Megan Michaux
YOUR LIFESTYLE MANAGER
Iam a graduate of Winston Salem State, class of 2016. GO RAMS! With a passion for event planning in both healthcare and the HOA realm, I enjoy having fun planning events and creating everlasting memories.
When I’m not orchestrating memorable experiences here at Northgate, you can find me soaking up quality time with my sister and nephews, spending time with my fur babies, catching the latest flick at the movies, online shopping, or diving into a gripping suspense or thriller novel.
I’m from the mountains here in North Carolina, so naturally I’m a nature enthusiast who finds solace in hiking trails and exploring new vacation destinations.
Laughter is my best companion and my daily vitamin, so anything that brings a smile to my face is a must. I cherish moments that bring me joy. Outside of work, I’m a fashion aficionado with a sneaker collection that’s constantly expanding - sneakers are my weakness!
Furry Friends
Meet Oreo
LOVED BY JUDY & JOHN LALAMA
Oreo LaLama, our almost 14-year-old teacup Morkie, weighs in at 6.8 pounds of “pawfect” joy. He also answers to Cookie and Poochie. At 14 years old, he qualifies for the Lifestyle Community in dog years, of course. Our small but mighty “in his own mind” boy loves to take power walks with dog mom Judy. He does enjoy giving sass to the big dogs like Graham, Stella, Roscoe, Jake, Gracie and Jasper. He also made some new friends in Memphis and Spud. He prefers people, loves a good belly rub, and treaties. His very best friend is his dog dad John whom he worships above everyone else on earth!
FEATURE YOUR FURRY FAMILY MEMBER
Contact your Lifestyle Manager to be featured in the next edition of the magazine. Answer a few questions about your furry, feathery, or scaly friend and share a couple pictures.
Don’t have a furry family of your own, but know a community Member who does? Nominate them to be the next Featured Furry Friend. Contact the Member to suggest the feature or your Lifestyle Manager to nominate anonymously.

Nancy & Dave Schollhammer
The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people who call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.
Dave and Nancy moved from Fenton, Michigan (an hour north of Detroit) last August with their two-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Memphis. They were tired of the cold weather in Michigan and wanted to be closer to Dave’s family. Dave, a Marine Corps veteran and former HR executive, is an avid golfer, pianist and former pilot. Nancy, an entrepreneur, has owned three different businesses in her career. She enjoys reading, traveling, playing games, and both she and Dave appreciate a good glass of wine.
They are excited that their daughter Morgan made the move to Charlotte from Chicago to be near family as well. You’ll find Dave on the golf course, walking the trail with Memphis, or at the gym. Nancy’s new passion is the Community Garden, and she also enjoys spending time at the Bark Park.

Mineral or Chemical Sunscreen Which Should You Choose?
As we spend more time outside this summer, you may be wondering how best to protect yourself from the sun’s damaging UV rays and reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. When choosing a sunscreen, you’ll see lots of terms, like physical, mineral and chemical. But what do these terms mean? And how do these sunscreens work to protect you from the sun’s damaging rays? Dermatologist Anisha Patel, M.D., explains.
MINERAL SUNSCREEN REFLECTS UV RAYS
The main difference between mineral (or physical) sunscreens and chemical sunscreens is how they handle the sun’s rays. The active ingredients in mineral sunscreens are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which create a barrier on your skin that reflects UV light. They don’t absorb into the skin.
“Mineral sunscreens offer the most protection because they’re literally creating a physical separation between you and the sun,” she notes.
“With physical blockers, if you can still see it, it’s still working,” Patel says. These products should be reapplied around every two hours, especially if you’ve been swimming or sweating.
If you don’t like the look of traditional mineral sunscreen, you may choose a tinted option. These offer the same mineral protection with a bit of color, so they blend more naturally, no matter your skin tone.
CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN ABSORBS UV RAYS
Most people don’t love the thick texture of mineral sunscreens, so they opt for chemical versions, even though they’re not as effective. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays by changing their chemical structure to reduce sun damage. Most chemical sunscreens contain at least one of the following active ingredients: oxybenzone,
octinoxate, cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octisalate, octocrylene, padimate O, sulisobenzone, and avobenzone. They come in both cream and spray form.
Chemical sunscreens wear off more quickly and need to be reapplied every couple of hours. And though the spray sunscreens may be more convenient, it’s easier to miss spots on your skin with sprays than with cream sunscreens.
Hybrid sunscreens have a combination of active ingredients including mineral and chemical compounds, allowing for a thinner formulation that rubs in better. With these types of sunscreens, you’ll still want to read the label to make sure you’re applying them correctly to get the most protection.
UPF CLOTHING CREATES PHYSICAL DEFENSE
Certain types of clothing and hats can offer more protection from the sun. These have an “ultraviolet protection factor” or UPF on the label. Sun-protective clothes can either be chemically treated or created with more tightly woven materials to block the sun. “You’ll want to look for darker colors or a tighter weave on the clothing to get the most protection,” Patel says. Shirts with long sleeves, pants, and hats with a wide brim are a good idea to keep the sun off your skin. Over time, chemically treated UPF clothing may lose its protection factor, so you should read the labels and replace these items as recommended to avoid getting burned.
Whether you choose mineral, chemical, or physical sun protection, Patel says the important thing is to be sun safe. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. “Even if it’s not the perfect sunscreen,” she says, “it’s better to wear something rather than nothing.”

How to Clean Wine Glasses Properly
FEATURED IN HOMES AND GARDENS!
National Manager of Food, Beverage & Culinary Experience, Patrick Scully, was recently featured in Homes and Gardens, where he shared tips and best practices for keeping your wine glasses in pristine condition!
TIP! – Use a coffee filter to polish your glasses! – Patrick shares, “This is a hack we use in restaurants and hotels because coffee filters won’t leave any lint and absorb any leftover water. Even lint-free microfiber rags can leave fabric particles.”
Top Tips for Hand Drying Wine Glasses:
» Hold the glass by the stem versus the bowl so you don’t smudge the glass when wiping the exterior.
» If there is no stem – or it’s time to dry the inside – have a microfiber towel in the hand that is holding the bowl/glass if it’s not large enough to cover your hand.
» After drying, ensure there’s no residue by holding the glasses up to a light.
» After your glasses are dry, place them over a bowl of hot water and allow the steam to enter the glass and kiss the outside. Just be careful not to burn yourself. Then, give them a quick polish.
Ultimately, properly cleaning wine glasses is about more than just hygiene and aesthetics, it’s essential to preserve the flavor of each wine. “You need to clean your wine glasses after each use, especially when switching between different wines. This gets rid of any lingering residue that can change the flavor,” explains Patrick. “Different shapes, sizes, or materials can enhance or diminish the
subtle flavors and aromas. Like how to store wine in your kitchen, quality glasses deserve quality care so true lovers of wine can fully savor each varietal.”
