Annually in May, the Solivita Departments group together to pamper the 171 volunteers at a volunteer appreciation event. We show them our sincere gratitude with lunch, a cocktail, gifts, awards, and entertainment created and performed by the Solivita Staff. Just like with families, it takes a village to manage, operate and run Solivita. Thank you Solivita volunteers, we can’t say it enough! Photos by Joe Thomas & Bill Labita.

What Makes Solivita “Go Round” BY JANA MALIK DIRECTOR OF ACTIVITIES We’ll say it today, tomorrow, and every day, Solivita volunteers help make Solivita “go round.” Solivita is a very large community, and just like in a large family, it takes a village to manage, operate and run it. Volunteers keep us afloat, which is the theme of this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Event. The Solivita departments get together to brainstorm, plan, rehearse, and then pamper the many volunteers annually in May with lunch, a cocktail, gifts, awards, and unique entertainment created and performed by the Solivita staff. When you see a fellow resident volunteer at the next event or other service task they are doing, please thank them for their time. (Photos below by Joe Thomas.)

The R2R Resource Center is Here for You! Workshop: Scams & Fraud Seniors Face Thursday, May 26th • 10am • Ballroom Have you been victim of a scam or someone trying to defraud you; then this workshop is for you. Seniors are the largest demographic impacted by fraud! Lilia Vega from Polk County Sheriff’s Office will be here to talk about: » Scams and fraud impacting seniors » Signs to look for » How to protect yourself from scams » What to do if you have been a victim of a scam
» Think about buying a special alarm that you wear as a bracelet or necklace; if you have fallen or have issues with balance. » Don’t rush to answer the phone. Many people fall trying to answer the phone. » When walking on smooth floors, wear non-slip footwear, that are flat, thin-soled, and fit well. » If you have a cane or a walker, use it at all times instead of holding onto walls and furniture.
Register by calling the Resource Center at 863-236-9973 or email solivitar2r@gmail.com.
Home Safety Tips for Seniors
With a growing number of older adults living independently, it’s increasingly important to make sure that you are safe at home. Keep Emergency Numbers Handy » Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222 » Family member or friend to call in case of emergency (also give them a key) » Healthcare provider’s office, and keep a list of medications Prevent Falls » Fall Risk Assessment - if you have difficulty with walking, balance, or have fallen in the past year, talk to your healthcare provider about having a special falls risk assessment. » Establish (check with your healthcare provider) exercise program to help with balance. 6
Safety-Proof Your Home » Make sure all hallways, stairs, and paths are well lit and clear of objects. » Use rails and banisters when going up and down the stairs. » Remove rugs to avoid tripping. » Coil or tape cords and wires next to the wall so that you can’t trip over them. Have Good Lighting » Replace any burnt-out light bulbs. » Install new light and brighter fixtures. » Install motion detection lighting outside the home. » Test all lighting by standing in one corner of a room and Article continued on page 7

Hurricane Season is Coming – Will You be Ready? BY SOLIVITA CERT
Avoid Bathroom Hazards » Have grab bars installed in the shower and near the toilet to make getting around easier and safer. » Put rubber mats in the bathtub to prevent slipping. » If you are having a hard time getting in and out of your tub, or on and off the toilet, get a special tub chair or bench, or raised toilet seat.
This is a good time to establish or update your disaster supplies kit. It will provide a minimum of items to carry you through the effects of a major disaster. Such a disaster could be a natural weather phenomenon like a hurricane or a man-made disaster like a terrorist attack. Having a plan and putting together a disaster kit means answering questions like: Protect Against Fire and Related Dangers » Change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly. » If there is a fire in your home, don’t try to put it out. Leave and call 911. Know at least two ways to get out of your home. » When you’re cooking, don’t wear loose clothes or clothes with long flowing sleeves. » Replace appliances that have fraying or damaged electrical cords. » Don’t put too many electric cords into one socket or extension cord. » Never smoke in bed or leave candles burning in an empty room. » Make sure heaters are at least three feet away from anything that can burn, such as curtains, bedding, or furniture. Turn off space heaters when you leave the room. R2R Resource Center 863-236-9973 SolivitaR2R@gmail.com

» What am I going to eat and drink if power is out and access to groceries is cut off? » How will I know what is going on? » What tools and supplies will I need to mitigate damage to my home? » What kinds of information will I need to recover my property and normal life? » What supplies should I take with me if I am forced to leave my home? So, your kit needs water, foods (that can be prepared without electricity); a weather radio (for all-hazard warnings); some hand tools for quick repairs; a file of important papers; a supply of your meds; and containers (small enough to handle) to keep all this in. Also, food and meds for your pets. SOLIVITAHOA.COM TIP
SPEED ENFORCEMENT The HOA, Security, and Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Check out what the stats were in previous months airing on Solivita Community Channel 732. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results.

2022 CAR SHOW RECAP
Department Articles
Photos by Joe Thomas
It seems like we have finally gotten back to “normal” as we reopened the Solivita Car Show to the public, including allowing non-resident display of cars, for the first time since March 2019. We even set a few Solivita Car Show records. We had 139 pre-registered, 31 day of registered vehicles, 15 car clubs from all over Florida and one Solivita resident, Bill Mitchell, who entered six of his own vehicles, which won two separate awards! Vehicles started lining up way before the sun came up and were greeted by the many volunteers and staff needed to pull off this great event. The event was elevated due to having DJ JR Goodman, a red Mustang Robocar taking pictures and rolling around, the Flipbook People taking pictures of the participating cars on the green screen, the tattoo parlor hosted by the Solivita Older Biker’s and the extensive and well explained modular train display created by the Model Railroad of Solivita Club. Many thanks go out to Felice Gromek, President, Solivita Friends Helping Those In NEED and club members who worked tirelessly selling raffle tickets for a record of 88 raffle baskets and prizes. Sales from these raffles, car registrations, sponsors, T-shirt sales and the People’s Choice Voting cards came out to an approximate amount of $21,000 (as of writing this article, final accounting is being held) for the St. Vincent de Paul St. Ann’s Food Panty in Haines City!! Thanks to all of the hard work by the 100 dedicated volunteers, our on-site EMT, Security, Catering, Club Communications, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Car Show Committee and the Activities team as we heard tons of great comments from those in attendance, “Best Show yet”, “Wow, what a great car show”, “Been to many shows outside of Solivita, this was the first time for this show and it was the best.” We already had our committee wrap-up meeting where we discussed several things we can do for next year to make it even better.

