It’s Summer Time, Get Your Flip Flops On! By Jana Malik Director of Activities
We are so fortunate to live in Florida, the land of glorious sunshine, that allows us to throw on our “summer” clothes and flip flops almost year-round! The third Friday in June is National Flip Flop Day and having been born and raised in South Florida, flip flops are a wardrobe staple for me. If you weren’t aware, I broke my left foot (and believe it or not, I had broken my right foot two years ago too!) and it has made me appreciate the little things like easily getting around, dancing and wearing both of my flip flops. I even miss the noise it makes. But, don’t feel sorry for me, just watch out by the end of this month when I am expected to be back standing on both feet, running around setting up, working the community events, bringing the fun and dancing with you all again!
Activities Events and Solivita University Letters of Credit If you have a letter of credit from an Activities event or a Solivita University class that was cancelled in 2020, please bring it to the Activities office to exchange for a check that will be mailed to you. Since we have moved to online ticket sales, the paper letter of credit cannot be applied to a future event and will instead be refunded.
Club Day and Overnight Trips If your club is planning on using the Freedom Park parking lot to go on a group Day or Overnight Trip, you MUST inform the Director of Activities by email. Please provide your club name, trip name, date(s), contact person, and their cell number to Jana Malik at jmalik@evergreen-LM.com. If your trip is going to be overnight, the trip organizer needs to also send one complete list by email of all cars make, tag number, owner name and owner cell number. The Freedom Park parking lot is a club facility that is used for a multitude of events, activities or it could be blocked out for maintenance needs. Therefore, this area MUST be requested in advance, and once approved, Security will also be informed.
4
NOTE: If you are requesting a temporary parking pass for this parking lot (outside of a club event), please stop by Solivita Membership in the Administration Building.
No Smoking in Event Areas Whether signage is posted or not, please refrain from smoking cigarettes, cigars, or e-cigarettes within event areas. You may go outside the event area to smoke and return back when done.
What is Being Planned for July 4th in Solivita? With the country and Solivita beginning to reopen more fully, it has been decided that we will be bringing back our ever popular Red, White and Blue Street Party. If you are new and haven’t attended before, this event is open to residents and their guests of all ages, but it is not open to the public.

Committee Roundup Solivita Lifestyles Activities Committee (SLAC)
It’s great to be back discussing events and brainstorming ideas and thoughts after a yearlong pause. Here’s what the committee has been talking about:
Community-Wide Parades After evaluating the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the committee noticed that the onlookers are comfortable and are returning to the Village Center to view the parade when an event follows in the Village Center. If most onlookers are in the Village Center, there will be less people watching the parade throughout the community, which may deter people from spending time to create a “golf cart float.”
Parades through the Village Center will also allow clubs or individuals who walk or dance in the parade to return. Community wide parades, with an online voting system for the onlookers to participate in, will be done if there is no event following it.
Village Drive Parade Route Change To allow a bigger parade staging area, the Village Center parades will now start from the Farmer’s Market area of the Freedom Park parking lot and will end in the Welcome Center Courtyard. Basically, a reverse of what is normally done.
Battle of the DJs A new concept event, held in April in the Freedom Park parking lot, was a welcomed change to the usual “DJ event.” The committee would like the DJs to “riff” each other more and announce their song on the mic to give a more “battle” feel. Also mentioned was to include a larger variety of music that would appeal to a broader group of residents.
Show Selection The committee was overjoyed to be given the opportunity to assist in selecting a show for 2022.
Thursday Night Movies A majority of residents have welcomed and prefer movies being broadcasted on Ch. 732 in the comfort of their home. This also opens up the Ballroom calendar to host additional events and therefore, the committee recommends continuing broadcast of Movie Nights on the Community TV Channel 732.
Club Expo New residents have inquired about a Club Expo for the Summer of 2021, but after discussion, the committee agreed the middle of the year is not the best time and they recommend hosting the expo in January 2022.
Solivita’s 21st Birthday Party Planning is underway, and the committee is helping with selecting the memorabilia merchandise that will go on sale to the community.

