Hurricane Season

hurricane resilient and climate-ready,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo. “Throughout the hurricane season, NOAA experts will work around-the-clock to provide early and accurate forecasts and warnings that communities in the path of storms can depend on to stay informed.”
he 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is underway with a slightly increased number of storms, which means we can expect a busy season ahead.
Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, are predicting above-average hurricane activity this year, which would make it the seventh consecutive aboveaverage hurricane season. NOAA’s outlook for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which extends from June 1st to November 30th, predicts a 65% chance of an above-normal season, a 25% chance of a near-normal season and a 10% chance of a below-normal season.
The increased activity anticipated this hurricane season is attributed to several climate factors, including the ongoing La Niña that is likely to persist throughout the hurricane season, warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds and an enhanced west African monsoon.
For the 2022 hurricane season, NOAA is forecasting a likely range of 14 to 21 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence.
An enhanced west African monsoon supports stronger African Easterly Waves, which seed many of the strongest and longestlived hurricanes during most seasons. The way in which climate change impacts the strength and frequency of tropical cyclones is a continuous area of study for NOAA scientists. Hurricanes don’t only affect people living along the coast. out the National Weather Service’s Hurricane Center external icon. If you hear that there is a hurricane watch or warning in your area, you can take steps to get ready.
MAKE A PLAN Hurricane season starts June 1st in the Atlantic and the Caribbean. It ends on November 30th. Before hurricane season each year, make sure you and your family are prepared by planning ahead. »

MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS READY BEFORE THE STORM HITS » » » »
Write down emergency phone numbers and keep them on the refrigerator or near every phone in your house. Program them into your cell phone too. Prepare an emergency supply kit. Locate the nearest shelter and different routes you can take to get there from your home. If shelter locations in your area have not been identified. Pet owners: Pre-identify shelters, a pet-friendly hotel, or an out-of-town friend or relative where you can take your pets in an evacuation. Local animal shelters may be able to offer advice on what to do with your pets if you are asked to evacuate your home.

GATHER EMERGENCY SUPPLIES »
During and after a hurricane, you may need supplies to keep your family safe and healthy. Remember that a hurricane could cut off your power and water supply. You also may not be able to drive because of damage to your car. Roads may be flooded or blocked. That’s why it’s best to be prepared—stock up on everything you might need now.

An emergency food and water supply. An emergency medicine supply. Emergency power sources such as flashlights (don’t forget extra batteries). Safety and personal items. Important documents, including medical documents, wills, passports, and personal identification. A fire extinguisher. Make sure your family knows where to find it and how to use it! Read the National Fire Protection Association’s tips for using fire extinguishers external icon. Know the difference between a hurricane “watch” and “warning.” Listen for National Weather Service alerts on TV or radio or check for them online. There are two kinds of alerts: • A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 miles per hour [mph] or higher) are possible in a stated area. Experts announce hurricane watches 48 hours before they expect tropicalstorm-force winds (sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph) to start. • A hurricane warning is more serious. It means hurricane-force winds are expected in a stated area. Experts issue these warnings 36 hours before tropicalstorm-force winds are expected in the area to give people enough time to prepare for the storm.

Clear your yard. Make sure there’s nothing that could blow around during the storm and damage your home. Move bikes, lawn furniture, grills, propane tanks, and building material inside or under shelter. Cover up windows and doors. Use storm shutters or nail pieces of plywood to the outside window frames to protect your windows. This can help keep you safe from pieces of shattered glass. Be ready to turn off your power. If you see flooding, downed power lines, or you have to leave your home, switch your power off. Fill clean water containers with drinking water. You’ll want to do this in case you lose your water supply during the storm. You can also fill up your sinks and bathtubs with water for washing. Check your carbon monoxide (CO) detector’s battery to prevent CO poisoning.
BE READY TO EVACUATE OR STAY AT HOME Always listen to authorities regarding whether you should evacuate or stay at home. If a hurricane is coming, you may hear an order from authorities to evacuate (leave your home). Never ignore an order to evacuate. Even sturdy, well-built houses may not hold up against a hurricane. Staying home to protect your property is not worth risking your health and safety. You may hear an order to stay at home. If driving conditions are dangerous, staying at home might be safer than leaving.
IF YOU NEED TO STAY HOME » » »

Fill your car’s gas tank. Move cars and trucks into your garage or under cover. Always keep an emergency kit in your car. Visit ready.gov for information on how to prepare your car and what to include in your kit. If you don’t own a car, consider making plans with friends or family or call authorities to get a ride if you need to evacuate. Get your family and pets ready. Go over your emergency plan with your family. Keep checking for updates about the storm. Watch TV, listen to the radio, or check online. Call the hospital, public health department, or the police about special needs. If you or a loved one is older or disabled and won’t be able to leave quickly, get advice on what to do. Put pets and farm animals in a safe place.

Keep your emergency supply kit in a place you can easily access. Listen to the radio or TV for updates on the hurricane. Stay inside. Even if it looks calm, don’t go outside. Wait until you hear or see an official message that the hurricane is over. Sometimes, weather gets calm in the middle of a storm but then quickly gets bad again. JULY / AUG UST 2 0 2 2

Stay away from windows—you could get hurt by pieces of broken glass or flying debris during a storm. Stay in a room with no windows, or go inside a closet. Be ready to leave. If emergency authorities order you to leave or if your home is damaged, you may need to go to a shelter or a neighbor’s house.

I graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. We are so excited to see how you are all enjoying these facilities and being able to meet our deadline even before summer started … that was awesome. Please remember to always have precautions when you are enjoying the pool with your family.

Another project that we are actively working on is on the painting of the street lines throughout the Main Boulevard with the cooperation of our Security Officers, who are offering safety support to our Maintenance Technicians as they work their way through the Boulevard. We are in the process of planning our next project, which consists of painting and restoring the metal fencing.

Summer Lawn & Landscape Care Written by J O S E C H A PA R RO, LCA M , C M CA , C O M M U NI T Y STA NDA RD S M A NAGE R

ummer brings outdoor barbecues and backyard play for children of all ages. As many people spend more time outdoors during the summer months than any other time, follow these tips for a healthy, entertainment-worthy yard. » Water, correctly. Many people think the summer months means water frequently, but the way you water is more important than the frequency with which you water. Grass and plants are resilient and have mechanisms that help them deal with summer heat. For instance, grass may go dormant and look brown during times of drought; however, if it is well cared for, it may return to normal when there is adequate moisture. Efficient tip for watering deeply. » Water your plants less often, but deeply. » Water in the early morning or evening hours so the sun and heat don’t steal moisture from your plants. Ideally, grass should get at least one inch of water per week. » Ensure the health of your grass. » Have your lawn aerated to improve oxygen flow and check the soil PH balance to ensure the healthiest grass. » It’s important that your grass has adequate fertilizer, which provides the nutrients necessary for good health. » Remove weeds from grass as they steal nutrients. » Mow correctly. Many homeowners are tempted to mow their grass short to minimize the frequency of mowing; however, proper mowing techniques will help promote the good health of your lawn. B EL L A L AG O B E AC ON
Note: you can help your yard win the battle with drought by choosing the right plants to begin with. Plants that are native to your region will be best adapted to your weather conditions and will need less water. Even if you choose natives, be sure those natives are listed as drought tolerant since even some natives prefer wetter conditions. You can also choose drought-resistant or low water plants and turf varieties. Ask your landscape professional for advice when selecting new plants. As a reminder, any changes to the exterior of your properties (including landscape) requires ARC approvals. For any questions regarding Architectural Review Process, or application, you can contact Oscar Gonzalez at OGonzalez@Evergreen-LM.com.
VIOLATION UPDATES: From January 1, 2022 till June 3, 2022 there has been a total of 3,357 notifications that have gone out to homeowners regarding violations. These include friendly reminders, first notice of violations, Board meeting notices, Hearing Notices, notice of fine due and others. For any compliance information or complaints, you can contact the Bellalago Compliance Team at BellalagoCompliance@Evergreen-LM.com.

Keeping Lake Bellalago Healthy Written by ST E V E N MO RI N, RE SI D E NT, BE L L A L AGO FI SHI NG C LU B

alkaline, phosphorus, nitrogen, and chlorophyll. This information is analyzed over time and is compared to other waterways in Florida. This analysis could help alert us to any potential water quality issues and the steps needed to ensure that Lake Bellalago will continue to enhance our community.
ven before I show up at my doctor’s office each year for an annual physical exam, I already know what the doctor is going to tell me. He is going to say that I need to lose weight, that I need to lower my cholesterol, that my blood pressure is too high and that I need to submit a small sample of my blood for testing. Our physicians know that testing a blood sample can provide very valuable information about our overall health and well-being.
Conducting these tests on water quality is an important step in keeping our waterways healthy, but we can also do our part just by following a few simple steps. First, do not litter. Litter is incredibly harmful to wildlife, the environment and is just plain ugly to look at. Also, take care when applying pesticides, fertilizer, and herbicide, especially near the shore of lakes and ponds. Leave lawn maintenance along crucial shorelines to the professionals.
Just as a blood sample can provide a doctor with very valuable information about our health, a sample of water taken from lakes, rivers and estuaries will do the same. In 1986, the university of Florida established Florida lakewatch, a program to keep track of the health of our lakes and waterways by collecting and analyzing water samples. Florida lakewatch is the largest program of its kind in the nation and is supported by 1,800 trained volunteers and the university of Florida’s institute of food and agricultural sciences.
Do not remove plants, cut, or destroy plants and vegetation growing along the lake shore. These plants play a very important part in controlling erosion and preventing silt build up. Finally, be sure that you dispose of hazardous chemicals properly. Gasoline, cleaning solutions and other chemicals that are dumped in driveways or the street will make their way into the storm drain system and will end up in our lakes and ponds.
Recently, members of the Bellalago fishing club began a partnership with the evergreen property management to submit and analyze water samples to Florida lakewatch. The goal is to monitor the water quality in lake Bellalago and ensure that it continues to be a valuable part of our lifestyle, enhances our property values and we can enjoy this unique recreation opportunity for many years to come.
We can all be a part of ensuring that lake Bellalago supports a healthy ecology, and our residents can enjoy this resource for many years to come. For more information on the Bellalago fishing club and our role as stewards of Bellalago lakes and ponds, contact morinsteven@ rocketmail.com or drwservices@gmail.com.
Members of the Bellalago fishing club were recently trained on how to properly collect, handle, and submit water samples from our lake for testing. Those samples are tested for clarity and levels of
