Carving Out Some Fun This October
Articles
By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge This October is up for grabs and you can carve it into anything... just like a pumpkin! There is so much going on, so choose your carving tool and get to work!
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Cancer is a horrible disease and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I know people who have fought and won cancer battles and if you are going through this - stay strong and have faith! Your life is so valuable to your loved ones, so let that be your strength in any tough situation that life throws at you.
October Celebrations
In honor of National Poetry Day on October 5th, here is my poem: The world can be scary in October, but it can be beautiful too. In the end, the outcome is all up to you! You can feel blue, happy or even scared and crappy. When it’s all over just take a little nappy! World Smile Day is October 6th, so don’t forget to wear that wonderful accessory that matches any outfit and is never out of style! There are so many smiling facts, but one of them made me laugh so hard. Here it is: “It only takes two muscles to smile, but it takes 43 muscles to frown!” That explains why I smile so much! Columbus Day is a public holiday in many parts of the United States that commemorates the voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Americas in 1492. This year Columbus Day falls on Monday, October 9th, which makes for a long weekend. National Boss Day is October 16th. This is a wonderful day to prank - I mean - appreciate your boss!

HOWL-O-WEEN
Franklin’s Friends is proud to present the fourth annual HOWLO-WEEN Dog Walk-a-Thon and Canine Costume Contest on October 28th from 9am-12pm at Secret Lake Park (200 Ivey Road in Casselberry). The event will feature a leisurely dog walk, canine costume contest, adoptable dogs, pet-friendly vendors, raffles and more! $20 per person in advance; $25 at the door; FREE if you raise $100. Prizes for top individual and team fundraisers and best costumes. All proceeds benefit Franklin’s Friends, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to support central Florida animal welfare by fundraising for local nonprofit and government agencies that are dedicated to shelter/rescue, spay/neuter, and community education projects. For more information, please visit www.franklinsfriends.dojiggy. com, email franklinsfriends@gmail.com, or call 260-693-7387.
Halloween - October 31st
The best thing for adults to do around here is go to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights if you want to be scared. It’s not for young children, but it is an experience you won’t ever forget! If you’re interested, visit www.halloweenhorrornights.com for more information. Being that my daughter is too young for that event, we just dress up and go trick or treating around the neighborhood. It’s great fun and the whole family, including our corgi and close friends, gets involved. If you’re looking for a pumpkin patch close by for the kids, I have always enjoyed Green Meadows Petting Farm. Not only do the kids get to pick a pumpkin from now until November 17th, but they also get to enjoy all the animals. For more information on Green Meadows Petting Farm, visit greenmeadowsfarm.com. Hopefully you’ll chose the right tool for carving or you will have a messy October to reflect on, along with an eyesore of a carved pumpkin! Some of my carved pumpkins could be more damaging to the human eye than viewing the solar eclipse without protective eyewear! You don’t hear me complaining about it though because that mess was a lot of fun and that’s what life should be! Community Concierge 863-427-7100 sdestefano@evergreen-LM.com

What Can We Learn from Hurricane Harvey? Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
W
e recently watched as a hurricane took a long time to move past the Houston area. We should anticipate that kind of situation over central Florida. The lessons to learn are: 1. Pay attention to authorities as they warn us of a storm’s approach and speed. Beforehand monitoring can be accomplished on just about any media you choose. After the storm hits and power goes out, you need a weather radio to stay informed—what is happening, what to do, what not to do. Evacuation routes in Florida are very limited since the whole state may be in the path of a storm and you must leave the entire state to find a safe haven. Evacuees will saturate I-95, I-75 and Florida’s Turnpike - the main routes. 2. A storm can bring a lot of rain that leads to flooding, cutting off many otherwise plausible routes of travel. In 2004 that included Johnson Avenue (flooded) and Poinciana Boulevard (washed out). We all know how congested this area can become with just one road closed. 3. With a lot of water, transportation is disrupted. Not only can you not move, but neither can first responders and delivery trucks servicing local retail outlets, providing the food and supplies we all need.
|4|
4. Along with a power outage comes the question of how do I meet the essential need for food. Eat up what’s going to spoil in the refrigerator and freezer. Be prepared—keep at least 3 days of food on hand for everyone in your household (including pets). Keep a box in your pantry with canned goods and other non-perishables as well as augmented with fresh fruits and vegetables. You can heat food on a camp stove or gas grill—just don’t do it inside the house or under roof (e.g., protected lanai) to avoid carbon monoxide. 5. Recovery may take a long time—days, weeks, or months? Is your insurance up to date? Do you have the policy information protected from water? If the above observations are not enough reason to motivate you to prepare ahead of time (over a few days of hurricane warning), what will you do if the event is a tornado that strikes without any warning in the middle of the night—no warning, no time to get in food supplies and water and no chance to evacuate? Only you can assess what your preparations should be. This information is brought to you by the Solivita Community Emergency Response Team.

