A Fiesta Packed Month!

[ Department] Articles

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge Can you believe we are almost halfway through the year? I guess time flies when you’re having fun in the sun! It’s just like looking at my child and thinking how much she has grown. One minute I was giving her a bottle and now she is nine years old. Just make sure that your time is spent wisely with people you love, so no matter how time flies at least you know it was well spent. Take some time this month to have some fun and be grateful for everything and everyone you have. In fact, there are some important holidays to celebrate this month and some interesting places to visit in the area with those you cherish. Check out my list below!

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo (on Friday, May 5th) is the Celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Happy Cinco de Mayo! Try out the tasty recipe below to get your party started! It has all of the flavors of Mexican style street corn in nacho form with grilled or charred corn, mayo, feta, cilantro, cayenne, and lime juice, along with the tortilla chips and a creamy melted Monterey Jack cheese sauce! Mexican Street Corn Nachos Prep Time: 10 minutes; Cook Time: 15 minutes; Servings: 8. Ingredients: • 2 tbsp butter • 4 cups corn, fresh, frozen • 2 tbsp mayonnaise • 1 tbsp cornstarch • 1 cup cream, half and half or milk • 8 oz Monterey Jack cheese, shredded

Reflections |  May 2017 |

• 1 (14 oz) bag tortilla chips • 1/4 cup cotija or feta, • • • •

crumbled 2 tbsp crema or sour cream 2 tbsp cilantro, chopped cayenne to taste 1 lime, cut into wedges

Directions: 1. Melt the butter in a heavy bottomed pan over medium high heat, add the corn, and let it sit until it starts to char a bit. Mix it up and let it start to char a bit again before removing from heat and mixing in the mayo. (Optional - add grilled corn from the cob instead!) 2. In another pan, mix the cornstarch into the cream, bring it just to a simmer, reduce the heat, and mix in the cheese until it melts. 3. Place the tortilla chips onto a serving dish, pour on the cheese sauce mixture, top with the corn, cotija, sour cream, cilantro, cayenne, and hit everything with a few squirts of lime juice! Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 14th is the day to celebrate and honor mothers everywhere, especially in our fabulous Solivita Community. Being a mother is a wonderful and selfless experience, as there is no love more powerful than the love a mother has for her child. A mother’s maternal instinct is to love, protect and do what’s necessary to provide and care for her children. Maybe it’s a blessing for mothers to have that love as it seems to make us strong even when we want to be weak. I am blessed to be able to put my daughter to bed every night and experience that love. That’s the best and only present I need to keep me going. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Solivita moms!

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 29th this year. Respecting and honoring the people who have died for our freedom is huge! So, let’s show our gratitude by remembering them on Memorial Day. The lives that were lost should never be forgotten; we live the way we do because of the men and women lost serving in the country’s armed forces. What a great federal holiday in the United States! We should all be proud and honored to live in a country with such brave soldiers willing to do anything to protect our wonderful country - the great USA. continued on page 4

Moving Into May

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn It has been a busy spring around Solivita as Floralawn crews have been hard at work tending to plants, trees and turf.

Weeding, Pruning & Planting

Early spring saw us digging into weed control protocols and completing scheduled fertilizer applications. We finished up the native grass pruning and rejuvenational pruning conducted on sparse and leggy plants.

A Complete Team

April also brought the hiring of new employees, bringing us to a complete team of seven maintenance crews and seven detail crews in Solivita. Being fully staffed with carefully vetted and thoroughly trained groundspeople empowers us as a company to give Solivita the best care possible. Does it seem like you’re seeing us around more these days? It’s because last month we moved to weekly mowing of your lawns and the turf around ponds. We added a third employee to take care of the detail areas around ponds (meaning obstacles such as poles, drain boxes, etc., that require targeted, manual care). The addition of just one extra person to that crew allows us to keep every pond trimmed and neat.

conducts a plant and sod audit, noting where stress or damage has occurred or grass and plants have died. Then we go through and systematically replace damaged or dead grass and plants. We carry out replacements according to triaged lists. As many as nine lists were completed in 2016. Floralawn team-members have completed the audit for plant and sod replacements for the second list of replacements and in May we’re starting the installations.

