NOTICE REGARDING UPCOMING ACTIVITIES, FITNESS AND CLUB EVENTS At the time of printing the June edition of Reflections, there is still much uncertainty as to when events and gatherings, small or large, can resume in all Solivita Club Facilities due to the current health crisis caused by Coronavirus (COVID-19). You will see that some events have been cancelled or postponed throughout this edition, but others have not yet been determined. Please keep in mind that any event or gathering listed in the June Reflections may potentially be cancelled or postponed for the safety and wellness of our residents and guests. We sincerely appreciate your understanding during this time. We will keep you updated on all news and events through the community email blasts and SolivitaHOA.com as information becomes available.

Reopen Activities?

By Jana Malik Director of Activities As I write my article it is April 29th, only one day from the presumptive end of Florida’s “Stay at Home” order. Just as the state is evaluating a safe plan for reopening (not an easy task for sure), the Activities Team is also discussing operations going forward to safely resume the Activities program, Solivita University classes and club activities, using the Club facilities you have all come to enjoy. With so much uncertainty, your safety and the safety of our staff is paramount. Once the new policies are decided and before we begin this new chapter, we will inform everyone through the SolivitaHOA.com email blast. Make sure you have an account and select YES to opt in for email blasts. One thing for certain, the Activities Department will need time to shift, possibly partially, from the virtual community program that has been implemented to a revised/revamped/reinvented program. It may take some time, and will definitely be difficult, but like any other day, it will make us think outside the box. The Activities Office is always up for a challenge!

OPE N ?

You may notice that events are still being promoted throughout the newsletter and that is because of the early Reflections newsletter deadline and the unknown of the future. We’d rather include event material in case we are able to host them. If events are cancelled or postponed, we will continue to notify you through community email blasts.

Virtual Activities Program

If you are new to the Solivita community, or you are not receiving community email blasts, here is a recap of our “virtual” program. You can view all past submissions received on SolivitaHOA.com under the Lifestyles icon and then in the grey box on the left side of the webpage. Please know that most, if not all, activities within this virtual program will be discontinued once we are able to return to our normal Activities program. (If you want to view archived email blasts, you can view them on SolivitaHOA.com under Get Connected).

For Official Social and Recreational Solivita Clubs Only - Room Reservation Information

On the second business day of the month, the Activities Office opens the calendar a year from the month of that second business day. For example, on June 2, 2020, the entire month of June 2021 is open for new room reservations. In the past, Activities would have a line formed outside the office door on the second business day of the month to accommodate these reservations - first come, first serve. This was becoming inefficient as some club representatives were arriving and waiting as early as 1-4 hours before we started calling the first person. However, during the months of April and May when our offices were closed except to staff, we switched to accepting online room reservations requests through SolivitaHOA.com. Due to the fact that all the Solivita room calendars are available for Continued on page 6

Coping in the Era of COVID-19

Submitted by Seniors for Safe Schools and Communities (SSSC)

This article was prepared for your consideration by psychologists, psychiatric nurses and therapists who are members of Seniors for Safe Schools and Communities (SSSC). In some way, the COVID-19 pandemic has left its marks upon all our lives. How do we get through this very unusual, difficult time? What will the world be like when we emerge? While experiencing fear and anxiety is normal, we should not be frozen by fear. We can appreciate our strengths, values and relationships that make us who we are. These qualities remain despite the changes COVID-19 has made in all our lives, leaving us with feelings of loss and uncertainty. Many are frustrated by the inability to participate in favorite activities. For others, the absence of physical contact with family, especially grandchildren, has been the greatest burden. Significant financial loss, serious illness or the death of loved ones affect others. We question if the medical system will be able to meet the needs of an older population with underlying conditions. Feelings of vulnerability, isolation and concerns about the future all take a toll. Fortunately, we can take active steps toward healthy coping by self-care of our mental and physical health. Some draw strength from their faith/spirituality in trying times. All benefit from maintaining social connections and focusing on those aspects of our lives that remain consistent. When negative feelings significantly interfere with daily life, we can seek professional

help especially if the usual support systems are not available. We will soon be re-integrating into a world that may be much changed. Acceptance of this world can be liberating and enable us to adjust to new circumstances. Social distancing, wearing masks, Zoom meetings, and using remote technology for medical care are likely part of the “New Normal.” Familiar activities such as shopping or getting a haircut will be adapted until a vaccine and/or effective treatments exist. As a vulnerable age group, we need to be smart about entry by weighing risks vs. benefits. Instead of taking a cruise, a car trip may be an alternative. Caution without panic is the key. Life is made to be lived, and we can enjoy the upcoming years safely.

