Summer is on the Way!

Since joining the team here at Esplanade Azario at Lakewood Ranch I have been bowled over by the wonderful welcome from our Members and it was an absolute pleasure getting to know the Azario community during our beautiful Seaside Social Signature Event. I was also able to witness just how dedicated this team is in the pursuit of delivering unforgettable events, activities, and special occasions to our Members.

Our Signature Event, the Seaside Social, saw over 350 Members attend Whisky Joes in Bradenton for an afternoon of food, entertainment, dancing, and laughs. March also saw the first ever Paddy Paddles Battle of the Esplanades Pickleball Event. Members competed in a variety of brackets while being fed and watered by Chris McDonald and his brilliant team.

March ended with the Esplanade Resort Experience and Troon Debut that saw over 500 Azario Members attend a beautiful event that showcased the amazing travel experiences, retail opportunities, Wellness options open to the Azario community, and with tasting booths courtesy of the Sip Wine Club and Chef Jason.

Members were able to relax, make new friends, and learn more about harnessing the power of Esplanade and Troon.

Our Wellness team, led by the fantastic Mary Winter, ran a stunning Yoga series throughout April with sessions tailored to the needs of our community, even with a special class for our golfing Members.

April included a Scrabble Battle on the anniversary of the First American Dictionary, a Helicopter Egg Drop for Easter Sunday at the Lakewood Ranch Polo Fields, a Trivia Night, a dance class, and a mixer for current and prospective Members of the Azario community.

Over these next few months, our Members will be invited to tour a local distillery, have a mini-golf foursome battle, attend a Beatles tribute show, and learn about the history of American blues music, along with a whole lot more.

James Wood YOUR LIFESTYLE

James comes to Esplanade at Azario Lakewood Ranch from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and Desoto Counties, where he was the Director of the Gene Matthews Club in North Port, Florida.

James is originally from London, England. He graduated in 2001 from Goldsmith University of London with a BA in English and then went on to complete a MS in Psychology, which led into a career working with at-risk youth. In 2012, James and his family decided to move to the USA and they set up home by the Manatee River in Bradenton. For the next eight years James coached for Florida Youth Soccer in their Olympic Development Program and for FC Sarasota, becoming the Director of Coaching in 2018. In 2019, James and his family moved to Kansas City. He worked for Puma Futbol Club as a coach and the Director of Operations for three years before the family could no longer resist the pull of warm winters and moved back to Sarasota.

James is a keen runner and enjoys playing any sport, but mostly he tries to spend as much time with his teenage daughter as he can. They love going to horror movies, playing games, and hiking.

What Lifestyle programs are you most interested in?

Living and playing in Azario is every bit as enjoyable as many of the Ritz/Marriott resorts we travel to. We just moved in and are unpacking while looking forward to having my kids visit next month. We already have golf on the schedule! The Azario course is amazing with all the green space, underground utilities and controlled water ways that is part of the master development of Lakewood Ranch, but the added benefits of a community with all the Resort amenities is a bonus. We appreciate the models for growing families and those of us who are retired and not looking to care for a big home.

What are some of your hobbies?

AQWhy did you choose Esplanade at Azario to call home?

I moved to Lakewood Ranch in 1998 and was a founding member of the LWR Country Club. When my kids went off to college, I decided to try St. Pete Beach life. I loved the area, but the golf courses are older and many are not well cared for. One day in passing by there was a sign for Azario and I made a trip to check it out - what a find!

When your neighborhood has all the amenities of your vacation destinations, this brings value to your daily life and property investment. Being retired gives me the advantage to travel to lots of areas and I enjoy hiking, touring, cruising and visiting family and friends.

What is your favorite thing to do with visitors?

We love the beaches, the local places to eat and shop and looking forward to toasting the beautiful sunsets over the Azario horizons!

Cuban Sandwich

The Cubano, or Cuban Sandwich, came to Florida along with Cuban immigrants, in the 19th century and quickly became widely popular in the state. Prior to this, versions of the Cuban have been recorded in pre-colonial Cuba where yucca was used in place of bread and often the filling was fish or bird meat. It took the arrival of the Spanish, who introduced ham and pork, for the Cuban we know and love today to be born.

To make an authentic Cuban sandwich, it really requires Cuban bread which has been baked with a palmetto leaf on top; however, Ciabatta or French bread will absolutely suffice.

DIRECTIONS

1. Slice the bread in half and spread yellow mustard on the inside of the bread.

2. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each half.

3. Place a slice of sweet, cured ham on one half of the bread.

4. Place some mojo marinated pork on the other half of the bread.

5. On one half of the bread, place thickly cut pickles then close up the sandwich.

6. Place the Cuban sandwich on a lightly greased griddle. Take a heavy skillet and place it on top of the sandwich so the weight can press the sandwich down.

7. When the bottom begins to turn crisp, turn the sandwich over and repeat.
