hen Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode took the oath of office on May 29th 2015 as the Governor of Lagos state, he promised a new Lagos; a Lagos that will compete with any major capital in the world. A Lagos that will enjoy an unraveled strategic position in West Africa and indeed the continent. A Lagos that is safe and friendly. A Lagos, to use the words of the Governor, where you can “fly in, start your business, find your way; live, work and enjoy”. Certainly these were ambitious promises from a man who had come into prominence like his successor with little political experience. But those who know him say he is a man of few words but plenty of action-therefore, it was no surprise that everyone was keen to see him rev into action from the get go. But months after that swearing in fanfare, for some inexplicable reasons, Lagos, the bubbly Centre of Excellence had suddenly hit a state of inertia. Security was at an all-time low, the roads were in terrible shape, the environment was overtaken by weeds.Things had literarily fallen apart. Many began to wonder what was happening to their dear Lagos? And those who were buoyed by Ambode’s slogan “I am coming to change Lagos” were wondering when he would start his journey. On the streets, ordinary folks were whispering in pidgin “E be like say we don enter one chance o?” Which meant effectively, “ is it not possible that we had made a mistake? Everywhere you turned, it was complaints, criticisms, hue and cry galore! Just like the typical Lagos football fan, the typical Lagos resident has zero patience for inaction. But it seemed Governor Ambode as a thoroughbred Administrator was spending those few months studying his handover notesand laying out his unique plans. Indeed, according to him “You cannot run a four year marathon at top speed from the onset. Like any other wellbred CEO, I have put in place all the ingredients needed to run a successful race.” In his speech during a town hall meeting on October, 2015, Governor Ambode made the following assertion: “This government has decided to change from the traditional “100 Days Address” to an interactive Quarterly Report. This Quarterly Town Hall Meeting is one of the many platforms we have designed to enable us to bring government closer to our people, to enable us come together and rub minds on salient issues bordering on the overall improvement and development of our State. Just as we did during the electioneering period, we will come to you to collectively appreciate your challenges, jointly proffer solutions to them as well as identifying areas requiring government attention in the var-

ious localities in order to guide our actions.” He noted while rounding off the speech: “What we have done in the first quarter is to lay down the institutional framework for the smooth running of the government for the next Three and Half years. What we have done can be described as laying the foundation on which the service and programmes of this government will be built. Ever since then, the astute Accountant and Financial Expert, has made good his promises, thereby transforming the city of Lagos to the haven, which Lagosians are beginning to

cherish.

Even while the pressure on him to perform was at its utmost, he stated confidently:“Our vision is to make Lagos globally competitive in all sectors. We are on the way to building a Lagos that is safe, clean and prosperous. Lagos will become a land of opportunities offering prosperity for all as we surmount the challenges. With this vision in mind, we have set out to implement long-term plans and programmes that will lead Lagos on the path to becoming a truly competitive City-State. The results of our programmes will not become evi-

dent in the first quarter but soon enough Lagosians will feel the effects and buy into this vision.” According to the Governor, the overall policy thrust of the administration remains security, infrastructural development and job creation because they would attract more investments from local and foreign interests, create more jobs and generate more taxes and revenue for the government From that shaky start, he is now firing on all cylinders; cruising to dizzying heights with lofty and innovative initiatives. And Lagosians are smiling again: enjoying peaceful sleep because of first-rate security architecture, well-lit streets, less traffic as a result of better law enforcement and upgraded roads and much more. Consequently, nine months later, the plans of the Governor are yielding

good fruits…

SECURITY The government has invested massively to reenergize and reinvigorate the State security infrastructure to bring it to a level comparable to what obtains in other modern City States. The full security equipment procured by the Governor include: 100 four-door saloon cars, 55 Ford Ranger Pick-Ups, 10 Toyota Land Cruiser PickUps, 15 BMW Power Bikes, 100 other Power Bikes, Isuzu Trucks, three Helicopters, two Gun Boats, 15 APCs, Revolving Lights, Siren and Public Address System, VehicularRadio Communicators, Security Gadgets including Bullet Proof Vests, Helmets, Handcuffs, uniforms, kits, and improved Insurance and Death Benefit Schemes for the police. Handcuffs, uniforms, kits, and improved Insurance and Death Benefit Schemes for the police. The state also paid out the sum of N1, 000, 000 as claims to each of the two deceased officers of the Rapid Response Squad who died in active service. Also the RRS was rebranded in order to give the squad a new identity for effective and efficient service delivery. By this singular act, the Governor revealed“I am happy to report that our State is a lot safer today as statistics show that crime rate reduced by 65% during the last quarter compared to Year 2014.”

LIGHT UP LAGOS PROJECT This was initiated to curb crime, which ordinarily thrives best in darkness. The project lights up major roads, highways and inner roads. In December 2015, the administration set up an Advisory Committee on Power chaired by the

“Our vision is to make Lagos globally competitive in all sectors. We are on the way to building a Lagos that is safe, clean and prosperous. Lagos will become a land of opportunities offering prosperity for all as we surmount the challenges. Deputy Governor to work to fulfill the promise of lighting up every nook and cranny of the state. “In the past few months, we have fixed street lights from Berger in Ojodu to Lekki, Ikorodu to Lagos Island, the entire Ikeja axis, Victoria Island and Ikoyi. We are taking this project to every part of the state. If we are not yet in your neighbourhood, give us a little time; we will soon be there. As we light up the state, we expect crime to reduce as criminals will have nowhere to hide and operate,” the governor said. In the last quarter of 2015, the Lagos State Government donated 49 transformers to communities that had been in total darkness for five years. In addition, electricity has now been restored to 63 communities starting from Eleko to Ode-Omi in Ibeju Lekki Local Government.

