Improvements & Project Recap By Sheri Wollschlager Club Manager

This last month, all of us have been through a lot and it has been a very trying time for everyone. I am very happy and proud to say that the Evergreen Lifestyles Management Team (ELM) has come together to complete a lot of projects in the last five weeks, thanks to Taylor Morrison for giving us permission to move projects up that were scheduled in the summer months.

• Removed an oak tree on Village Drive and replaced sidewalks that are lifting from tree roots in front of the Bistro and Mosaics. Installed a new tabebuia tree. • Started the renovations on The Palms ballroom and lobby. We have removed the dividing wall, allowing more room space for use.

Completed Projects

• New sound boards in the Ballroom is completed. • We are moving nicely through replacing A/C units that were installed in 1999 and are not operating efficiently anymore. This project was completed in April with the install of three A/C units on the Ballroom roof. • The Riviera Spa & Fitness Center (RSF) outdoor pool, spas, fountains and pool deck were completed.

• All frontline staff went through CPR training to update their certifications. • Installed new floors in the Venezia and Bella Viana Amenity Centers. • Installed new flooring in the lobby of RSF and the second floor hallway along with new baseboards. • Installed cameras in RSF. • Installed new drainage in the dog park and started laying new sod and Bermuda seeds. • Repainted the Mediterranean Skyline Rooms. • Re-surfaced the Billiard Gallery tables. • Phase 1 and 2 completed of the project to pressure wash all of the Village Drive pavers and sidewalks. • Repaired and painted the Ballroom storage room. • Repainted the pickleball wall at Freedom Park. • Started the yearly service of the softball field.

|4|

Projects We Plan to Complete in May or the Near Future:

• Repaint The Palms lobby, ballroom, computer room and Fitness Center. • Re-carpet The Palms ballroom and computer room. • New window treatments for The Palms lobby and ballroom. • New window treatments for Mediterranean Skyline Rooms. • Some new furniture for The Palms lobby. • Repaint inside and outside of Venezia and Bella Viana. • Install cameras at The Palms. • Reupholster the Mediterranean Skyline, The Palms, Venezia and Bella Viana chairs. • Purchased new card tables and lobby furniture for Venezia and Bella Viana. • Install new countertops in Venezia and Bella Viana restrooms. • Install new light fixtures at The Palms, Venezia and Bella Viana. • Install ceiling fans in The Palms ballroom with light fixtures. • Phase 3 of the project to pressure wash all of the Village Drive pavers and sidewalks.

The ELM Team can’t wait to open the facilities back up so everyone can see all the work that has been done to the Club facilities. From the ELM family to you, be safe and healthy. Sheri Wollschlager 863-427-7129 swollschlager@evergreen-LM.com

A New “Normal”

By Jana Malik Director of Activities It’s March 31st, and as I write this month’s article, I realize just how much has changed in a few short weeks. We are all getting used to a new “normal,” which is especially difficult for this very active and socially connected community. During this time, we can all agree that we have seen the best in many people as they reach out to help the sick and less fortunate. Our healthcare workers and first responders have gone above and beyond, risking their health to care for the sick day after day, often with little sleep. Local grocery stores are stocking shelves all night so that you and I can get the supplies we need. I am grateful for them and appreciate their sacrifice. One thing that I can say with certainty is that one day, hopefully sooner than later, we will meet and gather and party again!

Movie Nights

The first thing we implemented as an activity from our department during social distancing was Thursday Movie Nights on Channel 732. We had no idea how something so simple was going to make such a big impact to the community. That brought so much joy to us to do for all of you. Brandon Payne, our Activities Audio/Visual Specialist, worked diligently trying different adapters and plugs from the Spectrum cable line to the computer terminal DVD player. He was determined to make it work and bring movie nights to your home. Since then, we added Monday Matinee Movies at 3pm on Channel 732. Movie titles and more information is being sent through the community email blast. As a reminder, you can only view Channel 732 from the TV connected to the digital cable box and if your movie volume on your TV is low, raise the volume through your CABLE remote controller.

