayer session with her mother was particularly moving, one could see the bond and love between the two, they held each other more like friends as Princess Rosemary Da Costa blessed her daughter. Other elders of the

family also took turns in praying for the bride. That was not all, with her veil still covering her lovely face, the bride gingerly turned to the section occupied by the Obasanjo family, she knelt down like a properly nurtured Lady and was showered with prayers too. After the prayers and a ses sion of photographs, she joined her husband in their special sitting area. In no time, the bride was urged to pick the best out of all the gifts that had been brought for her and the family, and without any hesitation, she picked the Holy Bible to the delight of all present. It was after this, that she and her husband placed their hands on the Bible, prayed and later, a
delighted Olujonwo slipped a sparkling ring on the finger of Temitope. The next item on the agenda was reading of the engagement letter. This was one of the evidences that this wedding was extra-ordinary and was painstakingly planned. The letter, in form of a silvery scroll, was delivered a in shoe-like package that was laid on a light green package and presented in see-through glass box. It was then presented by the Obasanjo family to the bride’s family and was received by Princess Rosemary DaCosta, who in turn went on her knees and presented same to the bride’s father and Governor Ibikunle Amosun. They were all smiles as the content of the letter was read.

The main meat of the letter was that they had come to take the hand of Temitope in marriage and of course there was a positive response from the other side, and both families soon came together, exchanged pleasantries and were joined by the couple for photographs. The newly-wed couple according to Yoruba Customs and Tradition were then introduced to the house before they went on to cut their lovely cake. The cake was a 4-tier creation sculpted like suitcases, with coral beads popping out of the one at the top while the one at the base had the famous distinctive insignia of Louis Vuitton. This very cultural occasion soon dove-tailed into full scale dance session while the bride went on to change to a full regalia of an Anioma (Delta State) maiden, in honour of her mother. She then hit the dancefloor, accompanied by friends, family and guests-and everyone was truly entertained till well into the night.
Ecstatic mother of the bride, Princess Rosemary DaCosta
When the bride Temitope woke up on May 13, 2017, the first thing she did was to pray. She prayed that God should take control and make the day a huge success. This was the day that the Lord had made for their solemnisation and just as she had hoped for, it turned out a very grand soar-away success that far surpassed her expectations. Apart from her friends, who were around her, one of the first callers was top-rate make-up artist and CEO of BMPro, Mrs. Banke Meshida-Lawal. The bride had revealed that he had told Banke, who has been a family friend, that when she would get married, she would be the one in charge of the moment-and since D-Day was here, Banke was on ground with her team and began work very early. Also, her stylist, the celebrated Ugo Igbokwe, MD/CEO of Make Me Beauty Salon had also had a long notice and so he was excited that Temitope’s big day had arrived. No wonder when the bride was ready with her
lovely flowing Ziad Nakad wedding gown, her makeup was flawless and she was looking resplendent like a Queen who was on her way to see her King. She was joined by her little bride, Oluwadasimi Adebutu, flower girls, Tamilore Adebutu and Busola Adebutu as well as confetti girl, Mofaratiloluwa Williams and helped out by Zainab Usman-Katsina (Bride’smaid) and Temilola Rasaq-Lawal (Maid of Honour) Her mum again strolled in to meet her, and mother and daughter spent time together before she stepped out in her specially-crafted Manolo Bahnik shoes to meet her dear dad. Meanwhile, a few metres away, Olujowon, the groom more or less followed the same routine, he prayed and was joined by his brother, Seun Obasanjo and the groom’s men: Alvin Ezeala, Folake Olowofoyeku, Sadiq Umar Abduallahi, Samaila Poloma, Asuquo Ekpeyong Jr, Oluwaseun Dania, Babatunde Adebutu, Oludayo Obasnjo, Oba Olubiyi Obasanjo, Daniel Imoh Imeh, Habeeb Alebiousu,