A 33kva Electrical Sub-Station was also commissioned in Gberigbe Community, Ikorodu, and it is expected to improve the electricity situation in that axis.

INFRASTRUCTURAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT The Ambode administration has devoted ample time to infrastructure development and enhancement, rehabilitating roads and other social amenities as the following depicts.

ROADS As part of efforts to improve road infrastructure, in the last quarter the Ambode administration embarked on massive reconstruction and rehabilitation of major roads and inner roads across the metropolis. “I am delighted to inform you that over 300 major road projects have been rehabilitated. 66 major road

EDUCATION As education happens to be the life wire of every society, the Ambodeled administration is not leaving anything to chance in this regard. It has therefore, appointed Governing Councils for all tertiary institutions in the state as well as signed the amended Lagos State University bill and approved the appointment of a Vice Chancellor for the institution. A Provost has also been appointed for Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Otto Ijanikin. This is in a bid to make tertiary institutions in the state centres of excellence in all ramifications. The state hasalso undertaken the rehabilitation of schools, construction of new classroom blocks and provision of furniture to the tune of N2.5billion. This was funded jointly with the Federal Government under the UBEC scheme with the state adding an additional N526m. The administration has come up with a new design of modern all-inclusive blocks of classrooms for the secondary schools to provide a conducive environment for learning. The Central Senatorial Zone stands to benefit from this tremendously.

AGRICULTURE In furtherance of the ‘back to land’ dictum, the Ambode administration has recreated the interest in farming through the following initiatives: • Training of 66 participants comprising graduates, entrepreneurs, retirees, school leavers, poultry farmers at the Oko Oba Farm Service Centre. • Empowerment of 70 stakeholders in the value chain at various centres with the provision of coconut oil processing equipment. • Delivery of state-of-the-art processing equipment from Malaysia for production of certified coconut oil and desiccated oil. budget officers on the innovation’s implication. • Provision of a platform for single view of Lagos State Government revenue and expenditure account balances. • Pilot roll-out of single billing platform with integration of all payment channels among many others.

SOCIAL RE-ORIENTATION The administration has set up a channel through which abused individuals can report cases to the government. About 190 officers have been trained to receive reports on sexual and gender based violence in Lagos. All convicted offenders shall face the full wrath of the Law. The government has therefore, drawn a battle against any form of domestic and sexual violence.

JOB CREATION In fulfillment of hiscampaign promise to create an Employment Trust Fund, Ambode has signed the Employment Trust Fund Bill into law. The pri-

mary objective of the fund is to address issues of unemployment and promote wealth creation through entrepreneurial development. A board of Trustees has also been nominated while the sum of N6.25billion has been set aside in the 2016 budget to jump-start the initiative. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been rejuvenated and is in the process of employing additional 1, 300 staff, and notices have been sent out to the general public in this regard. Not only that, investors have been actively engaged both locally and abroad to bring them to do business in Lagos. “We are confident that these efforts will translate to new businesses and jobs for Lagosians very soon,” the Governor said.

SPORTS Sports has not in any wise taken the back sit in the administration of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. In terms of Sports Development, there is no denying the fact that Governor Ambode is enthusiastic that Sports us a key driver of youth engagement and employment. He began on a good note by appointing former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Board Member, Mr. Deji Tinubu as the State Commissioner for Sports. Tinubu has used his wide experience in sports administration and media to great effect. Under him, Governor Ambode successfully hosted the 1st Lagos City Marathon with Access Bank as Major Sponsor. And just last week, the Governor received some Board Members of FC Barcelona. They had come to inform him that the top Spanish Club has decided to open an FC Barcelona Academy in Lagos, the first in the African continent. Again, Governor Ambode exhibited love for sports with the appointment of a veteran sports practitioner, Mr. Ayo Agbesanwa, as the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission. INTRODUCTION OF MOBILE COURTS In a bid to curb reckless and flagrant disregard of traffic and environmental laws, the Ambode administration also instituted mobile courts for speedy trial of offenders. These courts are

manned by seasoned and highly qualified magistrates of the state’s judiciary. It is also meant to broaden the pathway through which citizens can get quick access to justice, and at the same time ensure the preservation of civility. The initiative has so far reduced drastically the recklessness of drivers and environmental offenders. The giant strides of the man, Ambode can never be over emphasized as he has to a great extent demystified his detractors, and those who wrongly criticized his administration

in the earliest stage. The amiable governor concludes thus: “As your Governor, I am resolute in my commitment to you; to serve and justify the trust you have reposed in me, and work tirelessly to deliver good governance for the collective good of all Lagosians. All we need is your support and cooperation. We thank you for your direct feedback to us. and willful compliance with the State Laws. There are better days ahead. Together, we are building a Lagos that we are all proud of.”

