Bricklayer’s Report
HOLIDAY HOURS
By Sheri Wollschlager Club Manager
TUESDAY, JULY 4TH: INDEPENDENCE DAY
Possibly the funniest story we’ve seen in a long while, this is a bricklayer’s accident report, which was printed in the

The Palms: Closing at 6pm
Dear Sir - I am writing in response to your request for additional information in Block 3 of the accident report form. I put “poor planning” as the cause of my accident. You asked for a fuller explanation, and I trust the following details will be sufficient.
NEWSLETTER SUBMISSIONS
I am a bricklayer by trade. On the day of the accident I was working alone on the roof

of a new six-story building. When I completed my work, I found that I had some bricks left over. When weighed later, the bricks were found to be slightly in excess of 500 lbs. a pulley, which was attached to the side of the building on the sixth floor. Securing the rope at ground I went up to the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded the bricks into it. Then I went down and untied the rope, holding it tightly to ensure a slow descent of the bricks. You will note in Block 11 of the accident report form that I weigh 135 lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel, which was now proceeding downward at an equally impressive speed. This explained the fractured skull, minor abrasions and the broken collarbone, as listed in Section 3 of the accident report form. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately, by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly to the rope, in spite of beginning to experience pain. At approximately the

same time, however, the barrel of bricks hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel. Now devoid of the weight of the bricks, that barrel weighed approximately 50 lbs. I refer you again to my weight. As you can imagine, I began a rapid descent, down the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles, broken tooth and several lacerations on my legs and lower body. Here my luck began to change slightly. The encounter with the barrel seemed to slow me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell into the pile of bricks and fortunately only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, as I lay there on the pile of bricks, in pain, unable to move, I again lost my composure and presence of mind and let go of the rope and I lay there watching the empty barrel begin its journey back down onto me. This explains the two broken legs. I hope this answers your inquiry.

An Explosive Month of Fun! By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge
This month is going to literally be an “explosion”—that’s right, I am talking about fireworks! Not only will it be summer break, but also the Fourth of July so many of you will have company. Lifestyles always does such a fantastic job with fireworks, so you should just sit back relax and let them do the work for you on the 4th. I hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July as much as I do. My grill won’t be neglected as we plan on keeping it going with all kinds of goodies for the family. Some will fight the temptation of having all that yummy food around, but I will just enjoy the endless grilled buffet. Family, food and fireworks sound wonderful to me! Check out this month’s list of important days and exciting events to attend.
Independence Day
This federal holiday on July 4th is the anniversary of the publication of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776. Throughout the United States, Americans will celebrate with their families with patriotic decorations, burgers, hot dogs and the grand finale of fireworks.
Parents Day
On July 23rd, show some love and appreciation to both of your parents. Remember that we were all little kids that needed our diapers changed and for doing that alone parents deserve some gratitude. I could go into more details, but that’s totally unnecessary, as we all know just how much our parents have done for us.

Long Days, Good Rains!
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn If you see us breathing a little easier these days, it’s because the drought is over, rains are back, and everything is getting plenty of water. You may notice that sprinklers aren’t running as frequently. This is because we’re getting good rainfalls and we don’t need to run the irrigation system as much. July places us in the middle of summer, with chinch bug treatments well underway and hurricane prep complete. We, of course, continue to monitor palms and trees throughout Solivita, trimming them away from roofs and walls where they could cause damage during a storm. Summertime is when whitefly, aphids, and chinch bugs can be problematic, so we keep a vigilant watch for these pests. If you remember from last month’s Reflections article, chinch bugs love St. Augustine grass. They pierce the stolon, removing the nutritional value and can be responsible for large areas of grass dying. The whitefly is an insect that removes the nutritional value from the undersides of leaves. Plants that host whitefly populations experience leaf yellowing and stunted growth. The whitefly secretes a substance called honeydew, which attracts black sooty mold that deprives leaves of sunlight.
black insects also carry viruses which infect the plants they are living and feeding on. Aphids reproduce quickly and can damage or destroy whole plants or bushes. If you notice these pests on your plants, be assured that our team is actively watching for them. We use chemical substances to eradicate these pests. Summertime is when some of our residents work on their landscaping and install new plants. Please, before you plant, give us a call at Floralawn so that we can come out and make sure your new plantings will not block your sprinklers. Blocked sprinklers = dead grass. Our recommendation could be as simple as moving a plant two feet to the left or right. Have questions about material in this article or any other matter relating to Floralawn’s service? Call our customer service number at 863-225-9565 or drop by our office in the Admin building in the Village Center. My next Coffee Talk is Friday, July 28th at 9am in the Starlite Ballroom. Come on by!
Aphids, like whitefly, also remove nutritional value from leaves and plant stems and secrete honeydew on plants. These very tiny
CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE IN JULY JULY 1ST-AUGUST 4TH The Solivita Lifestyles Team is having a Toy Drive in July for the Nevers Foundation based in Orlando, FL. The foundation helps children who are homeless, with terminal illnesses, and former victims of child abuse. The charity is looking to bring Christmas twice this year by collecting gifts for tweens and teenagers that will bring happiness, joy and smiles to local children’s faces. Because the donations will be going to children who are in the hospital, the toys and gifts need to be new and unwrapped. Suggested toys include (but not limited to) cards, card games, board games, adult coloring books, iTunes gift cards, nail polish or make-up sets or accessories, craft sets, nerf balls, basketballs, footballs or any sport balls. No toys shaped like weapons please. Christmas wrapped collection boxes will be located in the Lifestyles Activities Office, the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center and The Palms lobby.
