SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Here are Some Quick Facts on Speeding: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs. Speed is a choice over which the driver has complete control.

Have a Laugh
And now, since it has been a while, I want to share a joke with you that Dave Daubert, a Solivita resident, sent to me. Don’t worry, my Mom approved it!!! The conductor had already tried unsuccessfully to intervene when the bus driver shouted to the conductor, “Let the ugly one take the seat!” Both women stood for the rest of the journey.
LPR System & Transponders By Vickie Kellogg Membership Coordinator
Transponders have been turned off effective Wednesday, May 1st. The goal with the LPR system from the beginning was to eliminate the transponders and tighten up security, as transponders are mobile and can be passed around. We have spoken to everyone on our “trouble list,” which is about 60 cars, motorcycles, etc., that we continue to work with the engineer on. Some of those on the trouble list have not gotten back to me with current history of gate, date, and time when the LPR system has failed and/or worked. In order to issue a transponder with “special access” to allow entry through the Main Gate, Venezia and Bella Viana Gates, we need to review the history. Once we have identified that the LPR system will not work, Membership will re-activate or replace the transponder for that vehicle. We are continuing to work with the engineers to eliminate issues and upgrade the software and firmware regularly. Please visit Membership with your transponder and list of trouble dates so that we can assign one specific transponder per vehicle having issues. You will have access with your transponder at the Main Gate, Venezia and Bella Viana only. We realize this is still inconvenient and frankly annoying for those of you that still have trouble using the LPR. There are a few instances that may not be able to be rectified. On Disabled Vet plates, the red shows as light gray and has a hard time generating hits. Also, some motorcycles will always have an issue. If you have not registered your car with Membership for the LPR system, please do so. If you are having an issue, please contact membership at 863-427-7143 or email SolivitaMembership@Evergreen-LM.com. Please turn in your transponders at the Concierge Desk in the Administration Building or at The Palms.
Argument done!

Solivita Gated Community Overview By Madalyn Colon Site Supervisor, Vital Security & Investigations
As a team, through classroom training, workshops, situational training, etc., we are working toward providing excellent customer service. As a gated community, our security team (gate attendants) handles every security procedure at the entry gate. Our security staff strives to get to know everyone in Solivita with the goal that we have a personal relationship with people who live in this community. This connection helps us provide better security and make everyone feel safer.
most appropriate vehicles to get around the community. Whether we have officers in a vehicle or golf cart, or on a bike, there is always staff in places where they can easily get to the people in the community. Mobile patrol will also be looking to implement Radar patrols to identify any vehicles that are speeding throughout the community. Patrol will not be issuing citations; instead they will be holding up a friendly residential sign that says, “Please Slow Down” for any violators. We also work closely with the Sheriff’s Office to coordinate off-duty patrols.
When visitors arrive at the gates, we check a visitor’s log database that the homeowners in the community add guests to. When people are not on the list, we contact the resident whom the visitor is going to see before they are let into the community. We strive to be professional and cordial, but we take every precaution to ensure the neighborhood is safe. In other words, we do not let in anyone who is not supposed to be here in Solivita.
It is important to note that the officers are gate attendants. They are not armed and have no jurisdiction. Their primary job, in most situations, outside the gate houses is to observe and report. Please call 9-1-1 or the Sheriff’s Office for emergencies, first and foremost.
Residential Guard Patrols
Our patrol officers also drive around the community and walk the streets (Village) to make sure that everyone is safe and secure. We keep our eyes open for suspicious behavior, but we also make sure that cars\golf carts are not broken down or parked incorrectly.
Neighborhood Emergencies
When there are emergencies within the community, we work with the local authorities and provide information to the those that are sending help. We are committed to the safety of all the people in the community; however, we are not law enforcement officers. In the event there is an actual crime occurring, we serve as a liaison with the local law enforcement and in a supportive role allowing them to do their job effectively. We can also coordinate with local authorities to help them get to the correct house in a fair amount of time. We also always keep a lane open for emergency vehicles to get in and out of the community.
Moving Forward
Vital Security is committed to enhancing the service delivery in Solivita. This year we have worked with Evergreen Lifestyles Management in hiring a new Safety and Security Director to oversee the special needs of Solivita. We are also looking to be more intentional about educating the homeowners to aid in keeping the residents as safe as possible. Moreover, we use the