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT This is one area that Governor Ambode has taken seriously. The information dissemination machinery in Lagos has received a big boost with a thoroughbred professional, Mr. Steve Ayorinde as Commissioner of Information and Strategy. More than ever before, Lagosians are now better informed about government activities both on social and traditional media.

ow well has Governor Akinwunmi Ambode performed since his administration began nine months ago? Lagos residents accross the state give their fair and unbaised assessment of the Governor... The Ambode government is doing well. You can see Allen now; there is street light everywhere - “operation light up Lagos” is bearing fruits without any doubt. Now one can drive at night unlike before. That to me is a major achievement Micheal, Magodo Phase one

I have not seen anything excellent in Ambode’s government so far. There is no difference, everything seem to be the same way or worse than Fashola left it. Ambode has many rivers to cross. Ogunle, Akowonjo

Well, all I have seen in Lagos so far is rapid development in terms of infrastructure, and Lagos state is better now. They have one Goal and one Vision so there is no much difference...the present government is doing what the past government have started. Patrick, Ojodu Berger

Governor is doing his best, if he continues at this pace. We will definitely get more votes when he comes for second term. Miss. Jessica Maureen

Actually, the present government is really trying, and the condition of Lagos State has improve tremendously in terms of transportation because he provided new BRT buses, and ensure security. In fact, I am highly impressed. Bayo Sehinde, Ojuelegba

I was born and bred in Lagos. I have seen different administrations come and go, each administration with its own style and touch of excellence. And so far, I believe Ambode has been excellent. The last regime was “mmuah”, very lovely. Agreed it was challenging for some people put generally speaking many people commended Fashola because his administration was firm. On Allen Avenue, I can see that street lights have been installed and they are powered in the night. In addition, traffic gridlock has reduced. There was a time I was driving around and I saw brand new security vehicles on patrol. This means Lagos is safer. We are looking forward to more achievements. Tosin, Lagos Island I am not really impressed with what Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode is doing because he is trying to implement many new laws and it is affecting Lagosians. Rayom, FESTAC Town

Well, Gov. Ambode is doing a fantastic job. I see a lot of continuity based on the fact that former Gov. Fashola really set the pace, and Ambode is following progressively in his footsteps. We have street lights on Allen now; a few years ago, what we had was solar-powered street lights and they were so bad. Opebi is also looking good, even Toyin Street is properly lit now, and traffic is also properly controlled. I am happy that he has not abandoned projects started by Fashola but has improved some of them and added his own touch. As far as I am concern, Ambode is doing a fantastic job. Lagos has improved to some extent since Ambode came into power. I see him as a no nonsense guy who is serious about instilling discipline. I am happy that he wants to change Lagos and make it a new Lagos. I like the fact that he is thinking differently from the last government. Shittu Olanike, Iju Ishaga

Actually from a personal experience, the Government is doing well. In my area, we now have more BRT buses; I just keep praying and hoping they could continue with the good deeds, and also establish a good maintenance culture. I have not gone all over the state, but some of my colleagues who live in other parts have talked about road that are being repaired or those under construction. I give full credit to Ambode for these initiatives. Ade, Akoka

The Truth about

President Buhari’s Foreign Trip OPINION

Story by: Benjamin Obiajulu Aduba

President Buhari arrived in madinah to commence the lesser hajj, umrah and pray for nigeria. he is pictured here leaving the prophet's mosque in medina flanked by governor of Zamfara state Abdul Aziz Yari, Governor Oshun State Arebisola,National Security adviser Maj.Gen.Babagana mangunu(rtd)Governor of Osun State Rauf Aregbesola.

Why is the president going on these trips? It should be the question not the frequency of the trips. And the answer is the nature of Mr. Muhammadu Buhari. He is a lonely and lonesome gentleman who listens to his own counsel, who trusts himself alone and who has standards that others cannot meet or he believes that others will not meet. Given these sets of beliefs, Mr. Buhari likes to do things himself. He believes that if you want something to be done well; you have to do it yourself. He is not a believer in management as management calls for, and demands “delegation.” One can see evidence of this “one man show” in all aspects of PMB’s Administration.

How many smart and informed Nigerians can name up to 10 Nigerian ministers without consulting a list? Not many because most of them are invisible and have not made any policy pronouncements since inauguration/appointment.

1. The Ministry of Finance is a highly visible position in any government. During the GEJ Administration Ms. Okonjo-Iweala was everywhere. Who is her replacement? What does she do? You can hardly say. Some people have accused her of incompetence. This scribe makes no such accusations. I think that there is no

room for her as PMB wants to do everything himself. One would have seen her at the Legislature presenting and defending the government’s budget as is done by Chancellor of Exchequer in British Parliament, or the Secretary of the Treasury in USA. She was nowhere to be found when PMB was seen unloading the budget proposal to the senators. One is yet to hear her say a word about where the country will be going in 2016. Or a word about fiscal policy.

2. The most travelled person in any government is usually the Foreign Minister. He travels from one place to the other negotiating trade, political deals, peace treaties, etc. It is after the deals had been sealed that Heads of State meet to sign the agreements. But not Mr. Buhari. He will go to the countries negotiate with business round tables, oil producers, defense ministers, weapons suppliers etc., by himself. He might take the responsible ministers with him on occasions but he would be the spokesman. He does not know that by staying away from the details he would be able to bring a fresh pair of eyes on a deal. If you want something done well you must do it yourself is not always true.