Movie Selection Process

This month I wanted to explain about our Movie Selection Process, because I am often asked why or how we choose each movie. Now seems like a good time to explain it to everyone. Every month the Activities Team does the following:

2. We review AARP.org’s “Movies for Grownups.” This

website is an excellent resource, as most of these movies are widely received. 3. We review the “DVD Releases by Month” through

Videoeta.com and then we print the most popular ones from the IMDB.com website. Then we file them by their release date. 4. We select a variety of movies that will be released a month

before we advertise the day of showing it. Then, we review these movies’ ratings on Rottentomatoes.com and then narrow them down. 5. Then, when we are ready to choose the movies for the

month we are going to publish in Reflections, we pick the ones with the best ratings within a mix of different movie genres, to try to please the majority. (Inside Note: Not everyone enjoys watching a Romantic Comedy every week like myself, so we mix the genres up.)

Movie Selection FAQs

The most frequent questions we receive are: • Do you watch every movie before showing it? The answer

is no. On our own time we’ve watched some, but not all of them. Due to the short time frame we have when new DVDs are released and our advance Reflections newsletter publication deadline, this is not always possible. However, we check online movie reviews and sometimes we ask residents who regularly watch movies in theaters their thoughts. • Why don’t we always show “good” movies? I take this

question as so: with the amount of new DVD movies that are released monthly, there might be 3-4 movies of mid to high review ratings, therefore the pickings of movies is always slim when we need around 3-5 per month to show. In addition, one person’s perception of a movie can be perceived differently by another.

1. We review the “New in Theater” movie releases and we jot

down the most popular ones.

originally scheduled show on April 3rd, ticket holders will need to exchange tickets for the new show date, starting on the September 1st Main Ticket Sales Day.

case, all movies shown would be PG Disney movies. It seems that most movies nowadays will have some level of language in it. A few years ago, we added disclaimers to warn those who want to refrain watching these kinds of movies.

Updates on Activities Events – Mark Your Calendars

*Reminder, ticket holders of any postponed events or classes must hold on to their tickets in order to receive a letter of credit good for a future Activities event or Solivita University class when our office fully reopens. • The 2020 Solivita Car Show has been rescheduled to Saturday, August 29th. If you had already registered your car, you don’t need to do anything else. We will be accepting additional participants as well. • The Vocal Trash Show is postponed until further notice as we wait to hear from the entertainment agency. This show was scheduled on a tour; therefore, it will involve rescheduling with many other venues.

• All Solivita University courses that were cancelled, have already been rescheduled to later this year or to Spring 2021. Read more information in the Reflections newsletter under the Solivita University section in the coming months.

Weekly Activity Competitions

To implement some sort of community Activities “events,” we have implemented a Weekly Activity Competition through the community email blast. Each week is 1-2 different competitions limited to a household. Winners will be announced, their submissions will be shown in the following week’s email blast and they will receive a $15 gift card to The Grille at Stonegate. If you have not logged into SolivitaHOA.com, do so now and say “YES” to receive community email blasts. Whether we are inside our homes or not, Keep the Party Going!!!

Rediscovering the Beauty of Solivita’s Ponds, Vol. 2 Article & Photos By Gene Burch, Vice President of Solivita Fishing Club We are very fortunate to have such a beautiful community here in Solivita. I think from the moment you enter the front gate, to see the town center sitting behind that gorgeous lake, it brings a lasting smile to our faces. Solivita has about a hundred of these ponds scattered throughout our community, both large and small. The Solivita Fishing Club wrote the first cover article on “Fishing For Trash” in April of 2015. A LOT has changed since that time. We have grown!!! Not only in new homes and neighborhoods, but also the number of ponds. With that growth comes more issues for the ponds - DEBRIS. The main reason for the debris is the wind. Not only do we find building materials from the new construction areas in the ponds next to them, a lot of debris is collected from all of the other ponds. Fishing For Trash was started when a bird next to a pond was seen with a nylon rope tangled in its beak (see photo to the right). For a couple of days the bird tried to free itself. On the third day the bird was not to be seen, not sure if it ever managed to

