Don’t Be a Litter Bug!

BY YESENIA VÉLEZ, LCAM COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MANAGER

P

lease do not dispose of trash on the roadways, as they will end up in our ponds and lakes. We do want to take the time to thank and recognize Donna Anelli from Sunset Isles for her good deed in picking up more than 25 pounds of trash in our community lake! Like many of you, she cares about the conditions and habitat in our lakes.

Barcodes

One of the least desirable activities that are performed on a monthly basis is the removal of trash from ponds and lakes that we service. You would not believe the stuff they pull out of ponds! The usual suspects are plastic bottles, cans, children’s toys, soggy newspapers, plastic grocery bags, paper cups, and hundreds of pieces of Styrofoam. We have also had the pleasure of removing tires, Christmas trees, signs, miscellaneous auto parts, shoes and clothing, dirty diapers, and lots of other disgusting items that won’t be mentioned. All of these items ended up in the water due to waste not being properly disposed.

ID’s are required for usage of the facilities. Please make sure that you carry them when utilizing the amenities at all times.

It has occurred to me that there is a distinct possibility that maybe there are people who don’t know that storm sewers do not flow to the landfill or some mysterious “trash collection apparatus.” Maybe people just don’t realize that the storm sewers discharge directly into our local ponds and lakes. So, perhaps education is the key. Maybe if we all share these common-sense reminders with the members of our communities, it might help to keep some of the trash out of our ponds and waterways. Be aware that the storm sewers in our neighborhoods flow directly into ponds and Lake Toho. Endangered species, gators, fish, turtles, and frogs do not appreciate our trash in their homes. It’s helpful to bag all garbage when it’s put out by the street for curbside pick-up, and enclose the garbage container with a lid as stipulated in the governing documents. It doesn’t take a very strong gust of wind to topple a can and send the garbage blowing. Trust me – cans and lids are among the items that are frequently removed from ponds. 2

BELLALAGO BEACON | MARCH/APRIL 2019

Due to the rise in cost of the barcodes, the price will increase to $10 and $15 for the hand held portable barcodes (approval required). Portable barcodes are only available under special circumstances and a form is to be completed and approved by management.

Reminder ID Checks

Guest Passes Good news, guest pass prices are going down! Gone are the days of paying a whopping $50 for a guest pass! Guest passes will now be $10, which means you will only be paying $1 per visitor. We know a lot of residents love bringing visitors with them to show off our amazing amenities here, but it can be a bit costly if you want to bring the whole family to the pool for the weekend. Staff will be punching guest passes for ALL visitors, so make sure you always remember them. If you forget a guest pass, you can purchase one when you arrive. With these new lowered prices, we will begin punching guest passes for gym usage. We want to make sure residents are given a priority when using the amenities so we are hoping this updated policy will help allow room for more residents during peak gym hours, without breaking the bank! These changes will be going into effect on April 1, 2019 at which point the new guest passes will be available for pick-up.

Love Run Recap BY GISELLE RODRIGUEZ, FITNESS & WELLNESS DIRECTOR PHOTOS BY ABEL PADILLA

hat a beautiful way to start the year with our Bellalago “2019 Love Run!” Our community came together to spread the love to the Beyond Type 1 organization, raising an outstanding $3,185! We had 95 registrations and 77 race day runners. Runners, ranging from ages 6-69, met at the Bellalago start line with their game faces on that cool Saturday morning on January 19th. Instructor Katherine started us off with an upbeat warm up leading into our national anthem lead by OCSA Alumni Jeanelly Aviles. With just a few minutes to spare, everyone took their mark and prepared to take off at the sound of the horn. The countdown began and, “3-2-1 GO!” was heard. Off they went tackling Bellalago Drive, turning on Navigator Way, and looping back around to Bellalago Drive and back around to the finish line. Water stations were placed around the course for those needing to quench their thirst during the race. This 5K course was certified and relatively flat with very small inclines. The faces of excitement, but at the same time winded, started to come in at just under 20 minutes. The Bellalago Team and volunteers cheered them on as all 77 racers finished receiving 6

individually their medals of completion. We anxiously gathered around waiting for the final announcements of the top 3 overall male and female along with 1st Place male and female by age groups. An outstanding 22 trophies were issued to winning participants. A group picture wrapped up our event!

All event day photos can be viewed on BellalagoHOA.com or the Bellalago Facebook page at this time. Landscape Curbing BY KEEGAN MATHUR, LCAM, ARC COORDINATOR

W

e’re getting closer to the time for those big Florida storms that come with the spring and summer heat! With all of that rain comes two of our biggest landscaping violations, weeds popping up in the plant beds and all of the mulch washing out. This generally happens due to these big storms. Landscape curbing is not only one of the best ways to prevent having your mulch wash out, but it can also provide a nice boost to your curb appeal. When you’re on a walk through the community I’m sure you’ll notice there is a huge variety of curbing to choose from! Before you install, please make sure to send in detailed pictures of your selection with the ARC application. As soon as you receive that approval letter you are good to go! We have also made sure that completing the ARC application is as easy as possible! To fill it out, all you need to do is head over to BellalagoHOA.com and you’ll be able to find a fully-online application. It can be completed right from your phone! You’ll need to take a picture and/or attach a copy of any supporting documentation of your improvement, type in a brief description, and sign with your finger! If you have any questions, as always, you are welcome to reach out to me at the contact information below or head over to either Amenity Center.

Spring is here and it is the perfect time to start working on your yard and spruce up the landscaping around your home. Beautiful landscaping can go a long way towards your home’s curb appeal and value. Spring is also a great time to check your A/C units, change filters and perform general maintenance to ensure that your AC unit is working optimally during the upcoming summer months. This is also the perfect time for spring cleaning including, power washing of homes, fences, sidewalks and windows. One of the main violations during the growing season is landscape violations. Lawns should be neatly cut and edged. Some properties in Bellalago have Saint Augustine grass and some have Zoysia grass. Both of these lawns have different levels of maintenance requirements. On March 16th from 9am-11am at the Bellalago Amenity Center, we’ll be having a Landscaping Summit presented by Floralawn with tons of landscaping information. This will be a great opportunity to ask questions and get informed on how to keep your yard well maintained.