President Muhamadu Buhari, and official of prophet's Muhammad Mosque and governor of Zamfara Abdulaziz Yari, during his lesser Hajj,Umrah in Madina.

T

hat the Nigerian President Buhari travels abroad frequently is beyond doubt. As of the last count PMB has made 16 abroad travels in 8 months in office which is about one travel ever fortnight. He has been to 26 countries and since membership of United Nations is 193 countries it will not be long before he completes his world discovery tours.

OPINION

3. We hear of the firing of VC’s and senior executives from the presidential spokesman, giving the impression that the firing was done by PMB. Such “dirty jobs” and announcements would come from the ministry of education and responsible ministries, but no it must be done in the office of the president as would be the replacements. I recall the statements made by Professor Aluko during his hiring as VC for Federal University of Otueke, about how he got a call from the then minister of education and was interviewed. There was no indication of GEJ’s involvement even though GEJ’s hands might have been behind it all. He was smart enough to have his minister do her work.

4. The constitution calls for weekly executive meetings which ought to be where the ministers report of the progress or otherwise of their ministries and where they get their marching orders and the approval of their decisions. A couple of months ago it was announced that Executive Council meetings will hold once every two weeks. In practical terms it means that some ministers will now be seeing their boss just twice a month. The collegial atmosphere which the constitution envisaged has been suddenly abrogated. 5. If there is a single evidence of do-it-yourselfadministration, the budget debacle is it. The minister of health had to distance himself from some of the figures in budget as reported by Newsweek magazine. Other ministers if confronted would do the same. There was no budget conference where clear instructions were given to ministers as to what needs to be done. And no review of

what was done, so that there would be one budget and one voice. 6. Etc.

What is the way forward?

The dictator GMB must give way to the democratic convert PMB. It is true that there are many corrupt Nigerians but there are also many trustworthy citizens. PMB must trust his judgment in the selection of the team he had personally chosen. And empower them! They should be seen around the country and in foreign countries negotiating and cutting deals not just be seen embarking from a jet plane in PH as we saw Mr. Amaechi doing once. We want to hear from Mr. Fashola on how many national low cost houses he would build and the criteria and distribution of the units. Nigerians would like to hear from the minister of Agriculture on how Nigeria will once more be the place to go for palm products and cocoa products. Do we want to see any chocolate factories soon? Any palm oil marketing Board soon? What is the plan for coal? What is the estimated time for a train to travel from PH to Enugu/Makurdi? Any word on the drainage of River Niger up to Onitsha/Makurdi?

Nigeria, a country of 140 million, is a large country and with is multi ethnic, multi religious units and with its different levels of development, etc.; it is too complex for any one person no matter how talented. The trick in running such an enterprise is building a team of committed individuals, empowering them and setting them loose. If anyone wonders away from the set goals, the Commander In Chief would pull him/her back.

HAVEN OF GENUISES OR HUSTLERS Story by: Tersoo Achinekwu

egend has it that a place exists where madness is the motto and civility is a mere dictionary word. A place where the weak are preyed upon by the local bigwigs and chaos is the order of the day. A place where your generating set will be stolen and you’ll still have electricity. A place where you will buy an iPhone and it will show two hands shaking (Nokia’s trademark) when you turn it on. A place where some people arrive with the hope of buying a phone

herd of rowdy humans. Steeling myself, I decided it would be very stupid for me to have endured a journey from the office and putting up with a Keke Marwa driver that thought my last name was Buhari (as he kept on complaining to me about the rising Naira), only to chicken out at the entrance of Computer Village. A few steps later and I met the first wave of madness that the hub is known for. Popularly known as the Streetz, these set of guys have one mission, to

which in normal human body language system means no, I don’t want anything. But this is Computer Village and shaking your head simply means, IS THAT THE BEST YOU CAN DO? Half expecting the guy to have walked away, he changed tactics as he noticed my camera. “You wan fix am? I get lens if you want, just come my shop, we go hook you up” Once again I shook my head. Then he decided to go full retard and grabbed my hand.

and end up going home with a piece of fufu. Nope, this isn’t Iraq or Mogadishu, we’re talking about Lagos’ most popular commercial hub situated in the heart of Ikeja simply known as Computer Village. Like most times, legends tend to be a bit exaggerated and off the mark so I decided why not? A little expedition wouldn’t kill anyone, I hoped. It has to be said that a journey into Computer Village can only be taken by the bold and patient only. Anti-social nerds would have multiple heart-attacks at the entrance of the great commercial hub as one is welcomed by a

find out if the new comer needs help. I know you might be like, oh, that’s sweet, and trust me, I did too at first but 10 seconds later, I began to rue my earlier convictions. The job of the Streetz is to tail you until you decide to patronize him (or physically attack him as I’d eventually learn) and believe me, these guys know their jobs, a little too much to be frank. “Boss, boss, wetin you wan buy? I get Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, just come my shop, make we hook you up” I was only there to take a look around as such, I replied with a simple shake of the head