|8|

get the rope off. With that bird in mind, the Fishing Club started collecting this trash and we named it Fishing For Trash. Since this program was started back in 2012, the club has collected well over a ton of plastic bags, metal, food wrappers, Styrofoam, building debris and a myriad of other items. Our current project leader, Bob Tecau, identifies the ponds most needing attention and delegates to our members these selected ponds to clean. Recent events broke records with the number of members and amount of debris collected in about an hour and a half (see main photo above). Continued on page 9

Reflections |  May 2020 |

[ Department] Articles

Fishing For Trash article continued from page 8 Here are a few amazing statistics on the length of time needed to decompose this debris: • Aluminum/Tin Cans: 80-200 years • Cardboard/Paper: within 3 months • Plastic Bottles: 70-450 years • Plastic Bags: 500-1000 years • Glass Bottles: 1 MILLION years! • Even a banana peel takes 3 weeks

Ladies enjoying the cleanup!

• Be careful to not walk at the very edge of the pond, as it can be very slippery and this is where snakes and alligators like to hang out. • Use a long handled rake or other instrument to collect debris - NEVER reach down with your hands.

The Fishing Club is often asked by our neighbors, “How can we help with cleaning the ponds?” We do NOT encourage homeowners to do this.

Our club motto is “Having Fun ... Catching Fish ... and Sharing with Others.” Fishing For Trash is one way our club is “Sharing with Others” and yes we do “Have Fun” doing this even though we are “Catching Trash,” not fish.

The Fishing Club takes the following precautions: • Always go with someone, not alone. • Wear protective clothing, boots, hats and rubber gloves.

For more information about the Solivita Fishing Club or the Fishing For Trash program, please contact Mark Kroger at 734306-5966 or markkrog@yahoo.com.

From the World of Fitness & Wellness By Jamar Edge Director of Fitness & Wellness

Greetings all. We’ve had a challenging past couple of months and I hope that you all have been staying safe. I know it has been an added challenge to keep up with your fitness and wellness norms as well. Please do not let that discourage you from working out at home or finding other ways to be active.

Yard of the Month The Solivita Yard of the Month is located in the Courtyards of Montelena. Longtime Solivita residents Marcia and Marvin Rodgers have been beautifying their yards for years. The Rodgers’ most recent home at 2819 Palm Tree Drive is another example of how a little gardening can enhance a small plot into a contender for Yard of the Month. Since many of us are self-isolating due to the pandemic, may I suggest a little gardening to make Solivita a more beautiful place. Springtime is the perfect time to spruce up the yard. Will you be the next winner chosen?

Over the past month, the FitWell Team has been sending out videos and live workout streams to ensure we are doing all we can to keep you fit at home. I want to thank all of you who shared your words of thanks, as the instructors worked hard to make sure they were taking care of our Solivita homeowners.

Staying Active at Home

Here are a few things you can do to maintain your physical health while at home: • Turn on some music and dance. • If you’re sitting down watching some of your favorite shows, do a few chair squats during the commercials. • When you’re in the kitchen do a few calf raises while preparing meals. • Work outside in the yard. • For dog owners, take a longer route when walking your dog. Once we are back to normal operations, I’m sure many of you will want to know where your current fitness level may stand. Be sure to use the knowledge of your FitWell Personal Trainers for a FREE assessment. This will be a great opportunity to get back on track. I’ll leave you with a quote by the great John Wooden: “Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out.” Stay Safe Solivita!