Did You Know....
Our first shift supervisor, Mr. Roger Fisher, II, is a former Polk County Deputy Sheriff of 7 1/2 years before moving to the private sector of security. He has worked for the Security Team since March of 2014. He was a gate officer for four months before promotions to the second and third shift supervisor, and then becoming the full time third shift supervisor. I would like Roger Fisher to thank Mr. Fisher for acting as a liaison from the previous management team and helping to implement the new management expectations. As the Director of Safety and Security, I felt welcomed and respected as the new leader of the team by Mr. Fisher. He has taken the initiative to ensure the team lives up to Vital Security & Investigations’ expectations of “World Class Customer Service.” If you happen to see this Shift Supervisor, please thank him for his dedication to Solivita’s overall safety. Perspectives
By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge There are certain things we should never take for granted. We all have people in our lives who have greatly impacted us in one way or another and we classify these people as special. It’s great to be mindful of some very important dates that are set aside to remember and honor these special people. This month is, in itself, a special month because of the importance of those who will be honored - mothers and veterans. Instead of taking the lovely area we live in for granted, how about we bring some of those special people in our lives to one of the events going on in the area? Check out this month’s holidays and selection of events and activities.
Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo - Sunday, May 5th - is the Celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This is a great day to have some good Mexican food. My personal favorite place to go is El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant located at 1804 W. Vine Street in Kissimmee. Their phone number is 407-572-8500 and they are open 11am-10pm, Sunday-Thursday and 11am-11pm on Friday and Saturday. Old Town is having a Cinco de Mayo Festival from 12pm-10pm on May 5th, located at 5770 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy on 192 in Kissimmee. FREE admission and parking! This festival will be outdoors, and you will be able to purchase authentic Mexican food, beer, wine, tequila shots, margaritas, sangria, piña coladas and enjoy live entertainment. Please call 407-579-8172 or visit www.ZammyPromotions.com for more information.
Mother’s Day
This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 12th. We all grow up, but we should never be too old to make the mothers in our lives feel special on Mother’s Day!
Megacon
Megacon is Thursday, May 16th, 4pm-9pm; Friday and Saturday, May 17th and 18th, 10am-7pm; and Sunday, May 19th, 10am5pm. You can expect to see the cast of Back to the Future, Wonder Woman, Doctor Who, Hellboy, iZombi, Baywatch, and too many others to mention! If you are into comics, sci-fi, cosplay or gaming, you won’t want to miss Megacon. The cost is $20 for adults. Please visit megaconvention.com for more information. The event is at the Orange County Convention Center, 9800 International Drive.

Memorial Day
Memorial Day, on Monday, May 27th, is a day to honor and appreciate the brave men and women who gave their lives to protect America through military service. I know I feel protected and blessed to live in this country, and I am very thankful to everyone who lost their lives to make this nation safe.
Solomon’s Castle
Are you looking for something different to do? If so, a tour through Solomon’s Castle might be just the thing you are looking for. Come view life through Howard Solomon’s eyes - the sculptor, painter and author who built Solomon’s Castle. Visit solomonscastle.com to see if this unique castle with its stained-glass windows and metal sculptures interests you. If you get hungry, they have The Boat-inthe Moat restaurant with reasonable prices. The castle is located at 4533 Solomon Road, Ona, FL 33865. They are open TuesdaySunday from 10am-4pm and closed on Mondays. The cost is $16$24 depending on age and tour selection. For more information, contact alansolomon@yahoo.com or 863-494-6077.
Wild Florida Wildlife & Nature Park
Do you enjoy animals, airboat rides and the outdoors? If so, you will love this wild adventure park. Wild Florida also has a small restaurant and a specialty swamp slushy drink that is so delicious. Visit wildfloridairboats.com or call 407-957-3135 for more information. Several discounts are available on their website for groups, Florida residents, seniors, AAA members, military and more. The park is located at 3301 Lake Cypress Road, Kenansville, FL 34759. Hours are Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm and closed on Sundays. We’ve all taken things for granted at some point - life, objects, people, jobs and the way we live. Many of these things come at the expense and sacrifice of other people. I would like to say that I have learned my lesson, but the truth is, as the days go by, we can all be guilty of complacency especially when we live such a wonderful way of life and all is well. I can honestly thank and show respect to everyone who has in any way given me a better way of life. In the spirit of not taking things for granted, I would like to thank the residents, my boss and coworkers who all make my job at Solivita so great! The Resource Center is Here for You! CERT Medical Equipment
Solivita residents can donate new and used medical equipment in good condition to CERT. The equipment is then loaned to Solivita residents who are in need of such equipment. CERT accepts walkers, canes, wheelchairs, shower chairs, toilet chairs/ seats and knee scooters. The equipment can be dropped off in the Resident 2 Resident (R2R) office, above the Marketplace Bistro, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12pm-5pm.
Thank You Carolyn!
The volunteers at the Resource Center are so grateful to have had the help of Carolyn Roe since our “beginnings” in March 2017. Her willingness to listen to our ideas and to help us make plans for workshops, to make additions to SolivitaHOA.com, and especially to help us communicate with Solivita residents and volunteers, allowed R2R to grow and serve. All of our volunteers thank you, Carolyn. We hope that your retirement is filled with happiness and joy!
Children’s Books
If you’d like to encourage visiting grandchildren away from their electronic devices, introduce them to a book! The Resource Center maintains a supply of children’s books that are available for any Solivita resident to borrow. We have all kinds of books from Dr. Seuss and Little House on the Prairie to The Wind in the
Willows and picture books; you can find something to entertain young visitors.
Upcoming Workshops
See the following for two upcoming May workshops and mark your calendars! All R2R workshops are free of charge, but please register in advance by contacting the Resource Center weekdays between 9am-5pm at 863-236-9973 or email SolivitaR2R@ gmail.com for additional details and to reserve your spot.
The Retirement Puzzle Workshop
Tuesday, May 14th • 10am • Starlite Ballroom This workshop will explore the ways in which retirement can affect our lives in so many ways, from having too much time on our hands, to losing a sense of identity. It can truly be a time for enjoying all the things we never had time for, but it can also leave us wondering what’s ahead. Presenters will focus not only on why we feel the way we do, but also on activities and resources to help cope with the “retirement blues.”
Hurricane Preparedness
Thursday, May 16th • 10am • The Palms The Solivita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will present a workshop on preparing for the upcoming hurricane season. The information and tips they will share are important not only for full-time residents, but also for “snowbirds” who need to know how to safeguard their property during hurricane season when they may not be here. May Momentum
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Floralawn crews are picking up momentum as we move toward summer and the full-fledged growing season. We’re already well into the weekly mowing schedule and our various spring activities around Solivita.
out 14 work teams—seven maintenance crews and seven detail crews. These are the men and women who care for all residential properties, all common areas, and extra places like ponds and maintenance and admin areas. (Yes, it takes that many teams to keep Solivita looking great!)
Pruning
Prepping for Storms
You probably noticed Floralawn team members systematically pruning all the crepe myrtle trees throughout Solivita during the months of January, February and March. This takes weeks because of the number of crepes in the community. That task is complete, and the crepes are already putting out new growth. We also finished pruning the native grasses and the sparse and leggy plants in residential and common area beds.
Planting and Fertilizing
We completed spring fertilizer applications and the first of the year’s plant and sod replacement lists. (We regularly audit plants and turf in Solivita, noting where damage has occurred or where plants are dead or failing. These are recorded on a series of replacement lists which we work through over the course of the year.) This task has begun and we are full steam ahead replanting sod, trees and plants throughout Solivita.
Hurricane season begins on June 1st, so we are getting prepared for these weather events that can bring down trees or make weak branches into projectiles. We’re inspecting palms and oaks and any trees that are touching homes and buildings, trimming back branches and fronds. As well, we’re thinning out dense canopies to allow wind to pass through more easily.