“Why you dey do like novice? Just show for my place, anything you dey find, I get am. Trust me I go hook you up” At that moment, I came to the conclusion that If I continued to shake my head, it would eventually fall off and he’d have to hook it up somewhere as a trophy. So I finally decided to speak and I yelled, no. A bit louder than I should have but all the same, perfect because I’d had it with the pestering. Apparently I wasn’t going to be of any help to him, so he hissed and sauntered off, leaving me seething. I was half expecting someone to grab

me by the shoulders and snatch my camera away (as the legends say), but I found myself alone in the midst of so many humans trudging their way through the streets of Computer Village, too busy to notice a mere journalist. I decided that I needed a tour guide since I wasn’t familiar with the place and headed back to the entrance to look for Captain Hook Me Up. I found him eyeing another victim and quickly stepped in before he managed to frustrate another individual. As expected, he wasn’t full of glee to see me and even after asking him to take me around, he decided it was time for his revenge and asked for an unreasonable amount of cash. I explained that I needed a tour guide, not a secretary but unfortunately, he didn’t get the joke and I was forced to part with money I could have spent on something more useful. It is because of this that I will refrain from using his real name and will instead, call him Captain Hook until the end of this feature. Who says journalism doesn’t have its perks? Computer Village used to be a residential area until late 1999 or early 2000 when Internet technology became a household name in corporate Nigeria. Knowing that a major industry was about to spring forth, savvy businessmen took position in the most vantage location of Ikeja – Otigba Street to commence trading in IT equipment and devices and by 2003 a year after GSM services were introduced to Nigeria, computer village had become a household name among telecommunication users, especially small businesses and end users. Arguably, the largest IT market in West Africa, the scenery is mainly comprised of rowdiness and as me and Captain Hook maneuvered through the crowd, I spotted a bunch of men clustered in a corner of the street and took immediate interest. Captain Hook explained that these were the handy men of the market who can fix basically anything that rings. The men, all seated behind tables, called out to passersby to patronize them and I decided to ask for a shot. Half expecting a shout fest, I was shocked by how eager they were to have their pictures taken. Kolawole, a member of the troupe and a graduate of Computer Science of Lagos State University, explained that he was forced to work in Computer Village after months of unemployment. His customer, a beautiful looking woman was too eager to tell me that the Windows Phone she was repairing had been rejected by Microsoft and written off as dud. After a few minutes with Kolawole, the old device sprung to life and I began to question the coincidence of the day. Captain Hook must have noticed my look as he continued to speak. “The Government do not want to give us jobs so we have to learn to fend for ourselves. Most of the people here are jobless and Computer Village is our only hope for survival. We cannot steal and we cannot kill so we use what God has given us, our hands” The words did hit me deeply and I pondered over this while the lot admired their pictures. As we walked away from the tables my faith in the Nigerian mass was restored as I realized that not everyone who is jobless is indeed, a miscreant. Captain Hook continued to explain

as we walked deeper into the market. “There are bad eggs here just like you will find in any place on earth. There are those who have mas

tered the art of con and can rob you without raising an inch of suspicion. This doesn’t mean that we are all thieves. We do what we can to survive as long as nobody gets hurt in the process.” He took me to the local police station in the market. Station is too big a word as the

guard point is merely situated in a container sprayed with the colors of the Nigerian Police Force. Perhaps a curse, the Nigerian Police is officially scared of journalists (for some reason). After introducing myself, I was immediately treated as a threat and every question I asked was deemed a trap (Even when I asked for the name of the officer in charge, he replied by asking if I wanted to publish his name on a billboard). After a few moments of persuasion, I managed to convince them that I wasn’t going to tarnish anybody’s name. Pleading anonymity, the officer explained that the Computer Village of old was gone and serenity was the watchword of the day. He explained that although there were still pockets of unruly petty thieves scouting the area, Computer Village was still a place of peace where businesses are run without the fear of criminal activities. The sun was getting to me already and I decided to make one more stop before I returned to the shade of my office. Captain Hook took me directly to the main part of the community that gave rise to the name, Computer Village. Mainly made up of Igbo traders, this section of the commercial hub, serves only the needs of computer owners. And as the Igboman’s history goes, I was expecting a glimpse of genii and I wasn’t disappointed. Captain Hook explained to me that most of the men fiddling with computers there were uneducated and had no certificate to their names. This, however, doesn’t stop the numerous owners of computers to troop to the place to have their devices serviced without fault. Upon entering the plaza, I was immediately rushed by a barrage of men who wanted to know what I wanted to fix. After shooing them away, I went into a random stall to ask questions and I met Mr. Cornelius. According to him, he’d come to Lagos looking for greener pastures and had to learn to fix computers in order to survive. He further revealed that he’d finally been able to start his own business after working under a master for a few years. Cornelius ended by praising his ‘master’ and uncle who taught him the handiwork that now feeds him. Captain Hook further revealed that there is a cycle that is known to this part of the Village. A man comes to learn work under a boss for a few years. He finally becomes independent and starts his own business. Then he takes in another person who will then serve under him for another few years. And so on and forth. I was more than eager to leave the sun and as I gave Captain Hook our agreed commission, I felt a pang of emptiness. I’d totally seen the notorious Computer Village from another point of view entirely and the eye opener of the day totally changed things entirely. Suddenly, I wanted to learn more about Captain Hook’s world and to understand the day to day travails of a people, forced to fend for themselves by using any means possible without resorting to violence. Another Streetz boy brought me back to reality as he inquired what I wanted to buy. I shook my head slowly and chided myself internally for the mistake as the rascal moved to stage two. “I get lens if you want, just come my shop, we go hook you up”

