Happy Holidays Solivita!

BY RUDY BAUTISTA, LCAM SOLIVITA COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION MANAGER My dear Solivita, what an amazing year this has been for us and what growth we have seen in our beautiful community. We now have 5,000+ homes and we are still growing. Our beautiful Solivita is still in the Top 5 Best Value Active Adult Communities in the country. With all we have overcome this past year, I urge you to take this time to hug your loved ones and cherish the moments you spend with them, especially this holiday season. We all know that during gatherings some of our family members or friends can be a handful at times; however, at the end of the day, we are grateful for every one of them.

just a two-lane dirt road which led you to a gatehouse that was only staked out where it would eventually be built. Fast forward to now. Solivita is a community of over 5,000 homes with over 10,000 residents and is one of the top five communities in the nation. What an amazing transformation I’ve witnessed. During my two careers here in Solivita, I have learned that change is a part of life. We cannot let change negatively affect how we live our lives and limit the time we can spend with our loved ones. Your Evergreen Association Team (pictured below) wishes you a wonderful Holiday Season and a Welcoming Bright 2022! We hope you embrace change with open arms as you would your loved ones.

As I reflect on my early days here on site in December 1999, I have seen such change here. Back then, the main entry was

Activities Updates & Reminders BY JANA MALIK DIRECTOR OF ACTIVITIES

What’s the Difference?

This month, since there will be so many wonderful Activities parties going on, I thought it would be a good time to go over a couple of items regarding reselling event tickets and the differentiation between Restaurants and Catering. For the purpose of this article, I will specifically be addressing Solivita Catering.

Reselling Activities Event Tickets

We understand and know that plans change, and you may resell your Activities event tickets to another resident. We need to make sure that you understand, if you purchase a ticket previously purchased by another resident, you are agreeing to all of the selections related to the original purchase. For example, if the ticket asked for a pre-selected food choice meal or a specific T-shirt size, you take on that pre-selected food choice and that specific T-shirt size. We try our best to make accommodations, but we may not be able to due to ordering deadlines or specific food choice count already given to Catering. We offer refunds up to five business days before the event, unless it is a charity event in which we do not offer any refund.

Restaurants

8

Catering

Confined to their building establishment.

Can be setup almost anywhere.

Full menu, guest choice.

Pre-set menu determined by the event host, guest to choose from hosts’ menu choices. Vegetarian, fish or gluten-free meal is available if advised to the event host in advance.

Guest can modify ingredient list as each dish is made to order.

Ingredients cannot be modified as large quantities of food are made at once before the event begins.

Food is prepared and served after a table of guests order.

Food is prepared in advance and is served to the whole room of guests at the same time.

Menu items are not typically sold out because restaurants order food several times a week.

Host gives final count to Catering one week before the event and that is the limit to the number of meals available to be served.

Steak can be cooked to guest’s desire.

All steaks are cooked to Medium temperature. Well done is accepted if advised to event host in advance.

Take out is permitted because food will be taken away by guest immediately after service.

Take out is NOT permitted as most catered events include activities after dinner, such as dancing, therefore food will be left out more than two hours which could lead to contamination and foodborne illness.

From the World of Fitness & Wellness BY JAMAR EDGE DIRECTOR OF FITNESS & WELLNESS Wow! I cannot believe it’s December! I’m excited, as it’s my favorite time of year to spend with loved ones and catch up on all that has been missed. I would like to share with you some holiday tips from the CDC to help keep you safe and healthy while you enjoy the holidays. For more articles and information, please visit cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpao/features.

