Letter From the Lifestyle Team
ANGELITA HORTON YOUR LIFESTYLE MANAGER
Summer is Here!
“Embrace the sunshine, savor the moments - it’s midsummer magic!” As we step into the heart of summer, July and August beckon with the promise of boundless adventure and unforgettable experiences. The air is charged with excitement, inviting us to embrace the warmth of the sun and the allure of the great outdoors. From lively beach days spent basking in the sun to enchanting evenings under starlit skies, these months offer a canvas upon which to paint memories that will last a lifetime.
Whether it’s exploring new destinations, savoring delicious seasonal delights, or simply relishing the company of loved ones, July and August are a celebration of all that makes summer truly magical. So, let’s seize the day, soak up the sunshine, and revel in the joy of these sun-drenched months ahead. I’m looking forward to getting to know each of our Members better as I hit the ground running here at Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch.
Here’s a little about me. I am someone who relishes in outdoor pursuits, acquiring new knowledge, and fostering
a collaborative team spirit both at work and in my personal life. Throughout my career, I have held managerial roles where I cultivated an atmosphere of cohesive leadership. Viewing the workplace as an extension of my lifestyle, I have contributed to organizing various events and advancing clients’ and businesses’ visions.
Relocating from Arizona to Florida a few years back with my husband and family marked a departure from military life to embrace fresh opportunities. Possessing a deep empathy for others, I have lent my expertise to several non-profit organizations aiding individuals in overcoming adversity and finding solace. I aim to continue leveraging her expertise and adapt to the ethos of the Esplanade Lifestyle, enriching the experience for all involved.
I am excited about all the activities and events to come!
David & Barbra Butler
The Members of our community are truly what make this a wonderful place to live. In each edition, we will spotlight a Member, couple or family to showcase the amazing people that call our community home. If you would like to be featured or want to nominate another Member, please contact your Lifestyle Manager.
Why did you choose Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch?
AQWe were living in the Florida panhandle (Destin) and we wanted to be further south for warmer winter weather and safer cycling. We took month-long trips over three winters, going as far south as Naples. When we came to Esplanade at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel, we knew it was the right place for us. It has a resort-style atmosphere, a rural feel outside the gates, and yet it is convenient for essential businesses.
How did you two meet?
We met through running. Turning 50 and newly single, Barbara decided to run her first marathon, the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. David was the pacer (the person who holds the time flag for 26.2 miles). They were running acquaintances for several years before David decided to ask Barbara out for coffee after a 12-mile training run. They have been inseparable ever since! After years of being together, they married a few months ago and honeymooned in Italy, cycling the Adriatic coast.
What is the most exciting place you have traveled to and what made it so memorable?
In 2018, we cycled the Camino de Santiago, almost 600 miles in 11 days across Spain. It was so inspiring cycling alongside the pilgrims and hearing their stories about what prompted their long trek. We took detours into small cities, and being Catholic, we tried to stop at many of the ancient churches along the route. It was both a physical and a spiritual adventure for the two of us.
What are your hobbies?
We are all about being active! Cycling is our number one sport, although pickleball is a close second. It is not unusual for us to bike 40 miles in the morning and play 2-3 hours of pickleball the same night. Barbara is also an avid swimmer. In our “down time” we love to play cribbage. Our other hobby is traveling to see our children and grandchildren who are scattered from Hawaii to Tennessee.
Are you retired?
Yes, both of us are retired. David had a 30-year career at Federal Express working in Technology Innovation. Barbara was a Doctor of Audiology in private practice for 13 years. In 1997, she was awarded a patent for a dry eye implant and founded a medical manufacturing business which she ran for 22 years before selling the company.
Tell us something that may surprise people?
David has run 75 marathons and/or ultra marathons. In her earlier life, Barbara was an expert seamstress, and was a backstage tailor for Miss USA pageants. Since retiring, she volunteers her time to lead chair exercise at memory care facilities.