NOLLY WOOD POSTER BOY RMD GETS HIS GROOVE BACK Story by: Tolulope Balogun

When Richard Mofe-Damijo, better known by his initials RMD started out in the Nigerian movie industry which is now referred to as Nollywood, even he wouldn't have envisaged that he would become such a megastar and a huge success, The dashing actor who is at home on stage as he is in front of the camera has remained a lead player in the entertainment world since his break out role in 'Checkmate' where he played the role of a playboy; Segun Kadiri, in the early 90's, although he had a previous stint in an-

other television series 'Ripples' in the 1980's. His career took a step forward when he got his first Writer/Producer credit in the movie 'Out of Bounds' and has waxed stronger from that point. The Brand Ambassador of telecoms giants, Globacom who has always had a sense of style even before he was Editor/Publisher of Mr., a breezy and glossy magazine that was Nigeria’s version of GQ, RMD is today a role model of many across the world. tracted both national and international recognition to the Ministry and by extension the state. Under his supervision, the highly successful Delta Talent Quest programme was launched and he also ensured that on many state function many stars from the state were patronized-a case of looking inwards. He also sealed an international partnership to build the Delta Leisure Resorts amongst many other notable achievements. After leaving that position, which he held tightly to under the two tenures of Uduaghan’s administration in May, 2015, a lot of uncertainty had developed over what his next move will be, despite being the Founder of a Public Relations firm; White Water. Those who were wondering what his next move would be needed not have bothered, because RMD certainly knows his onions so well. From all indications, he has effortlessly picked up from where he left off eight years ago. His recent engagements include the launch of “A Very Good Bad Guy”, a book on Innocent '2baba' Idibia, written by BlackHouse Media Founder and PR expert; Adekunle Ayeni. There, he disclosed that he wasn't going into oblivion, as he was working on his television show, but didn't want to disclose the title or when the show will air. RMD also teamed up with top stars: Zack Orji and Victor Olaotan in a rib-cracking Comedy “Three Wisemen” Produced by Opa Williams. He plays the role of Irikefe, a yuppy, happy-lucky old guy. The film explores the follies these three aged men as they relive their lost youth. ears and sorrow filled the air as family, friends and colleagues of affable banker, Dan Oghenero Orogun, Managing Director, GTBank Liberia gathered to honour him as he was laid to rest in Lagos. His tragic death of January 24th 2015 was still very fresh in peoples memries as the weeped and sobbed each time his name was mentioned or his picture is flashed. It was a very sombre Service of Songs that kicked off his burial proceedings and the venue, the classy Oriental Hotel was a sea of black! The net day at The Dome, This Present House, Lekki Phase One, it was time for his funeral service. Again, it was such an emotional moment as his wife, Isioma and children struggled to keep a straight face. The pain and sense of loss was obvious- not even the words of exhortation could comfort the family. Later, after a grave side ceremony, he was laid to rest at the Vaults & Gardens, Ikoyi, Lagos.

“How He was Murdered “ NEWS

- Brother, Felix Orogun…

Why did he jump into the water seeing that Dan was swimming towards the boat and not throw the rope to Dan instead?

C

ontrary to widespread stories that Dan Orogun died when he accidentally slipped and fell into the river while celebrating his 17th wedding anniversary with wife and children, the family actually believes that he was murdered! This isstory as recounted by the family in release signed by his elder brother, Felix Orogun… George Kailondo invited Mr Dan Orogun and the family for Dinner. Daniel Orogun took his wife and children after Sunday Church service home. On getting home he received three phone calls in quick succession from George Kailondo on his invitation to him and the family. Mr Dan Orogun reluctantly told the wife of the need to honour this invitation from a major customer of the bank. You will wonder why reluctantly? Because Daniel usually does not like missing any football match involving Arsenal, who were to play that afternoon with Chelsea. He now phoned a friend to keep him informed of developments in the match. He now took a bottle of wine and some soft drinks. No food was taken along because he was Fasting as part of the Church programme of 21 days Fasting. On getting to the house of his host he parked his Vehicle. The man offered them drink, but Dan went into his Vehicle and brought a bottle of the drink he brought from home. The host now said that they should go for a boat ride and return for dinner. He took them to the Boat. They all entered not knowing that there was no life jacket. At this stage you want to know how many people were in the boat: Dan, wife, 3 children, Kailondo, and two others. A diver, named Michael was also following them on Jet Skii. Kailondo was in charge of the steering. Before They set out on the calm river Isioma, Dan's wife asked for safety procedure and life jacket, she was told that there were no life jackets but was assured that there was no problem and that experience divers were with them. It was too late for them to get out of the boat because as soon as she raised her question about life jacket Mr Kailondo quickly moved the boat from the point of anchor. While Michael the diver was displaying some acrobatics as he followed the boat with the Jet Ski. While on the calm river, they got to a point when Kailondo suggested that they should ride into the sea. But Isioma and Dan rejected the idea. They then stopped, relaxed and were chatting while Dan was responding to news on the football game going on through his phone. Music was going on in the boat. Dan was on the back seat. Mr Kailondo took a bottle of whisky emptied part of it into Dan’s cup. Dan saw it, challenged him by asking whether he has forgotten that the cup was his and did not drink from the cup anymore. Isioma ensured that Dan did not drink from the cup again. While everyone was relaxed Kailondo was watching Dan and dancing. Then very suddenly and unexpectedly Kailondo started the engine with very high speed and made an almost 360 degree turn anti-clock wise with the boat. The children and Isioma fell inside the boat as they lost balance, while Dan was thrown inside the river. Michael, the diver, that was following the boat on Jet Skii was suddenly no longer in sight. Surprisingly, the young men that were sitting on the nose of the boat did not fall into the river. It shows they were expecting such a move. Instead of Mr Kailondo to stop, he rode away for few minutes while Isioma and children were screaming for Kailondo to go and get their father. He reluctantly turn the boat to go and meet Dan, and then put-off the engine midway. In the meantime Dan was swimming towards

