Happy Father’s Day to…
BY JANA MALIK DIRECTOR OF ACTIVITIES
The Activities department works with each and every department and on-site vendors in Solivita in order to collaborate and make sure the events you see, go off without a hitch. The top two internal departments that we work with the closest are Housekeeping and Maintenance.
In a previous article, I wrote about our Housekeeping Team and since June is the month we celebrate Father’s Day, we wanted to take this time to recognize the Maintenance Team. This is a group of seven men, mostly all are fathers, who work really hard making sure the Solivita Club facilities are being maintained, are safe and are in working order to look beautiful and operate functionally for all of your fun use.
Let me tell you more about this great group of men. First, they have a very organized woman who dispatches their assignments (work orders) and works closely with the Director of Maintenance, Luis Velez. They receive 20-30 work orders a day from the Evergreen Lifestyles Management team on items that we see, or things that residents see, and we relay to them. Several of them have technical trades including painting, electrical, plumbing and carpentry. Most of them have worked at Solivita for nine years or more.
When they work with Activities, we ask them to build props, put up barricades or orange fencing, hang banners, check electrical outlets and we ask for a Maintenance staff person to work with us at street party events to help us with assorted tasks and in case of any emergency issues. They also assist us and several of the clubs with putting up stage extension platforms for musical events.
When they are not helping Activities with events, they are busy from 7am-3pm with minor repairs, touch ups, lighting upgrades, pressure washing, cleaning exterior light fixtures and high windows, changing bulbs, assembling items, carpentry work and so much more within Solivita’s 250,000 sq. ft. amenity spaces and pools. If a project needs to be outsourced, they research, hire, contract and supervise their work. Interesting facts, there are 78 AC units and approximately 1,000 assorted lights inside and outside the facilities and at all the parking lots that are within their scope of work.
Solivita would not be a well-oiled machine without them, and we are all grateful we get to work with an extremely dedicated and knowledgeable team.
Smoking, Vaping, Cigars
Please remember, there is no smoking, vaping or cigar smoking permitted in the Club facilities, as well as in the Village Center, except at designated areas. In addition, when we are hosting events in the Village Center street, there is no smoking, cigars or vaping permitted within any event area. For the comfort of everyone around, we appreciate your help in this matter.

Solivita HOA Report
BY MARIE SEPE VICE PRESIDENT, SOLIVITA HOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Neighborhood Captains Program has received a lot of questions from our neighbors about how to report items that need landscaping attention. I’d like to share the process here. Below are quick recaps of what the contract scope of work is and what residents should expect from Floralawn. The following services will be provided and updated on SolivitaHOA.com as needed: Mowing, Shrub Pruning, Weeding, Fertilizing, Oak Tree Canopy Lifting, Crepe Myrtle Pruning, Ornamental Grasses Cut Back, Dog Waste Pick Up, Quarterly Annual Change Outs, and Monthly Irrigation Inspections.
Once on the website, click on the HOA tab on the top right side. Then, scroll below and click on the Floralawn tab. Lastly, click on Landscape Maintenance Schedules. This will give you schedules of when you can expect them in your area.
Mowing Services
• Mowing height for St. Augustine grass will be between 4”-5”. To alleviate soil/grass compaction and rutting, the contractor shall modify the mowing pattern monthly where practical.
• Due to wet side and/or backyards, the contractor is to mow with a 36’’ wide mower, in some cases, a 52” will be allowed.
• The blowing of debris will be performed last in each serviced area and will include the cleaning of all residential walkways from the front door out to the driveway and open patio.
Heavy Leaf Accumulation
During the non-growing season (December 1st - March 31st) shall be removed two times per month. Leaf debris shall not be blown or raked into the lawn or planting beds and must be disposed of off-site.
Detailing Planted Areas
This service is defined as trimming, weeding, pruning, and shaping of all shrubbery, ornamentals, and groundcover, removal of tree suckers as well as defining bed lines, tree rings, and removal of unwanted vegetation.
• Pruning services at all residential and common areas are to be performed at minimum one (1) time every (4) four
weeks year around. None of the aforementioned areas will exceed (4) four weeks without pruning.
• Renewal pruning shall be performed annually during the dormant season. Removal of up to one-half (1/2) of the shrub may be required.
• Weeding services at all residential and common areas are to be performed at minimum one (1) time every (2) two weeks year around. None of the aforementioned areas will exceed (2) two weeks without weeding. The contractor is allowed to use a combination of chemical and hand pulling for weed removal.
• All trees in pedestrian walkways and common areas will have a clearance maintained at eight (8’) feet in height throughout the year. Trees along cart paths, entrances, roadways, and driveways will have a minimum clearance maintained at twelve (12’) feet in height year around.
• Palm tree pruning that is up to (16’) feet of the clear trunk will be trimmed and pruned of any dead fronds on the contractors’ routine monthly pruning cycle.
• Spanish ball moss shall be removed from all trees, and shrub plantings up to a height of six (6’) feet during the monthly pruning cycle.
Irrigation Services
• All irrigation zones shall be activated and inspected monthly, and the contractor will make any necessary adjustments for proper coverage or due to season changes.
• Any minor repairs shall be made at the time of inspection or if a work order was created or called in by a resident, will be completed within 72 hours.
• Emergency irrigation calls must be controlled within two (2) hours of the issuance of a work order or call.

