Oh Yes, the Holiday Season is Here! By Jana Malik Director of Activities

The day after we host the Salute Our Veterans Weekend events, the Solivita Community entrances, neighborhood markers, Administration and the Club facilities will start to look festive with holiday décor. November 12th might seem early to most people, but due to the outsourced holiday decorator’s schedule and Solivita’s schedule, we have learned from years of experience that this time frame works best. Holiday décor remains up until January 7th.

take down the ornament after which the club must either store it or design another ornament next year. To purchase an ornament, one per club and neighborhood, stop by the Activities office. Decorated ornaments are to be RETURNED to the Activities office between November 5th-8th ONLY.

Activities Gift Cards; A Great Gift Idea

The $25 Activities events and/or Solivita University classes Gift Card is available throughout the year for a creative gift idea. The gift card is available at $25 values only. Assorted gift card sleeves including Thank You, Happy Birthday and A Gift for You are included.

It might sound crazy, but with my busy holiday schedule, I had already begun Christmas gift shopping a few months ago and by the second weekend in November, I will already have my home adorned with holiday decorations so I can focus and enjoy a stress-free Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and holiday season with my family. It’s funny because the day before I wrote this article, in late September, I had planned (no surprise right?) that weekend to decorate my home for the holidays. I also advise the Activities staff to plan ahead for their holiday decorating and shopping before it gets hectic in the office. Though I am not sure whether they take my advice, they handle the holiday season very well.

SLAC

The Solivita Lifestyles Activities Committee (SLAC) will have three open seats starting in January. Please refer to the Committee Roundup section in this month’s newsletter for more information on how to apply. THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 12TH. Residents are our eyes and ears in producing and improving the Activities program for Solivita to enjoy.

Last Chance – Holiday Ornaments

The Christmas Tree located on the grassy knoll outside the Ballroom will be transformed into a Solivita Community Christmas Tree adorned with hand painted and decorated medium sized ornaments designed by Solivita Clubs and Neighborhood groups. Activities are selling ornaments for $5 each in silver and gold and proceeds will be donated to the XL 106.7 Baby DJ Program. Outsourced decorators will hang and

Main Ticket Sales – Friday, November 1st

Here are some friendly reminders for the next Main Ticket Sales in the Ballroom: • You MUST present your Solivita Resident ID badge. • Ballroom doors open and deli ticket numbers are handed out at 8am. Numbers are called beginning at 9am. • Each resident is permitted to purchase four (4) tickets, per event, per deli ticket number, unless otherwise noted in the Reflections Event Pages located on the back of the tri-fold monthly calendar. This gives more residents an opportunity to purchase tickets to events with limited seating. • If a group wants to sit together at a tabled event, please wait in line together. Each person must get a deli ticket number to purchase tickets. If the rest of your group is later in the line, and receives a deli ticket number higher than yours, come up to purchase your tickets when the higher number is called. We cannot hold tickets for the rest of your group when the lower deli ticket number is called. • After all numbers are called (approximately 10:30am), you need to call clubs directly to purchase tickets from them and Activities Tickets Sales moves to the Activities Office at the Bistro Café 2nd Floor. Happy Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Holiday Decorating! Let’s Keep the Party Going! Jana Malik 863-427-7125 jmalik@evergreen-LM.com

SPEED ENFORCEMENT

The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs.

Chef’s Corner

By Chef Curtis Hillard CEC, CPC Executive Chef, Stonegate Golf Club

Did You Know….

Tilapia is the common name for nearly a hundred species of cichlid fish. Tilapia are mainly freshwater fish inhabiting shallow streams, ponds, rivers, and lakes, and less commonly found living in brackish water. Historically, they have been of major importance in artisanal fishing in Africa, and they are of increasing importance in aquaculture and aquaponics. Tilapia can become a problematic invasive species in new warm-water habitats such as Australia, whether deliberately or accidentally introduced, but generally not in temperate climates due to their inability to survive in cold water. Tilapia is the fourth-most consumed fish in the United States dating back to 2002. The popularity of tilapia came about due to its low price, easy preparation, and mild taste.