He currently teaches at Valencia College. Class Description: A Cleveland mobster named “Shondor Jack’’ has his throat cut in the Red Room. How did the victim get in? What he was doing there? Who in the presidential mansion would want him dead? These are just some of the intriguing questions posed by this witty, entertaining and urbane tale. The solution to the mystery is a trifle predictable, but sophisticated dialogue and plenty of affectionate insights about the author’s parents and their era make this a delightful romp through the seamy side of officialdom. [ Solivita University] Statewide Parade Committee and the Latina Women’s Council of Mercer County, NJ. Born in Puerto Rico, she was raised in New York’s Spanish Harlem and has a degree in Education from New York University and a Certificate in Digital Filmmaking from SUNY Westchester Community College.
Course Description: The Borinqueneers chronicles the neverbefore told story of the Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment, the only all-Hispanic unit in U.S. Army history. Through compelling interviews and rare archival footage, this film explores the unique experience of the 65th, culminating in the Korean War and the dramatic events that would threaten its very existence. Bound by a strong cultural identity, the men of the 65th were determined to prove their mettle, in spite of discrimination within the Army. Having performed with distinction early in the Korean War, the Borinqueneers of the 65th would face their greatest challenge in the fall of 1952, when more than 100 soldiers were arrested. Nine years in the making, this award-winning film was aired nationally on PBS, the Pentagon Channel and on the Armed Forces Network. Screenings have taken place throughout the U.S. at film festivals, community organizations, universities and in military installations. There will be an archival photo display and a question-and-answer session following the film.

