August Happenings

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge By the end of this month summer will be almost over. This summer was great for my daughter and me. She loved her summer camp and was totally worn out when I picked her up. Isn’t that every parent’s dream? Before this month is over, I will go to the beach at least once. I just love listening to the ocean as the waves hit the shoreline. It’s so peaceful. Swimming in the ocean is a different story. Salt water has always had this sticky feeling to it, but my daughter doesn’t seem to mind one bit. So, I conclude that it is a matter of opinion. If you go to the beach, don’t forget your umbrella and beach chair or you will find yourself paying an outrageous price for this musthave beach luxury. By the time summer ends, I either feel like a lobster, beached whale, or a combination of both! Now, let’s talk about some exciting experiences that will send you crashing into something other than the shoreline this month.

Vegetable Gardening Summer Series

The UF/IFAS Extension Osceola County is holding a two-part series on vegetable gardening at the Poinciana Library. Part 1: Getting Ready for Fall Vegetable Gardening will be held on Tuesday, August 8th from 3pm-4pm and Part 2: Organic Vegetable Gardening will be held on Thursday, August 10th from 3pm-4pm. The event is free and you can register at ocagriculture. eventbrite.com. Just scroll through the upcoming events to find the August 8th event. Books will be on sale after each course if you’re interested in purchasing them. The Poinciana Library is located at 101 N Doverplum Avenue, Kissimmee, FL 34758.

Solar Eclipse

Unfortunately, the total phase of the solar eclipse won’t be visible in Orlando, but you will still be able to view the partial solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st at 2:51pm. Although it’s an amazing sight, I don’t want it to be the last thing you see, so please don’t forget to protect your eyes. If you plan on watching

as the moon covers a large portion on the sun, gear up with your special glasses...and I don’t mean shot glasses!

Florida Festival of New Musicals

If you enjoy musical theatre you might want to check out the Winter Park Playhouse (located at 711 Orange Avenue, Suite C, Winter Park, FL 32789) to see what they have going on. This month is the Florida Festival of New Musicals. Tickets are $10 per new musical or $50 for a 6-show Festival Fun Pass. The performance schedule is below. Please visit their website at www. winterparkplayhouse.org or contact them at 407-645-0145 or mail@winterparkplayhouse.org for more information. Performance Date

I can’t say I have had enough of the beach. On the other hand, I have had my fair share of UV rays even though I probably looked like Casper every time I applied sunblock. A Mid-Summer Update

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn We’re two months into summer and, true to form, Florida has delivered rain, rain, and more rain. At Solivita, everything is on track for Floralawn regarding mowing schedules, irrigation, etc. Chinch bug treatments are complete. We have had no big chinch bug breakouts this year; mostly we’re spot treating and keeping a close eye on potential problem areas. The whitefly, scale, and sod webworms are warm-weather pests that we continue to watch for and treat. Summer weather brings high heat with the rains and humidity. Just as we’re concerned about the safety of our ground crews working in the heat, we’re also concerned for active Solivita homeowners. We supply our ground crews with plenty of water and ice, and we encourage them to hydrate regularly and thoroughly. We also encourage them to take adequate resting periods to cool down. In our safety meetings, we educate team members on the dangers of heat stress and heat exhaustion and how to identify both.

take lightly. People who push through the symptoms of these conditions (fatigue, cramps, headache, nausea and dizziness) and continue to be active in the heat set themselves up for heat stroke, which can lead to unconsciousness and damage to the brain, muscles, and vital organs. One side-note for our green-thumbs out there: as you’re working around your potted plants and container gardens this summer, keep an eye out for snakes. They like to curl up in and around pots, so look twice before you reach in. No one wants to be surprised by a snake, especially by one that is venomous. September is coming up, and with it our second love-bug season of the year. May’s love-bug population was light this year due to the spring drought. Expect a normal fall showing of this insect that can be a big nuisance, but fortunately only comes out in force for several weeks. My next Coffee Talk is Friday, August 25th at 9am in the Starlite Ballroom. Bring your questions and I’ll do my best to answer!

If you enjoy being active outside during the summer, whether that’s cycling or walking or tending to the container plants on your walkways or courtyards, please heed our precautions above. Heat stress and heat exhaustion are not conditions to