MOVE YOUR FEET
Forget crunches. For a workout that really flattens your belly, get up and move your feet. Studies show walking is one of the best ways to burn body fat, and in less time than you may think. Research has found that 2 ½ hours of brisk walking a week, about 20 minutes a day, can shrink your belly by about one inch in just four weeks.
Find the right pace to push yourself with all-out effort, but at a safe time of the day. Warm-ups and cool-downs are always needed whether walking indoors on the treadmill or outside. For the advanced walkers, shake up the intensity with an on-again off-again burst of energy. It will give you the most efficient, calorie-burning workout possible. Find your path and get moving throughout your community.
Giving Back
Highlighting the most recent charitable efforts in the community.
Thank you to our generous Esplanade Members for joining the Caring Neighbors in collecting items for the Cereal for Summer food drive that took place May 1 - 25, benefiting Feeding Tampa Bay. The Acai Addict Smoothie is a delicious and nutrient-packed beverage that offers numerous health benefits. Adding acai and chia seeds to a smoothie can significantly enhance its nutritional value and health benefits. Acai berries, native to the Amazon rainforest, are renowned for their high antioxidant content, particularly anthocyanins, which help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. These antioxidants can aid in reducing inflammation, boosting heart health, and supporting skin health by protecting against oxidative stress. Acai also contains healthy fats, fiber, and essential nutrients such as vitamin A, calcium, and iron, which contribute to overall wellbeing and can improve energy levels and digestion.
Chia seeds, on the other hand, are a powerhouse of nutrients packed into a tiny package. They are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for brain health and reducing inflammation. Additionally, chia seeds are rich in fiber, which aids in digestion, helps maintain blood sugar levels, and promotes a feeling of fullness, which can be beneficial for weight management. They also contain highquality protein, essential minerals like magnesium and calcium, and a variety of antioxidants. When added to a smoothie, chia seeds expand and form a gel-like consistency, which can enhance the texture of the drink while providing a slow release of energy throughout the day.
Combining acai and chia seeds in a smoothie creates a synergistic effect that maximizes their individual health benefits. The antioxidants from acai and the omega-3 fatty acids from chia seeds work together to support cardiovascular health, improve cognitive function, and enhance overall vitality. The fiber content from both ingredients promotes a healthy digestive system and can aid in detoxification. Moreover, this combination provides a balanced profile of essential nutrients that can boost the immune system, improve skin health, and increase energy levels. For those looking to optimize their nutrition in a convenient and delicious way, adding acai and chia seeds to smoothies is an excellent choice.
How to Clean Wine Glasses Properly
FEATURED IN HOMES AND GARDENS!
National Manager of Food, Beverage & Culinary Experience, Patrick Scully, was recently featured in Homes and Gardens, where he shared tips and best practices for keeping your wine glasses in pristine condition!
TIP! – Use a coffee filter to polish your glasses! – Patrick shares, “This is a hack we use in restaurants and hotels because coffee filters won’t leave any lint and absorb any leftover water. Even lint-free microfiber rags can leave fabric particles.”
Top Tips for Hand Drying Wine Glasses:
» Hold the glass by the stem versus the bowl so you don’t smudge the glass when wiping the exterior.
» If there is no stem – or it’s time to dry the inside – have a microfiber towel in the hand that is holding the bowl/glass if it’s not large enough to cover your hand.
» After drying, ensure there’s no residue by holding the glasses up to a light.
» After your glasses are dry, place them over a bowl of hot water and allow the steam to enter the glass and kiss the outside. Just be careful not to burn yourself. Then, give them a quick polish.
Ultimately, properly cleaning wine glasses is about more than just hygiene and aesthetics, it’s essential to preserve the flavor of each wine. “You need to clean your wine glasses after each use, especially when switching between different wines. This gets rid of any lingering residue that can change the flavor,” explains Patrick. “Different shapes, sizes, or materials can enhance or diminish the subtle flavors and aromas. Like how to store wine in your kitchen, quality glasses deserve quality care so true lovers of wine can fully savor each varietal.”
