The R2R Resource Center and the National Honor Society at New Dimensions High School are offering you the next best thing: a team of teenagers who will be here to help you with your technology problems. This January, we are launching a pilot program called the “R2R Tech Solvers,” where students will come to Solivita to work with residents who have questions or problems with their devices - cell phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches any device small enough to be carried. Wildfires – What To Do
BY THE SOLIVITA COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) Hurricane season is over, but now that this is our dry season, there is a high likelihood of wildfires. Solivita is surrounded by undeveloped land and itself contains a large acreage of preserves. This is prime wildfire fodder.
Don’t Assume Someone has Called in a Fire if You See Smoke
Call in a sighting of smoke to 9-1-1. Tell the operator where you are (or were when you saw the smoke) and what direction it was from that position.
If a Fire Approaches Your Home:
• Alert your neighbors. • Use your own hose to wet down your property nearest the oncoming fire—yard, roof, shrubs. • Close all window and doors (interior, too).
• Prepare to evacuate. Watch for emergency vehicles that may be responding. • If necessary, grab a supply of meds, pets and pet food and valuable papers (insurance, medical, financial and contact info) and your disaster kit (you should already have) and get going. • Let a designated contact (friend or family?) know what you are doing and where you are going. Consider The Palms parking lot or the Village or Freedom Park as temporary location. Monitor the news to know when it is safe to return. This information is provided by your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team. CERT meets monthly (see the Reflections Calendar insert for the time and place).
Polk County Fire Rescue Awards On December 7th, Solivita CERT attended the Polk County Fire Rescue Awards and was presented with the Citizen Certificate of Appreciation. This award is presented to a citizen or group of citizens whose actions contributed to the mission of Polk County Fire Rescue and the safety of their community.
Over 3,000 residents living in Solivita have taken Hands Only CPR and Stop The Bleed classes through our Public Education division. The community boasts over 70 AEDs available in public spaces. Nearly 100 residents of Solivita are members of Polk County’s Community Emergency Response Team. And most impressive of all, the residents of Solivita lay claim to at least SEVEN successful saves utilizing those AEDs and CPR skills. To the residents of Solivita, and especially those who have taken these classes and joined the CERT Team, Polk County Fire Rescue would like to offer a heartfelt thanks. Active citizen involvement is a key piece in the mission of our organization. The energy and time you have devoted to being better neighbors and community members does not go unrecognized and for that we thank you!
Solivita has taken a keen interest in being one of the best educated and prepared communities in the county in reference to emergency response. When dispatched to calls in this neighborhood, the crews of Station 37 often arrive to citizens who have gone above and beyond to facilitate rapid and effective patient care.

How to Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Work
BY RITA MILIOS PSYCHOTHERAPIST & HOLISTIC WELLNESS COACH, RIVIERA SPA MASSAGE It’s the start of a new year, a time when many of us will make a New Year’s Resolution - a consciously created, self-imposed pledge to improve ourselves in some way during the coming year. Unfortunately, studies indicate that about 25% of New Year’s resolutions will be dropped within the first week, and fewer than half will remain intact after six months. Only about 8% will be fully followed through to completion. With the failure rate for New Year’s resolutions so high, you may think it is a hopeless task. However, by using the following strategies, you can you improve the chances that you will follow through on your resolution and reach your goal.
Don’t Use a New Year’s Resolution to “Reinvent” Yourself
Many of us go overboard and attempt to use our resolution to provide motivation for goals that are simply too lofty for us. Instead, aspire to make small realistic, achievable changes, based on your current lifestyle and habits.
Don’t Engage in “All or Nothing” Thinking
Don’t abandon your goal at the first sign of failure. Instead, view a misstep as a temporary setback rather than a final blow. Take the opportunity to re-group and renew your commitment. If your goal relates to an outcome that you are intensely interested in achieving, you can re-motivate yourself.
Use the Energy Generated from Small Successes as Stepping-Stones to More
Success breeds more success. By focusing on taking and succeeding at smaller, interim steps, you set up a success cycle that re-energizes itself and continually feeds your motivation.
Stay Focused on What You Want, Not on What You Don’t Want
A deprivation mindset, where you focus on what you are giving up, rather than what you are intending to achieve, will undermine the positive habit changes you need to make in order to reach your goal. Recognize that you do not have to completely give up your most cherished habits. You just have to better monitor how much and how often you use them, and engage in them in a more mindful, disciplined way. So instead of focusing on what you don’t want, focus on what you do want and consistently move toward that. Use positive self-talk, making encouraging, vs. discouraging, statements to yourself in your head. For example, whenever you make a choice that supports your goal for a healthier lifestyle, congratulate yourself (“Good choice!”) Even if your choice did not reinforce your intent, use positive, encouraging self-talk anyway, to motivate, rather than punish yourself. (“I didn’t exercise the full time that I intended to today, but I did exercise, and next time I can exercise longer.”)
Here are some helpful tips.
Start with the Right Attitude
An attitude that incorporates mindfulness is important. Mindfulness is about making informed decisions about your actions, taking into account your behaviors, as well as the thoughts and attitudes behind them. In mindfulness, will trumps emotion, and will is powered by intent. But you must also act on your commitment, whether you “feel” like it or not, because motivation follows action, it does not precede it.
Don’t Over-reach
Focus your New Year’s resolution on one specific goal. Then break down your goal into smaller pieces, until you get to an action step that you are willing to take. Once you are moving in the general direction of your goal, you can use the initial momentum to propel yourself forward to the next step. REFLECTIONS | JANUARY 2022

Happy New Year 2022!
BY BRAD THOMPSON BRANCH MANAGER, FLORALAWN Here we are in 2022 after a pretty crazy last couple of years. I know we all hope for a peaceful and healthy one ahead! At Floralawn, even though temps are cool, and the active growing season is a few months away, we’re still busy. Now is the time of year when we prep for the busyness of the spring and summer seasons. We’re setting schedules, prehiring, re-zoning, training staff, and acquiring new equipment. Those tasks all add up to a lot of work!
several small groups and rotate them throughout the property, training them on all the different subjects. Floralawn team members receive education on: » Proper equipment use » Herbicide treatment and the law » Proper shrub pruning techniques » Small equipment use » Crape myrtle pruning techniques
What We Did in December
Our next coffee talk will be on January 28th at 9am in Mosaics. Bring your questions and get answers. If you haven’t been to a Coffee Talk before, come and check it out. Hope to see you there!
In December we followed the bi-weekly mowing schedule, and we’ll continue to mow every other week until the first of April. At that time, we’ll go back to mowing weekly. Our detail crews don’t alter their schedules; they continue to carry out their tasks on a weekly basis.
Next Coffee Talk
We continue to monitor turfgrass throughout Solivita for Large Patch Fungus, as I mentioned in the last Reflections article. We treat it as needed to keep it under control.
Managing Fire Ants
This month we begin the first of the year’s lawn fertilizer and insecticide applications. Fire ants, a perpetual threat in central Florida, are best managed by insecticides. Fire ants tend to make taller mounds during the cooler months to get more warmth from sunshine. The taller mounds are easy for us to spot and treat.
Floralawn University
Over the next few months, our Floralawn staff will hold employee training courses here at Solivita. We divide our employees into