The

the boat. Isioma was fighting hard to prevent the children from jumping into the river because they wanted to go and rescue their father. Isioma cried and pleaded with Kailondo to go and assist her husband while the children were crying. She also pleaded with the two young men who were sitting on the nose of the boat to throw the Rescue Rope to her husband but they refused and suddenly claimed that they could not swim though Kailondo introduced them at the onset as divers. All this while Michael, the diver who was following the boat with Jet Skii was not in sight. The wife started calling for help with her phone when she saw the way things were going. Reluctantly Kailondo removed his shirt, jumped into the river, swam to meet Dan who was already swimming towards the boat, held him from the back to prevent Dan from swimming towards the boat by clipping his hands to his body and the next thing they saw was that he sank into the water with Dan, stayed under water for sometime and came out of the water from another side without Dan. After this Dan was not seen again. The divers that went on the cruise with them refuse to jump into the water to help Dan in spite of persistent plea from the wife. Isioma has to use phone to mobilize help from outside to help search for her husband. When Kailondo was challenged, he claimed that a force pulled Dan down and he saw blood and the river was boiling so he left Dan and escaped. He claimed it was witchcraft and that Dan was gone. The forgoing is the summary of the sequence of events that led to the death of our son Daniel Orogun. As you read this report some questions should come to your mind. Why did Kailondo start the engine of the boat suddenly and move at a very high speed to turn 360 degrees anti-clock wise? Why did he jump into the water seeing that Dan was swimming towards the boat and not throw the rope to Dan instead? Where was Michael the diver who was following the boat earlier with Jet Skii and doing acrobatic display? Why was it that no force in the river could pull Dan while he was swimming towards the boat until Kailondo got to him and held Dan from the back with his hands clipped to his body to prevent him from further swimming? Was Dan being drowned an accident? OROGUN FAMILY’S POSITION Kailondo did not know from the onset that Dan was a good swimmer. This fact was what complicated his plan of killing Dan and his entire family and made his intention of inviting the whole family clear. Another thing that he did not know about Dan was the fact that Dan did not drink the whisky he poured into his cup to get him drunk. His plan was to get him drunk on board before manipulating the boat in such a way unexpectedly to ensure that he fell into the river. The phone calls by Isioma to mobilize urgent external help made Kailondo to jump into the water in order to ensure that Dan got drown before any help could come. The sudden disappearance of Michael, the diver, was to enable him to be under water to act as the force under the water. Kailondo did not act alone in the MURDER of Dan Orogun. He had an accomplice in Michael, the diver that suddenly disappeared. Michael was the force that pulled Dan from under the water while Kailondo held him from the back with his two hands clipped to his body to prevent Dan from struggling and swimming. It was therefore very important that he descended into the water with Dan. He left him after he had accomplished his mission. It is of note that shortly after Kailondo came out of the water that Michael also appeared. This was not a coincidence. It was an act of divine intervention that made Kailondo not to wipe out the whole family. We are aware that George Kailondo has been sponsoring all the lies that were being fed to the Liberian Press. I must put on record

unequivocally that :1)Daniel Orogun knew how to swim ;11)Daniel did not go to Kailondo house to Celebrate any

wedding anniversary ; 111) George Kailondo was the one that invited Dan and family for Hosting. 1v) Michael, the Diver was an accomplice to Kailondo in the murder of our illustrious son, Daniel Orogun. You may want to know why Kailondo turn the boat 360 degrees anti-clock wise, if he had turn it clock wise Dan would have been flung against a pole in the rear part of the boat which would have prevented him from falling from the boat into the river. The word of God says thou shall not kill or oppress a stranger in Zechariah 7: 913. You may also want to know that in his desperation to cover up his evil, he has gone to put life jackets in the boat, though none was in the boat for rescue team to use on day of the incident. Why the attempt at cover up if he has nothing to hide? We know that Kailondo is desperate to escape justice, but he is under a DIVINE WOE AND JUDGEMENT ALREADY. And any personality that may want to help him escape from justice shall be PARTAKER OF THE DIVINE WOE AND JUDGEMENT upon him already because God shall plead the Cause of the WIDOW and The FATHERLESS. Obviously Kailondo must have been using similar methods to get rid of people. Just that this time his Alibi failed him. My candid advice to everybody in Monrovia is that AVOID ANY INVITATION by George Kailondo for a Boat Ride. This incident happened at less than half a Nautical mile from his compound on the river bank. While rescuing efforts were going on he was sleeping in his house as early as 8.30 pm on the day of the incident. What a best friend of Dan as he claimed in some of the publications he sponsored. We are grateful to the Liberian Government for all the steps they have taken since coming into the picture. The blood of Daniel is upon Kailondo, Michael and other conspirators in this terrible act of Wickedness along with their households and their generations if JESUS Tarries. They have sown to the wind, they shall reap whirlwind. I want to Appeal to the Director of National Police, Mr Clarence Chris Massquol, who is also a friend of the deceased not to allow the Marital ties between him and George Kailondo make him succumb to the pressure that this relationship will exert upon his office. These CRIMINALS AND MURDERERS ought to have been taken into custody instead of allowing them to roam the streets of Monrovia with impunity. We thank the Liberian Government and Honorable Minister of Justice for all the steps so far taken towards prosecuting this case as we look forward to Justice. Thank you gentle men of the Press.

