It’s Gator Mating Season Written by Y E S E N I A V É LE Z, LCA M , C O M M U NI T Y ASSO C I ATI O N M A NAGE R

N

Diseases and Parasites: Very little information is available in the scientific literature on wild alligator diseases and parasites. They are not believed to be a significant problem for wild alligators.

early all alligators become sexually mature by the time they reach approximately 7 feet in length although females can reach maturity at 6 feet. A female may require 10-15 years and a male 8-12 years to reach these lengths. Courtship begins in early April, and mating occurs in May or June. Females build a mound nest of soil, vegetation, or debris and deposit an average of 32 to 46 eggs in late June or early July. Incubation requires approximately 63-68 days, and hatching occurs from mid-August through early September.

DISTRIBUTION Alligators occur from southeast Oklahoma and east Texas on the western side of their range to North Carolina and Florida in the east. They prefer fresh water lakes and slow-moving rivers and their associated wetlands, but they also can be found in brackish water habitats.

SURVIVAL

STATEWIDE NUISANCE ALLIGATOR PROGRAM

About 1/3 of alligator nests are destroyed by predators (mainly raccoons) or flooding. The average clutch size of an alligator nest is 38. For nests that survive predators and flooding, an estimated 24 live hatchlings will emerge. Only 10 alligator hatchlings will live to one year. Of these yearlings, 8 will become subadults (reach 4 feet in length). The number of subadults that reach maturity (6 feet in length) is approximately 5. These estimates are for a growing alligator population. As a population matures (and has a higher percentage of large alligators), the survival rate would be expected to be lower, in part due to a higher rate of cannibalism.

The FWC places the highest priority on public safety and administers a Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP). The goal of SNAP is to proactively address alligator threats in developed areas, while conserving alligators in areas where they naturally occur. People concerned about an alligator should call our toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). Generally, an alligator is deemed a nuisance if it is at least 4 feet in length and the caller believes it poses a threat to people, pets or property. There are situations when smaller alligators wind up in places that are not acceptable, such as swimming pools, garages, etc., and must be removed. When someone concerned about an alligator in any of these situations calls the Nuisance Alligator Hotline, we will dispatch one of our contracted nuisance alligator trappers to resolve the situation.

MORTALITY Eggs: Alligator eggs are susceptible to drowning, being crushed by the female, predation, and other less common calamities. Raccoons are the primary predator, although hogs, otters, and bears have been reported to depredate nests.

SNAP uses contracted nuisance alligator trappers throughout the state to remove alligators from locations where they are unwanted or unwelcome. If a complaint meets the qualifying criteria, SNAP will issue a permit to a contracted nuisance alligator trapper authorizing the removal of the animal.

Juveniles: Small alligators are eaten by a variety of predators including raccoons, otters, wading birds, and fish; however, larger alligators may be their most significant predator. Adults: Cannibalism, intraspecific fighting, and hunting by humans are probably the most significant mortality factors. B EL L A L AG O B E AC ON

removal of nuisance alligators does not have a significant impact on our state’s alligator population.

which the alligator is located. SNAP does not permit the removal of nuisance alligators from private or publicly managed property without first obtaining permission from the property owner or management authority.

Relocated alligators often try to return to their capture site. They can create problems for people or other alligators along the way. If an alligator successfully returns, capturing it again would be necessary and likely more difficult the second time.

WHAT IS A NUISANCE ALLIGATOR? Generally, an alligator may be considered a nuisance if it’s at least 4 feet in length and believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property. If you’re concerned about an alligator, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286), and we will dispatch a contracted nuisance alligator trapper to resolve the situation.

To avoid creating a problem at the release site, nuisance alligators would need to be relocated to remote areas where they would not encounter people. These remote areas already have healthy alligator populations, and the ones that already live there have established social structures. The introduction of a new alligator to these areas would likely cause fighting, possibly resulting in the death of a resident alligator or the introduced alligator. Create awareness of the possible presence of alligators in ponds and with signs that say, “Don’t Feed Alligators!” and “Be Alert!”

Alligators less than 4 feet in length are not large enough to be dangerous to people or pets, unless handled. You should never handle an alligator, even a small one, because alligator bites can result in serious infection and it’s illegal. If there’s an alligator under 4 feet in your swimming pool, on your porch or in a similar situation, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).

WHY DOES THE FWC NOT RELOCATE NUISANCE ALLIGATORS IN FLORIDA?

YESENIA VÉLEZ

Florida has a healthy and stable alligator population. We have about 1.3 million alligators in Florida. Alligators live in all 67 counties, and they inhabit all wild areas of Florida that can support them. The

T

his year, we are focused on many projects that will enhance the look of our Amenity Centers in both Bellalago and Isles of Bellalago for the enjoyment of our community. Allow me to share with you an update on the following projects that are taking place during these months.

In the next few weeks we will be scheduling the painting of the lines in our parking lots at both of our Amenity Centers, including the street lines as needed. There are many other projects that are on the drawing board for our beautiful community, but we want to keep a little suspense so that the surprise is BIG! Stay tuned!

As you have noticed, the pool resurfacing is in full gear and it looks GREAT! All necessary repairs are being performed and although it might feel like it is taking a long time to complete the work, our vendor Arington is making sure that the final product is one of excellence. Our boat lift will also get a make over. It will be completely painted; rubber bumpers will be replaced as needed, and at this time we started to work with the replacement of damaged boards on the docks and Pier. B EL L A L AG O B E AC ON

ith the initiation of the Violations Committee (Fining Committee), we thought it appropriate to discuss the violation process. When a violation is observed, at a specific address, a notification is sent to the homeowner. appear at this meeting does not prevent the Committee members from imposing a fine. The fine is $100 a day, for up to 10 days, which is placed on your Association account. In accordance with the governing documents, there is no formal appeal process to the imposition of a fine. You can find the “Covenant Violation Notice and Fine Policy Resolution” on BellalagoHOA.com. We are currently working on getting this Violations Committee (Fining Committee) up and running by March and we thank those who have applied. We are reviewing all applicants and the Board will be making the final determination on the approved committee members. If there are any questions regarding this process, you may contact me at JChaparro@Evergreen-LM.com.

In most cases, a “Friendly Reminder” notification is sent to bring the issue to the homeowner’s attention. If the issue is not resolved, a “First Notice of Violation” letter is sent and, if necessary, a “Second Notice of Violation” letter is sent (each notice has an allotted time frame of 14 days before escalation). The Second Notice of Violation letter puts the issue in front of the Violations Committee if not resolved in accordance with the time stated in the letter (the board will meet to impose fines prior to the meeting). During the Violations Committee meeting, homeowners are given the opportunity to discuss the non-compliance issue with the Committee members, which means the homeowner has the opportunity to dispute the charges levied by the Board. pring is a time for making choices and taking inspired action. It is about establishing commitments and leaping forth – feeling full with the drive to start new projects and draw clear boundaries.

Having taken winter to imagine all the possibilities, we are now called upon to choose a path that excites us. Spring helps us build up speed and pressure; it’s our job to direct that energy toward what will ultimately bring us to joy and fulfillment. It’s a time of independence and “pioneering” energy, a time to break away from the pack and go for the goal.

All these are items that once completed will keep our Bellalago & Isles of Bellalago community looking clean and attractive.

Spring cleaning is one good way to start directing this energy kind of like a “Out with the old in with the new” sort of vibe.