Hurricane Season Is Coming—Are You Ready? Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

Forecasters are predicting a more active season for 2020—more storms, more hurricanes, and more major hurricanes. It officially begins June 1st. Now is the time for you to get ready.

You Need a Plan

Go or stay? Polk County officials recommend sheltering in place in our concrete block homes in Solivita. Maybe you don’t stay alone and get together with someone else for company. Maybe you head up north out of range. If you go, leave a friend or neighbor in charge of your home with a key. Make these decisions now.

You Need to Prepare

Build up or revisit your DISASTER KIT. Include some hand tools, duct tape, trash bags, rope, and of course, a flashlight for every household member (plus extra batteries). Check your batteryoperated items to be sure the batteries haven’t leaked due to the weather here.

You Need Food Supplies

Stock up for at least a three-day power outage. Include a gallon of water a day per person for drinking. Save enough water for two weeks—in jugs you buy or refill from other uses. You’ll need more for washing and toilet flushing (that could be stored in your bathtub). STOCK FOODS YOU WILL EAT. Be sure to have a manual can opener. You may not be able to go to a store for supplies after the storm. NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE!!!

Reflections |  May 2020 |

You Need to Monitor Severe Weather Predictions

Via TV, cell app or other. An outstanding way when the power goes out, is to have a WEATHER RADIO that is powered normally, but has battery backup. Set its S.A.M.E. codes (county) to 12097 (Osceola) and 12105 (Polk). This is an allhazard warning source (tornados, thunderstorms, hail, etc.).

As the Storm Approaches

Police your yard, bringing in objects that could become missiles. They can impact not only your house, but a neighbors’ as well. Bring your patio furniture inside or rope it together. Even objects as big as gas grilles have been known to blow around. Put up any storm shutters before winds build up. (Note: these have to come down 72 hours after the storm passes.) More details are available at SolivitaHOA.com > Get Connected > Clubs > CERT > Documents (at bottom of the page) • Disaster Considerations (factors that may apply) • Disaster Supplies (tools, suggested foods and water) • Disaster Communications (how) • Hurricane FAQs (what to expect) Attend the Hurricane Preparedness Workshop scheduled for May 21st. If we are fortunate, by the time you read this, life will be returning to normal. But, if we are still living in an environment of “selfisolation” and “safe at home,” please know that the Resident to Resident Resource Center is available to help in any way we can.

Who We Are

Today, the Resident to Resident Resource Center has grown to more than 30 volunteers who staff our office, manage support programs and workshops, and explore ways in which we can expand our services to the residents of Solivita. These volunteers represent a wide range of backgrounds, experience and skills, and we are fortunate to have such talented people on our team. With the addition of Jane Thomas as our Office Manager, we have become even more active in the roles we play. We are currently working on initiatives to expand on and provide information about various transportation options, and on the ways in which various programs can help residents find the things they need – from groceries to home goods – without ever leaving the house ... so timely in light of the “new normal” that COVID-19 has brought.

What We Do

The Resource Center conducts free workshops on a variety of topics that are both timely and of interest to Solivita residents throughout the year. We maintain a mobility equipment loan program that has become a crucial resource for residents. Anyone who needs to borrow equipment, on a short-term basis, such as walkers, scooters, canes, crutches, shower chairs, toileting equipment, or wheelchairs, can do so at no cost. We maintain a list of vendors who provide everything from simple handyman jobs to home remodeling, and from personal care to golf car maintenance. Simply call or email the Resource Center for a listing. Continued on page 13

SPEED ENFORCEMENT The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Here are Some Quick Facts on Speeding: A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs. Speed is a choice over which the driver has complete control.

The Northern Triangle of Central America, made up of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, is a special target of the administration, which hold the nations responsible for the large flow of migrants from Latin America to the U.S. With funds from the U.S. cut, how can the Northern Triangle countries curtail migration? • Tuesday, May 5th at 11am in the Gator Room and • Wednesday, May 20th at 4pm at The Palms

Spring in Solivita!

