Let the Holidays Begin!

By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge November’s birth flower, the Chrysanthemum, comes in many colors and varieties. The flower symbolizes compassion, friendship and abundance, which seems so fitting for the upcoming month ahead. Check out some fun facts about November holidays below and, just in case you want some more entertainment this month, I have also included some things to do in the area!

children will be able to listen to stories at 11:30am and 1:30pm, perform “chores” around the house and enjoy fun crafts! Free admission and parking. The event is located at Pioneer Village at Shingle Creek (2491 Babb Road). Visit osceolahistory.org/ event/26th-annual-pioneer-day for more information. OSCEOLAHISTORY.ORG

Veterans Day

A Congressional Act approved on May 13, 1938 made November 11th a legal holiday known as Armistice Day. Then on June 1, 1954, Congress amended the bill replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans” and November 11th has been known as Veterans Day ever since. On this day we remember all the veterans who have served our country. Similar recognition is celebrated in other countries albeit not on the same day as the U.S. does. Please take the time out to remember the courageous men and women who have served our nation and shed their blood for our freedom.

Thanksgiving

Soon everyone will be planning on where they will go for Thanksgiving dinner or who they will have over. The simple part of this massive meal, that was supposed to last for 4 days, is the menu as it’s pretty consistent. So, let’s discuss the holiday that stretches our waistline to its full potential! It is believed by some that the first “Thanksgiving” took place in 1621 when the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians partook of a harvest feast. Our forefathers continued celebrating thanksgiving in their own fashion for the next 200 years in different colonies and states. In 1863 President Lincoln declared, by presidential proclamation, that Thanksgiving Day should be celebrated by all of the states in November, in what some believe to be, an attempt to foster a sense of American unity between Northern and Southern states.

26th Annual Pioneer Day Festival

This event, on Saturday, November 11th from 10am-4pm, is close by in Kissimmee and has something for everyone in the family. There will be a Pioneer Day Art, Crafts & Market where you may purchase unique arts, crafts and food products. Bring the little ones to experience a taste of history. In the Kids Zone,

Literary Lecture

Have your 2017 Annual Pass in hand for quick entry! Book: Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott • Monday, November 13th The Palms • 4pm • Tuition: 2017 Art and Literary Lecture Pass or $5 at the Door Professor: Thomas Gallagher, PhD is a Solivita resident who has taught both literature and law during his career. He currently teaches government at Valencia College. Course Description: Ivanhoe is the story of one of the remaining Saxon noble families at a time when the English nobility was overwhelmingly Norman. It follows

the Saxon protagonist, Wilfrid of Ivanhoe, who is out of favor with his father owing to his courting the Lady Rowena and for his allegiance to the Norman king Richard I of England. The story is set in 1194, after the end of the Third Crusade, when many of the Crusaders were still returning to Europe. The legendary Robin Hood, initially under the name of Locksley, is also a character in the story, as are his ‘merry men,’ including Friar Tuck. The character that Scott gave to Robin Hood in Ivanhoe helped shape the modern notion of this figure as a cheery noble outlaw.

CERT Needs Your Help! Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

After the recent hurricane experiences, your Solivita CERT team could use your help in several areas outlined below: 1. DO YOU HAVE A GENERATOR that you plan to use during a power outage? If you would be willing to share it with others who need power for a variety of life-sustaining reasons, please reply as noted below. 2. DO YOU HAVE A VEHICLE THAT COULD TRANSPORT AN INJURED PERSON from their house to our medical center in the Ballroom if set up? Target vehicles are pick-up trucks, minivans, and SUVs and you can drive. 3. DO YOU HAVE A MEDICAL BACKGROUND? Our medical team would be swamped if we had a significant hurricane or tornado. We could use help from residents who have had medical training. Note that we only provide limited care and really no treatment beyond first aid, so a current license is not required. You could help us tend to injured neighbors before they can be transported. Please let us know if you would be willing to volunteer for our “Medical Reserve.” 4. IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE AWAY for several days or weeks or even months, please HURRICANE-PROOF YOUR

| 12 |

HOME before you go. ALWAYS leave a key with someone who can check on your property while you are away. You will not want to return to a home damaged by water intrusion after some weeks or months. Plan to inventory your property for what shouldn’t be out in hurricane force winds. 5. You can VOLUNTEER TO ASSIST CERT AFTER AN EMERGENCY IN WAYS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE CERT TRAINING. These activities could include being a scribe and documenting activities in the field or in our medical center, driving around the community with CERT members or supplies, directing traffic, distributing flyers, or assisting residents with special needs. If you would like to help in any of these areas, we would like to get your name and phone number to place on our “Volunteer List.” Your participation will always come after you take care of your household, property, and your local neighborhood. We dodged a bullet with Hurricane Irma, but next time we might not be so fortunate. Let’s all be prepared. Contact CERT at 863-514-6728 and leave your name and number or send an email to waynendi@ cfl.rr.com. We will get back to you. Thanks in advance.

Sweet November!

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Wow, what a year!! Floralawn has completed a full year here at Solivita and we continue to work hard for you every day. We’ve had a lot of challenges to overcome during our first year— first, the initial clean-up, then the drought, then the summer rains, and finally, to finish things off, Hurricane Irma!! What a storm she was, knocking over 400 trees down, with some 300 more that needed to be straightened and staked, and producing tons and tons of debris that we had to remove. The team here at Floralawn worked closely with the Evergreen team to get the roads, driveways and sidewalks cleared as quickly as we could. We had Solivita up and running again in just a few short days.

A Brief Review from October

In October’s Reflections article, I stated that the first, second, and third sod lists were nearly finished, and that the third plant replacement list would be completed soon. However, Hurricane Irma threw a wrench in those plans. The sod installation resumed at the beginning of October, but the third plant replacement list was placed on hold by the HOA until the cost of damage caused by Hurricane Irma can be completely assessed.

Mowing and Detail Schedules

On November 1st we will switch over to the off-season mowing

schedule, which is bi-weekly and will be in place through March 2018. The detail schedule remains the same through the winter months. All the winter schedules are available to view on the Solivita HOA website, SolivitaHOA.com, and as always, you may contact us at 863-225-9565 or visit Emily in the Solivita Administration Building.

Breast Cancer Awareness

You may have noticed several pink painted ribbons on the turf around Solivita during the month of October. They were placed there by Floralawn team members to bring awareness to the horrible disease of breast cancer and to support those who have fought it.

On Our Radar

As mentioned last month, brown patch fungus is an ongoing concern during the cooler months. It affects St. Augustine grass, attacking the base of the grass blade and showing up as large brown circles. We’re actively working to manage this disease.

Coffee Talk

My next Floralawn Coffee Talk is scheduled for Friday, November 10th at 9am in the Starlite Ballroom. Please stop by and don’t forget to bring your questions!

Floralawn poses while doing a super clean-up job after Hurricane Irma! Courtesy of Judie Chiappone.