Rotimi Williams, Olatoye Are and Olakunle Williams, After adorning their smart suits, they headed straight for Methodist Church of the Trinity, Tinubu Square, Lagos to await the arrival of the bride. The bride and her father, Sir Kesington were chauffeur-driven to the ceremony in a gleaming 2017 Rolls Royce Phantom with the inscription “Bride” written on the number plate. Her bride’s maids:Oluwatosin Adebutu, Oluwaseyi Adebutu, Temilola Okunoren, Nenna Greg-Eru, Adedoyin Ojora, Emebizie Okonkwo, Jennifer Adighije Okolo and Folake Olowofoyeku all took different exotic cars. On arrival at the church, the bride was welcomed by very colourful Anioma traditional dancers. She was
full of smiles as she stepped out with her dad and they walked slowly, arm-inarm into the church as the congregation were singing the procession hymn “Praise to the Lord, The Almighty”. Father and daughter walked all the way to the front of the church where the Officiating Priest was on the pulpit, while the groom was waiting by the altar. Sir Kesington then handed the bride to her groom-and the solemnization proceeded without much ado. The highpoint of the session of prayers, praises and songs was when the bride and groom were told by the Minister to face each other, with their right hands joined and then they took their wedding vows.

Then the ring bearer, Modebareoluwa Williams was invited and he brought the ring which was presented in an open Bible, and after showering prayers the Minister handed the ring to Olujuwon who then declared “With this ring, we pledge ourselves to each other, full realizing what we are doing; and we rely upon God’s enabling grace for the fulfilling of our vow and convenant. In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Temitope also took her turn. Then the Minister made the couple join their right hands in a firm grip, he
48
raised it to heaven and then pronounced “In as much as Olujonwo Ajani Abraham and Temitope Oyepero Georgina have together made their covenant before God and this congregation, they have made their vows to each other, and have shown their consent by joining their hand and by receiving of rings, I therefore, pronounce them to be husband and wife in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen” Those who God has joined together, let no man put asunder.”

Groom with bride’s parents
He then urged the couple to kneel by the altar and he prayed for the newly-wed!When the couple were back on their feet, the whole church erupted in cheers and applause! The couple and their families later signed the marriage register and certificate, the certificate was later presented to the couple and the solemnization was rounded off with a recessional hym: “Through the Love of our Saviour, All will be well”. With her arm tenderly resting on her husband’s shoulders, as they were making their way out of the church into the bright sunshine, there was no doubting that Temitope is as in love with Olujonwo as he is with her. Love was truly in the air! With magnificent chandeliers, eclectic lighting scheme, a stage which mimics an impressive classic castle complete with greek-style columns plus a giant eye-popping Cake By Tosan cake, the superlative reception décor handled by Furtullah was set. Of course the venue was none other than the prestigious Eko Hotel Convention Centre. It was obvious from the sheer glamour and colour of the reception venue that wedding planner, Mrs Funke Bucknor-Obruthe of Zaphaire Events had gone the extra mile to ensure the couple had a magical reception. In terms of content and entertainment, the event organizers, knowing full well that the bride is a stickler for excellence ensured that every aspects was superlative. So, when the charming couple arrived, they were

enchanted by the lovely, colourful venue; They were indeed in the midst of a fantasy island that they had created! As lovely music boomed from the wheels of steel courtesy of one of the oldest and best DJs in Nigeria, Freshwaves, the couple, led by the bridal party, danced into the arena. The stress of the whole occasion paled into insignificance as the couple grooved to different tunesit was such a lively sight to behold. Proceedings proper began with a prayer by Senator Yinka Omilani. King of Comedy, Ali Baba was Master of Ceremonies-and he handled the event with so much expertise that there was no dull moment. It was Ali Baba who invited the couple to the stand, to cut their out-of-this-world cake crafted by Tosan Jemide of Cakes by Tosan. It was amidst jokes, banter and laughter with the battery of photographers that they cut the cake and went on to feed each other. Later, the couple danced with their parents, and went on to change to other outfits. The king of World Beats, King Sunny Ade and DJ Freshwaves were in full flow when they returned to the dance floor and danced for hours. According to the bride, the whole wedding was a dream come true. She thanked her dad for giving her a blank cheque to ensure that she had everything she desired “It was the ultimate, and I thank God and everyone who came or helped make my husband I have such a spectacular day.It was magical and breathtaking”!
GROOM SPEAKS
Just before they stepped into their reception, Ovation’s Daala Oruwari had this chat with the dashing groom. Tell us about yourself I am a farmer How do you feel today Elated, excited and great. What made you decide that she was the woman that you wanted as wife Look at her, if you were a man won’t you go for something like this, Isn’t she so beautiful? The qualities I discovered are many but let me say a few. She is a wonderful, humble and beautiful person and honestly she is my better half. How did you meet We met two years ago, and we met through my uncle. It has been on and off for a while but we have been getting on strong. I have always known I had a good woman and when you have a good thing you have to hold it down as Beyoncé will say. She is mine to keep and cherish. The hall is so packed, was this what you were expecting This wedding reception has surpassed our expectations. We want to thank God and our parents. We want to thank all those who have come to share this wonderful day with us. Words cannot express how we feel right now and we are just glad that this day has come and this is the beginning of our lives. A great beginning. 57