Committee Roundup Solivita Lifestyles Activities Committee (SLAC)
We’re happy to say that the new Yard Sale Purchasing Process at the March Main Ticket Sales was a success. For a small recap, residents who were only buying Yard Sale tickets received a different color deli ticket number than people who were buying other Activities Event tickets. We went back and forth calling the different deli ticket numbers, so people who only wanted Yard Sale Tickets did not have to wait very long to be called. Everything went very smoothly without any hiccups, and we got everyone in and out. We even had plenty of Yard Sale spots left over to sell! SLAC discussed a suggestion made by a resident on rotating all Club Posters that are hung in the Ballroom and Riviera Spa & Fitness Center two to three times a year. The posters will be randomly placed, therefore giving each club equal opportunity to get exposure from different groups of residents. For example, residents that frequent the Riviera Spa walking track every day, but don’t quite visit the Ballroom as often will be able to see new club posters and vice versa. If you enjoyed the Silent Disco Dance, or weren’t able to make it, we have another event idea that is very similar - a Battle of the Decades dance! We will split the Ballroom into three sections and each area will play all genres of music from a specific decade and will be decorated to match. Ballroom A will be 50’s and 60’s music, Ballroom B will be 80’s and 90’s, and Ballroom C, the biggest section with the dance floor, will be 70’s music! Tickets will include access for all the rooms, and partygoers will be able to move from each decade whenever they would like throughout the night. Which dance floor will we find you on? Mark August 2nd down in your calendar. For Easter 2020, we discussed having the Easter Egg Hunt done a little differently. We are thinking about using the softball field grassy section in order for a helicopter to drop 4,000 eggs from the sky! Everyone would stand around the softball field fence perimeter and watch the eggs be dropped and then when it’s done, make a run for the egg collecting. This would give the egg hunt a lot more exciting anticipation and a bigger area for more fun. We’d make sure to block off the orange clay area with the softball bases and use the side entrance covered in old Solivita mats, so the little ones are only on the grass during the hunt. We

are thinking about keeping the area by the pavilions to have an egg hunt for the little, little ones. To give feedback, suggestions, ideas or comments on any Lifestyles event, we’d love to hear from you by emailing us at LifestylesAdvisoryCommittee@SolivitaHOA.com.

Fitness, Wellness & Recreation Committee
After a lengthy discussion on the pros and cons of the SUNDAY FUNDAY event, it was decided to look into several options to make the event more enjoyable for all. A new self defense class began in April. The Solivita Club is considering upgrading to new water fountains at The Palms and the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center. These fountains are being considered for sanitary and safety reasons. Many residents have asked about selling water bottles and towels at the work out area. Jamar, the Director of Fitness & Wellness will consider this suggestion. Questions were answered concerning the pool upkeep. Jamar stated that the pools are attended to each day by a certified pool operator and are checked for pH and chlorine levels. The Wellness Committee and Personal Trainer’s brochures are available at the sign in desk at The Palms and Riviera (or available upon request). Class descriptions can be found on SolivitaHOA. com and available upon request. One thing to note is that the classes are now listed by intensity levels. Contact the committee at WellnessCommittee@SolivitaHOA. com with suggestions or comments.

Emotional Intelligence in Everyday Life
Food Supplies for Hurricane Season
Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
May is the perfect time to prepare for this year’s Hurricane Season (June 1st through December 1st). Solivita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) recommends that you start now to put together a supply of food for at least three days without power or access to stores. If you put aside food last year, please check expiration dates.
Start With These Items (A Few Each Week):
• Canned and jarred meats, soups, stews, chili, canned fruits and vegetables (and a manual can opener). Without electricity you can heat foods or water on your gas grill or Sterno warmer/server. • Non-perishable (dry) foods – cereal, crackers, etc.; unsalted nuts; jelly and honey; and peanut butter • Instant coffee, tea and cocoa; powdered drink mixes; fruit juices, vegetable juices, and diet soda • Pet food
Make sure these are things you will really eat because you may have no other choices.
Then as a Storm Threatens (48 Hours Out), Add These Things:

It’s a Skill
The capacity to be aware of, control, and express your emotions along with other people socially. It is important to be able to recognize your own emotions and be able to discern the different feelings of other people. To better enhance your relationships and for personal growth, we want to be mindful of how to label those feelings and respond accordingly.
What are the Components?
The skills that make up emotional intelligence can be learned by managing these categories: self-awareness, empathy, motivation, self-regulation, and social skills. There are plenty of articles and books written on this subject and I always advise you to do you own research. It is necessary to be reminded of things like this from time to time. Running across this information again definitely gave me a gut check.
Great Thing Is...
We can improve it. Once we get to that space of selfevaluation and understanding what that is telling us, we can then see how our emotions are affecting other people. I read some place that it also involves your perception of others. Once you understand how they feel, this will allow you to manage your relationships more effectively. • Fresh fruit (apples, oranges, bananas) and dried fruit (raisins and tropical mixes) • Cheese that doesn’t need refrigeration • Bread, muffins, bagels, and cookies • Bottled water (a gallon per day, per person) • Ice (you can always make your own cubes ahead)
For more info on stocking a disaster kit, ask the concierge for our handout or visit “CERT” on SolivitaHOA.com under Clubs and look under documents for “Hurricane Supplies.” To learn more about Hurricane Season, attend the Workshop coming up on May 16th at The Palms at 10am.