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Given the coronavirus pandemic that has swept the world, the spring of 2020 has been most unusual. We’re all aware of the impact on Solivita of the measures taken to protect residents and keep the community safe. At Floralawn, we’ve been mindful of the safety of Solivita residents and our own employees as we follow CDC guidelines while still maintaining lawns and landscaping throughout the community. Our commitment is to provide complete protection for everyone and still carry out important tasks.

Mowing

Our crews are back to their weekly mowing schedule, which includes string trimming, edging, and blowing off. Shrub and tree trimming are also scheduled regularly again.

Moss Removal

One of our May tasks is to get rid of Spanish and ball moss in trees up to a height of six feet. As picturesque as swaying Spanish moss can be, when it gets in the way of walkers or crew members maintaining the property, it needs to be removed.

ready for that again. Storm prep protocols include inspecting palms and trees for declining fronds and weak branches that could snap off in strong winds. We also examine trees near buildings and trim back branches that are touching walls or roofs. Our crews thin out dense trees to allow the wind to pass between branches more easily. This reduces the risk of trees being blown over in a storm.

Filling Out Teams for Growing Season

One of our annual spring tasks is to hire new employees to complete our maintenance and detail crews. The coronavirus pandemic has somewhat impacted this process, but we’ve still been able to fill out 14 work teams (seven maintenance and seven detail). These men and women care for all residential properties and common areas plus special zones such as pond banks. This should bring you current with our activities around Solivita. If you have questions, please call us at 863-225-9569 or visit SolivitaHOA.com > Click the “HOA” icon > Then click the Floralawn logo to see schedules and information. Happy May!

Replacements

Our crews are working on replacing sod, plants, and trees throughout Solivita that have died or are declining. At Floralawn, we maintain what we call “replacement lists,” which are records of everything we see that needs to be replanted or switched out. We work through these lists several times a year.

Preparing for Storm Season

June 1st is the beginning of hurricane season, so we’re getting

May Days

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge In my article this month, I’ve shared some important dates and holidays that fall in the month of May, as well as a few ideas of things to do while continuing to practice social distancing during this health pandemic.

Cinco de Mayo

May 5th is the Celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This is a great holiday to celebrate indoors as all you need is the Mexican train game, a margarita, some tortilla chips and guacamole. At least you can taste the celebration and have some fun!

Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10th to all our Solivita mothers. There is only one day out of the year dedicated to mothers, so don’t forget to show them how much they are appreciated.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day will be on Monday, May 25th. We should never forget the people who gave their lives to give us freedom. As we go through uncertain times dealing with the Coronavirus, we have no choice but to be brave. I only wish we had the strength that our soldiers had.

Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre

The Drive-In is located in Lakeland at 4100 U.S. 92 W. (New Tampa Highway). You may visit their website at www. silvermoondrivein.com or call 863-682-0849 to find out what movies are playing. They also have their snack bar items listed on their website.

Wild Florida’s Drive Through Safari

The safari is located at 3301 Lake Cypress Road in Kenansville. For those seeking an adventure, you are in luck! For $15 per adult and $10 per child, you may drive your own vehicle through gravel paths where you have an opportunity to see more than 100 native and exotic animals. Please call 407-957-3135 or visit them online at www.wildfloridairboats.com for more information.

Spring Cleaning!

Now is a great time to clean out those closets and garages!