May Momentum
BY BRAD THOMPSON BRANCH MANAGER, FLORALAWN It has been a busy spring around Solivita as Floralawn crews have been hard at work tending to plants, trees and turf.
Weeding, Pruning & Planting
Early spring saw us digging into weed control protocols and completing scheduled fertilizer applications. We tackled the annual crape myrtle pruning, getting all the crapes across Solivita pruned and ready for the new year’s growth. We finished up the native grass pruning, and rejuvenation pruning was conducted on sparse and leggy plants. We completed the first round of 2022 plant and sod replacements. Floralawn conducts plant and turf audits throughout the year. We note where damage has occurred and where plants and shrubs or grass have died. We carry out replacements according to triaged lists, tackling the highest priority items first and working our way through the lists.
A Complete Team
Spring also brought the acquisition of new employees, bringing us to a complete team of maintenance crews and detail crews. Being fully staffed with carefully vetted and thoroughly trained grounds people, enables us as a company to give Solivita the best care possible. Does it seem like you’re seeing us around more these days? It’s because last month we moved to weekly

mowing of your lawns and the grass around all the ponds. Pond banks may seem like low-care areas, but installations such as poles, drain boxes, and conduits all require special attention. Our detail crews make sure that pond banks and common spaces are kept trimmed and safe.
What’s Ahead This Month?
This month we continue to remove Spanish and ball moss from all shrubs and trees across Solivita, up to six feet in height. We aim to keep shrubs and trees looking neat and to maintain unobstructed space on sidewalks and pathways. May has us looking ahead to June and the advent of the summer storm season. In preparation for that, we’re inspecting all palms and trees, particularly those close to homes and buildings. Where limbs and fronds are touching walls and roofs, Floralawn crews are trimming them back. Ensuring that trees and palms are not in contact with building surfaces keeps the possibility of damage to a minimum. That brings you up to date on our activities as we work every day to keep Solivita beautiful! Our next Coffee Talk will be in Mosaics at 9am on Friday, May 27th. Know the Warning Signs of Stroke
BY RITA MILIOS PSYCHOTHERAPIST & HOLISTIC WELLNESS COACH, C3 WELLNESS SPA
May is Stroke Awareness Month
A stroke, also called a CVA (cerebrovascular accident) or “brain attack,” occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is reduced or blocked completely, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Strokes are a leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of serious disability for adults. While anyone can have a stroke at any age, the older you are, the more susceptible you are for having a stroke. The good news is that permanent damage from strokes is preventable, if they are caught and treated in time. Patients who arrive at an emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms typically have less disability 3 months post- stroke than those who receive delayed care. There are two kinds of stroke. Most people are familiar with ischemic strokes, that happen when the blood supply to the brain is blocked by a blood clot. But strokes also occur when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. These strokes are called hemorrhagic strokes.
Signs & Symptoms of a Stroke
Everyone should know the signs and symptoms of a stroke. An easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke and how to respond is with the acronym F.A.S.T. Use this “stroke test” to detect signs of a stroke happening to yourself or to someone else. • F = Face Drooping: Smile (or ask the other person to smile) Does one side droop? • A = Arm Weakness: Raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? • S = Speech Difficulty: Say a simple sentence. Are the words slurred? • T = Time to Call 9-1-1: If you or another person shows any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately. Stroke treatment can begin in the ambulance and greatly reduce lasting damage.
Other Common Signs of Stroke
Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body: The numbness may not be limited to the face and arms; it can be experienced in the spine, legs, or feet. 16
Sudden balance or coordination problems hindering the ability to walk evenly; or the development of a slouch that hinders the ability to sit up straight. Vision problems that are drastic and occur suddenly. Blurriness, loss of peripheral vision, or total loss of vision are signs of stroke when they occur abruptly, without warning. Sudden confusion - not being able to recall basic facts such as the year, one’s own name, or their location are all indicators of a possible stroke. Communication problems, such as slurred speech or having trouble understanding others. Sudden, painful headache is also a symptom. Headaches associated with strokes are different from other types of headaches in that they occur without warning and are extremely painful. Headache pain that greatly escalates within seconds may be related to a stroke. If any of these signs appear suddenly and are strong enough to make you take notice, then, seek help. When in doubt, get it checked out; call 9-1-1 immediately. How fast the patient gets to the hospital and the type of stroke they are having greatly affects their long-term outcome.
Stroke Prevention
High blood pressure is the single most important treatable risk factor for stroke. Practice stoke-prevention habits such as maintaining a healthy weight and eating a diet low in sodium. Don’t smoke, limit alcohol and be physically active. Reduce stress whenever possible, as stress increases your risk of both high blood pressure and stroke. Meditation is one of the best ways to reduce stress and control blood pressure without medication. Join me on Wednesday, May 18th from 2pm-3pm at the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center, 2nd Floor Classroom (RSF2), for Meditation for Health: Simple Techniques and Helpful Tips.
