SPEED ENFORCEMENT

The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents within the Solivita community. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Did you know, a driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit?

Resident Spotlight: Harry Jenkins Turns 100!

I want to take this opportunity to recognize a very special and inspirational member of the Solivita community, Mr. Harry Jenkins. For those who know Harry, he loves his yoga! I have the privilege of interacting with and, more notably, being awestruck by Harry. I constantly ask myself, how on earth can he twist his body into those poses? I want to wish Harry a Happy 100th birthday and also say, thank you for your service. Harry served in both WWII and the Korean War. The following are messages from several residents who’ve had their lives touched by Harry.

Message from Bernadette F.

Harry is the epitome of the Nike slogan, “Just do it!” I have been practicing with him for about a year. I sometimes hide behind him so he does not see that I am unable to bend as far as he can because I know that if he sees me I’ll hear, “Is that the best you can do?” Haha. But in all seriousness, I am in complete awe of this man who started his yoga practice at the age of 80, completed 500 of training, and at 100 can bend himself like a pretzel. He strives to teach us the health benefits and techniques for breathing and body movement so we can whittle away our aches and pains and stay mentally balanced. He is my mentor and friend. Kudos Harry for turning 100! Just keep breathing like an elephant! Namaste!

Message from Nancy P.

I initially heard about Harry through a yoga instructor who mentioned that he was interested in starting a Yoga Club in the summer of 2021. Periodically, Tracy would substitute for other instructors and one day after class, she mentioned that Harry was in the building. I had to meet this legendary man that was in his late 90s. My first sight of Harry was him doing an open-

angle forward bend while sitting on the stretching platform near the walking track at RSF. Harry has been an inspiration to me and others. He attributes his longevity to a healthy, active lifestyle since he was a young boy growing up in Brooklyn. In the summer of 2022 the Yoga Club was established, and Harry led the group weekly through various stretching and strengthening routines, poses, breathing exercises, and meditation sessions. He freely shares his knowledge of the discipline and is willing to share his extensive library of yoga books, DVDs, and CDs. He only asks that you “learn how to breathe” and “keep your head, neck and vertebrae straight.” Harry, the Yoga Club wishes you a wonderful 100th birthday! Namaste.

Message from Karen C.

I’ve had a passion for yoga for many years, but always thought that at some point I wouldn’t be able to continue the practice. However, now that I’ve witnessed Harry doing yoga at 99, I realize there is no age limit! Harry is a true inspiration for what can be achieved by living a healthy lifestyle! He is a great example of how eating healthy foods in moderation, stretching and exercising regularly, and maintaining a calm and centered mindset can improve the quality of life throughout our golden years.

Message from Tracy W.

I met Harry at Yoga Teacher Training in 2015. We would arrive early, even before the instructor, and stand outside the training session and talk. One of the things that stood out to me is he mentioned how beautiful his mother was and spoke with such a sense of reverence regarding her. Before Harry and I would have these chats, a few people in the class mentioned there was a gentleman in his 90s attending the training. I remember looking for him, not realizing it was Harry because he has always presented as decades younger than his age. During the physical sessions of training, I noticed Harry was taking the most intense option. I know we’re not supposed to compare our yoga practice to others, but when I was getting exhausted and contemplating taking a less intense option, I would look over at Harry. Seeing him was such a motivation to keep up the intensity. When the training wrapped up, we took a group picture. For everyone to be in the picture, a camera was set up with a countdown clock. Harry was just getting out of the restroom and there were less than 10 seconds for everyone to get into the picture. A few

people in the class were calling to Harry to let him know, so he ran over and slid into the picture like a baseball player sliding into home plate, and he made it just in time. I didn’t see Harry until I was teaching at Solivita several years later. I am grateful for this reconnection because I always admired Harry’s attitude and how he seems unbothered. Some of the words of wisdom from Harry that have always stuck with me are: “Remember the yoga philosophy of non-attachment; The only thing preventing me from going farther in poses is my muscles; Practice deep breathing and take time to watch nature.” Lastly, what is quintessential Harry was when he was the torchbearer for the Solivita Olympics, I wanted to take a picture of him so I said, “Harry, smile!” and his response was, “Tell me a joke!”

Message from Jill L.

“Breathe. Be sure your head, neck, and vertebrae are in a straight line. Breathe! An elephant takes about ten breaths a minute and can live 100 years. A rabbit takes about forty, and lives five.” Whenever I step on my mat, Harry’s words come to mind. He is an inextricable part of my practice and has helped me to become not only more proficient in my asana work, but also encouraged me to learn much more about the various limbs of yoga deepening my understanding of this beautiful path and encouraging me to live a truer life. Thank you, Harry. Oh, Harry takes about ten breaths a minute.

Message from Lori G.

Meeting Harry for the first time can be an interesting experience. Honestly, it is both inspiring and a bit daunting... “How long have you been practicing,” and “Show me how you breathe,” set the tone for a yoga practice unlike any other. Harry’s military background likely contributes to his style and the way he controls our diverse group of women (and that isn’t always easy). All of us can learn something from Harry, his 100 years of life experience stores many life lessons, in addition to his vast yoga knowledge! Congratulations on your centenary birthday! Wishing you health and happiness always.

Message from Lew L.

For a long time Harry was an engaging mystery to me. He sort of still is. My wife is a member of Harry’s Yoga Club and her stories about him when she came home from the meetings were always intriguing. Who was this guru, army veteran, and quiet man in his late 90s? I finally sought Harry out at the Senior Olympics parade where he was being honored, and where he politely

greeted me. And, yup, he was indeed a quiet, veteran guru. The mystery will go on.