Suggested Activities While Sheltering in Place

• Take virtual field trips on Google Arts & Culture; stream concerts on Billboard.com; read a book to your grandchild via caribu.com. • Write actual letters; keep a journal or send thank-you notes to essential workers. • Set up an outdoor seating area in your front yard or porch to say hello to passing neighbors. • Learn a new skill or hobby; take online courses or practice a musical instrument.

Emergency Numbers

• Disaster Distress Helpline: 1-800-985-5990 • Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233 • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255

The Hurricane is Here!!! Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

Hurricane season runs from June 1st to the end of November. This season is expected to be more active than last. As an example, let’s experience a typical one here in this article.

• The double entry doors are braced (locked with a heavy piece of furniture against them) • All computers and electronics are covered with plastic bags

The hurricane watch was issued at 48 hours out with winds expected to be in hurricane range. Then the warning was issued at 36 hours away with observed winds over 74 mph. All the news outlets have weighed in. It is coming at us.

We are listening to weather reports and announcements from local authorities. We have set up our safe room and settled in: • We bring in our disaster kit • Our pet is comfortable (maybe in a small cage) • Our important papers are there in a waterproof container » Insurance policies, medical contacts, banking and financial information, computer ID’s and passwords • Any valuables you want to take with you are ready to go • We have our emergency food supplies, manual can opener, emergency water (one gallon per person for 3 days) • Our medications are handy and clearly labeled

During the Watch...

• We gassed up the car • Got cash from the ATM • Picked up any low prescriptions from the pharmacy (for at least 2 weeks) • Made sure our disaster kit was up to date (flashlights, batteries, tools, materials, etc.) • Picked up last-minute food items • Updated our water supply (purchased or self-stored)

We’re not worried, we’re prepared!

Now the Wind is Building Outside, But...

Our home is secure: • The yard has been policed • Outdoor furniture is either moved indoors or lashed together and tied down • Our storm shutters and protection are in place

|8|

Then a Window Shatters...

We use trash bags and duct tape from our disaster kit to seal off the window. Then remove an interior door using tools from our disaster kit and place it over the window opening and shore it up with a piece of furniture.

The Power Goes Off!

We already loaded the refrigerator with extra ice containers (have zip lock bags?) and turned the thermostat down to keep Continued on page 9

Reflections |  June 2020 |

[ Department] Articles

CERT article continued from page 8 food colder longer. A full fridge will warm more slowly. Next, we need to turn off most of the circuit breakers in the garage, especially the two for the A/C compressor (outside) and air handler (inside). However, we leave on at least one interior circuit, as well as a lamp or fan on that circuit to use as an indicator for the return of power. This effort will reduce the load on the electrical grid when power returns and still let you monitor its return. Continue monitoring the weather (maybe now on your batterybacked NOAA Weather Radio). When the storm outside subsides (after the eye has passed and the other wall as well), monitor the radio for the all-clear and any local instructions (e.g., boil water). While waiting for the power to come back on: • Inspect the interior of your home for leaks and water damage and the outside of your home and property for damage • Take photos of the damage for insurance purposes before trying to correct it • Set up your generator if you have one, but outdoors—not in your garage or lanai and be careful, as many serious storm injuries come from unsafe operation of generators

The below information was sent on behalf of the Polk County Supervisor of Elections. The components shown here are generated outside the Association and we are acting only as a conduit to get the information out to the community.

Mail In Ballot Voting Form If you are away at election time, or just prefer to vote in the comfort of your own home, you can Vote by Mail.

When power returns, turn on all of your circuit breakers and assist your neighbors as well.

If You Must Evacuate...

• Let your pre-arranged out-of-area contact know when and where you are going • Leave a key with someone who can enter your home to re-inspect if necessary • Take the clothing you will need and the items you had pulled into your safe room, including your disaster kit

Well, it’s Over and we Survived Because we Were Prepared Solivita CERT will assemble and begin their standard response (damage assessment, search and rescue and medical triage). If you need their assistance, the Command Post (once established as the storm recedes) can be reached at 863-496-0539.

Reflections |  June 2020 |

According to Florida law, vote by mail requests last for up to two (2) years, and then must be renewed. The R2R Resource Center is Here for You! June Workshop Postponed to September: Handyman Help Me!

Tuesday, September 29th • 10am • Ballroom Age is just a state of mind ... unless you’re a house! There is always something that requires maintenance or is in need of repair. If you can’t do the work yourself, it’s great to have the help of one of Solivita’s local handymen do the work for you. Our local handymen will cover the following topics in this workshop: • • • •

Much of this overwhelming support has come from the many clubs and organizations that help define Solivita. Residents who once gathered to play sports and games, learn or simply enjoy each other’s company, are now channeling their energies into providing food to overworked healthcare professionals and to those in need, sewing masks, raising money and aiding those who are having trouble coping with the current situation.

