Sir Henry Phillip Gagnon, aka Hank or Hank the Tank. Our son wanted to name him Phil, so we compromised! Hank has a sister Roxie, our African grey parrot. What breed/type is Hank and how old is he? Hank is a Golden Retriever, and he is 7 years old. How long has Hank been part of your family? Hank has been a Gagnon since he was 8 weeks old. When you travel does Hank travel with you? It depends on where we travel to. He loves visiting his Granny in Palm Harbor and his “doggie cousins” in Bradenton and Parrish. If we travel by plane, however, he usually stays with his Granny. What is his favorite treat? Hank loves his nightly “Chewies.” He also loves frozen pup cups during the warm months. What are a few amazing qualities about your sweet pup? Hank is a gentle giant who loves humans, especially kids! When you visit our home, Hank will greet you with whines of excitement while he fetches one of his favorite stuffed toys to meet you at the door. He enjoys long morning walks followed by a relaxing dip in the pool. Hank is a very happy boy except during thunderstorms when he hides in the laundry room. Sir Phillip Henry Gagnon is a blessing to our family and my constant buddy.

he National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has won ground-breaking Endangered Species Act victories to protect coastal habitats throughout the Florida Keys. In 2009, NWF filed a lawsuit against FEMA for failing to protect endangered sea turtles from the impacts of its National Flood Insurance Program, which promotes development in critical sea turtle habitats. Ninety percent of all sea turtle nesting in the U.S. takes place on Florida’s beaches. Coastal development on dunes of eroding beaches can significantly impact sea turtles by interfering with nesting and hatchlings. “In addition to providing essential wildlife habitat, these coastal areas work as buffers against storm surges up and down the Florida coast,” said John Kostyack, NWF’s Vice President of Wildlife Conservation. “By allowing houses and business to be built in flood prone areas, the Federal Flood Insurance Program is subsidizing the destruction of sea turtle habitat, putting people at risk and wasting our tax dollars.” Read more by visiting nwf.org/Our-Work/Habitats/Floodplains/Florida-Floodplains

Why did you choose Palmetto, Florida and specifically, Esplanade at Artisan Lakes? Is your residency full-time? If part-time, where else do you spend your time? We were looking for a gated community with amenities between Tampa and Sarasota. We picked that area because it worked out well for Ann’s job and we liked the proximity to the airport and the beautiful gulf beaches. We ultimately picked Artisan Lakes because of the location, value, amenities and friendly people. We are full time Floridians and love it! Though during the heat of the summer, we do love to sneak away to somewhere cooler, like the mountains. How long have you lived here? We moved into an apartment in Bradenton for 8 months while they built our home, and just passed the 4 year mark living in the neighborhood. What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in? Are you in a club? Do you attend any classes/clinics? Hobbies? We enjoy our Resort Amenity and many of the events and activities. We work out in the gym regularly, enjoy Karaoke Nights and attend all the social events we can, but we love pickleball! We play about five times a week and we’re on the Artisan Lake’s league team. We have met so many wonderful people in this community, many of which we know through pickleball. We hope more of our current and future neighbors will come out and join the fun and camaraderie. We also enjoy biking, hanging out with friends, traveling, enjoying our pool or just watching new shows or doing puzzles. Tell us about your family and current or past professions. We are blessed with five amazing children, four girls and one boy. Our girls are all married and work in the health field. Our oldest, Nicole, is a Mental Health Therapist living in Pensacola. Her family includes our two granddaughters, Maisie (7) and Matilda (4). Our daughter Brooke is an Occupational Therapist in the Pinehurst area of North Carolina. Her family includes our oldest grandchild, Mason (10). Our other two daughters both live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Samantha is a Speech Pathologist and is due to have our next grandson in October, while Danielle was recently married and is a Death Investigator. Lastly, our son Hayden is a senior at Florida State University, where he is majoring in Physics. Ann retired from FedEx after 20 years where she started as a part-time driver and finished as a Senior Hub Manager. She then went to work for Walmart, where she spent 15 years, starting in logistics leadership, before transitioning to HR as a Market Manager retiring in 2019. Mike spent 31 years working for Walmart Logistic, starting as an Area Manager in a Distribution Center and moving up to running multiple Distribution Centers across the country. His last 15 years were spent as a Regional VP of Supply Chain. Mike retired in 2016.
SPOTLIGHT
Where is the most exciting place you’ve traveled to and what made it so memorable? Wow, that’s a tough one! We’re heading to Alaska in a couple weeks. We love to travel so we can enjoy new adventures and beautiful scenery. We enjoyed Maui and being able to watch the whales was amazing, but we also loved last year’s trip to Sedona and Utah, with all they have to offer. We have future plans to also cruise the South Pacific and Europe. Though those exotic places are beautiful, we really look forward to our routine visits to Jamaica and Mexico where we meet up with countless friends we’ve met traveling there each year.
The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.

Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub
National
POSITIVE THINKING DAY ACTIVITIES
T he fall season can be busy, but a little self-care sure goes a long way! This easy-to-make Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub is the perfect cure for the hustle and bustle. (Recipe by SomeWhatSimple.com.)
5. Note - Since this is an all-natural product, it won’t last forever. Plan to use it within a month or two.
4. Rinse well and then pat dry with a towel.
It smooths and pampers, and it smells like pumpkin pie – what could be better than that?! The ingredients you’ll need include: brown sugar, oil (coconut, olive or almond oil work best), spice (pumpkin pie spice, or 1 teaspoon cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg), vanilla, vitamin E oil (optional), and a jar. Add the sugar scrub ingredients to a small bowl and then mix everything together with a fork or spoon. Once mixed, transfer the sugar scrub to a small jar and seal it until you’re ready to use it.
P
HOW TO USE THE SUGAR SCRUB
1. Start the day positively by smiling and expressing a prayer of thanks. You might even want to say some affirmations. Think positive sentences about you or your circumstances.
3. Allow to sit on your skin for 3-4 minutes. Take this time to rest and relax…you deserve it!
2. Seek positivity outside of yourself on Positive Thinking Day. Read or watch positive motivational books and movies.
14 ESPLANADE LIFESTYLE SEP/OCT 2022 WELLNESS / SPA
1. Scoop a small amount into your hands with a clean spoon.
2. Scrub all over your hands or feet, or wherever you’d like a little extra softness.
Positive Thinking Day
3. Hang around with positive like-minded people and share your stories of positivity with each other. This will help you stay encouraged and motivate you to keep doing your best with memory, thinking, mood (depression, anxiety) and chronic fatigue/chronic pain.
ositive Thinking Day is celebrated on September 13 every year to highlight the rewards of positive thinking. This day is a great reminder to be purposeful about thinking positive thoughts. It’s easy to be pessimistic and cynical about things, which is not entirely bad because it can prepare you for challenging scenarios. However, too much negativity can have an adverse impact on our emotional well-being. Research says that you can prolong your life with happiness and optimism. So, on Positive Thinking Day, and other days too, train yourself to see the bright side in every situation and keep a positive attitude always.

Pot Pie Bake Off
Did you know that the pot pie originated in Greece? Greeks took cooked meat and placed them in open pastry shells that were called “artocreas.” It was the Romans who added the top crust making Chicken Pot Pie into an actual pie. In the 16th century, Britons revived the ancient custom of meat pies. Have a fabulous family recipe for pot pies sure to comfort family and friends through the fall? Bring your prepared pot pie to our Resort Amenity Center at 6 p.m. You will be judged by our panel on flavor, consistency and appearance. The First Place winner will receive a prize!