7 CDC Health Tips for a Safe & Healthy Holiday

1. Eat Healthy and Be Active. It can be challenging to eat healthy and stay active during the holidays. Healthy eating is all about balance and moderation. Holiday parties and big family meals may tempt us away from our healthy eating habits. Allow yourself to have your favorite foods but stick to smaller servings and balance them with healthier options. Limit fats, salt, and sugary foods and drinks. Staying active can help you keep a healthy weight during the holiday season. Aim for at least 30 minutes five days a week. It’s important to move more and sit less. 2. Get Your Flu Vaccination. Influenza is more than a “bad cold.” It can result in serious health complications like pneumonia, bacterial infections, hospitalization, or death. Flu activity peaks between December and February and can last as late as May. If you didn’t yet get a flu vaccination this season, it’s not too late! 3. Food Safety. Food poisoning can ruin even the most festive celebrations - an estimated 1 in 6 Americans get sick from eating contaminated food. Take simple steps to when you prepare and serve holiday meals: Wash your hands and work surfaces before, during, and after preparing food, and before eating; Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separated during preparation; Cook food at the right internal temperature to kill harmful germs; Refrigerate perishable foods, including leftovers, within two hours of buying or cooking. 4. Handwashing. It is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs and to keep kids and adults healthy, especially during the winter months. Evidence shows handwashing can help prevent 1 in 5 respiratory illnesses like the cold or flu. 5. Cope with Stress. Everyone experiences stress from time to time. Feeling emotional and nervous or having trouble sleeping and eating can all be normal reactions to stress. Learning 10

healthy ways to cope with stress and getting the right care and support can help reduce stressful feelings and symptoms. 6. Travel Safety. Winter storms and cold temperatures can be dangerous. Ensure that your trip is safe: Get your car ready for cold weather; Don’t drink and drive; Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle to help prevent head injuries; Wear a seat belt every time you drive or ride. Anyone traveling more than four hours, whether by air, car, bus, or train, can be at risk for blood clots because you are sitting still in a confined space for long periods of time. Protect yourself by moving your legs frequently, know the symptoms of blood clots and when to get help. 7. Prevent Injuries. Injuries can happen anywhere, and many occur around holidays. Take these steps: Use step stools instead of climbing on furniture when hanging decorations; Leave fireworks to the professionals; Prevent chain saw injuries by wearing proper protective clothing and glasses.

Did You Know?

The Palms has a new feature. If you are a fan of some good ole backyard fun, you should know the game cornhole. We converted the old bocce courts into four cornhole pits. We have recently seen a club form, as well as events planned around the game itself. The great thing about it is that you don’t have to be the best of athletes or in A+ shape to play. The next time you’re at The Palms, give it a go. I’m sure you will enjoy yourself.

In Parting ...

This year had its share of ups and downs, but we persevered. For those waiting to change to a healthy lifestyle as your New Year’s Resolution, how about you get a head start on it, and resolve to be healthier now. Stay Healthy Solivita. See you in the New Year! Jamar Edge 863-496-3522 jedge@evergreen-LM.com

Alligators Living Among Us

We have all seen a Florida alligator at least once. Some of us have seen them a little closer than others. They have a tendency to pop up in the least likely of spots. Or so we think ... An alligator’s natural habitat can be found anywhere there is a body of water. That’s right, anywhere there is water! As we have planned our communities and shifted dirt from one area to the other, created rain runoff areas, picked beautiful lakefront properties to build your home, shifted the dirt to level the property, and created your Amenity Centers, boating areas and lake access areas, we have essentially invaded their habitat. Alligators are cold blooded animals. Due to the nature of how their bodies maintain temperature, they must have ways to heat and cool their bodies throughout the day. An ideal area for an alligator to populate is one with a sunning bank, a pond, stream or lake, and a food supply. Sound like a familiar environment?? Why not get rid of them? They are huge scary reptiles that just look creepy. They’re powerful jaws are full of teeth, their skin looks slimy and they hide in the mud! It is because they are a “keystone” species in their ecosystems. Just as lions are the kings of the jungle, in many cases the alligator is the king of the swamps. They are usually the top predator in their area only to be surpassed by humans. They are naturally thinning the population of other animals and keeping a balance within that ecosystem. Without this thinning, the food availability for the other species and the plant life balance could throw off the supply and demand with in an ecosystem. 12