[ Solivita University] Course Description: Bridge players spend half of their time at the table defending the hand. This course will help that time spent learning: opening leads, second and third hand play and will include some work on signals. We will be using the book, Defense in the 21st Century which is included in the registration fee. Milestone Reached By Solivita CERT
On April 22nd, the Solivita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) trained its 3,000th resident in Check-CallCompress, the hands-only CPR and AED class designed to help neighbors who fall from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Rosa LaLonde, Public Education Manager, and Deputy Chief Kevin Shireman of Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR) attended the class to present a certificate to Solivita CERT and our Solivita Community recognizing that milestone.
The class was developed jointly with CERT and PCFR to address the issue of adult onset of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. This program was targeted at the retirement communities of Polk County, and guess what, many of them have community emergency response teams. Solivita CERT began offering the class here in 2011. We trained 38 residents that initial year. In Solivita, one individual in particular took on the task of organizing and presenting these classes to our residents. That individual is Michael Weitz. The classes are now presented
Reflections | June 2021
across the county with the real effect of raising the survival rate of SCA in Polk County to 11% versus the national average of 5%. The two-hour class consists of a presentation highlighting the need for this training (350,000 persons suffer SCA every year— that’s 1,000 each day). There is no warning; it is sudden, with victims doing any ordinary activity (not necessarily strenuous) one minute and collapsing the next. The class employs videos from the American Heart Association and a demonstration of the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) that can “restart” an arrested heart. Attendees are offered an opportunity to get hands-on with a manikin to practice chest compressions and practice using an AED. You can find over 74 AEDs in Solivita by downloading to your smartphone, the free app PulsePoint AED (yellow). With the Check-Call-Compress training, you could save the life of someone close to you who falls from SCA. In Solivita, we know of five occurrences with 100% survival due to residents employing this training. In those cases, the patient was revived before the arrival of the emergency medics. The class emphasizes the need for rapid reaction to a sudden collapse by checking for signs of life, calling 9-1-1 and promptly beginning chest compressions. You will learn how short the time interval is for a victim to begin receiving chest compressions. Do you know these life-saving skills? Do your friends? Thanks to the dedicated CERT staff of presenters and demonstrators, you can learn this in only two hours. Call Bryan Olson at 863-313-3765 or email him at crusher3@usfamily.net to register for an upcoming CHECK-CALL-COMPRESS class.

The R2R Resource Center is Here for You! Advisory Committee Our mission in the Resource Center is to connect Solivita residents with the wide number of resources that exist inside and outside of the community. Our Advisory Committee is continually working to find and improve what we do; through workshops that inform and entertain, links to help residents find the assistance they need, and information about the Solivita clubs and groups that enhance life here. We will share our progress ... and please let us know what we can do to improve your Solivita experience.
Meet Volunteers Char and Marge Char Fullerton Char worked 25 years in New York City as an Advertising Director for a financial services company. Then, she changed the direction of her life completely, moving to the Poconos Mountain area and substitute teaching special needs children for 10 years. She and her husband chose Solivita for the amenities, activities available, and all the opportunities to meet new people. It’s important for Char to give back to the community and has
been involved with outreach her entire adult life. She continues to volunteer in our local community as a mentor at New Dimensions High School, as an advocate for children at Guardian Ad Litem, and of course volunteering at the Resource Center.
Marge Iannuzzi Marge is a Jersey girl at heart and also lived 24 years in New Hampshire prior to moving to Solivita. She worked at her husband’s computer business and as a staff accountant at an insurance company prior to retiring. Marge and her husband fell in love with Solivita during Discovery Days and moved here seven years ago. Four Steps to a More Positive Mindset
Articles
By Rita Milios Psychotherapist and Holistic Wellness Coach, Riviera Spa Massage As we learn more about how the brain works, we come to realize that thinking is a habit. The way we talk to ourselves in our minds, the way we decide which thoughts to hold onto and which to let go of, the choices that we make, and how we create our belief systems – these all result from habits of thinking. Bad habits, such as negative self–messages and put–downs, tend to create bad results – low self-esteem, depression and lack of motivation. Good habits, such as talking to yourself in a positive way, focusing on positive thoughts, and being positive with other people, tend to create good results – success, happiness, and peace of mind. While no one is positive all the time, there are ways to gain a positive “mind set,” where positive thinking becomes a habit. Below are four simple steps you can take to gain a more positive mindset:
1) Eliminate Negative Self-Talk You probably don’t realize how many times a day you send yourself negative mental messages because the habit of negative self–talk goes unnoticed after a while. But studies show that most people hear between 300 and 400 negative messages per day – many of them in their own minds. Start today to monitor your inner dialogue. Note any negative mental comments like, “Well, that was stupid,” or “I knew I’d mess it up.” Recognize that such internal put-downs simply serve to reinforce a poor self–image and reduce your confidence in yourself. Begin today to consciously change such negative thoughts. Whenever you find yourself thinking a negative thought, STOP, no matter where you are in the thought process. Never complete a negative thought. Change it to a positive message before you finish the thought.