What’s Ahead in May?

This month we continue to remove Spanish and ball moss from all shrubs and trees across Solivita, up to six feet in height. May also has us looking ahead to June and the advent of the summer storm season. In preparation for that, we’re inspecting all palms and trees, particularly those close to homes and buildings. Where limbs and fronds are touching walls and roofs, Floralawn crews are trimming them back. Ensuring that trees and palms are not in contact with building surfaces keeps the possibility of damage to a minimum. That brings you up to date on our activities as we work every day to keep Solivita beautiful! If you have any questions, just give us a call at 863-225-9565.

Plant & Sod Replacement

We completed the first round of 2017 plant and sod replacements. Periodically, throughout any given calendar year, Floralawn

2017 CAR SHOW RECAP

[ Department] Articles

The best of everything!! Best weather, Best attendance, Best assortment of vehicles and the Best volunteers made this the Best Solivita Car Show yet!! And best of all, we raised $6,656!! This is $2,000 more than last year - for the Meals on Wheels charity - from car registrations, sponsors, raffles, People’s Choice voting cards, and Car Show T-shirt sales. Unlike last year’s rain that put a mild damper on the show, we had terrific weather this year. The vehicles started arriving at 5:30am, but the many volunteers were ready welcoming the 108 pre-registered vehicles and the 36 day-of-show registrations, directing them to have a picture taken and guiding vehicles to their parking spots. During the event, volunteers manned the Info Booths, the Car Show photo pick-up area, and the Raffle Tent while car show judges checked out all the cars. The red lipstick, poodle skirt Rockabilly girls smiled sweetly and took pictures with attendees and the Car Show winners. We saw a number of really cool vehicles like the ‘37 Chevy car hauler with the ‘23 T-Bucket riding on back and a number of really nice exotics, street rods, antiques, trucks and classics, but muscle cars still seem to rule the show. Two large Mustang clubs drove over an hour bringing twenty something vehicles along with the Corvette club adding a dozen more; they have supported the show for many years. Over sixty Solivita owners also shined up their vehicles along with the SOBs Motorcycle Club. The Solivita RV Club had a great showing with many visitors viewing their campers. This year’s Car Show had 39 awards including two high Sponsor Choice Awards: Cadwell Wealth Management Group and Ship and Shore Group Tours. Also included was a special tribute, from the 2017 Car Show Committee,

called the Butch Cicatko Award. Butch was Solivita’s Car Show Founding Father, so the award winner was chosen by his wife Becky Cicatko and best friend, Mac McCarty. The end of show parade of all the car show participants down Village Drive went off with a VROOM, VROOM including some loud cheers given to the award winners who showed off their plaques to the attendees watching. The show would not have been a success without the help of Food & Beverage, Security, Maintenance, Housekeeping, the judges, the volunteers, photographer Joe Thomas, the Car Show Committee, and the entire Lifestyles Activities staff. THANK YOU to everyone who attended! If you missed the show, you may view all of the photos that Joe Thomas took during the day including the award winners and parade at SolivitaHOA. com. It is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. Meet Ove, he’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” Next Lecture: June 26th - Animal Farm by George Orwell. THE US CONSTITUTION: THEN AND NOW Thursdays, June 15th, 22nd and 29th • 10am • The Palms Tuition: $20 per resident student and their adult guests welcome Presenter: Thomas Gallagher, a Solivita resident who has taught both literature and law during his career. He currently teaches government at Valencia College. Course Description: In 1776 the Founding Fathers created our Constitution based on their experiences and dreams for our Country. This course will examine the intentions and concerns of the authors against the interpretation of the 21st Century. We will consider why the Bill of Rights was written and examine some of the most currently discussed amendments. The content covered will be governed by the amount of time allotted to the Course.

SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Here are some quick facts on speeding: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when going at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash

once it occurs. Check out the slide on the Community Channel to see the latest stats from the Sheriff’s Office.