SPEED ENFORCEMENT
The HOA, Security, and Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the residents who recently passed away.

Summer Series – Home Before Dark Day Trips: Tampa Area
Does the term “the mighty Wurlitzer” strike a nostalgic chord? The Tampa Theatre’s 1400-pipe Wurlitzer was originally built to accompany silent films. You can see it as part of a fascinating 90-minute backstage tour of what was once one of America’s most opulent movie palaces. Tours are offered twice a month, usually on a Tuesday and Saturday. The old theatre has a lot of stories to tell, including one about a stuffed peacock. Today, the Tampa Theatre is back to being an active part of the Florida arts scene, with a full program of live shows and popular movies. There’s on-street parking and the Poe Garage is three blocks away. Think about planning a group trip for ten or more and the theatre will conduct a private tour; contact Jill at jill@ tampatheatre.org. For more information, visit tampatheatre.org
Of course, you can’t visit Tampa without eating ... walk a block for a hand-crafted burger at Butters Burgers. How can you say no to a burger with pork belly? Or, go to Eddie & Sam’s for pizza made with New York water. For more information, visit buttersburgerstampa.com and eddieandsamspizza.com
The Tampa Museum of Art is just a few blocks from the theatre. It’s small enough to be manageable on a brief visit. The exhibitions are beautifully curated. Visit tampamuseum.org
It’s about a half-mile walk or 15 minute drive to the Riverwalk with entertainment, shops, and park areas. The Oxford Exchange, a distinctive complex with a bookstore, one of the most unique gift shops in Florida, and if you’re ready to eat again, try avocado toast or a fried chicken sandwich at the restaurant. And, oh yes, there’s also a champagne bar. Visit thetampariverwalk.com and oxfordexchange.com.
You can even have an early dinner – Fish and Chips at Four Green Fields at Curtis Hixon Park (be sure to take home some Irish soda bread or Penne alla Vodka at Bavaro’s) – and still be home before dark. Visit fourgreenfields.com and bavarospizza.com
There is so much more to see in Tampa; visittampabay.com has a complete list of things to do.