MRS. TEMITOPE OBASANJO INTERVIEW WITH BRIDE,
Days after their lovely, nuptial, Michael Effiong, Editor, OVATION International met the bride at the hilltop home of the Obasanjo’s in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Temitope was the only one available as Olujonwo was hurrying off to Lagos for a business meeting. The interview was as engaging as it was revealing How have you been enjoying marital life We thank God, It has been a worthwhile experience because marriage itself is an institution that has been ordained by God. We thank God that in its characteristic manner it is an institution that two people from different backgrounds, different upbringings come together and they become one under the banner of God. Marital life has been very challenging, adjusting to this new life has not been easy, but again, everything is challenging in life and it is up to you to face it, and so far we have faced it and loving every moment. What has made it very worthwhile has been the kind of person my husband is. My husband is very accommodating, very caring and very loving. How has the transformation been for you The transformation has been a very dramatic change from what I have been used too. Instead of caring for one person, I am now caring for two people, I have to wake up earlier than usual to get myself ready for work and to make sure his breakfast is served before I leave. And when I come back from work, I have to make sure dinner is ready, so it has been a very dramatic change and I can no longer be selfish I have to consider the fact that there are now two of us because during the wedding the priest said ‘’ Marriage is a mystery that instead of one plus one that gives you two in a mathematics, in marriage, one plus one is equal to one”. I reflect on that statement all the time. What did you see in Olujonwo that made you decide that he was the one that you wanted to spend rest of your life with My darling Olujonwo, is from a very good stock
both from maternal and paternal side. His mom is of the Martins family of Abeokuta and his dad is from the Obasanjo family in Abeokuta but you will find out that Juwon is not someone that places reliance on what his parents can do for him or even his dad as a former president of Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is his own man, very independent and he doesn’t wait for anybody to do stuff for him. He will tell you ‘’ I have my own two hands, I have my two legs, I have a brain’’ why does he have to wait for anybody to empower him? He is a strong-willed person, very hardworking, determined and very respectful and he has friends that cut across different age groups and different strata of life because he is very humble and he doesn’t look down on people. These qualities endeared him to me at
the very early stage of our courtship. My husband is not one to rely on his father’s wealth. A very down-toearth, easy-going guy. Someone whom you can share jokes with. He is so many things rolled into one. How did you meet?I heard you were introduced in a blind date Yes we were introduced, but I don’t know about the blind date part (laughs heartily). This issue has been over flogged by the media but let me set the records straight. We were introduced by his uncle, Chief Kenny Martins, who is our family friend, he is indeed close to my dad. I am sure he saw something in me that he felt, I would be a good wife for his nephew. He started it, we met, began a discussion and then it all flowed from there and now we are husband and wife.