Message from Annie S.

Harry started the Yoga Club at age 98. We celebrated his 99th birthday last July. The club is ongoing. He has brought together a group who loves yoga and through him, a great connection of friendship developed. Harry’s focus is on the breath - distinct types of breathing and their effects. He encourages inhalation and exhalation to deepen the stretches and increase body alignment. Breath is life. Happy 100th birthday.

Message from Sonia M.

Sergeant, my Sergeant! Harry is a force of nature. His personality and enthusiasm make me always want to overcome my limits. He is of that brand of people that enough is never. And, that makes me want to be better.

Message from Marybeth D.

An inquisitive, passionate mind at 80 leads to new opportunities and challenges. Harry attended Simone’s Yoga Class at Solivita as a new resident and was hooked. He determined he would follow a new passion — YOGA. His desire to know and learn led to national certification in yoga instruction over the next few years. We are fortunate that he has shared his wisdom with many and cares for their success. Between 80 and 100 he has pursued many passions, including travel, photography, nutrition and healthy diets, sun salutations, and fantastic breathing. They say living a “yogic life” is a good way to keep yourself young. Whatever our friend Harry is doing, IT IS WORKING!!! Happy 100th Birthday Harry! Breathe, an example for ALL!

Thunderstorm & Lightning Safety

All thunderstorms are dangerous—even the almost daily ones we see in the summer. They may involve lightning, hail, straightline winds (and downbursts) up to 150 mph, flash floods and tornadoes. Severe thunderstorms (whose forecasts will trigger your weather radio) have winds of 58 mph or greater, hail larger than ¾ inch or spawn a tornado. Pay attention to forecasts for all thunderstorms and take cover immediately. They can “pop up” quickly.

However, it is lightning that kills more people in Florida than any other weather phenomenon. Central Florida experiences a very high incidence of lightning. Observe the 30/30 Rule: seek shelter if the “Flash-to-Bang” delay (length of time in seconds between an observed lightning flash and its subsequent thunder), is 30 SECONDS OR LESS, and remain under cover until 30 MINUTES AFTER the final clap of thunder.

A 30-second lead time is necessary prior to a storm’s arrival because of the possibility of distant strikes far ahead of the apparent thundercloud. A 30-minute wait after the last thunder is heard is necessary because the trailing storm clouds still carry

a lingering charge. This charge can produce lightning on the back edge of a storm, several minutes after the rain has ended.

Studies have shown most people struck by lightning are struck not at the height of a thunderstorm, but before and after the storm has peaked. This shows that many people are unaware of how far lightning can strike from its parent thunderstorm. DO NOT wait for the rain to start before seeking shelter, and DO NOT LEAVE SHELTER just because the rain has ended. This applies at our pools and on the golf courses or sports venues. Please comply when a Lifestyles attendant, security or golf course official asks you to move indoors. Be safe, not sorry!

The above is provided by your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team based on information from the National Weather Service.

If you are interested in CERT, come join us on the second Monday of the month. We meet at 1pm. In July, we will meet in the Ballroom. In August, we will meet in RSF2, and in September in the Ballroom.

Handicap Parking

As most Solivita residents are already aware; there are a very large number of handicap placards and license plates assigned within our gates. However, there are only a minimum number of handicap parking spots available. That’s one of the reasons the Polk County Sheriff’s Office has been requested to enforce handicap parking within Solivita.

Here are some very important facts you should be aware of if someone in your family has a handicap placard or plate assigned to them.

» Handicap permits are assigned to one person. They are not assigned to additional family members or your vehicle. Spouses do not share placards.

» Never let anyone else use your permit including close family members, relatives or friends.

» The person who is assigned the placard or handicapped license plate MUST be with the vehicle in order to park legally in a handicap space. Dropping a handicapped person off somewhere else with the non-permitted person parking in the space is a violation.

» NEVER park in a striped handicap access area. That space is designed to off load handicap equipment such as a wheel chair. Doing so is a violation with a fine up to $250 even if you have a handicap placard.

» If you have obtained a Florida driver’s license, an out of state handicap placard is no longer valid in Florida regardless of its expiration date. You must obtain a Florida handicap placard if you intend to park in a handicap space. Using an invalid permit is subject to the same penalties as a person who does not display a valid permit.

» Don’t place the placard on the dash or hang it from the rearview mirror with the number hidden or face down. The number must be facing the windshield unencumbered.

» Don’t use expired placards or alter the expiration date or identification numbers with a sharpie or by other means. They are easy to detect.

» Using the placard of a deceased person is a felony in Florida [F.S. 817.568 (8)(a)].

» Remember, it is untrue if anyone tells you that you don’t need your own placard and that you can share someone else’s. You must obtain your own placard. Violators will be cited and the handicap placard may be confiscated by a deputy or a parking enforcement specialist when being unlawfully abused.

» A deputy or a parking enforcement specialist has the right to demand to be shown the person’s disabled parking permit and driver license or state identification card when investigating the possibility of a violation of illegal parking. If such a request is refused, the person in charge of the vehicle may be charged with resisting an officer without violence.

These laws are enforced state wide and not just within Solivita. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has over two dozen Parking Enforcement Specialists who regularly patrol handicap parking throughout the county. Violations could result in warnings, citations and confiscation of the misused placards which are returned to the DMV where the handicap parking privilege is revoked.

Let’s please leave the handicap parking spaces open for the people who really need them.
