The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people who call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.
Iwas born in 1950 in Bedford Stuyvesant, New York. It was a low middle class community where kids played in the street until it got dark. Parents just waited for children to come home; no one worried if the kids were safe - it was just expected. Stick ball was very popular as well as stoop ball and handball. People had one phone in their house that was connected to the wall, if you were lucky. People my age now call it the “good old days.”
I am a first generation, natural born American on my father’s side. He expected his children to behave and go to school. As most parents at the time, we had to be more educated than our parents. He instilled in me to never give up. I was an average student, getting average grades in elementary school. I watched my dad work 7 days a week, 10-14 hours a day, his entire life. That was not for me. I wanted the easy way out. I was pretty good at math so when I went to college, I studied for a business degree.
I graduated with honors, was in the Honor Society, and received a job working in a small accounting firm. They gave me a small welcome party and then sat me down at a desk, put papers next to me, and told me to go to work. I picked up the pencil and just looked at it for a while. This was not going to make me happy. It was fun in college getting A’s all the time, but now it’s real life forever. I got up and walked out. I returned to my parents’ house and felt lost in the world. I went back to school and studied chemistry. At graduation, I realized that to attain the life I desired, pursing a PhD was necessary. As time passed, I found myself growing older, yet still dissatisfied with my circumstances. I felt like a lost soul, yearning for fulfillment
One day, I was trying to do a crossword puzzle and there was an advertisement, “Be A Doctor, Come to Mexico.” On a lark I filled out the application and sent it in. A few weeks later I received a letter requesting my college transcripts and recommendations. The next thing I knew I was admitted, and it was the best accident that ever happened to me. Within one year I was in love with medicine. I found it exciting and fulfilling; I had a mission in my life. In residency, I excelled and was awarded the position of Chief Resident in Pediatrics (that was equal to being like Ben Casey, for those who are my age).
It took many years to understand the lesson my father taught me - never accept doing less than what you want. I feel that I helped, advised, and educated many young people through the years. My patients have become doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers, pilots for major airlines, police, an EMS captain, and an archaeologist, just to name a few. Some of these people still text me once in a while just to remind me how much of an influence I had on their life.
In my third year of medical school, I had my second stroke of good luck. At the hospital Christmas party, a young pretty girl walked in. It was the first and only time that the blood bank personnel was invited to the party. She caught my eye and I decided to introduce myself to her. The only problem was, I had been seeing someone else. It just so happened that she too was involved with another guy, but I asked her for a date for that night and she agreed. Two years later we were married. Adrienne and I now have two grown children and five grandchildren. My life has come full circle. From a kid who was lost for a while to a complete and happy husband and father.

Proper Breathing
In the pursuit of a healthier and fitter lifestyle, we often focus on intense workouts, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest. However, one fundamental aspect that tends to be overlooked is the importance of proper breathing. Your breath is more than just a basic bodily function; it can be a powerful tool to enhance your fitness journey.
OXYGENATING YOUR MUSCLES
Effective breathing ensures a steady supply of oxygen to your muscles. During exercise, your muscles require increased oxygen to function optimally. By practicing deep, diaphragmatic breathing, you enhance oxygen intake, promoting better endurance and reducing the likelihood of premature fatigue.
IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Conscious breathing plays a pivotal role in enhancing energy efficiency during workouts. When you breathe efficiently, your body can better utilize the available oxygen, leading to improved cardiovascular health and overall stamina. This efficiency becomes especially crucial during high-intensity workouts and endurance training.
STRESS REDUCTION AND MIND-BODY CONNECTION
Beyond the physical benefits, proper breathing is a powerful stress-management tool. Deep, rhythmic breaths activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a sense of calm and reducing stress hormones. Integrating mindful breathing techniques into your fitness routine not only enhances physical performance but also fosters a strong mind-body connection.
ENHANCING FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION
Conscious breathing techniques can sharpen your focus and concentration during workouts. By bringing your attention to the present moment through controlled breathing, you enhance your mental resilience, making it easier to push through challenging exercises and maintain form.
BREATHING EXERCISES TO INCORPORATE
1. Diaphragmatic Breathing:
» Inhale deeply through your nose, expanding your diaphragm.
» Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth.
» Focus on making your breaths slow, controlled, and deliberate.
2. Box Breathing:
» Inhale for a count of four.
» Hold your breath for a count of four.
» Exhale for a count of four.
» Pause for a count of four before inhaling again.
3. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana):
» Sit comfortably and close your right nostril with your thumb.
» Inhale deeply through your left nostril.
» Close your left nostril with your ring finger and release your right nostril.
» Exhale through your right nostril.
» Repeat, alternating nostrils.
Incorporating mindful breathing into your fitness routine can elevate your overall well-being. So, next time you hit the gym or embark on a home workout, don’t forget to pay attention to your breath – it’s the invisible force that can take your fitness journey to new heights.