You have said a lot of good things about your husband, what don’t you like about him I would say that he works too hard. Imagine we had this interview today in Abeokuta, this is a weekend but he has left me and gone off to a business meeting in Lagos. Tell us about your reaction when you eventually met his parents I met his mom first, and she was very warm, very receptive, and very nice even till now we share a good relationship. For his dad, he is very amazing. I had always read about him in the papers.Who does not know President Obasanjo? He is an international icon so to speak and when I met him I got endeared to his personality. He has a larger than life personality and he is funny. He makes you feel so at home and welcome. He has no airs around him especially someone who has been Nigeria’s No.1 citizen. He is very accommodating and has a charming personality. It was jokes all round the day he went to introduce me to his dad. I have received the best support ever from daddy Obasanjo and I am very grateful to God about that. Tell us about your wedding. Did you set the dates or the family did I don’t think as a bride, I have the temerity to set a date for my wedding especially coming from a house like the Adebutu family. Since weddings in our tradition is the bride’s family that receives the groom’s family, we set the date and determined many things like time and venue concerning the wedding. Those dates were chosen by my dad. I had wanted us to hold the engagement and main wedding one week apart, so I can rest after one before embarking on the other. I did not want a two day interval. But my dad said because he is the one planning, that it will be impossible. He said he had friends that are going to arrive Nigeria from all parts of the world and it will be impossible to keep them here for that long. That was how we ended up having the engagement on Thursday and wedding on Saturday. I planned the wedding with my dad because he gave me a free hand as to the
68
vendors that I wanted ; where I wanted to get my dress, who I wanted to do my flowers, who I wanted to make the cake, who I wanted to plan the event. My dad gave me the opportunity to plan my dream wedding, I thank God for his life and may God continue to bless him. He financed everything all the way, more like giving me a blank check. He was also on top of things too, always checking to see that things were smooth. Imagine before the wedding, while I was still praying at dawn, he was at the reception venue to see that things were going on fine. He also paid attention to the guest list. We like to thank God that the wedding even surpassed our expectations. The dates were accepted by both families Yes it was. I know where you are going with the dates.Everyone agreed, and we began preparartions. It may even interest you to know that this was the second date. My father changed his mind, we would have done it earlier. Now, let’s discuss your stunning dress My dress came from Beirut, Lebanon, I went all the way to Beirut, Lebanon with my mom to get my dress by a designer who dresses Hollywood stars and celebrities his name is Ziad Nakad. How did you meet the designer I always wanted a Lebanese designer to make my wedding dress when I mean designer, I mean Haute Couture because they make the best wedding dresses without prejudice to the designers in United Kingdom, Italy or France. Lebanese designers usually allow their imaginations to go wild. Along the line, I had gone to Elie Saab showroom in Paris, I looked around and I thought to myself, why don’t I support someone else that might be as good but not as celebrated, So I began my research and ended up with Ziad Nakad. I called his showroom in Lebanon, they told me they come to Dubai periodically and I can meet them there, but the days they gave me were not favourable, I now had to start making plans to travel with my mom to Beirut, Lebanon to see them. And was the trip worth your while Of course, the dress was simply amazing.
Everyone loved it. How long did all the planning take I will say six months because from November I started planning for the introduction in December but I was also making some plans towards the wedding in May. So I will say it took us six months to plan the wedding. Tell us about yourself I am actually a shy person but I have now found myself in a profession where I have to talk, listen, read and write at the same time and also I have to be firm and fair as well as make decisions that the outcome can possibly affect people’s lives. I am a very open and very honest person, I don’t like to hurt people and I always want everybody around me to be happy, freespirited. I believe in goodness, I believe that whatever you do to people will always come back to you and it is always good to be good to people, to be respectful, to be humble and to help humanity in all ways that you can. How was growing up for you I grew up as an only child of my mom but I have a lot of older siblings from my dad and the beauty of growing up in the Adebutu house was that if we don’t tell you the difference it will be very hard to find out who your mother really is. We are all close. I am very close to my elder siblings and for a very long time I was the last child till my twin brothers came along, so I am always getting what I wanted because I was the last child for a long time (laughs heartily). My dad brought us all up to bond and relate with one another. The children don’t even want to know what is wrong with their mom and dad, we are just united and we look out for one another. So, that is the kind of upbringing that I had with my siblings and my elder siblings are always looking out for me. Does you surname open doors Yes it does open doors for me and I will like to say at this juncture that I am very proud of my dad. My dad is one of the few Nigerians that I can beat my chest to say that he never received a government contract yet he supports the causes of government, and is a tireless philanthropist of note.

