May We Continue Indoors? By Jana Malik Director of Activities
Since the Mardi Gras Parade and Party held in mid-February, we’ve noticed a continuous increase of attendance at our outdoor events. With the increased comfort level of residents due to a higher percentage of vaccinations and confidence in the spread-out event layouts, we feel the community is ready to move the party indoors. Not to mention, we all know that Florida summers bring higher chances of rain and high humidity which really requires us to move events inside. With this information, we hope that you will continue to join us for upcoming events scheduled for the Ballroom which at the time of writing this article, allows 100 seat maximum capacity (with no wall dividers). Some of the events coming up includes Comedy Night, Family Feud game, The Odd Couple Play-Female Version, Battle of the Decades dance and much, much more.
area, will remain exactly as it currently is, but we will be evaluating these once the 4th Monday trucks start again.
Curbside Cuisine Photos by Joe Thomas
Event Occupancies in Relation to Ticket Availability Please note that Activities realizes the challenge limited capacities for events create. Events sell out quickly with indoor capacity at 75% with a maximum of 100. This is new for all of us and we will continue to monitor ticket sales and evaluate adding extra events when planning and budget permit. Thank you for hanging in there with us as we all maneuver this new way of doing things.
It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye
Curbside Cuisine Rolls Back on Select Evenings! Starting on Monday, May 24th, Curbside Cuisine on the 4th Monday of the month will return after a yearlong break. These 4th Mondays will also bring back DJ music, cash bar and seating up to 100 at its usual location by the Veteran’s Memorial in Freedom Park. Residents and their guests of all ages are welcome. NOTE: The weekly Curbside Cuisines on Wednesdays from 11am-1pm in the Farmer’s Market
Kaylee Febles, our amazing Activities Coordinator, has been given the opportunity to move on to her dream job of being an Activities Director. Kaylee has been a true asset to the team, with her upbeat personality, ability to connect with the residents and her high level of knowledge and attention to detail in every task that she takes on. The entire Solivita team and the residents will miss her. We wish Photo by Joe Thomas her the very best as she takes on this new challenge! If you were working on any projects with her, please contact any of the Activities staff to assist you. Let’s Keep The Party Going, INDOORS!!! Jana Malik 863-427-7125 jmalik@evergreen-LM.com

Visitors to Solivita
By Vickie Kellogg Membership Coordinator Welcome to all of the many new residents in Solivita! This is a review of the Visitor Pass Procedures for anyone not familiar with them. To view the complete document regarding the Procedures, please see your New Resident Packet, or SolivitaHOA. com > HOA > Membership > Visitor Pass Procedures. Visitor Passes are necessary only when visitors are going to use the Club Facilities which include, but are not limited to: Starlite Ballroom; Riviera Spa and Fitness; The Palms; the Gator Room; Mediterranean Skyline Rooms (Aegean, Baltic and Caspian Rooms); Art, Ceramics and Billiards Galleries; Library; Satellite Pools (including Clubhouses); and Freedom Park Recreation. Visitor passes are not necessary to have to visit a Resident’s home, any of the restaurants, or to attend a complimentary event such as a Street Party. Passes can be purchased for $1 per day at The Palms or the Riviera Fitness Center. If you would like access to the Dog Park for your four footed friends, you can purchase Doggie Visitor Passes too. They are available in the Activities Office (located above the Bistro) when presented with proof of up-to-date vaccinations. Please remember it is against Solivita rules and regulations for a Resident to give a visitor their badge for access to the Club Facilities. Passes CANNOT be purchased by Residents prior to their visit and anyone 3 years of age and better must have a pass. Every visitor must sign an Informed Consent Agreement and Waiver Form before they can receive a Visitor Pass. A Resident or Adult Visitor must sign for anyone under the age of 18. Adults that are added to the Resident’s Gatehouse list may
purchase passes without the presence of the Resident. All Adult Visitors must sign an Informed Consent Agreement and Waiver for themselves and any accompanying minors. If the visitors ARE NOT listed on your Gatehouse list, Resident’s must be present with their Solivita ID and all the adult visitors that want a pass. A visitor under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a Resident or an Adult with a Visitor Pass at all times and are only allowed to use: the recreation complexes at Freedom Park with reservations; all the Satellite pools; The Palms Pool Monday-Friday, 12pm-4pm and all day on Saturday and Sunday. Riviera Spa & Fitness Center pool is adults only. Youth visitors are welcome to tour the other Club facilities but are not allowed to participate in activities in the other facilities, i.e., Billiards, Library or use the computers, unless advertised as an event for all ages. If you didn’t already know, we have a drop box for Visitor Passes located on the parking lot side of the Administration Building entrance. If The Palms or Riviera facilities are closed you can drop them into the box and staff will check them in for you. If you are a seasonal tenant and want to drop off your Solivita ID when the office is closed, please use this box and Membership will close your records. We have moved the location of the visitor pass drop box from the space next to the UPS and FedEx boxes to the left side of the door making access to the box easier. SPEED ENFORCEMENT The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results.

