Consider Xeriscaping Your Yard

Bellalago is supplied with reclaimed water from Toho Water Authority for irrigation. When the demand for irrigation water is high, the supply can run out and it can take several days for water to become available again. This can take a toll on landscaping if the plants are not able to withstand the period without watering. One helpful technique to combat the often-limited access to irrigation is by xeriscaping, which offers several benefits. This is a landscaping technique that focuses on using drought-resistant and native plants to create a low-water and sustainable garden or landscape.

1. WATER CONSERVATION

Florida often experiences drought conditions, making water conservation crucial. Xeriscaping employs native or drought-tolerant plants that require less water than traditional landscaping choices. This can lead to significant reductions in water consumption for irrigation, helping to conserve this valuable resource.

2. REDUCED MAINTENANCE

Xeriscaped landscapes are designed to thrive in their local climate with minimal input. Native plants are adapted to Florida’s environmental conditions, requiring less care, maintenance and irrigation. This can lead to lower maintenance costs and time commitments for homeowners and landscapers.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY:

Traditional landscaping practices often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which can contribute to water pollution. Xeriscaping promotes the use of organic materials and native plants, reducing the need for such chemicals and helping to maintain a healthier ecosystem.

4. BIODIVERSITY AND HABITAT

By incorporating native plants into your garden, you can attract native wildlife such as birds, butterflies and insects. This can contribute to creating a more biodiverse and ecologically balanced environment.

5. RESILIENCE TO CLIMATE CONDITIONS

Florida’s climate is characterized by its heat, humidity and occasional tropical storms. Xeriscaping with native plants that are adapted to these conditions can help your landscape withstand weather extremes and adapt to changing climate patterns.

6. AESTHETIC APPEAL

Xeriscaping doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty. There is a wide variety of attractive native plants that can be used in xeriscaped landscapes, providing a visually appealing and unique garden that compliments the local environment.

7. COST SAVINGS

While there might be an initial investment in selecting and planting native plants, the long-term cost savings from reduced water usage, maintenance, and the need for fertilizers and pesticides can be significant.

Overall, xeriscaping offers a holistic approach to landscaping in Florida by addressing water scarcity, environmental concerns, and the need for aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces. It’s a strategy that aligns well with our unique climate and conservation challenges.

New Name, Same Commitment

Ever since the beginning of this year, we have been going through transitions that have brought many changes than just a name. Changes that have made us stronger and more devoted to the service we provide our residents. As I was looking for ideas on what to write about in this article, a few words came to mind and at that moment I was reminded of the promise I made to this community as I became part of you… COMMITMENT.

According to Wikipedia, a promise is a commitment by someone to do or not to do something. As a noun, promise means a declaration assuring that one will or will not do something. As a verb it means to COMMIT ONESELF BY A PROMISE TO DO OR GIVE.

This is what our promise is to you. A commitment to provide excellent service that will allow us to make your visit to our Club a remarkable experience. It takes a TEAM to win a game and we are up

to the challenges that this new beginning will bring. Of course, the rules will remain the same, but the changes that you will experience will be gratifying. You might have noticed that the logo on our uniform is different but the dedication and loyalty that we have for our residents is still as valuable as it has always been. Our new management company’s name is Castle Group and I must say that this name describes Bellalago to it’s best!

Allow us to welcome you to our new kingdom where you will always find the best royal service.

Inspiring Change in Our Community and Beyond

The young generation in our community is all set to make a lasting impact, not just within our neighborhood, but possibly on a global scale also. And let me tell you, as the management representative of the Environmental Committee, I’m seriously impressed by the fantastic work this next young man is doing. It’s honestly awesome to see the difference he’s making!

Andrew Martinez, a dedicated member of Troop 800, embarked on a remarkable initiative that has left a lasting impact on Bellalago Academy, his alma mater. Presently enrolled at NeoCity Academy and poised to enter his senior year, Andrew’s accomplishments culminated in achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout on July 10, 2023.

Andrew’s visionary project centered on creating an enchanting Outdoor Butterfly Garden & Classroom at Bellalago Academy. Beyond mere aesthetics, his purpose was to foster a thriving habitat for pollinators, which bears immense significance for our community. A staggering three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants and approximately 35% of global food crops rely on animal pollinators for propagation, a fact underscored by the USDA. By designing these butterfly gardens, Andrew creatively provided these vital pollinators with the optimal nourishment they require for their survival.

In an inspired move, Andrew also integrated an outdoor classroom

into his project. This clever addition empowers students with handson learning opportunities, immersing them in the captivating life cycle of butterflies while illuminating their pivotal role as pollinators. Looking ahead, Andrew’s thoughtful plan extends to distributing butterfly kits to all six 2nd-grade classes, ensuring an immersive experience as classes reconvene.

Andrew Martinez’s devotion to both environmental enhancement and education stands as a testament to his leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to making a positive difference within his community.

A big thank you to Andrew’s mom, Theresa for sharing this excellent information with us! Your contribution is greatly appreciated, and it’s heartwarming to see parents like you supporting and celebrating the fantastic efforts of young individuals in our community. Thank you for keeping us in the loop!

8 BELLALAGO BEACON SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2023 COMMUNITY CLUBS

Compliance & Prevention

Together we can keep Bellalago looking great and a community that we can be proud of for years to come. The Compliance team is a big part of keeping our community looking beautiful. During neighborhood inspections they are tasked to send notices to homeowners about anything that needs attention. These notices are sent to the member via email and letter. When receiving these notices, please contact the Compliance Department to help get a better understanding of the situation. Extensions can be granted on specific situations depending on the circumstances. This will also help keep the notices from escalating and avoid the possibility of being fined.

The rainy season is over, so please take the time to inspect your driveway and sidewalk. The rainy season usually causes most sidewalks in Bellalago to build up black dirt and mold. This can be hazardous to walkers and a liability to homeowners. It is every homeowner’s responsibility to have your driveways and sidewalks maintained. The Compliance team will be focusing on these residential areas of concern, sending out the proper notices and maintenance is working

on cleaning up the common areas that need attention as well.

Bellalago homeowners have recently experienced the frustration of seeing debris dumped on HOA property. Please do not use wooded areas behind and around the homes in Bellalago and empty lot areas as a dumping ground. When residents choose to dump their trash on the common or conservation areas, it costs all of us. If you have TVs, debris, or large/bulk items that cannot be placed out with the regular trash pickup, please call Advance Disposal at 407-605-3892 to schedule a bulk pick-up. Please do not put bulk trash or landscaping debris out in front of the home until the afternoon before or morning of for pick up by Advance Disposal.