Drills and Training
BY BILL GROSS TEAM LEADER OF SOLIVITA CERT
Your Solivita CERT is always training to be ready to serve our community in case of a catastrophe. On April 10th, we held our big annual drill, with the scenario being “a tornado or hurricane has hit the Village,” and we performed search and rescue of all buildings in the Village. We had our medical center set up in the Ballroom to triage and accept “victims.” We had six “victims” total, with a variety of medical conditions. They were all triaged and treated accordingly. All levels of all the buildings were searched, and we want to thank the Evergreen staff for cooperating with our search and rescue teams.
In addition to the search and rescue teams, we had our Medical Center, medical supply area, and a variety of helpers. We also had our Communications Center set up and were communicating via radios as each search progressed. Our logistics team was prepared and issued all the necessary equipment, which included fire extinguishers, radios, toolbox, and our generators. The medical supply folks provided each team with a trauma bag as well. Following our drill, we enjoyed a nice lunch, provided by our auxiliary team.
All in all, the drill was a success, although as with any drill, there are areas we need to work on. Please know that your
Solivita CERT undergoes quite a bit of training. This includes our monthly training drills here in the Ballroom, as well as many opportunities during the year to go to Bartow for more intense training. CERT is trained in search and rescue, using a fire extinguisher, cribbing, stop the bleed, CPR, properly moving victims, ground search, and much more. So, when you see some of our folks out and about in their green CERT shirts, take a moment to thank them for their dedication to the community of Solivita.
You can do your part in preparing. Start NOW to accumulate items on the Disaster Supplies List, especially non-perishable foods and a backup supply of medications. Contact Polk County if you need special consideration during an evacuation if you have an oxygen generator, have a CPAP machine, or have medications needing refrigeration. They can connect you with a Special Needs Shelter. Also, if you have hurricane shutters that you need installed during the storm, contact a handyman today to get on their list to assist you. It’s never too early to prepare.
If you are interested in joining CERT, please contact our Membership Chair, Jan Gross, at 719-330-4768 or SolivitaFL.cert@gmail.com.

Jumping Into June
BY BRAD THOMPSON BRANCH MANAGER, FLORALAWN
The official beginning of summer launches our season of afternoon rains, hot temps, thick humidity, and grass that grows an inch while you’re taking an afternoon nap.
It also launches our 8-10-week community-wide chinch bug insecticide protocol.
It’s Chinch Bug Season
Chinch bugs are tiny pests that cause millions of dollars of damage every year to turf and pasture grass in the southern United States. They love St. Augustine grass and have gained notoriety as the second-most-expensive plant-feeding arthropod in Florida. They live around the roots and bases of St. Augustine grass during the winter, begin infestations in spring, and thrive during the summer.
At Floralawn, we’re very familiar with chinch bugs and the damage they cause. We bring this experience and knowledge to Solivita, where we use an effective systemic application, retreating where necessary, to eradicate and control these turf pests.
Summer Storm Prep
In addition to our summer chinch bug management program, in June our crews will continue to prepare the community for summer storms. This means inspecting all palms and trees close to structures. We trim these limbs back to reduce the possibility of damage during storms.
We always welcome the advent of rainy season since it means irrigation systems don’t have to work so hard. Summer rains will also increase the availability of the reclaimed water supply.
June Coffee Talk
This month’s Coffee Talk is on June 23rd at 9am in Mosaics. We meet for about an hour to give residents Floralawn updates and answer questions in person.
Chinch bugs feed on the bases of grass blades, draining the sap from the blades, and injecting a poison that makes the grass wither, turn brownish-yellow, and finally die. When they’ve killed one area of turf, they migrate to an adjacent area and feed there until those blades die as well.
What We Do About Chinch Bugs
While there are cultural controls for chinch bugs (proper mowing, fertilization, and irrigation), the most effective form of control is a chemical application. Still, chinch bugs have developed a resistance to these systemic insecticides, and applications usually must be repeated for complete eradication. Resistance to chemicals and repeated outbreaks make the chinch bug difficult and expensive to get rid of.
Can’t make it to the Coffee Talk? Call us at 863-225-9565. Or stop by our office in the Admin building in downtown Solivita. You may also email us at hello@floralawn.com.

TOPS IN SOLIVITA has some great five-year statistics. We’ve had over 140 different members, several who joined in 2018 still with us. We have lost over 1,000 pounds and graduated 16 members to date, with more very close (reached their goal weight and became KOPS.) We had our first chapter centennial in 2022 (lost 100+ pounds) and now being awarded the Century Medallion by the TOPS ORGANIZATION for maintaining the loss for 52 weeks.
Since we could not meet in person or do weigh-in during the pandemic, we continued to meet weekly via Zoom and do home tracking. We did not miss a single weekly meeting. Fundraising money was donated to a local food bank, and we provided a dinner to Poinciana Medical Center Security. Join TOPS IN SOLIVITA on June 20th and see if TOPS is right for you.