That being said, though alligators hunt for food, they are opportunists. They will eat anything available to them, including, fish, frogs, birds, turtles, insects, snakes, small mammals, other alligators, deer, and wild hogs. Once the prey is caught, it is typically swallowed whole. They typically will not physically go into a new area to find one type of food. Alligators can use their jaws to break bones and turtle shells if needed. They also have a flap in the back of their throats that covers their airway to allow it to scoop water animals, like fish, without the water going down into their lungs. Have you ever heard of alligators living in the sewers? They don’t find many in New York, but in Florida it is a possibility! You know that picture you have created in your head right now of an alligator in a dark sewer tunnel? Did you know that is very similar to their natural dens? Alligators are natural burrowers. They create Gator Holes where they burrow into the earth and create “holes” that will fill with water during wet seasons and retain water during dry seasons providing for water storage for their ecosystem when water may not be readily available otherwise. They also create big caves and tunnels under the surface of the water where they can hide their stockpile of food, rest and reproduce. These can be tall enough to keep an air pocket for the alligator to breathe and deep enough for the entire length of the gators body. These later become homes for other aquatic life after an alligator has moved to another location. Generally, an alligator may be deemed a nuisance if it is greater than 4 feet in length and the caller believes that is poses a threat to people, pets or property. To report a possible nuisance alligator, REFLECTIONS | DECEMBER 2021

Department Articles Alligator article continued from page 12

please call toll free at 866-392-4286 for it to be evaluated or removed. In the State of Florida, you must obtain a permit and carry specific licenses to hunt or harvest an alligator from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. If a complaint meets the criteria, SNAP will issue a permit to a contracted nuisance alligator trapper authorizing the removal of the animal. Complainants must be able to grant legal access to the property on which an alligator is located. But, in the case of private property or publicly managed property, such as an HOA community, the HOA manager or legal representative of such must give consent for them to enter the property for the removal. What do you do to protect yourself and your family from them? No one wants to encounter an angry alligator! You need to stay alert in areas where you are sure an alligator inhabits. They like to stay under the surface of the water and therefore are not readily spotted. During breeding season, alligators can become even more territorial while mating, making a nest, protecting the eggs and hatching. Mating season usually lasts from the end of April until the end of September when the eggs hatch. Alligators do stay with their young. If you encounter a nest and were to remove the eggs, a mother alligator will look for them! This is very important to remember this after hurricanes and rough storms! Never feed an alligator or swim or wade in the waters they are known to live in, especially at dusk or night when they naturally feed. When humans feed alligators, it causes them to lose their natural fear of humans and associate humans with a food source. Anything fed to an alligator changes their natural behavior, it

doesn’t matter if it is human food or raw meat. If you see someone feeding or harassing alligators, please report it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 888-404-3922. Feeding alligators is against the law and therefore is punishable. It is very important to keep Children and Pets away from the water’s edge. Do not allow dogs or children to swim or explore waters that a known alligator inhabits. Specifically in areas with signs warning you of an alligator’s presence or that is posted with no swimming/fishing signs. An alligator’s prey selection is usually based on size and opportunity and less likely on the recognition of a specific type of animal. Smaller pets and children are easier targets and resemble other smaller prey. Alligators are not slow moving animals! They can chase you if provoked. They have sharp claws and powerful tails to help them move and attack. If you encounter an alligator, run away. If anyone ever told you to run in a zigzag pattern, don’t. That’s a myth that will actually slow you down when you’re trying to get away! More often than not, the alligator will run from you first. A non-nuisance alligator will be just as afraid of you as you of it. Make sure as you move away, that the alligator won’t be cornered by the direction you take, as it could provoke a scared alligator. If you question if an alligator within your community is a danger, please call 866-392-4286. Remember, most of the time those alligators found within the community are just as scared of you as you are of them! Most of the time they will go out of their way to avoid you or the area you are in. In the case of large alligators, they have grown that big by staying away from people, or they would have been removed before they grew so big!

Vita, our newest volunteer, wants to help our residents, while getting to know others, and develop a better understanding of what is going on in the community. She, her husband, and her two dogs love living in Solivita.

Connie Rosenberg

Connie, a recent addition to the Resource Center volunteers; works in the office helping our residents. She and her husband moved to Solivita four years ago; prior to that she worked as a Benefits Administrator in New Jersey for over 20 years. Like many people, she and her husband fell in love with Solivita as soon as they drove in. Connie is busy all the time since she moved here; she is loving retirement.

Resource Center Manager Jane Thomas Meet More of Our Volunteers Agi Hyman

Agi was raised in France and moved to the United States in 1965. She met the love of her life and was married for more than 43 years before Norton passed away earlier this year. She and Norton retired to Solivita in 2012. Agi enjoys walking with her friends, playing board games, volunteering, but most of all she cherishes the memories of ballroom dancing with her husband and the lives they touched by sharing their passion of ballroom dancing.