Special Training + Quick Action = A Precious Life Saved Courtesy of the Solivita Travel Club’s edition of On the Go, Summer 2017 Try to picture the following and then decide what you believe you would do if faced with a similar life-threatening emergency: You are seated in Mosaics attending the final trip orientation meeting for your upcoming Colorado Rail Adventure. You and the others are eagerly looking forward to this journey, as your visions of trains and majestic mountains are interrupted when you hear, “He fell off the chair!” This situation quickly turns urgent when it is determined this man has more than slipped off his chair. According to sources, he has collapsed on the floor; he is not breathing; he has no pulse; and the color of his skin is pale blue. This is no drill. This is for real. What would you do when minutes count and a life hangs in the balance? Fortunately, some at the meeting had taken CPR and AED training and that lifesaving knowledge kicked in quickly. Someone was instructed to call 9-1-1 for immediate assistance and an ambulance. Others were urged to locate the nearest AED in the building. While waiting for emergency medical help to arrive, trained members quickly
applied necessary CPR and AED skills. One club member claimed teamwork and special training, along with knowing what to do and how to do it, were critical in this emergency. The most important part of this story is that this member not only survived, but is doing extremely well, according to one source. Also important is that this real-life event highlights the value of CPR and AED training. We ask again, would you be prepared to calmly and efficiently help someone in time of need? In a continuing effort to further broaden our community’s AED and CPR efforts, readers are urged (1) to support fundraising efforts for this program and (2) to sign up for a training session when available. We never know when we may need those important skills in an emergency. Let’s all be prepared just in case. Editor’s Note - All names have been omitted at the request of the individuals involved. Contact Michael Weitz of Solivita’s CERT, at 863-438-2331 or mnwjd@aol.com, to arrange classes for residents. You can also contact the Solivita Resource Center at solivitaR2R@gmail.com or 863-236-9973 for additional information on AEDs.

He currently teaches government at Valencia College. Course Description: Ivanhoe is the story of one of the remaining Saxon noble families at a time when the English nobility was overwhelmingly Norman. It follows the Saxon protagonist, Wilfrid of Ivanhoe, who is out of favor with his father owing to his courting the Lady Rowena and for his allegiance to the Norman king Richard I of England. The story is set in 1194, after the end of the Third Crusade, when many of the Crusaders were still returning to Europe. The legendary Robin Hood, initially under the name of Locksley, is also a character in the story, as are his ‘merry men,’ including Friar Tuck. The character that Scott gave to Robin Hood in Ivanhoe helped shape the modern notion of this figure as a cheery noble outlaw.

Breast Cancer Awareness By Sue Quattrochi Relay For Life Event Lead
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Pink is everywhere! All around you will see ribbons, shirts, hats, and miscellaneous items displaying awareness for Breast Cancer. By wearing PINK we are showing support for the generations of family and friends who have battled and SURVIVED this disease. Our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, and granddaughters, as well as our fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons are the real reason the world is being seen through “pink glasses” showing support. We want to raise awareness that this is a disease that can affect anyone. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live, your ethnic background, if you’re rich, poor, young or old. Everyone is at risk! Awareness is the most powerful weapon we have to ensure that this disease is found early. Ladies, make sure you get your mammogram or CT scan. Show your support of Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing a little PINK in Solivita throughout October. RELAY FOR LIFE of Solivita is having its 1st BRA HA-HA Bazaar showing over 50 decorated bras donated by clubs and residents that will make you smile with laughter. You will experience the stories and support that only a “BRA HA-HA” can convey. The American Cancer Society’s National Mammography Day is October 20th. Remember, AWARENESS is the KEY to PREVENTION.