My dad will tell you that he has been a Lagos titled Bwari, Abuja and an LLM in Public & International chief since the 70s, he was the Babalaje of Lagos and Law from University College London. I am presently when he became the Olotu of Lagos his best friend of a Magistrate at the Ogun State judiciary sitting in blessed memory, Chief Solomon Adebayo Ayoku now Abeokuta. became the Babalaje of Lagos, after the Olotu he is Lets get back to the wedding. Your event planner now the Asoju Oba of Lagos. etc My dad treasures and cherishes a good name more The beautiful thing about my weddding was that than even silver or gold so he will tell you that he will most of those I used, I had informed long before hand. not do anything that will bring his name to disrepute For example, Cakes By Tosan had always baked cakes that is what we have been able to enjoy as that is the for my birthdays and we had planned that he will up advantage we derive for having the Adebutu name, the ante whenever I was going to get married. Banke before I got married. Yes my dad’s name opens doors Meshida-Lawal, a make-up artist of note had always for me. Everybody always has good things to say about worked for the family; she too was ready for my Sir Kesington Adebutu.. wedding. In the case of Zapphaire Events, we had not Mrs. Debbie Captan-Duatey, President J.D. Mahama & Mr. Alex Duatey used her in the house before, but she was an What of schooling I went to Santa Maria Nursery and Primary school acquaintance, and we decided to go with her. The for primary education and I went to my very great Wedding Store handled all the stationery. The Wedding citadel of learning, Vivian Fowler Memorial College Store had always handled such matters for the family for girls. My proprietress from secondary school who I in the past. For KSA and Ebenezer Obey, their fondly and still call Mama Chief, Chief (Mrs.) Leila relationship with my dad dates back many years. Fowler laid a very good foundation for us and she Maybe you should just take us through who did always taught us to ask ourselves ‘’Who am I’’ that is what at your wedding the operative question to always serve as a barometer Apart from the ones I have already mentioned, the when planning to take any decision in life. The metre décor for both engagement and wedding was handled to measure where we are in life, where we are expected by Décor by Furtullah, my traditional outfit was Odio to be and where we are coming from so nobody should Oseni for Odio Mimonet, my traditional Aso Oke was ask you who you are and you are mumbling and supplied by Mrs. Ayanbedejo for Ayaba by Patrick stuttering, it means that you are not really grounded. Ayanski, My family Aso-ebi was by Mrs Morayo I believe secondary schools are really the Ishola of SAS Fabrics, my wedding Aso-Ebi Bella’s foundation of life. When I look back at my alma mater Fabrics was by Mrs Kemi Adamu of The Fabric Room, after so many years, I have fond memories of those Bride’s Party Couture was handled by Toju Foyeh, my times. husband’s suit was by Korede Roberts of Fusion while I had my university education at University of Kimono Fashion handled the groom’s men suits. Of Lagos, Akoka that is my first degree, a Bachelors in course, my official photographer was Kelechi AmadiLaw with honours, a BL from Nigeria Law School, Obi and should I add, my favourite Magazine, 78
OVATION was there (laughs heartily). Ok, I want to take you back to D day, recall the feeling when the Minister pronounced you both husband and wife I was very elated because I am presently 33 years old. In as much as I was chasing a career, I always wanted to be married into a good family and to a good man, everything just fell into place. It was a very emotional moment for me, I was teary-eyed, I was like, thank God at last!. I am very grateful to God because my wedding was the testimony of prayers answered. Therefore, I want to use my marriage as an encouragement to people who are my age or older especially in our society that puts pressure on females to get married on time, that there is always hope. God is never late. His time is always the best. From age 25, people start to disturb you that it is getting late. Then the talk gets worse when you cross 30. So you had pressure from your family Yes o, it was not pressure in a bad way but out of love. By thirty I was still prayerful and waiting and I didn’t want to marry the wrong person because I wanted to marry for the right reasons. My dad being a Yoruba traditional man had always put pressure and at the slightest opportunity, he will sneak in the marriage issue. There was a day he told me ‘’ You need an umbrella ‘’ and even my mom kept praying and we thank God everything has worked together for good for those who love God and those that are called according to His purpose. God is never late. He is always on time and I encourage people never to lose hope on God.

What moment stood out for you For the engagement, my mom had promised to bring some Anioma Dancers because my mom is from Ibusa in Delta State of Nigeria. In those days when we used to visit my grandmother of blessed memory in Ibusa. She used to take me to events where people were singing and dancing the Anioma dance. So, I really love Anioma music and dance steps. So my mom had promised that she was going to bring some Anioma people to sing and dance, so when I went to change to my Anioma attire, wearing my beads, my coral hat, the whole works, it was so wonderful to see the dancers and of course, I swayed to the music. At the engagement, I also enjoyed the performance of Ebenezer Obey. Baba Obey was there to serenade us.

His songs I could sing for hours because they are very deep, spiritual and inspirational, this was the influence of my dad. To have him perform for us at the engagement was so beautiful. For the wedding I got more than what I envisaged because what I was planning especially the Gazebo I wanted a castle because the theme of the wedding was ‘’ A Fairy Tale Wedding ‘’ so we were looking at vintage and classic backdrop. The end result was stunning. I was involved with planning even the little details as to what my Aso-ebi Bella’s will wear, the colours for both events, colours for the Aso oke, for the rotation, to the detailing on my dress, to the detailing on the cake and if you watch correctly you will see that there was a synergy in everything,