Moving Forward!
By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge Moving forward while dealing with COVID-19 is quite a challenge. Many of us have lost someone dear to us, but he or she will continue to live daily in our thoughts. That life will never be forgotten; however, we must move forward because that is what they would have wanted us to do. Those who have been vaccinated can start to move in that direction, and will hopefully enjoy everything going on in the area this month. Some of us are not quite there yet, but we can still celebrate and enjoy the important dates and things to do this month.
Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday, May 5th is the Celebration of the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
Mother’s Day Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9th. A shower of love is all that a mother ever wants in life from her family.
Memorial Day Memorial Day will be on Monday, May 31st. Sometimes things happen in our lives and we are devastated. On days like this one, you think how blessed we are to have such little things affect us when men and women have died risking their lives to protect us. May we never forget their sacrifice and in our hardships, may the memory of their strength give us the power to soldier on.

You can check out events by visiting sunsetwalk.com/events. It is a month to remember and in doing so we must reflect on life itself. Life is a lot of things, but as long as you are satisfied with your accomplishments it was worth all your sacrifices. Know that when someone touched your core they lived a full accomplished life and their light will shine through those who love them. To truly honor them we must carry out their wishes by moving forward.

2021 RESIDENTS’ SOLIVITA CAR SHOW RECAP [ Department] Articles
By Gene Burch Car Show Committee Chair Many thanks are needed for all of the Solivita resident volunteers, sponsors, vendors, Model Railroad Club, staff and the 88 “resident” Car Show participants for making this the MOST successful event to date. The success of the event is most rewarded to this year’s show charity, St. Ann’s Food Pantry in Haines City. We received many compliments at the show on how everything was spread out, the number of great vehicles showcased as well as the spectacular railroad modular display setup in the Art Gallery. A few of the responses heard mentioned that it “must take a lot” to put this event on, and that it does! Here is a small sampling of how we are able to do this show from start to finish. Almost a year prior to the event, the show committee has a wrap up meeting from the previous event, what went right, what went wrong and suggestions for the next show. For the next several months, we work on the nitty gritty details for the upcoming show’s registration form, logistics and any other changes needing discussion. Then, the resident committee members attend many local car show events advertising our car show and we notify local businesses the opportunities of have a booth at the event. Several months prior to the event the Activities team works on their very long list of lining up all of the supplies, entertainment, printing assorted signage, ordering T-shirts, trophies and plaques, arranging the goody bags and personnel (photographers, 50 event volunteers, food and beverage catering, housekeeping, maintenance and security), and much, much more that is required for the day of the show. Volunteers are assigned different duties: goodie bag assembly, decorating and balloons, registration, Info Booths, raffle, sponsor set up, cleanup, vehicle parkers and judges. Yes, it does take an army to organize and run this four-hour event. And shortly after the event is over, it is “like it never happened,” and Solivita is ready for their next great event. The sponsored charity has no easy task of “simply accepting the donation check.” They are also part of the Car Show Committee and work just as hard behind the scenes too. They assisted with collecting numerous raffle donations and goody bag items from local businesses and fellow residents, pre-selling 6,000 raffle tickets at the Monday Farmer’s Market two months before the day of the event and on the day of the event, they were in charge of multiple tasks at the car show’s Info Booths and the raffle table! After the show was over, they arranged the plethora of raffle donations, drew 63 raffle winners, assigned their name to their prize and contacted each one to collect it! This year was a challenge in trying to keep social distancing amongst the sponsor booths, registered vehicles, the spectators and the handing out of the awards at the owner’s vehicles (instead of at the usual location of the DJ booth on the Village Center bridge.) To give you perspective on how generous the Solivita residents are and how hard the Car Show Committee and the charity works to raise money during a pandemic compared to a normal year, let us show you how much money was raised in 2019 (normal year) in comparison to 2021 (resident only year). In 2019, we registered over 170 vehicles and had 40 sponsors and we generated over $9,000 for the Meals on Wheels charity. This year, 2021, with only 88 registered Solivita resident vehicles, 20 sponsors, months of pre-sale raffle selling, day of event People’s Choice voting cards, and Car Show t-shirt sales, we were able to generate a little over $11,000 for the St. Ann’s Food Pantry! How great is that! And none of this would have been possible without one of the founding Car Show Committee member, Solivita resident Andy Edlund, who served 10 dedicated years on this committee. His knowledge and expertise on how to make the Solivita Car Show reach a high caliber in comparison to some other top-notch car shows is evident by all who attend our Car Show. Andy received a plaque at the 2021 Solivita Car Show as a token of our appreciation, service and time. We hope to make him proud as we continue his legacy in the upcoming car shows. Gratefully, the 2021 Car Show Committee and Activities Department

