Flags Over

Solivita

The Veterans Club of Solivita has established a project to display a U.S. Flag in front of every home within Solivita to recognize and celebrate selected holidays throughout the year. The club assigns a representative to place a 3’ x 5’ U.S. Flag in front of their home, on designated holidays, in a designated location, throughout the year. There is still time to be part of the Flags Over Solivita Program for 2019. There are three remaining holidays this year. Applications are available and can be printed from SolivitaHOA.com (under Veterans Club), on www.veteransclubofsolivita.com, or you may pick up a copy at the Concierge Desk. Applications, along with your $25 check (made out to VCS), can be mailed to Veterans Club of Solivita, P.O. Box 581770, Poinciana, FL 34758. Summer is Coming!

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge On the 21st of June we can bid spring farewell and welcome summer time. After this month is over, you will not have to wonder why they call Florida the Sunshine State! Make sure you drink lots of water! Pretend you are a camel. You may even feel like you’re in the desert, so it will be fitting. All jokes aside though, the summer heat is nothing to play around with in Florida, so please stay hydrated. If you are tired of filling yourself with fluid, you may want to try filling yourself with fun events and activities this month!

Silver Spurs Rodeo

The Silver Spurs Rodeo (located at 1875 Silver Spur Lane, Kissimmee, FL 34744) will be on June 1st at 7:30pm. Watch the sport of rodeo’s seven traditional events: bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, and women’s barrel racing. Regular adult tickets are $15 and they offer free admission for retired and active service members, as well as children 10 and under. Please call 321-6973495 or visit silverspursrodeo.com for more information.

The event will also feature live music, local artists, complimentary wine tours and tastings. You will also be able to purchase food and drinks. Father’s Day

Father’s Day, which falls on June 16th, became a permanent national holiday back in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the law. Each year the day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. It is so important for children to grow up with a father figure in their lives. Children look up to their fathers and admire their strength and the love they give their family. Make sure your dad knows that he holds a special place in your heart!

StampFest

StampFest, Stamping-Scrapbooking-Paper Crafting Convention, will be held on June 29th from 9am-5pm and June 30th from 10am-3pm. If you’re into papercrafts, this stamp and scrapbook

Watching Out for Bugs

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn This month we officially enter summer, although it feels like the summer season started a month ago. That’s Florida! June brings with it our famous daily downpours, humidity as thick as pudding, and grass that grows right in front of your eyes. It also brings the launch of Floralawn’s chinch bug control program.

Bees & Wasps

While chinch bug controls fall under our responsibilities, we want to urge residents to keep an eye out for other summer pest: bees and wasps. These insects range from mostly non-threatening (the mud-dauber who is fixated on building its dirt igloo) to quite aggressive (i.e., the yellow jacket).

Chinch Bugs

Chinch bugs are tiny pests that inflict damage on turf grasses. At less than a quarter of an inch long, they don’t do much damage singly, but their power is in their numbers. As many as 200 chinch bugs can occupy one square foot of grass. These voracious eaters love St. Augustine grass, which is what grows throughout Solivita. They eat at the bottoms of the grass blades and suck the sap out of the blades, causing the grass to turn yellow and then brown as it dies. Chinch bugs have a well-earned reputation for being the secondmost-expensive plant-feeding arthropod in Florida. They cause millions of dollars of damage every year in the southeast U.S. You may notice bees, wasps, and mud-daubers flying around your patios and courtyards. We encourage you to keep a can of wasp spray handy for these unwelcome visitors. While muddaubers don’t cause much harm, their mud nests leave stubborn stains when removed. Get rid of mud-dauber homes quickly and don’t allow them to grow. We will not be having a Coffee Talk this month. We’ll resume in July! Plan to come to the Starlite Ballroom to hang out with us for an hour or so. Check the July Reflections for the upcoming Coffee Talk date. This is why Floralawn is proactive and aggressive in implementing chinch bug controls in Solivita. We use a systemic application and diligently re-treat areas that need it. Since chinch bugs have developed resistance to systemic insecticides, we keep a careful watch on treated areas to make sure eradication is complete.

Any questions? Stop by our office in the Administration Building or call us at 863-225-9569.

For the next 8-10 weeks, in addition to our other tasks throughout the community, we’ll be carrying out chinch bug insecticide applications.

She was a Finalist for the Estela

|8|

Course Description: The Borinqueneers chronicles the neverbefore told story of the Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment, the only all-Hispanic unit in U.S. Army history. Through compelling interviews and rare archival footage, this film explores the unique experience of the 65th, culminating in the Korean War and the dramatic events that would threaten its very existence. Bound by a strong cultural identity, the men of the 65th were determined to prove their mettle, in spite of discrimination within the Army. Having performed with distinction early in the Korean War, the Borinqueneers of the 65th would face their greatest challenge in the fall of 1952, when more than 100 soldiers were arrested.

[ Solivita University] Nine years in the making, this award-winning film was aired nationally on PBS, the Pentagon Channel and on the Armed Forces Network. Screenings have taken place throughout the U.S. at film festivals, community organizations, universities and in military installations. There will be an archival photo display and a question-andanswer session with the participation of a Borinqueneer veteran will follow the film.