The story of the man known simply as Ben Murray-Bruce is a story centred on breaking of norms. While many are known to have gone from grace to grass or grass to grace, the remarkable gentleman has consistently gone from grace to grace, breaking barriers, nullifying conventions, setting new standards and striving to live above board. For a man who set out to become a Professor of History and ended up studying Marketing and Business at the university, Ben Bruce had his own fair share of growing up. Having worked with his father at the popular family-owned, Domino Stores, he was endowed with the experience to finally become an acc i d e n t a l businessman. Now 60 years old, Ben was born in Lagos, Nigeria on February 18, 1956 to an Ijaw mother, Margaret Murray-Bruce from Akassa, Bayelsa State, and father whose name was Mullighan MurrayBruce. He attended Our Lady of Apostles, Yaba, Lagos, where he completed his primary education and St. Gregory’s College, Obalende, where he obtained the West African School Certificate before proceeding to the University of South

Carolina in the United States, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing in 1979. While in the University, he incidentally fell in love with show business. He found out later in life that he was born to entertain people because of the joy he derived each time he did a show. Interestingly, his parents were not really happy with his romance with entertainment. His penchant for dancing and showbiz did not sit well with them. It was by accident that his adventure with showbiz began. Severally, his dad threatened to break his two legs if he ever caught him dancing. It went on like that until his father decided to tolerate his show business, as he didn’t ever believe he would go anywhere with it. Today, his entire family enjoys the attention and as a result of his resilience, the Murray-Bruce name has become famous.

How did the adventure begin? According to him, he was at home one day in Los Angeles, USA while he was still a student when somebody walked through the door. While they were discussing, he found out that the man was a teacher to so many great celebrities like Janet

So he befriended the man, and that proved the opening he was looking for. He had the chance of meeting his new friend’s students and got contacts that later helped him bring pure entertainment from the highest places on earth to Africa. It was through these contacts that he got into the celebrity circuits, got to know the workings of the industry and before long, he was promoting shows. Without doubt, Ben Murray- Bruce is one of the biggest entertainment entrepreneurs in Nigeria and West Africa with various investments. In fact, he says that “his business is all about entertainment”.Ben whose first major public appointment was as Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority from 1999 to 2003 has been in the private sector virtually all his life. Prior to starting Silverbird Group, he promoted the Miss Universe Nigeria Pageant in 1983, Miss Intercontinental Pageant; 1986-1994 and to date, he promotes the annual Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Pageant which he began in 1986. He is currently a Member of the Board of National Arts Theatre, Nigerian Film Corporation, Federal Films Censors Board, National Film Distribution Company and Nigerian Anti- Piracy Action Committee, and above all, he is presently the Senator representing Bayelsa East Senatorial district, under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In one of his interviews, the Senator nor fondly called “Mr Common Sense” confessed that he got into show business "by accident" because it was never part of his childhood dreams and fantasy. His passion for show business afterwards made him and his wife to establish the now defunct Silverbird Magazine in 1980

It won’t be out of place to establish that the first Miss World of African and Nigerian decent was realized from his Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria platform in the person of Agbani Darego.

Senator Ben Murray- Bruce is the Chairman of the Silverbird group, which has TV stations across Nigeria known as the Silverbird Television. There is also Rhythm FM, radio station located in various major cities and The group also has a branch of Silverbird Television in Los Angeles known as the ‘MAGIC MORNING’.Of course, there is the Silverbird Cinemas that have presence in Nigeria and Ghana. Not one to be put down by just one failed attempt, on October 27, 2014, he declared his intention to represent Bayelsa East Senatorial District at the National Assembly under the umbrella of the PDP and this time he won! No one will completely tell the story of Nigeria’s entertainment industry without devoting many chapters to Ben Murray- Bruce. He is known to have single-handedly revolutionized the cinema business. Today, Ben Murray-Bruce is taking up a far higher assignment not as a Senator but pioneering an innovative #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira campaign that is aimed at encouraging Nigerians to consume local products and services in order to reduce importation and the need for foreign exchange. That is not all, he is leading example by changing his wardrobe and cars in line with his new campaign. In addition, unlike many other public officers, Ben Murray-Bruce has been speaking vociferously against wastages by politicians and public officials-and this has endeared him to many. After an elaborate 60th birthday party, there is no sign that he is slowing down one bit, he is still his bubbly, vivacious self. This is an indication that the Senator from Bayelsa is not your run-of-the mill-guy, rather, he is a real mega Don, a Boss, who keeps re-inventing himself.
