Furry Friends Meet Cooper
LOVED BY TINA HUGULEY
Cooper is my mini golden doodle and he just celebrated his first birthday! He really loves his toys, especially his tennis balls, and will do just about anything for a treat. We are working on training, especially with people greeting – he’s so excited to meet people, but needs to learn to not jump.
I call him my “Mini-cooper.” He’s got some more training to do, but we’re excited to meet his furry friend neighbors and come out to the Bark Park for a Yappy Hour event.

Jessica, and our 15-year-old granddaughter Claire live in Texas. Our daughter Brooke and her two children, Lexi (14) and Preston (12) moved here from Colorado a month after we did. They live right around the corner from Northgate, making it easy for all of us to visit with each other.
Why did you choose Esplanade at Northgate?
We had been thinking that we would like a resort-style 55+ community. Our realtor sent us listings from Esplanade at Northgate and we decided to check it out. My daughter and I came to Charlotte to decide if we wanted to move here. I loved this community as soon as I saw it, called Bob and said I found us a home. He told me if I liked it to go ahead and sign a contract, so I did! Bob didn’t see the house until we moved here (he trusts me)! We are delighted to meet our neighbors and new neighbors as they build here. The Lifestyle programming is fantastic! Sunshine always has a smile on her face and an enriched activity calendar each month with so many events to choose from.
What new skills would you like to learn and why?
We are learning to play Pickleball and are always open to finding new hobbies. I am the club leader of the Garden Gates here at Northgate. We’re always looking for fellow gardening inclined Members to join the club and the activities Sunshine and I plan!
What’s your favorite food/drink?
When/how did you two meet?
QBob retired from GM and moved to Lake Havasu City, AZ in 1995 where I was living. He was tired of the Michigan cold. One day, I was reading the newspaper (this is before dating apps of today) and saw a personal ad for someone to go hiking with. I responded to the ad, and we met at a trailhead. We went on the hike, liked each other, made plans to meet for lunch and continued seeing each other. We married in 1997 and moved to Colorado because we were tired of the Arizona heat.
AHow many children/grandchildren do you have?
Bob didn’t have any children prior to our marriage, but is a great step-father and grandpa! We have two grown children and three grandchildren. Our son Brett, his wife
Our favorite foods that you just can’t go wrong with are steaks, any Mexican foods, and Italian. We are very much looking forward to the next installment of Lifestyle’s Cooking & Cocktail Series: The Perfect Pasta!
What are some hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
Bob likes to grill steaks, ribs and pork loin. I love crafts (scrapbooking, quilting, ceramics), gardening, and baking. We both love to travel.
What is something you believe everyone should do at least once in their life?
Go on a cruise! We have gone on about 18. Over the past 4 years we started taking our grandkids with us and they are hooked on cruising too!
Share your favorite joke with us. What would bears be without bees? Ears.

Creating a Bee Garden
Bees are pollinators and incredibly important wildlife. Bees visit flowers to feed on nectar and gather pollen to feed their young. In doing so bees spread some of that pollen and fertilize or “pollinate” the flowers, which then form seeds that become the next generation of plants. Those seeds are often packaged in fruits, berries and nuts that then become food for other animals, from birds to reptiles to mammals (including us). Those animals then disperse the seeds away from the parent plant in their droppings, which serve as fertilizer. Here are four things you can do in your own yard or other garden space to support native bees:
1) Plant Natives; 2) Reduce the Size of Your Lawn; 3) Stop Using Pesticides; and 4) Offer Nesting Habitat. To read the full article and learn more, visit blog.nwf.org/2023/06/creating-a-bee-garden