A Little History on Plagues & Epidemics

Plagues and epidemics have ravaged humanity throughout the existence of homo sapiens on this planet. In some cases, entire civilizations have been annihilated. There is evidence as far back as 3000 B.C. that there were epidemics that wiped out two villages. Hamin Mangha and Miaozigou are the existing archaeological sites in China. We hear daily of the deaths from the Coronavirus and we are appalled. In Athens back around 430 B.C. an epidemic broke out killing 100,000 people. The Antonine Plague, thought to be smallpox, claimed over five million lives in the Roman Empire back in A.D. 165-80. Needless to say, there were catastrophic repercussions which were very instrumental in bringing an end to the Pax Romana which lasted from 27 B.C. to A.D. 180. The Bubonic plague, also known as the Plague of Justinian, is believed to have cleaned out 10% of the world’s population in A.D. 541-522. The Black Death meandered its way from Asia to Europe in 1346. It lasted until 1353 during which time it wiped out over half of Europe’s population. London experienced its outbreak of the Black Death in 1665, which killed around 100,000 people. Nearer to home, the Cocoliztli Epidemic, which was a form of viral hemorrhagic fever, killed 15 million of Mexico and Central America’s population. Smallpox and other Eurasian diseases brought to the Americas by the Europeans were responsible for wiping out the Incas, Aztec, and an estimated 90% of the indigenous people of the Western Hemisphere. In more recent times, the world has seen the Spanish Flu, Asian Flu, Zika virus, Ebola, HIV/Aids, and Polio, just to name a few. So, here we are now facing the Coronavirus. I believe that we are probably better equipped today to confront this pandemic than our forefathers were. We are resilient and in times of crises, we bond together for the good of the nation. We will get through this and be made stronger because of it. Chins up and God Bless! Community Concierge 863-427-7100 sdestefano@evergreen-LM.com

Spa Talk: Going Back to the Basics

[ Department] Articles

By Crystal Bethea Owner, Riviera Spa Massage

• Lemon: Talking about a good source of vitamin C? This immune boosting fruit helps support hydration, energy and fullness. Not feeling well or depressed? Consume more lemon. It helps. • Honey: Most of us know it helps as a cough suppressant. Did you know it helps with burns and wound healing? This is a fun read! Google it when you are free. • Essential Oils: My absolute favorite! Pure, quality essential oils (not the ones you by from the grocery store) can be used in combinations for almost everything health related; anti-viral, anti-bacterial, the list goes on with benefits. Download the essential oil reference guide on your cell phone and test a few recommended combinations. Seeing is believing they say. • Witch Hazel: I was a bit of a daredevil as a kid and this helped my cuts and bruises quite a bit. Its antiinflammatory properties are a good choice for acne, skin irritations and helps ward off infections as well. Make some time to research safe ways to use it.

Can any of you relate to that time when your throat got a little itchy as a child and you saw your mom pull the salt out from the pantry? (Laughing!) Gosh, I dreaded having to gargle the entire cup of warm saltwater solution until it was all finished. Funny thing is, it always seemed to work when I look back on it. Some of the natural and simple remedies we used growing up were so easy to get a hold of and even easier on the pockets compared to the alternatives. I’m guilty of it myself. Having so many options can cloud the vision from what you already have in your kitchen. My mother use to say, “Keep it simple, stupid,” which was a great method when making decisions.

Wellness Kit

Below, I have provided a list of some of my personal “Go To’s” that I call my wellness kit. • Epsom Salt: Good ole faithful! Putting a cup full in your bath water helps soak away body aches and pains. Make the time to refresh. • Baking Soda: Want to settle your stomach from indigestion, upset stomach, gas or heartburn? Add a little to your water for relief. I like to brush my teeth with it. It helps with whitening as well. • Salt: Excellent for sore mouth, throat and gums. A good swish and gargle will calm and ease symptoms.

It’s been awhile since my last article and I’ve missed sharing with you all. We got the new space up and going now, so make sure to look for next month’s article and our seminars. Riviera Spa Massage 407-914-9168 info@rivieraspamassage.com

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month By Susie Quattrochi Relay For Life Event Lead With over five million cases diagnosed each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 85% of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. By raising awareness of the dangers of unprotected exposure and encouraging sun-safe habits, we can change behaviors and save lives. With the incidence of this disease reaching epidemic levels, we can’t do this work alone. We need your help. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, which is the perfect time to get involved.
