WELLNESS

Easy Meditation for Beginners 5 REASONS WHY MEDITATION IS BENEFICIAL FOR THE BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT 1. Helps one to understand the root causes of body pain and builds coping mechanisms for pain relief 2. Helps to lower stress and increases mindfulness of what triggers stressors in one’s life 3. Helps to connect one with themselves and their surrounding environment 4. Increases focus, promotes better memory and information retention 5. Reduce brain chatter and clears the mind of the added noise of day-to-day life Meditation can be intimidating but what some do not realize is, meditation can be easier than you may think. Follow these basic steps, and start meditating today! First, make sure you’re somewhere where you can relax into this process, set a timer to help keep track of the time you meditate each day.

1) TAKE A SEAT Find a location that is both comfortable and quiet. Be sure to turn off any distractions like your television, smart phones, etc.

2) SET A TIME LIMIT Start off slow, try meditation for 10 minutes and see how you feel.

3) NOTICE YOUR BODY Choose a location that is comfortable for your body. Sitting on the ground is great but using a chair is okay too. Let your body relax and really begin to feel yourself molding into the surface you are sitting on.

4) FEEL YOUR BREATH When breathing, begin to really connect with the feeling of your breath entering and exiting the body. Feel how the oxygen expands your chest. Try to breath slow and steady.

5) NOTICE WHEN YOUR MIND HAS WANDERED It is natural for your mind to try to wander. Once you realize this is happening, begin to think about your breaths again, entering and exiting the body, try to feel each part of your body as you relax into the position that you are sitting. This will become easier with continued practice.

6) BE KIND TO YOUR WANDERING MIND Try not to get discouraged by your wondering thoughts. Simply reset and try again.

7) CLOSE WITH KINDNESS When you feel as though you’re finished with the exercise. Slowly open your eyes and reflect on the experience. Be aware of how you are feeling in that moment, how your body feels, how your mind feels. Are you swimming with emotion or are you calmer and more relaxed than before? Try to appreciate the peace even if it feels only a bit better before the exercise.

Once you become more comfortable with the process, increase your time meditating.

That’s it! That’s the exercise.

SPA

DIY Candy Cane Bath Bomb Luxury bath and body items are enjoyed by many and can be great holiday gifts but they can also be quite costly. This year, skip the long lines, and relieve some of the financial burden and make your own! These easy to make holiday bath bombs can be enjoyed all year long.

Recipe/Photo: Ruffles & Rain Boots

This recipe will make three (3) 2.2-inch bath bombs or about six (6) 1-inch, depending on the mold used. Grab a whisk if you have one and if not, a fork. INGREDIENTS » 1/2 cup baking soda » 1/4 cup Epsom salt (unscented) » 1/4 cup citric acid » 1/4 cup cornstarch » 2 tablespoons coconut oil (or other oil - jojoba, in liquid form) » 1 tablespoon water » 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil » 4-5 drops red or pink soap colorant (the mix will lighten, so color accordingly) » 2-3 candy canes, crushed or 10 peppermint candies, crushed » Plastic Christmas ornaments or plastic Christmas ornaments INSTRUCTIONS 1. Crush candy canes in a sealed plastic bag. Set aside until ready to mold.

2. In a large glass or metal bowl, add baking soda, Epsom salt, citric acid, and cornstarch. Whisk or stir with a fork to combine. 3. In a smaller bowl, add coconut oil (liquid), peppermint oil, colorant, and water. Stir well. 4. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry, working in 3-5 batches to avoid activating the mix. 5. Now this step depends on where you are … Grab the mix in your hand and squeeze it together. If it clumps (like damp sand), move on. If not, add 1 teaspoon of water and mix it in completely. Check for consistency again. 6. Once the mix is ready, place about 2 teaspoons of the crushed candy into each side of your mold. 7. Lightly pack down your mix on top of the candy in each side of the mold. Overfill each side slightly, bring both sides together, and press down tightly to close. 8. Keep the bath bombs in their molds for at least 8 hours, but overnight is best. Remove them by lightly tapping a spoon onto the mold and gently lifting off one side. 9. This Christmas bath bomb recipe is made to dry on the counter for 24 hours (or more) to help them harden and dry completely.

Gardening

IN FLORIDA Florida Wildlife Federation strongly supports home gardening projects that provide food, water, and shelter to native species. All species need certain life-sustaining necessities, such as the monarch butterfly needing the milkweed plant. The Florida Wildlife Federation strives to educate others about how they can individually take part in saving the state and the planet in their own backyard. One of the most important ways we can help native plants and animals is by eliminating invasive species in our gardens and public parks. These unwelcome species are a major problem in Florida; they can rapidly run wild, threatening many natural areas by overgrowing native plants. Some of the removal of invasive plants can require using herbicides or machinery and may best be done by professionals. But we can take steps in our own gardens, yards and neighborhoods to prevent the spread of some of these invaders. On the National Wildlife Federation’s website, you can find links to valuable information for gardening in Florida! Including information on how to garden for conservation and what plant species are preferred for our environment and climate. Visit floridawildlifefederation.org/ gardening-in-florida to learn more!
