MAR/APR 2023 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE 3 Ashley
Where were you born?
Catherine Gangloff
YOUR COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MANAGER
What are you most thankful for?
I am thankful for my large, close-knit family. I know that no matter what, any one of my four brothers or two sisters would drop everything to help me out if I needed them.
Who is your hero?
My mother is my hero. She has always been there for me through thick and thin. I’m privileged to have my mom live with me now and I can give back some of what she gave me. She raised me and my siblings mostly on her own and we all have carried on her legacy by being successful, contributing members of society with awesome families of our own.
What motivation do you have to work?
I’ve always loved going to work. I love learning new things and passing those lessons on to the staff here at Esplanade at Artisan Lakes. I enjoy helping Members take full advantage of all their community has to offer by keeping it well maintained and also finding new ways to make improvements.
What is your favorite thing about your career?
My favorite thing is the people! I have worked with so many incredible people throughout my career in Association Management. I have worked with 4-Star Generals, Veterans from WWII and beyond, Fortune 500 executives, all kinds of tradesmen, family caregivers and on and on. Everyone brings a special contribution to a community, whether time or talent, because they all want the same thing - to be proud of where they live. When I can help, and everyone works together towards that same goal, that’s what I love to do.
Lakewood, Ohio, but I was raised in Broadview Heights and went to Brecksville High School. Go Bees!
What are your hobbies?
I love most sports and music. Lately, I’m into listening to unsolved mystery podcasts on my drive home from work to unwind.
What are some places you have visited?
This past summer I took my mother back up to Ohio to visit one of my two sisters and one of my four brothers. From there, we took a road trip to the Buffalo, NY area to visit her family home and the area where she grew up. I hadn’t been back since I was about 10 years old when we would visit my grandpa on his small farm in Johnson’s Creek. The trip brought back many great memories for me and for my mom. We visited Niagara Falls with the newest addition to the family, baby Owen, and even got to stop at the racetrack in Erie, PA to watch my niece jockey in a few horse races.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
I am most proud of my two children. Both are young adults now just starting their careers and I must say, they are killing it. As the saying goes, train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it. I am proud that my son and my daughter have found their paths in life and are pursuing their dreams.
What do you enjoy most about Esplanade at Artisan Lakes?
I love coming to work every day to this beautiful place. The resort atmosphere and vibe can’t be matched. I love getting to know our Members of all ages, backgrounds and cultures, and our staff is top notch. We have wonderful volunteers and others in this community who do not hesitate to pitch in with an idea, a kind word, helping our Lifestyle team with events or even to maintain the property at times. That is the real definition of community and Esplanade at Artisan Lakes has built that wonderful foundation to keep this a special place for years to come.

2023 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE 7
Allen Fears & Jo Snell
The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.
Why did you choose Esplanade at Artisan Lakes?
For many years, we vacationed along the Gulf Coast and visited Jo’s family in Apollo Beach, knowing we would eventually live in the area. After visiting numerous communities over the years, we kept returning to visit here. It was a wise decision, and we are so grateful for the wonderful friendships we’ve made thus far.
How long have you lived here?
After Jo’s 50 years in Denver and Allen’s 33 years, Esplanade became our home in July of 2020.
QWhat Lifestyle programs are you most interested in? Are you in a club? Do you attend any classes/clinics? Hobbies?
AAllen joined the men’s bocce ball group and monthly dinner group. He’s very busy now meeting with committees, clubs, groups, and learning about the community to help Members prepare for taking over Esplanade in the coming years. Jo is a self-taught chef—cooking is her passion, and she spends hours every night preparing new recipes. She also enjoys gardening.
They both attend the Sit and Train exercise class as well as using the exercise equipment through Dan Furnare’s training. Jo enjoys the Garden Buds and Community Emergency Response Team clubs. Their shared interests are fine wines and travel, and they enjoy the special events and educational presentations at the Amenity Center.
Tell us about your family and current or past professions. Jo’s professional career spanned 36 years in the public sector, as an economic development specialist and a
communications director for a Colorado toll highway. She stopped working professionally in 2012 when she and Allen married, had a new home built in Denver and became a stepmom. Allen is still working as a Chief Financial Officer for two entities. Jo has extended family throughout the United States and Japan. Allen has a sophomore high school daughter in Denver.
What is the best advice you have ever received or given?
During Allen’s tenure with the Denver Broncos Football club, the head coach, Mike Shanahan said, “There can be no separation in your organization. You win as a team; you lose as a team.” Jo is the ultimate list maker, organizer, and planner. She’s prepared for just about anything and learned these skills from her career Air Force father.
Where is the most exciting place you’ve traveled to and what made it so memorable?
Jo’s Air Force dad was stationed twice in Japan, where Jo’s mom is from. Jo’s years living in Japan were very educational and great to be around her Japanese relatives. Allen has traveled to Washington, D.C. many times. He appreciates the wealth of history and knowledge from visiting the various Smithsonian museums.
Tell us something that might surprise people.
In 2012, Jo made a presentation at an international tolling conference in San Francisco. During their stay, Jo’s friends who manage the Golden Gate bridge took them on a oncein-a-lifetime VIP tour of the bridge. They rode the original elevator to the top of the bridge and walked out on the deck. It was a little scary at first, but the views were breathtaking.