What things can I do before calling my handyman? How do I maintain my HVAC unit? What do I need in my toolbox? What are some tips and tricks I should know?

Come join us for this workshop and meet a few local handymen! There will be time at the end of the session to ask a few questions. All R2R Resource Center Workshops are free to Solivita residents, but advance registration is requested to help us prepare. Call 863-236-9973 or email SolivitaR2R@gmail. com to reserve your spot. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Community Spirit is Alive and Well in Solivita!

“Resident-to-Resident” - for us at the Resource Center, it has always defined our mission of assisting our Solivita neighbors in finding the connections, services and support that will help them live a better, more fulfilling life. However, today, as we have all been living in an environment no one could have foreseen, we have seen an unprecedented wave of community spirit that should make everyone proud to be part of Solivita. The “Resident-to-Resident” concept has grown to include not only Solivita residents, but our local caregivers, first responders and neighbors who are in need of food and basic life essentials.

Smashers Pickleball Club Making a Donation

We have learned of groups and individuals who: • Bring meals from local restaurants (including our own Grille) to hospital personnel, first responders, and residents who are unable to do so on their own • Collect food and monetary donations for food pantries that serve the many “food insecure” in our area • Sew masks for hospital personnel, first responders and residents • Raise money for the countless charitable organizations that have seen their fundraising efforts curtailed at the same time that their need is growing Continued on page 13

Reflections |  June 2020 |

[ Department] Articles

R2R article continued from page 12 We (at the Resource Center) are impressed not only with the generosity of our neighbors, but also with their creativity as well. They have found ways to help local restaurants stay in business, while providing meals for others. They realize the homeless need hygiene products as well as food. They have found unique ways to make masks as traditional craft supplies dry up. Fundraising efforts have been especially noteworthy. The Solivita Smashers collected more than $13,000 for two local food pantries (see photo on the preceding page). In addition, the neighborhoods in Solivita worked together to collect thousands of dollars and food donations for St. Rose of Lima Food Pantry. As we begin to emerge from our “safe at home” mandates, we will have a new appreciation for everything that we enjoyed before, from movies and restaurants to haircuts and pools. There is nothing we should appreciate more than the neighbors who showed true energy, compassion, and creativity to those around them. The heart and soul of Solivita!

Medical Equipment – We’ll Loan it to You

One of the Resource Center’s more critical efforts is the Medical Equipment Lending Program. We collect, maintain and loan out a wide variety of medical and mobility items, from wheelchairs and walkers, to shower chairs and crutches. We expect the need for medical equipment will increase as the state begins to reopen and residents are able to undergo elective surgeries and procedures. If you currently have a piece of borrowed equipment you no longer need, please contact the Resource Center to arrange for its return.

Reminder – Be Prepared for a Hurricane

CERT has information to help you prepare ahead of time for a hurricane. This information can be found on SolivitaHOA. com. To access this information, go to SolivitaHOA.com > Click the “Get Connected” icon at the top of the page > Then click the “Clubs” icon to access the CERT page. Spa Talk: Try This Breathing Exercise Submitted By Crystal Bethea Owner, Riviera Spa Massage

The following article was written by Anne Williams and is reproduced here courtesy of Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP). Do you ever find yourself unconsciously holding your breath when you’re tense? This can cause tension to build in your body and may let the chest collapse, leading to misalignment. Proper breathing provides oxygen to the muscles and body, helps you stay relaxed and centered, and even helps you maintain correct body alignment throughout your day. You can also use breathwork as part of a stress-reduction program by following this progressive relaxation exercise. 1. Begin by lying in a comfortable position without crossing your arms or legs, and focus on your breathing to create a slow, deep pattern. Inhale through your nose while counting to 10 and expanding your abdomen. Hold the breath for one second, and exhale through your nose on the count of 10. Inhale and exhale in this pattern five times. 2. Beginning with your head, tense your facial muscles as tightly as possible and count to five. Release the muscles completely, and sense the muscles feeling heavy and still. Work down your entire body, tensing muscle groups and then relaxing them. After the head, move to the neck, chest, arms and hands, abdomen, back, thighs and gluteals, lower legs, and feet. 3. After relaxing each set of muscles, mentally scan your body for any areas of remaining tension and ask those areas to relax completely. 4. Repeat the slow breathing exercise. 5. Gently begin to move your body to come out of the deeply relaxed state. Try using progressive relaxation directly before or after your sessions, directly before bed, or at any time during the day as a pick-me-up. Focus on taking full, deep, even, rhythmic breaths. With a little practice, you can become more aware of your own breathing patterns and use breathwork effectively as you move throughout your day. Quarantined or Not?