Spring Produce Guide Submitted By Stonegate Golf Club If you regularly shop at the farmers’ market, and eat with the seasons using our Seasonal Food Guide, then you’ve been eating a lot of apples, potatoes, squash and other hardy fruit and vegetables that keep all winter long. However with spring, we’re finally beginning to see the light. Suddenly it’s all spring greens, asparagus, leeks and peas, plus radishes and rhubarb for some pretty pinks. While spring isn’t quite the drop-everythingdeliciousness of summer’s juicy tomatoes and sweet peaches, it’s a very welcome dive into fresh flavors. Here are some of the in-season items you can enjoy for the next few months, either individually, or in combination.
(depending on where you live) and disappearing by early June. Fresh fava beans are often paired with mint in salads, go very well with poached eggs, and can also be grilled for summery flavor in spring.
Fiddleheads The curly cue coiled shape of the fiddlehead looks more like a decorative houseplant than a dinner ingredient. While fiddleheads are the shoots of fern plants, they are also edible, with a nutty, slightly bitter flavor that’s similar to asparagus. Fiddleheads are widely enjoyed in a variety of Asian countries.
Artichokes With so many other spring options, an artichoke’s thorny leaves and many-layered heart may seem like just too much work for the reward. The hearts can be deep-fried, marinated or used as a topping for salads, pasta and pizza.
Greens
Asparagus Despite its year-round appearance in modern American grocery stores, asparagus is far tastier when enjoyed in the spring. Asparagus can be cooked in a variety of ways — roasted, grilled, steamed or shaved thin and eaten raw — and is classically served with hollandaise sauce, topped with breadcrumbs in au gratin or puréed into a bright springy soup.
Fava Beans Fava beans have a short season, showing up as early as February

Spring greens are one of the earliest things you’ll see at the market, thanks to their ability to grow indoors quickly. There are a variety of greens harvested right now. Arugula is loved for its peppery bite, as well known these days in a classic salad as it is on top of pizza. Watercress’ lovely little leaves pack a crisp, peppery punch. Meet More of the Volunteers Who Keep the Resource Center Running Tina Begleiter Tina opened “Dreamcatcher Cottage,” a bed and breakfast on her property in Woodstock, NY after retiring from working in major gift giving for 32 years; her last 14 years with the Weizmann Institute of Science. She moved to Solivita six years ago after visiting friends here over the years and decided this was the place for her. Volunteering at the Resource Center allows Tina the opportunity to interact, engage, and help people.
Luisa Eilenberger Luisa moved to Solivita a year and a half ago from Queens, NY where she worked for 26 years at a plumbing supply company. She fell in love with Solivita at first sight. Luisa enjoys volunteering at the Resource Center because she is helping others. Her hobbies include Mahjong, bingo and volunteering.

Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
By Rita Milios Psychotherapist and Holistic Wellness Coach, Riviera Spa Massage May is Better Sleep Month, so it’s a good time to bone up on the benefits of better sleep and how to achieve it ...
The Importance of a Good Night’s Sleep Getting a good night’s sleep not only helps you feel better during the day, it also helps you maintain good overall health. Poor sleep increases your risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. It can interfere with your body’s hormones, leading to irritability, mood swings, cognitive impairment and slowed motor coordination. Lack of sleep can also affect your immune system, making you more likely to get sick with colds, flus and other illnesses. On the other hand, a good night’s sleep provides your body with the time and conditions it needs to repair itself. Sleep helps the body rebuild muscles, reduces stress and inflammation, improves your memory, and possibly even helps protect you from cancer by regulating levels of melatonin, a hormone that suppresses the growth of tumors.
Sleep and Older Adults A 2020 National Sleep Foundation survey of adults aged 55 and older found that one-third of people aged 55-64 and one quarter of people aged 65-84 reported that their sleep quality had worsened over time. Nearly half of those over the age of 65 said they had at least one sleep problem, with insomnia being the most common problem. In general, older people do tend to sleep less, wake up more often during the night, and spend less time in deep sleep or dreaming than younger people. Causes of diminished sleep quality in older adults range from medication side-effects, to worry and stress, grief, and physical conditions such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and enlarged prostrate problems in men, that lead to more frequent bathroom trips. With insomnia, you may take longer to fall asleep, wake up often during the night, or wake up earlier than you’d like, resulting in feeling tired and sleepy during the day. But fortunately, there are ways (other than reliance on sleep medications that don’t have good long-term outcomes) to improve both the quality and the quantity of your sleep.