Book Club
How long has this group been active and how many Members?
Book Club started with a very small group of Member readers in 2015 and has grown since then into an 88-Member club.
What’s the appeal of Book Club?
At its heart, Book Club is a place where Members interact and have fun with their neighbors, through small group conversations about the books they are reading together. We find that it is a great way to form and nurture relationships.
When does the group meet?
We meet on the fourth Monday of each month in the Resort Amenity Main Room at 6 p.m.
Other than monthly meetings, does the club offer other benefits?
In addition to curating and maintaining our own community library, housed in our Resort Amenity Center, we offer “Meet the Author” evenings from time to time, as well as programs designed to help interested Artisan Lakes Members maximize their enjoyment of the Manatee County Library. Did you know you can borrow tools, including a power washer from our County Library? Stay tuned for our next community wide program!
How does someone learn more about Book Club?
Interested Members are encouraged to join our private Facebook page to receive and interact with updated information about what everyone’s reading. For more information and to receive a link to the Facebook page, contact the club leader, Sue Barber, at barber. sue@gmail.com.
It’s ALL about being together, in person or online!

Meditative Sound Bowl Closing Ceremony & Upcoming Wellness Events
To assist in staying present and grounded, as well as taking a moment each day to share appreciation for our Members, we have implemented a ceremonial closing procedure with the use of sound meditation. Our Lifestyle Team will begin the tradition of closing with a brief note from a meditative sound bowl, signifying the end of another day.
Staying true to Esplanade’s Wellness Ecosystem, sound meditation is a part of your spiritual wellness. This tool of mindfulness meditation uses sound to focus the mind and reverberate stress away. Sound and vibration help realign the frequencies of the body, bringing us back to a state of balance, allowing our bodies to relax, soothe our souls, and heal our energy. We hope this new meditative addition will enhance your wellness and zen, anchor your mind in the present moment and allow you to let go of distractions.

It’s important to eat well in order to live well. Your body needs fuel to stay strong and healthy. Fueling your body with fresh, whole foods is one of the best choices you can make, and the process can be simple! Here are a few suggestions to make healthier decisions this season: 1) Eat more fruits and vegetables; 2) Choose whole grains over processed, white bread; 3) Swap unhealthy snacks with healthier options like nuts or dried fruits; 4) Eat a variety of protein such as poultry, fish, beans or tofu; and 5) Limit your added sugar intake to no more than 6 teaspoons a day for women and 9 teaspoons for men.

Raspberry Rhubarb Margarita
INGREDIENTS
» 2 oz tequila blanco
» 2 oz fresh lime juice
» 2 oz raspberry rhubarb syrup (recipe to the right)
» 2-3 jalapeño slices
» Fresh raspberries, limes, and jalapeño, for garnish
RASPBERRY RHUBARB SYRUP
1. Add 1/2 cup chopped rhubarb, 3/4 cup raspberries, 1 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar, and the juice of 1/2 a lemon to a small saucepot and cook over medium-high heat until the mixture comes to a low boil.
2. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the rhubarb is soft.
3. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Once cooled, mash the rhubarb and raspberries with the back of a fork or a wooden spoon.
4. Strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, extracting as much liquid as possible. Pour the liquid into a jar or sealed container and place in the refrigerator to cool.
DIRECTIONS
1. Place a thin layer of flake salt on a small plate. Rim glass with lime juice and dip each glass into the salt. Set aside.
2. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and 2-3 jalapeño slices. Add the tequila, lime juice, and raspberry rhubarb syrup to the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
3. Fill prepared glass with ice and, using a cocktail strainer, pour the mixture over the ice. Garnish with fresh limes, fresh raspberries, and jalapeño slices, if desired.