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge Not quite sure if we will be quarantined in June or not? Either way, by the end of the month, it will be summertime. The temperature will rise, requiring us to stay hydrated. We all need to drench ourselves in optimism. If you look for something positive, you can always find it. Nature has seemed to love our quarantine and I enjoy looking at nature. Therefore, I planted flowers and an herb garden, found something beautiful, and gave myself a new hobby. I think it shall grow with me as I enjoy looking at what nature has given me.

led our troops at every battle fought by Americans. Many brave men and women have died protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the moon. As Americans, we have every right to be proud of our culture, our nation, and our flag. So, raise the flag today and every day with pride!

Summer Begins

Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, is on Saturday, June 20th. If you like daylight this is your day!

Father’s Day

This day for dads will be celebrated on Sunday, June 21st. Our fathers all deserve a day dedicated to them, so give them all the love and appreciation they can handle on this special day. Speaking of enjoying nature, that is something we can all do! I would imagine that State Parks will open up soon (if they haven’t already), but to get updates, please visit floridastateparks.org. At least our important dates for the month will not change. For those dates, please read on!

Flag Day

Sunday, June 14th is Flag Day, which is an important day for all Americans. It is a day set aside to celebrate and show respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our flag represents our independence and our unity as a nation ... one nation, under God, indivisible. Our flag has a proud and glorious history. It has

We are going through a lot right now, but we can lean on each other for support. My family has set up a family group text message, linking all of us together, and that has worked out really well. I hope that sooner, rather than later, we can open up our wonderful community and we can all do what we love to do. Solitary confinement is just not my cup of tea! Yet I continue to boil the pot, hoping for a more appealing flavor of tea. When this is over, I want a tea party fit for the Mad Hatter himself! SPEED ENFORCEMENT The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Here are Some Quick Facts on Speeding: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs. Speed is a choice over which the driver has complete control.

Hello, Summer!

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Summer officially arrives on Saturday, June 20th. With the new season comes daily afternoon downpours, humidity thick enough to cut with a knife, and grass that grows an inch while you take a lap in the pool. Summer also brings the launch of our chinch-bug management protocols that we execute throughout Solivita over a period of eight to ten weeks. If you’re new to the southeast, you may not be familiar with chinch bugs. They are tiny little pests about 1/8 inch long. Their size belies the magnitude of the threat that they pose. Every year in the United States, these bugs cause millions of dollars of damage to turf and pasture grass.

the winter, and also down in the root systems. Spring brings them out in full force, and by summer, they are thriving and spreading. If you know what to look for, you can identify chinch bug damage quickly. The bugs feed at the bottom of the grass, sucking the juice out of the blades. The absence of sap plus a poison that chinch bugs inject into the blades causes the grass to wither, turn yellow or light brown, and die. Heavy chinch bug infestations can mean over 200 pests in one square foot of grass. They are voracious eaters and will move from a depleted area to fresh grass quickly. Cultural controls such as proper mowing, fertilization, and irrigation are beneficial, but the most effective control is a chemical application. Unfortunately, some systemic insecticides are not as effective as they used to be because chinch bugs have developed a resistance to them. Applications of these products must be repeated in sections or spots to completely eradicate infestations. The chinch bug is a tough pest to get rid of completely because of its resistance to chemicals. Our Floralawn crews are very familiar with chinch bugs and the damage they cause. Our crews work hard to implement all protocols, looking for early signs of infestations, and treating those areas aggressively.

St. Augustine is the favorite grass of chinch bugs, and because this lawn turf grows across Solivita, we definitely have our work cut out for us. Chinch bugs live at the bases of grass blades during

Chinch bug management is not Floralawn’s only summer task. Our crews continue to prepare for hurricane season by trimming trees and palms. Questions or comments? Call at 863-225-9565.

There is still time to be a part of the Flags Over Solivita Program for 2020 with three remaining holidays this year. At this time we are close to having over 2,500 flags that will be displayed throughout Solivita. This Program is open to all residents ... not just veterans. Applications are available and can be printed from SolivitaHOA.com (under Veterans Club), on veteransclubofsolivita.com, or you may pick up a copy at the Concierge Desk. Applications along with your $25 check (made out to VCS) can be mailed to Veterans Club of Solivita, P.O. Box 581770, Poinciana, FL 34758. If you’d like to volunteer or have any questions, email flagsoversolivita@gmail.com or call 863-512-3655.