so the Aso-oke for the wedding was turquoise blue and orange, the cards were turquoise blue and orange, the souvenir bags were turquoise blue and orange, the colour code for the engagement was coral and gold, the Aso oke was coral and gold, the decor was coral and gold. For the wedding we wanted white and gold, white and gold are two neutral colours they can go with anything, the invitation and stationery used these colours. It seemed you were involved in everything This was my one and only wedding, I had to give it my best shot. I was on top of everything. Till three days before the wedding, I was still making arrangements.
The programme had gone to press but every other thing maybe a week before the wedding was still under constant review. I am a perfectionist or I wish I were because nobody is perfect, only God is perfect but if there was a way we could strive to reach perfection I will like to say I am a perfectionist. So all those nitty gritty details, the buck stopped at my table. At the wedding I think I loved the Gazebo, I loved the fact that the VIP table was created in the form of a table in Camelot, you know when King Arthur was sitting at the round table with his generals. I like the way that DĂŠcor by Furtullah and Zapphaire Events interpreted our idea. The backdrop of the wedding stage was amazing. There

were some flowers that were hanging down as ceilings over the dance floor and the lighting effect was just out of this world. How many kids are you planning to have I will like to have as many kids as God will give me (laughs heartily). But bearing in mind the present economic realities I will like to say maybe four children, so you can give them you very best. Have you discussed this with your husband Yes, I think I have mentioned it to him and let’s just say we will be happy with whatever God gives us but just so
94
that we can be careful as well, we want children that we can cater for very well and I believe four will be nice. What philosophy drives you I think the greatest philosophy I have of life is that nothing good comes easy and you always have to work hard for what you believe in because you might not appreciate it if they are handed over to you on a platter of gold. But if you have some stories to tell, some bridges to cross, some rivers to swim past then you are happy that at least you worked for something in your life and have something to show for it as opposed to having everything easy.

THE HAPPY FATHER OF THE BRIDE: ASOJU OBA OF LAGOS, SIR KESINGTON ADEBUTU
My dad treasures and cherishes a good name more than even silver or gold so he will tell you that he will not do anything that will bring his name to disrepute that is what we have been able to enjoy as that is the advantage we derive for having the Adebutu name. -Mrs. Temitope Obasanjo

So I will like to say that the greatest philosophy that drives me is you have to work and struggle to become somebody in life, you cannot just sit down and accept good things, everything good will come but be in the process of working towards it while its coming. Do you have a favourite food Yes, Jollof rice with plantain, guinea fowl and prawns What about your husband My husband has traditional taste. He loves beans, the kind of beans like we say here with seven lives. Ewa Asepo elemi meje. Beans with prawns, fish, shawa, you know the whole works. Any words for your guests I like to say that I am very grateful and to use this medium to appreciate everybody that came from far and wide because I excpected a grand wedding but what I got was a wedding that had thousands of people at the wedding reception. It was amazing. I thank them for their presence and their prayers. The hall was so packed that it was later I called people to say ‘’I think I saw you’’ because it was very overwhelming and I thank God that everybody came in good stead and left in good stead, we didn’t hear of any bad report, everybody went back to their homes safely. I am very grateful that God decided to bring his words to pass because God doesn’t say anything that He will not accomplish. So the word of God doesn’t go back void but He accomplishes that which He says. I thank God that His words concerning my family life, His word concerning my marital life and that of my husband was fulfilled in our lifetime through this wedding and that He did it in such a special way that it even exceeded
our expectations. We are very grateful that the two families have become one and we are hoping that it will be a union that will last forever and have good report. What has your mum told you about marriage, what tips did you get from her My mom is old school about marriage and life generally I was still thinking about that this morning, it must be serendipity that you mentioned it in this interview. At least eighty percent of everything that I have come to understand about life had been through my mom because she has made it very simple. I once read a book that talks about life as a school you will never graduate from and even on the day one passes on you are still learning. So what I have come to understand about life at my age is that everything that I have become today is very much attributed to my parents. My dad has played a great part and being an only child, my mum is my closest confidante. We are so close that when we go out people think we are sisters. She will be the one to say, don’t mind her she is my daughter. My mom has taught me that the husband is the head of the house and he is always the crown of his wife so marriage is what you make of it. You have to be submissive to your husband, you have to be patient because there are a lot of forces that are hoping and waiting that the marriage fails. My mum has also trained me that the only way you can overcome all travails in life is by being in the place of prayer and she told me even categorically on my engagement when she was praying for me that I should never forget my prayers, I should embrace patience, humility and we should put God first in our marriage.