The Mythology of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome

Thursdays, July 11th, 18th and 25th Gator Room • 3pm Tuition: $20 per student Professor: Thomas Gallagher, PhD is a Solivita resident who has taught both literature and law during his career. He currently teaches at Valencia College. Course Description: We will explore the nature of Mythology, which are traditional stories handed down for generations about gods, kings and heroes. It will show the relationships between various gods and between gods and men. We will see who the principal gods were in each of the three cultures and what they did. We will learn which gods are still popular. Week 1: The Egyptian religion lasted for 3,500 years. There are hundreds of deities, some having an animal form, some depicted with human bodies and animal heads, and some with a human form. The Egyptians saw divinity in everything. They created a vast and confusing multitude of gods. Week 2: In Roman Mythology, the gods were utilitarian like the practical and unimaginative Romans themselves. These gods were expected to serve and protect men and when they failed to

Reflections |  June 2019 |

be useful their worship was curtailed. Week 3: In Greek Mythology, the gods mirrored the Greek qualities of faithfulness, being quarrelsome, unforgiving deities who enjoyed warring, banqueting and fornicating. They were always depicted in human form with beautiful, powerful bodies. They were not only humanly intelligible but extremely pleasing to the eye as well.

Disaster Preparedness – for CERT and for YOU! Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

Solivita CERT works all year to be prepared for a large-scale emergency—one where the resources of Polk County will be stretched thin and response times may be very lengthy. Such emergencies can include weather-related events or manmade situations. Here we worry mostly about hurricanes and tornadoes. Other natural events are less likely or less destructive. For example, floods in Solivita are mitigated by the many retention ponds; however, floods on roads in the area may still be significant. Non-weather-related events could include wildfires, chemical or gas spills, transportation accidents, flu pandemic, and terrorist activities.

Our Efforts at Disaster Preparedness Are: • Basic (FEMA) training taken by all our members • Refresher training at our monthly meetings • Advanced topic training (by Polk County Fire Rescue) • Drills

We have county-wide disaster drills and also our own local drills. On April 10, 2019, we conducted our own Annual Drill right here in Solivita, sending Search and Rescue teams to the far corners of our great community to exercise map skills, communications, documentation and incident control. Above is a photo of our participants just prior to dispatch taken by one of our members, Judie Chiappone.

| 10 |

While our main objective is to be prepared to respond, we also try to prepare our residents to be prepared as well.

The Basics of Preparedness for the Average Citizen Include:

• Be Informed »» Listen to the news and follow a developing storm or tornado watch. Have a weather radio (for when the power goes out). • Have a Plan »» Shelter-in-place is recommended for our homes, but evacuation may suit you. Where will you go? Whom will you inform? Who will look after your home during and after? • Have a Disaster Kit »» Food and water for 3 days. Essential tools and supplies, including tarp, rope, flashlights, yard gloves, etc. Get more information at the Concierge Desk or on SolivitaHOA.com under CERT (in Clubs), then in our “Documents.” JUST WAITING IS NOT PREPARING! Only you can prepare for your needs. This information is provided by your Community Emergency Response Team.

Safety for Summer By Madalyn Colon Site Supervisor Vital Security & Investigations

With a busy schedule and the great Florida sun giving us a reason to play outside, I wanted to share some good tips that should help to keep you safe this summer.

Heat Safety Tips

• Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking water steadily; don’t wait until you’re thirsty. • Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can cause water loss more rapidly. • Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors in the A/C. • Wear loose-fitting, lightly colored and lightweight clothes. • Check on friends and neighbors. • Minimize the use of heat-generating appliances like stoves or ovens. • If you exercise outside, do your training in the morning or evening when the heat is not as high. • Take cool showers or baths to cool down. • Check the local news/other outlets for important safety information.

Heat Complications

The following are some of the examples of different heat complications and the signs to identify each. • Heat Cramps: Sweating causes a loss of body salts and fluids, which can lead to heat cramps. An individual suffering from muscle spasms or pain due to the heat should move to a cool area, rest and hydrate.

• PRP Injections for Men and Women • Trigger Point injections • BOTOX • Sculpfra Fillers • Platelet Rich Plasma • IV Therapy with Choices of B-12, Hormone, Rejuv, Energy, Weight loss, Detox, Immunity, Muscle Recovery, Pain Management, Migraines, Jet Lag, Beauty Glow, and more

• Heat Exhaustion: If the body loses too much water and salt, heat exhaustion may result. Signs of heat exhaustion include fatigue, nausea, headache, excessive thirst, muscle aches/cramps, weakness, fainting, dizziness, confusion and anxiety. Move to a shady area, loosen and moisten clothing, and apply a cold compress or ice packs under arm pits and groin. Get the individual to cool water or a beverage (that does not contain alcohol or caffeine) if they are able to drink liquids.

We are super excited and ready to help make a difference in your overall wellness. If you’re looking for more information, please refer to our website at www.rivieraspamassage.com or give us a call at 407914-9168. See you soon!

• Heat Stroke: It can have the same symptoms as heat exhaustion. Watch for signs of rapidly progressing heatstroke, such as seizure, unconsciousness for longer than a few seconds, increased confusion, and moderate to severe difficulty breathing. If symptoms increase, call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY and continue cooling the individual.