Vita Baker

Vita lived on Long Island for her entire life before moving to Solivita. She and her husband took advantage of Discovery Days, and they just fell in love with Solivita “it felt like a vacation 18

Over the last year you have met all the volunteers that keep the Resource Center running. From volunteering in the office, serving on the advisory committee, helping at workshops, to assisting on special projects, the Resource Center could not function without our dedicated volunteers.

Our goal is to serve you, the residents of Solivita, by connecting you with the resources you want and need. Stay tuned for 2022. How to find AEDs in Solivita

BY THE SOLIVITA COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) You can download the smartphone app PulsePoint AED (yellow) for free. Search your phone app store for “PulsePoint AED.” It will open a map with your location centered and indicating the nearest AEDs. Click on the desired marker and it will describe its location and show a picture of it. This app will also work in other locales where AED locations have been entered into its database. There is also a listing of all AEDs in Solivita on our community website, SolivitaHOA.com. Once logged in, navigate to the HOA menu item > Community Information > AEDs > Click “List of AED Locations.” This information is provided by your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Committee Roundup SOLIVITA CLUB COMMITTEE

The committee wants to extend a HUGE thank you to some of our talented Solivita residents: Bella, Matt Law, Georgette Haydu, and Margaret & Michael Warner. This team stepped up to beautify our Solivita community by designing and painting stunning murals on The Village tower (see photo to the left). The team has completed the west facing wall and is currently working on the east wall. Stop by and admire the beautiful work of art. We will all enjoy it for years to come!

FITWELL COMMITTEE

Happy fall to all. How about some ideas from the Fitwell Committee? We recommend for bicycle riders to have a light at the front of their bicycle, and one in the rear, warning drivers of their existence. Think of this precaution as the same level of importance of bicycle riders wearing a helmet.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Holiday lighting and decorations are permitted to be placed upon the exterior portions of the home and upon the lot commencing

Please refrain from wearing shoes into the pool that you have been walking in. We recommend that you wear one pair of shoes to get to the pool, and switch to water shoes prior to entering the water.

December Around Solivita

BY BRAD THOMPSON BRANCH MANAGER, FLORALAWN Happy Holidays! This is always a lively season around Solivita, and our crews work hard to keep all the landscaping looking great for the various holiday events.

November Recap

Last month, we switched our mowing and detail schedules to our off-season calendar. Mowing is done bi-weekly now through March 2022. We also addressed the issue of Brown Patch Fungus disease last month. Throughout this cooler season, this disease will continue to be one of our top concerns ... watching out for the beginnings of it and aggressively treating it. This is a fungus that causes brown circles in the grass that grow larger as time goes on. We also keep an eye on other fungal diseases that impact turf at this time of year. Although temps are cooler and the air is drier, grass stays damp longer into the morning. It’s a perfect environment for fungus to gain a foothold.

Happy Holidays from your friends at

What We’re Up to in December

Have you noticed that we’re trimming the beds of native grasses along Solivita Boulevard? We’re trimming these grasses elsewhere in the community as well. We’re also in the middle of our fifth and final lawn fertilization, our final non-native palm fertilization, and our final shrub treatment for 2021.

Thank You, Solivita

I want to thank all the Solivita residents for a fifth great year in your community. During our first year we faced some challenges, including dealing with Hurricane Irma and the aftermath of that storm. Things settled down after that, and we haven’t had any storms as damaging as that one since. We look forward to a great sixth year serving Solivita!

For Your 411

As always, if you have any questions, call us any time at 863225-9565. Or if you’re in the neighborhood, stop by the Admin building in The Village and chat with us in the office. We won’t have a Coffee Talk in December, but we’ll have one again in January. (We’ll give the date in the January Reflections). If you’ve never been to a Coffee Talk, come and check it out. It’s an informal setting where residents and Floralawn staff (me, and occasionally others) gather around coffee to chat about landscaping and lawn care in Solivita. Ask questions and get your info right from the horse’s mouth. All of us at Floralawn would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Be safe throughout the holiday season!