Tips for Better Sleep First, think about safety and peace of mind. Make sure that all your doors and windows are locked and your smoke alarm is activated. Keep a telephone with emergency numbers at your bedside and have a lamp within easy reach. Place a glass of water on your nightstand in case you wake up thirsty. Remove area rugs that might be a trip hazard if you have to get up during the night to go to the bathroom. Banish stressors from your bedroom and bedtime routine. TV, smart phones or other electronics should be powered off at least a half hour before you plan to go to sleep. Don’t bring worries or to-do lists to bed with you. Instead, you might consider incorporating a restful ritual such as doing a few minutes of journaling or reflection about one or more situations that made you feel grateful or appreciative during the day. A brief meditation or prayer is also a good way to calm your mind and help you drift off in a positive mental state. Lowering your thermostat a few degrees at bedtime will help reduce your core body temperature, a natural process that aids sleep. Interestingly, going to sleep with socks on your feet will also hasten the reduction of core body temperature and help you get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer. Taking a warm bath before bed can help reduce restless leg syndrome symptoms or the tendency to have automatic jerking or kicking while sleeping. Some people find that drinking a small cup of non-caffeinated herbal tea (chamomile, lavender, valerian) or using aromatherapy scents, especially lavender, are helpful in encouraging sleepiness. Finally, remember that if you regularly nap during the day, especially in the afternoon or evening, you may be disrupting your natural sleep-wake cycle. Try to gradually reduce daytime napping and establish a consistent, well-thought-out bedtime routine instead. Foods to Have on Hand in a Hurricane Submitted by Solivita CERT We are approaching hurricane season, which normally starts June 1st but may be earlier based on last year’s season. You should be prepared to live without electric power for a few days. Here are some simple recommendations for establishing a food supply that can carry you through such a period. When you purchase such items, remember to choose items you will actually eat—not ones you wouldn’t like anyway, and be sure to have a manual can opener. You have a few weeks to build up your supplies in your disaster kit and get rid of outdated items.
Food Checklist Solivita CERT recommends the foods on this checklist to have on hand before a hurricane (that is, start now—buy a couple items each week): • Canned and jarred meats • Non-perishable foods – cereal, crackers, etc. • Canned fruits • Canned vegetables • Canned soups, stews, chili • Instant coffee, tea and cocoa • Unsalted nuts (don’t add to your need for water) • Jelly and honey
Reflections | May 2021 |
• Powdered drink mixes • Fruit juices, vegetable juices, diet soda • Pet food
Items to Stock Up on as Soon as You Know a Hurricane is Approaching: • Bottled water (at least a gallon per day, per household member) • Apples, lemons, bananas, oranges • Individual packs of juices, drinks • Raisins and other dried fruits • Cheeses that don’t need refrigeration • Cookies, crackers and chips • Small boxes of dry cereal • Bread, muffins, bagels • Peanut butter • Condiments (these can help make other items more palatable) • Ice (of course you can make your own, too, and make extra for in the fridge) These recommendations are offered by your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team.

Moving Into May
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn It has been a busy spring around Solivita as Floralawn crews have been hard at work tending to plants, trees and turf.
Weeding, Pruning & Planting Early spring saw us digging into weed control protocols and completing scheduled fertilizer applications. We tackled the annual crape myrtle pruning, getting all the crapes across Solivita pruned and ready for the new year’s growth. We finished up the native grass pruning and rejuvenation pruning, conducted on sparse and leggy plants. We completed the first round of the 2021 plant and sod replacements. Floralawn conducts plant and turf audits throughout the year, noting where damage has occurred or plants/ grass have died. We carry out replacements according to triaged lists, and in May we’re starting installations in the second list. (We usually work through nine lists over the course of the year.)
Does it seem like you’re seeing us around more these days? It’s because last month we moved to weekly mowing of your lawns and the grass around all the ponds. Pond banks may seem like low-care areas, but installations such as poles, drain boxes, and conduits all require special attention. Our detail crews make sure that pond banks and common spaces are kept trimmed and safe.
What’s Ahead This Month? This month we continue to remove Spanish and ball moss from all shrubs and trees across Solivita, up to six feet in height. We aim to keep shrubs and trees looking neat and to maintain unobstructed space on sidewalks and pathways.
A Complete Team
May has us looking ahead to June and the advent of the summer storm season. In preparation for that, we’re inspecting all palms and trees, particularly those close to homes and buildings. Where limbs and fronds are touching walls and roofs, Floralawn crews are trimming them back. Ensuring that trees and palms are not in contact with building surfaces keeps the possibility of damage to a minimum.
Spring also brought the acquisition of new employees, bringing us to a complete team of maintenance crews and detail crews. Being fully staffed with carefully vetted and thoroughly trained grounds people enables us as a company to give Solivita the best care possible.
That brings you up to date on our activities as we work every day to keep Solivita beautiful! If you have any questions, just call us: 863-225-9569. Or stop by our office in the admin building in downtown Solivita and talk to Yennifer.
