The Centipede

By Sheri Wollschlager Club Manager I think we’re overdue for a laugh, don’t you? Below is a cute story (author unknown) that was sent to me. I hope you enjoy it! A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So, he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede (which is a 100-legged bug), that came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to church with him. So, he asked the centipede in the box, “Would you like to go to church with me today? We will have a good time.” But there was no answer from his new pet.

AUGUST SUBMISSIONS

This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again, “How about going to church with me and receive blessings?” But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So, he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation.

Calendar submissions and newsletter articles are due on Friday, June 29th. Club inserts are due by Friday, July 20th. All inserts must be approved by Club Manager, Sheri Wollschlager (email to croe@ evergreen-LM.com and swollschlager@evergreen-LM. com) before they are copied.

The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede’s house and shouted, “Hey, in there! Would you like to go to church with me and learn about God?”

SEPTEMBER SUBMISSIONS

Calendar submissions and newsletter articles are due on Wednesday, August 1st.

You are going to love this... This time, a little voice came out of the box, “I heard you the first time! I’M PUTTING MY SHOES ON!”

Sparkles Over Solivita!

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge What could possibly go wrong when you start the month out blasting fireworks into the sky? Come on, nothing is better than fireworks when it comes to a celebration! Everyone in my family loves fireworks...well except for my dog, Cupcake. However, she does enjoy everyone sneaking her food off the grill. Speaking of dogs makes me think of my favorite hot dogs, which are the Boars Head natural casing hot dogs. How yummy!! Apart from the fireworks and amazing food, I just love driving through Solivita this time of year. The Veterans Club does an amazing job demonstrating our American patriotism with U.S. flags proudly flying throughout the community. Fireworks are amazing, but they are not the only form of entertainment. Please find other important days and events this month below!

Independence Day

Wednesday, July 4th is the date that commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which declared the United States of America were no longer a part of Great Britain in 1776. It’s a day to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy in this great nation!

National Parents Day

Sunday, July 22nd is Parents Day! Those of us who are parents know everything we do for our children, so let’s not forget what our parents did for us by showing some love on the 22nd!

Climb to the Moon at Ponce Inlet

On Friday, July 27th from 7:30pm-9pm, climb to the top of Florida’s tallest lighthouse and learn the story about this National Historic Landmark while enjoying beverages and hors d’oeuvres. If this gets sold out, don’t worry because they will climb to the moon again on a select day each month through December. Please visit www.ponceinlet.org for more information and other available dates and times. Ponce Inlet is located at 4931 S. Peninsula Drive. Purchase tickets ($35 for non-members) in advance by contacting Angel Wuest at 386-761-1821, ext. 10 or admin@ponceinlet.org.

International Mango Festival

Head down south on July 14th-15th (from 9:30am-4:30pm) to the International Mango Festival, which will feature Mangos of Cuba. During the festival you will be able to purchase hand selected mango trees, buy merchandise, experience mango culinary demonstrations and much more. Please visit www. fairchildgarden.org or call 305-667-1651 for more information. The event will take place at 10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, FL 33156. Ticket Prices: $25 for adults; $18 for seniors 65 and up; $12 for children ages 6-17; and free for children 5 and under.

2018 Bartow Summer Antique Fair

There will be exhibitors offering a variety of antiques, collectibles, vintage, and retro items along Main Street (200 E. Main Street) in Bartow on July 14th from 8am-2pm. If you miss this date, don’t worry; it’s on the 2nd Saturday of each month and it’s FREE! Please visit mainstreetbartowfl.com/events-and-media/ for more information. Sparkles in the sky are amazingly beautiful just like people. You need a bunch of them coming together to create something spectacular. It’s obvious that we have that in Solivita, so just keep on sparkling. You all truly make Solivita unique and special!

SharkCon

This seems like it would be a magnificent event for those who love the ocean. Come out on Saturday, July 14th and Sunday, July 15th, from 10am-5pm, to see 14 speakers including some actors from the movie Jaws. There will be several vendors, activities,

Simple Guide to Food Supplies for Hurricane Season Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

Are you stocked up for this year’s hurricane season? Your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) recommends that you put together a supply of food for at least three days, as you may be without power or access to stores. If you had put aside food last year, please check expiration dates.

Items to Stock

Stock up on the items below. You can start by adding a few each week. • Canned and jarred meats, soups, stews, chili, canned fruits and vegetable (and a manual can opener). Without electricity you can heat foods or water on your gas grill. • Non-perishable (dry) foods – cereal, crackers, etc.; unsalted nuts; jelly and honey; peanut butter • Instant coffee, tea and cocoa; powdered drink mixes; fruit juices, vegetable juices, diet soda • Bottled water (one gallon per person, per day) • Pet food • Keep these items aside for emergencies (maybe in a plastic storage bin that’s not so large you can’t lift it).

When a Storm May Come

As a storm threatens, you’ll want to add these things below: • Fresh fruit (apples, oranges, bananas) and dried fruit (raisins and tropical mixes) • Cheese that doesn’t need refrigeration • Baked items - bread, muffins, bagels, cookies • More water for drinking and food prep • Ice (you can always make your own ice cubes and store them in zip-lock bags). In fact, filling up your freezer will help it remain cold longer. When a storm hits and we do lose power, eat up fresh meats and vegetables first. In December, go through your remaining emergency food supplies and donate excess or about-to-expire items to a food pantry in time for the holidays. For more suggestions on stocking a disaster kit, ask the Community Concierge for our handout or visit the CERT webpage on SolivitaHOA.com. (Navigate to the Club Directory and find CERT. Once there, look under Documents for “Disaster Supplies.”)

SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Here are Some Quick Facts on Speeding: • A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. • Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs. • Speed is a choice over which the driver has complete control. Check out the slide on the Community Channel (Channel 732) to see the monthly stats for Solivita.

QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? Do you have a suggestion for Reflections, Channel 732, or SolivitaHOA.com? Email inquires or comments to Carolyn Roe at croe@evergreen-LM. com or stop by the Communications Office.

Rain, Rain, Rain!

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Here at Solivita, we’re now solidly into summer! You may notice that grass grows almost before our eyes at this time of year. Our mowing crews stay very busy keeping residential lawns and common-area turf looking great. We have pulled back on the frequency of running Solivita’s sprinkler systems as we’re having daily downpours. There’s less need for irrigation when the grass is receiving plenty of rainwater. Last month we talked about that prominent summer lawn pest, the chinch bug. It pierces the stolon of the grass, sucking out moisture and nutritional content, destroying grass blades and then moving on to fresh areas of turf. Infestations of chinch bugs can rapidly kill large areas of turf, so we vigilantly apply pesticides, monitor grass for colonies and damage, and apply repeat treatments when necessary. This month we’ll also be looking for whitefly infestations and aphids. Whiteflies can be found on the undersides of leaves where they suck the juice from leaves and deplete foliage of nutrition that’s important for health and growth. Plants with whitefly colonies are usually stunted and have yellowing leaves.

Besides compromising the health of plants, sap-sucking pests like whiteflies and aphids also secrete a substance called honeydew. Black sooty mold is a fungus that feeds on honeydew. Plants covered in honeydew soon become covered in black sooty mold and become unsightly. This month we’ll continue monitoring Solivita’s plants for sap-sucking insects and actively treat infestations as they occur. Another Floralawn summer task is landscape hurricane prep, as hurricane season runs for six months from June 1st to December 1st. Our preparation for this year’s season is mostly done. We’ve trimmed trees away from roofs and walls where they could cause damage in a storm, and we continue to monitor palms and other trees throughout the community. Last year’s Hurricane Irma caused a lot of damage in Solivita and demonstrated that Mother Nature is not to be taken lightly, so we were doubly inspired to prepare well for this year’s hurricane season. If you have any questions about this article or Floralawn services, don’t hesitate to call us at 863-225-9565. I wish you a wonderful July!

Aphids are another insect that deplete plants of nutrition by sucking out their sap or juice. They are tiny black bugs. They often carry viruses that infect the plants they live on.

Fitness Instructor Spotlight: Gail Smith My love of line dancing extends to a period of over 25 years. I began teaching in 1991 in California, where I was born and raised. As life moved on, and so did we, I also taught classes in Washington state, Oregon, Colorado, and now Florida. It has been amazing to see the transformation and evolution of line dancing. It’s not just Country music anymore. We now dance to ALL types of music! I teach ALL levels, from Ultra Beginners (never danced before), to the Advanced dancers that have danced for many years.

is my dance to the song, Pontoon. It climbed the charts in 2012 and is still being danced all over the world. In fact, it is usually the first song played during open dance at many line dance events! I have also found that several of my dances have been submitted in French! I thought that was really cool. If you wish to see some of my dances on YouTube, search www.youtube.com with “Gail Smith Line Dance.”

I also choreograph dances...when the mood strikes me. I guess I should say, when the song grabs me! I have quite a few dances out there, but the one that has become the biggest hit on the charts

If I’m not on the dance floor, I can probably be found on the back of my husband’s Harley. We love riding and I sit on the back taking pictures. My husband calls it my “throne.”

Reflections |  July 2018 |

I also have a line dance website where you can check out the latest dances that I am teaching. These dances are being done around the world. There is a tab for my Solivita dancers on stepbystepwithgail.jimdo.com.

Remembering Tanya

Submitted By Sue Quattrochi Relay For Life Event Lead This year our signature event, “Rally for the Cure Village Event,” was on April 8th. Tanya Armstrong was our honorary survivor speaker who thanked everyone for supporting Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society. Throughout the day we celebrated Tanya along with many other Solivita survivors. During the evening, there were hundreds of candles lit in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. Their battle with cancer was courageous, as was Tanya’s fight. On May 1st, she closed her eyes in peace knowing that her fight with cancer was not without meaning. So, we say to Tanya, thank you for your spirit of life and we are so proud of our “Pink Warrior” who will never be forgotten!

The Empty Table Author Unknown

We call your attention to the small table that occupies a place of dignity and honor. It is set for one, symbolizing the fact that some of our loved ones are missing from this gathering. They have been diagnosed with cancer, and they are some of the names and faces behind luminaries. The chair is empty. Many of those who fought the battle with cancer are no longer with us, but rather than mourning their loss, we choose to celebrate their life. These people are unable to be with their loved ones and families now, so let us join together to recognize and honor them, and to bear witness to their struggle and their memory. The table is small, symbolizing the frailty of a single patient, sometimes alone in the fight against his or her disease. The tablecloth is white, symbolic of the medical profession: doctors, nurses and researchers who help fight the battle for life. The single rose in the vase signifies the enduring love of their families and friends and the strength of a patient’s will to fight

| 12 |

the disease that ultimately claimed many of them. The multicolored ribbons on the vase represents the ribbons worn on the lapels of millions who support a continued search for a cure for all cancers – cancers that are expected to kill over half a million people in the United States this year. A slice of lemon on the plate reminds us of the bitter battle against a deadly disease, a battle fought by more than 1.3 million new patients each year. The salt sprinkled on the plate reminds us of the countless tears of personal anguish shed by the patient and those shed by family members and friends who have lost a loved one. The glass is inverted in memory of those people who are not here to join our celebration of successes. But, the candle represents the light of hope that lives in the hearts of all of us – hope represented by cancer survivors and the hope for a cure discovered as a result of the detailed work of the medical profession made able through funds generated through American Cancer Society events such as Relay For Life.
