Letter From the Lifestyle Team
ASHLEY COOPER YOUR LIFESTYLE MANAGER
Welcome Spring!
I hope you had an enjoyable Holiday Season and refreshing start to the New Year! Your Lifestyle team looks forward to all the upcoming experiences we have planned throughout March and April.
So many memories have already been made this year! Our New Year’s Eve Concert was an unforgettable event and an epic way to enter 2024 with over 400 in attendance.
If you have not attended an event, joined a club or attended a fitness class, we encourage you to explore all the opportunities available for you right here in your own community! This is a great way to meet your neighbors and create long lasting friendships. If you are interested in starting a club, please contact your Lifestyle team to apply.
We look forward to our first Signature Event of the year on Saturday, March 2 with a Mardi Gras theme! Experience an electrifying celebration filled with vibrant colors, lively music and the infectious spirit of Mardi Gras! We look forward to seeing you!

Where were you born?
I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and I was raised in Abita Springs, Louisiana. I traveled to Michigan to visit family and met my husband on a blind date. Six months later we were married, and I lived In Michigan until we moved to Ruskin, Florida permanently in 2014.
What are your hobbies?
I love boating and ceramics.
What are you most thankful for?
My family. I have an amazing husband named Jim who still makes me laugh after 46 years together! I have a son named Brandon who lives in Michigan and a daughter, Amanda who lives here in Palmetto.
Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to?
I was blessed to have a career that allowed me to travel the U.S. and Canada. I would have to say Florida was always my go to travel favorite with Hawaii being a close second. I love the ocean, sandy beaches and the wildlife in both places.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
By far, being a mom and grandma. I also worked with dementia and Parkinson’s residents and their families in the past and although it was emotionally challenging at times, it was so rewarding to have been allowed to be part of their lives.

Wendy & Michael Blackwell
The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.
Why did you choose Esplanade at Artisan Lakes?
AQWe moved here in July 2019, but we’ve had our eye on this community since 2014! We knew we would retire to Florida to be closer to family and made it a hobby of exploring new developments when we came to visit. An amenity center with a lifestyle director was a must! We also loved the “sweet spot” that Artisan Lakes is between St. Pete/Tampa and Bradenton/Sarasota. We quickly realized that not only did we win the lottery with location and amenities, but that the neighbors here are something truly special.
What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in?
We both can be gym rats. We enjoy all the offerings that are available to us and over the past 4 ½ years have indulged in various game nights, potlucks, and social events. I equate living here to being on a cruise ship. If you are bored, just check out the calendar and there is something going on.
Are you in a club or play sports? What are your hobbies?
Of course, everyone knows we have a love for Left, Right, Center! Hosting this game night has brought so much joy to us! Wendy participates in line dancing and both of us have been practicing our moves at Couples Social Dancing. Once retirement officially hits, we will be adding more to this list. Game nights with our friends are our favorite. Having been in the military, the firing range is a big one. Dancing, movies, exploring Florida, and eating out also top the list. Wendy also makes Home Goods a bit of a hobby!
Tell us about your family and current or past professions. Mike and I will be married for 35 years this May! We went on a blind date on St. Patrick’s Day, and coincidentally Wendy’s parents also had a blind date on St. Paddy’s Day! It must have been a sign. We have two sons, David (28) and Matt (26). Both entered the military; one as an Army Ranger and the other as Armor/Military Intelligence. David is still serving and is a CPT while Matt lives locally in Parrish and works for Manatee County.
After 10 military moves, Mike retired from the Army in 2007 as a LTC (Military Police) and is working on his second retirement from the Department of Veteran Affairs in IT Security in two more years! Wendy’s career fields changed as she followed Mike throughout the military focusing first on economic development for a chamber of commerce and city director level, and then transitioned to admin work for a school system. Wendy was actively involved in volunteering with the military spouses/family readiness groups and running PTO organizations. She was twice awarded the Department of the Army, Commanders Award for Public Service. She now focuses on caring for her mom.
What is the best advice you have ever received or given?
Be kind and family first. As a military family, I was very cognizant of how our sons had to transition to a new home every 2-3 years. I remember telling them not to be scared about moving to a new and strange place. I would have them look at each other and say, “Your best friend is right next to you and will be there for you.” We did our best to make each move an adventure and found that even amid some of the worst location assignments, we had the best of times because we were surrounded by fantastic people.
Where is the most exciting place you’ve traveled to and what made it so memorable?
It is difficult to narrow it to one because there are strong feelings and lessons learned attached to two places. Most recently, I would choose Italy. It was like arriving on a movie set, the history was awe inspiring, and it was something we did just for ourselves. On the flip side, we lived in the country of Panama for 3 years during the ‘90s. Living in a third-world country made us appreciate all those things we take for granted in the United States. It really puts things into perspective on what is truly important in life. We know that we are blessed on so many levels.

Furry Friends Meet Bijoux
LOVED BY KIRK & JODI BENOIT
What breed is your pet, how old is she and how long has your pet been a part of your family?
Bijoux is a two-year-old Aussiedoodle, born on July 11, 2021. She became a part of our family on September 4, 2021.
When you travel does Bijoux travel with you?
Yes, she has traveled many miles with us. Riding is one of her favorite things to do. She knows the difference between going for a ride and taking for a trip. If we say trip, she settles down in her bed and naps.
What is her favorite treat?
Bijoux loves all treats but especially the ones I make her that are frozen into treat bowls.
What are a few amazing qualities about your sweet pup?
She is incredibly sweet and loving. Bijoux exhibits a very gentle nature with other dogs and constantly wants to play. She loves the water, whether it is boating, swimming or taking showers. Additionally, she is an excellent ball catcher.
Tell us a fun story involving your pet!
Bijoux is very smart and picks up new things very easily. Recently, I wanted to teach her to “say” yes when I ask her about walks, treats, etc. I thought I was saying yes in a dog like ruff so she could copy and didn’t realize I was nodding my head as I did it. Now when I ask her about treats, she nods her head yes because she mimicked me.