2) Give Yourself a Mirror Pep Rally Another way to create the habit of positive thinking is to give yourself a “mirror pep rally.” Each morning (or whenever you feel the need) look at yourself in the mirror and say: “I am a positive person. I look for and see only the positive in every situation. I

am thankful for the good that comes my way, and the lessons that I am allowed to learn.”
3) Don’t Worry Like thinking positively, worrying is a habit, too – a bad habit. Worry is a waste of time. It does nothing to change a situation. But not only is worry wasteful, it is destructive as well. It is self– defeating, dragging you into a chasm of imagined fears and doubts that serve to undermine your positive outlook. Would it not be better to put your worries out of your mind? To break the habit of worry? Here are some “tricks” to help you become worry–free: Maintain a worry–time schedule. Set aside one-half hour each day to do all your worrying. During this half hour worry to your heart’s content, playing out all the possibilities to their ultimate catastrophe. But at any other time during the day, you must not indulge in worrying. Gradually reduce your worry-time. Start with a half hour a day. After a week, cut it down to twenty minutes, then ten minutes. Then eliminate your worry-time altogether. Realize that your worrying did not help your situation in any way. All your concentrated worrying changed nothing. Therefore, your worries were wasted; you didn’t need them. You are free to let them go.
4) Use Your Imagination Create an imaginary “safe place” to contain your worries. One psychologist I know keeps three jars on his desktop. The first is labeled Doubts. The second is labeled Fears. The third is labeled Worries. Whenever he has a doubt, a fear, or a worry, he simply lifts the lid on the appropriate jar and “tosses” it inside. Very useful, those little jars! Use these simple strategies regularly and you will soon create for yourself the habit of positive thinking; and that will be a very good habit to have! Jumping Into June
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn The official beginning of summer launches our season of afternoon rains, hot temps, thick humidity, and grass that grows an inch while you’re taking an afternoon nap. It also launches our 8-10-week community-wide chinch bug insecticide protocol.
It’s Chinch Bug Season Chinch bugs are tiny pests that cause millions of dollars of damage every year to turf and pasture grass in the southern United States. They love St. Augustine grass, and have gained notoriety as the second most-expensive plant-feeding arthropod in Florida. They live around the roots and bases of St. Augustine grass during the winter, begin infestations in spring, and thrive during the summer.
usually must be repeated for complete eradication. Resistance to chemicals and repeated outbreaks make the chinch bug difficult and expensive to get rid of. At Floralawn, we’re very familiar with chinch bugs and the damage they cause. We bring this experience and knowledge to Solivita, where we use an effective systemic application, re-treating where necessary, to eradicate and control these turf pests.
Summer Storm Prep In addition to our summer chinch bug management program, in June our crews will continue to prepare the community for summer storms. This means inspecting all palms and trees close to structures. We trim these limbs back to reduce the possibility of damage during storms. We always welcome the advent of the rainy season since it means irrigation systems don’t have to work so hard. Summer rains will also increase the availability of the reclaimed water supply.
Monthly Coffee Talks are Back! June’s Coffee Talk is Friday, June 4th at 9am in the Starlite Ballroom. We are limited to 100 participants and masks are required during the event.
Chinch bugs feed on the bases of grass blades, draining the sap from the blades, and injecting a poison that makes the grass wither, turn brownish-yellow, and finally die. When they’ve killed one area of turf, they migrate to an adjacent area and feed there until those blades die as well.
What We Do About Chinch Bugs While there are cultural controls for chinch bugs (proper mowing, fertilization, and irrigation), the most effective form of control is a chemical application. Still, chinch bugs have developed a resistance to these systemic insecticides, and applications
