From the World of Fitness & Wellness BY JAMAR EDGE DIRECTOR OF FITNESS & WELLNESS I’m hoping you are sticking to your New Year’s Resolution of being a healthier you. Speaking of a healthier you, we are looking forward to helping you with your progress. Here are a few things to help you out ….
Health Awareness Month
February is American Heart Month. We all know the effects of Heart disease but it can be prevented when we make healthy choices. Things as easy as replacing salt with different seasonings and adding physical activity to your daily routine are ways to keep your heart strong and healthy.
» Plan, Plan, Plan. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time. Make sure you do not forget to add heart healthy items to your grocery list. These tips apply not just to the month of February, but every month throughout the year. Do your heart a favor - protect it.
Polk Senior Games
It’s almost that time again. Once again, Solivita will play host to the Polk Senior Games Pickleball tournament. The tournament is scheduled for March 7th through March 9th, so come out and cheer on your fellow homeowners as they bring home the gold!!!
New Vendor!
OnSpot Dermatology mobile clinic is coming to Solivita on Friday, February 11th! OnSpot Dermatology is a full-service dermatology practice that makes it convenient to get the dermatology care you need by coming directly to YOU. Offering a complete range of general, cosmetic and surgical dermatology procedures, their COVID-safe medical clinics travel to communities, businesses and organizations throughout the area. They will be parked in the Freedom Park parking lot. OnSpot accepts all types of insurance, including Medicare, and is currently booking appointments for their visit on February 11th. To schedule your appointment, call 941-444-0011 or visit them online at onspotdermatology.com/solivita. Here are a few healthy heart tips: » Take things one step at a time. You do not need to tackle all of your goals at once. » Aim for lean protein. Cutting back on the amount of animal protein in your eating routine can be a gamechanger. Try to stay away from those processed meats. » Get and stay PHYSICAL!!! Find a version of exercise that you enjoy and stick with it. Both strength training and high-intensity interval training are both great ways of protecting the heart. » Take a break. Stress is hard on the heart. Find something that helps you relax and clears your mind. Meditation is a good option if you are looking for a calm activity. 4

Mark and Nancy McMahon at 268 New River Drive are the proud homeowners of this month’s choice. A big 2022 congratulations! During the cooler winter months and the COVID concerns, it is the perfect time to give the yard an early trim and thinning of excess growth, so your yard will be sprouting beautifully come spring. Solivita Walk/Run for a Cure Saturday, February 26th
Tony Handler (11-time cancer survivor) and his wife Narda (3time cancer survivor), along with the Solivita Cancer Support Group, invite you to join them for the 13th Annual Walk/Run for a Cure. All contributions (minimum of $15 donation, checks made payable to the American Cancer Society) will include a T-shirt for those who register by January 31st. Donations will go directly to the American Cancer Society to help fund the research and programs needed to find a cure for cancer. The event is also co-sponsored by Activities and Fitness & Wellness Departments. Many thanks to Jana, Jamar, Sheri, and their staff for helping to make this event possible. This event is not a race! You can either walk two miles (or any shorter distance that you are comfortable with), run/jog three miles, or just come out to support this good cause and cheer on the walkers and runners. Water will be provided on the course, and there will be snacks at the finish line. Event sign-in and T-shirt pickup will be between 8am-9am, with the Walk/Run starting at 9am in the Welcome Center courtyard behind the Admin Building. This event has proven to be a community-supported gathering of friends, neighbors, and supporters wanting to help in the fight against cancer. Many of our Solivita clubs and social groups participated, so get your group and friends together and join the fun. At the last event, we had 561 participants register. Let’s beat that record and help fund the research that might someday beat this disease! The event registration deadline is January 31st. To register, please see the information on the event ad on page 7 of this month’s edition of Reflections or navigate to SolivitaHOA.com > Calendar & Maps > Activities Events > Click on the Walk/Run event on the interactive calendar on February 26th. 6

Spa Talk: Skin Care Through Changing Seasons BY CRYSTAL BETHEA OWNER, RIVIERA SPA MASSAGE With the change in season, many people will notice a difference in the way their skin looks and feels. Many people find that as we move closer to winter, their skin becomes more dried out and flaky. The good news is there are things you can do to keep your skin looking good as the seasons change. Winter approaching doesn’t mean your skin has to look dull and dry. It also doesn’t mean you have to turn to chemicals in effort to maintain some of your tan throughout the fall and winter. There are much better options available to everyone who wants to take advantage of them.
Tips That Can Help Keep Skin Looking & Feeling Great as the Seasons Change:
also have risks, so opt for an organic spray tan instead. » Consider our full body glow service. Having one of our professionals exfoliate and moisturize your body will keep the skin smooth and unblemished. We know how hard it is to get our own back, right? » Drink plenty of water to maintain youthful cells. If the skin doesn’t get enough water, it will look aged and dehydrated. » Eat foods like strawberries, tomatoes, salmon, edamame, tea, carrots, broccoli, and avocado, which have nutrients that help protect the skin and keep it looking great. Happy Valentine’s Month! We hope to see you at the SPA!
» Dull skin can be countered by having regular facials. Facials remove dead and flaky skin and help restore a natural glow. They give skin an overall healthier appearance. » When winter approaches, it is important to moisturize your skin, so it doesn’t become dried out. After cleansing, follow with an anti-aging serum and apply a good quality moisturizer. » Bypass chemical tans that come in take-home spray bottles and lotions. They usually contain chemicals you should avoid putting on the skin and will most likely not provide the natural tan look most seek. Tanning booths

Check out what the stats were in previous months airing on Solivita Community Channel 732. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Happy New Year 2022!
BY BRAD THOMPSON BRANCH MANAGER, FLORALAWN
Our Winter Tasks
Are you loving our Florida winter weather? If you’re like me, as I watch news reports of snow and ice up north, it makes me glad for our mild temperatures and sunny skies. Our Floralawn crews continue to work hard on landscaping tasks around Solivita during the winter. Many of you are out and about, taking advantage of the great weather, and we’re committed to keeping your outdoor spaces beautiful in all seasons.
What We Did in January
Last month we kept busy with fertilizing the turf grass throughout Solivita. At Floralawn, we follow an annual fertilizing cycle, with the first application put down over January and February. Implementing this schedule results in thick, healthy grass in the spring. In January, we also completed another round of trimming and weeding. In addition, we continued the bi-monthly mowing schedule. Over the winter is when we conduct a thorough examination of the irrigation system in Solivita. As you can imagine, this is a huge job to check the pipes, pumps, valves, and spray heads that deliver water to all homes and common areas throughout the community. We completed the initial inspection in January plus the repair of many of the spray heads. Along with spray head repair, we also corrected spray patterns.
What We’re Doing in February
This month we start pruning the crape myrtle trees throughout Solivita. There are hundreds of crape myrtles in the community, so this job takes us through March to complete. A February task that we enjoy is changing out the annuals in all the common area beds. Residents seem to really like the change of color as well.
Training our Crews
Winter is when we hire new Floralawn crew members and give training to both new and established employees. We call our training the “Floralawn University.” Our crews learn shrub and tree pruning techniques, best mulching practices, safe driving of lawn equipment, safe use of landscaping tools, proper mowing techniques, how to install plants and identify diseases, and how to mix and apply herbicides. Sometimes Floralawn offers these classes to Solivita residents. Check our online calendar to see when classes are scheduled.
Next Coffee Talk
Our next coffee talk will be on February 18th at 9am in Mosaics. If you haven’t been to a Coffee Talk before, come and check it out! Call 863-225-9569 if you have any questions. Stay warm and healthy! Floralawn 863-225-9565 floralawn.com