Recipe of the Month Lemon Pepper Parmesan Crusted Tilapia INGREDIENTS • 4 tilapia filets • 3/4 cup grated parmesan • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon lemon pepper • 1 tablespoon parsley • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1/4 cup shredded parmesan

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and mix together the grated parmesan, lemon pepper, parsley and salt. 2. Drizzle the tilapia with olive oil, then coat with the cheese mixture, pressing it in lightly with your fingers to make sure it sticks. 3. Sprinkle lightly with shredded parmesan. 4. Transfer to foil lined baking sheet. Bake until the fish is opaque in the thickest part, about 10 minutes. 5. To brown further, broil for about 5 more minutes until cheese crust is slightly crispy (watch carefully to make sure fish doesn’t burn). 6. Top with green onions and serve with lemon wedges (optional). Enjoy! Curtis Hillard 863-427-7150, ext. 4717 chef@stonegategolf.com

Christmas Decorations

By Yolanda Santiago Community Standards Manager Since we are approaching the holiday season, I wanted to post a friendly reminder below regarding the HOA guidelines for Christmas decorations. As you beautifully adorn your homes, please keep these in mind.

Christmas Decorations Section 21.9 Holiday lighting and decorations shall be permitted to be placed upon the exterior portions of the home and upon the lot in a manner permitted hereunder commencing on Thanksgiving and shall be removed not later than January 15th of the following year. What is CERT? CERT wants YOU! Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

CERT was created to respond after a major disaster (weatherrelated, man-made or terrorist-originated) when County first responders might be tied up for several hours to a few days following such a disaster. In Polk County, CERT is organized under Polk County Fire Rescue and falls under the Citizens Corps division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. CERT members perform initial damage assessment and can rescue individuals and perform triage and light first aid when paid first responders are not available. Your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team is a volunteer group of residents like you. When activated we report to the County Emergency Operations Center and coordinate locally with Taylor-Morrison, Evergreen Lifestyle Management and Vital Security. FEMA-developed standardized CERT training is free from the County and covers search and rescue, hazard/damage assessment, victim extrication, medical triage and treatment, fire suppression and psychology of disasters, all while maintaining the safety of our members. These operations are basically organized as Command Post, Search and Rescue, Fire Suppression, Medical and Logistics. You needn’t be experienced in these topics, because you will be trained (as all of us have been). We currently have women and couples among our 80+ members. When a new member completes his/her training they receive a “go-bag,” a backpack with self-protection items (e.g., hard hat, goggles, gloves), flashlight, utility shut-off tool, reflective vest and a variety of medical supplies. We conduct an annual activation exercise and do refresher skill training every month at our meetings to stay current. We also participate in advanced training sessions with Fire Rescue.

The mission of Solivita CERT is 1) To respond effectively when called upon after a major disaster; 2) To help our residents prepare for disasters; and 3) To support County and regional response needs. We try to encourage disaster preparedness of our residents— planning your response to a disaster in advance. This includes maintaining a disaster kit and knowing what to do when a disaster occurs. To accomplish this we: • Make presentations for various clubs at Solivita; • Sponsor an annual hurricane preparedness talk (May/June); • Distribute preparedness handouts via the Concierge and CERT club webpage on SolivitaHOA.com); • Provide articles (like this) in Reflections; • Smoke detector battery replacement program every spring; • Sponsor free chest compression-only CPR and AED training classes for residents (Check-Call-Compress); • Register new Solivita AEDs in the PulsePoint app database; • Lend medical equipment to residents (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.), now via the Resident-to-Resident Resource Center (R2R); and we even • Perform crowd and traffic management for major events here with our highly visible vests and hats. We would like to have many more members to adequately cover our community quickly in case of a disaster. Join us and become part of a true service organization right here in Solivita. Our meetings are on the first Monday every month at 7pm in RSF2 (see the Calendar) and open to everyone. For more information, find us on SolivitaHOA. com > Get Connected > Clubs > CERT or call Wayne at 863-514-6728.

Spa Talk: Helping Veterans & Wounded Warriors By Crystal Bethea Owner of Riviera Spa Massage

This nation’s military veterans and wounded warriors continue to fight, long after they come off the battlefields. They fight to be whole again and to reclaim their physical and psychological health. Many forms of massage and bodywork can help them do just that.

Therapeutic Massage

With its ability to meld body and mind, massage is an excellent way for veterans to reintegrate. Not only can this kind of therapeutic touch address the physical wounds, it can help bring a sense of normalcy back into daily life. “Gratifying physical experiences, such as massages ... may be experiences that patients build up that are not contaminated by trauma, and which may serve as a core of new gratifying experiences,” writes Bessel van der Kolk, author of Traumatic Stress. Research on massage and veterans, funded by the National Institutes of Health, has shown considerable promise for this hands-on therapy. An initial 2014 study found that veterans reported significant reductions in physical pain, physical tension, irritability, anxiety/worry, and depression after massage. As a result, researchers are hoping to show in Phase 2 of their study that massage could diminish our veterans’ needs for opioids for pain management, a significant concern for the U.S. Department of Defense and the veterans themselves. Many of our military personnel returning from battle zones come home less than whole. In cases of amputation, massage can help control edema, deal with neuromas, improve skin health, and loosen scar tissue. For more on this topic, read “David’s Heroes” in the November/December 2014 issue of Massage Bodywork magazine. Find it online at massageandbodyworkdigital.com/i/398416.

She says two benefits of using reflexology for clients with PTSD are: 1) It can be utilized when massage and other touch therapies cannot; and 2) The client remains clothed. “Reflexology improves the client’s sense of well-being, improves sleep, reduces anxiety, and often reduces the need for pain medications, especially following surgery or cancer treatments.” Stone says foot reflexology improves the function of all body systems. “Immediately noticeable are improvements in the flow of bioelectrical energy, blood, lymph, and nerve impulses. Reflexology also works energetically by balancing the body’s energy systems. It works in harmony with a broad spectrum of energy therapies, such as polarity therapy and Asian medicine.”

Finding Help

Other modalities that have offered relief for members of our nation’s military include breath work, Healing Touch, myofascial release, reiki, Therapeutic Touch, trauma touch therapy, and even yoga. More are being added to the list every day. If you or someone you know is a veteran or wounded warrior, and is suffering, reach out. Contact your local Veterans Affairs offices, visit the Wounded Warrior Project (www. woundedwarriorproject.org) or Comfort for America’s Uniformed Services (CAUSE; www.cause-usa.org), and make an appointment with your massage therapist or bodyworker. For more information on PTSD, visit the National Center for PTSD, US Department of National Veterans Affairs, at www.ptsd.va.gov.

Reflexology

According to author Paula Stone, reflexology is a highly effective therapy for PTSD, a condition that affects more than 5.2 million Americans every year. “Acute sustained stress erodes the very fabric of our being, while acute trauma can tear it. Whether prolonged or sudden, traumatic life experiences wound a person in body, emotions, mind, and soul, and can result in PTSD. Compassionate bodywork, including reflexology, can help heal the body and the person.”

November in Solivita

By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Floralawn has now completed three full years as Solivita’s landscaping and lawn care provider. We continue to enjoy the opportunity to work in this beautiful community. Our first year was a baptism by fire, with initial clean-up challenges and weather events to deal with like Hurricane Irma. Fortunately, the last couple of years we’ve been spared damaging storms.

Brown Patch Fungus affects many Florida turfgrasses, including St. Augustine, which grows throughout Solivita. When grass stays damp or wet for long periods of time—such as during our humid summer days—it becomes vulnerable to brown patch fungus. The fungus attacks grass blades at their base, weakening them until they can be pulled out of the ground easily. As the disease progresses, the grass turns yellow and then brown.

Mowing Schedule Changes This Month

Gray leaf spot disease is also caused by a fungus. Florida’s humid summers provide a moist environment that gray leaf spot fungus thrives in. Even though we’re into November, weather conditions still make central Florida’s turfgrasses vulnerable to disease. So we watch out for gray leaf spot, too.

This month we’re switching to our off-season bi-monthly mowing schedule. At this time of the year, the grass growth slows considerably and lawns don’t require cutting every week. Until the end of March 2020, you will see mowing crews coming around every two weeks. The detail schedule will stay the same, however. Visit the SolivitaHOA.com to see Floralawn’s winter schedule or stop by our office in the Admin Building for a chat. You can also call us at 863-225-9565.

Native Grasses

We’ve started pruning the native grasses throughout Solivita. This includes the large clumps of Fakahatchee grass that grow in the center median of Solivita Boulevard and in the common areas. We cut these grasses way back at this time of year.

November Coffee Talk

This month’s Coffee Talk is on Friday, November 22nd at 9am in the Starlite Ballroom. Come by, hang out, ask your questions, and get answers. The holiday season is upon us again. For all of us at Floralawn, I want to wish the residents of Solivita a very Happy Thanksgiving. If you’re traveling, be safe!

Watching Out for Turf Grass Diseases

Even though summer is long over, we’re keeping an eye out for common warm-weather turf grass diseases like brown patch fungus and gray leaf spot.
