customs for me? Could you possibly hide it under your robes for me?”
Have a Laugh
When they got to customs, she let the priest go first. The official asked, “Father, do you have anything to declare?”
And now, since it has been a while, I want to share a joke with you that Dick Fullerton, a Solivita resident, sent to me (the author is unknown). Don’t worry, my Mom approved it!!! In Catholic schools students are taught that lying is a sin. Instructors are also advised that a bit of imagination is OK to express the truth differently without lying. The following is a perfect example of this teaching: Getting a Hairdryer Through Customs An attractive young woman on a flight from Ireland asked the priest beside her, “Father, may I ask a favor of you?”
“I would love to help you my dear; but, I must warn you, I will not lie!” “With your honest face, Father, I’m sure no one will question you!”
“From the top of my head down to my waist, I have nothing to declare.” The official thought this answer a little strange, so he asked, “And what do you have to declare from your waist down to the floor?” “I have a marvelous instrument that has been designed for use on women, but which, to date, remains unused.” Roaring with laughter, the official said, “Go ahead, Father. Next, please!”
“Of course child. What can I do for you?” I hope you had a good laugh! Enjoy a beautiful Solivita day! “I bought my mother an expensive hair dryer for her birthday. It is unopened, but well over the customs limits and I’m afraid they’ll confiscate it. Is there any way you could carry it through

Let’s Switch It Up!
By Jana Malik Director of Activities Have you ever redecorated or rearranged furniture in a room or a closet in your home? Do you enjoy the thrill of seeing your space in a new light? That’s true for the team and me, in more ways than one. No matter how many Valentine’s Day or holiday events we’ve done, we have no greater joy than to exhibit the Ballroom in a new color scheme and décor. You may regularly hear me say, “We don’t show the same décor twice.” If you have lived in Solivita for more than a few years, you may also notice that events, shows and entertainment are being switched around for a new feel that we hope is appealing to the many different cultures, ages, and tastes of our Solivita residents.
Here are a Couple of Other Things we are Switching Around:
When clubs are having events in the newly renovated Ballroom, the ONLY acceptable tape to use on the walls, stage and doors, is painters tape. We have recently switched to using blue exterior painters tape as it has a better grip. All other tapes will ruin the paint and stains.
Important Notices for Everyone Regarding the Day of the Solivita Pub Crawl Event on Friday, September 6th: • The Marketplace Bistro will close at 4pm.
• Village Drive will close to non-event attendees and vehicle
traffic from the Ballroom to the Pro Shop roundabout from 5pm-10:30pm. • All rooms in the Waterfront Galleries and the
Mediterranean Skyline Rooms will be closed at 5pm.
• Club Posters hung in the Ballroom and Riviera Spa &
Fitness Center (RSF) will be rotated between facilities, in no special order, two to three times a year. By doing this, residents who use only one or the other facility will have an opportunity to see all of the posters. • DJ entertainment at Curbside Cuisine Food Truck nights
will be rotated. If you are a DJ interested in entertaining, email me for more information. No bands permitted.
Do You Have the Right Tape?
Quick fun fact about the Activities Office before getting to business. When it comes to tape, we pretty much have every kind for the assorted events and projects we do in-house: duct, packing, caution, electrical, floral, thin and thick double sided, blue, beige, gaffer, scotch and Velcro.
• The Riviera Spa & Fitness Center will be open during
normal hours.
Chance for Clubs to Receive Proceeds from Holiday Charity Show
For the seventh year, the Activities Office has applications for clubs to receive proceeds from the December 2019 Holiday Show to donate to their charity of choice. Last year, six clubs divided up the ticket sales and received $884 each for their charity! The show for this year is a comedic musical play called Home for the Holidays. The application form is available in the Activities Office or on SolivitaHOA.com under the Lifestyles tab and then select Lifestyles and Fitness Forms. Deadline to apply is Friday, September 27th. It’s way more fun to switch things around and to keep the party going!

The R2R Resource Center is Here for You! September Small Group Workshops: Understanding Our Cellphones
Beginning in September, the Resource Center will conduct a series of small group workshops on that ever-present accessory... our cell phones. Three September workshops will focus on cell phone basics and are designed for beginners or those who are still confused about what they can do and how to do it.
Workshop Topics & Dates
• “In The Market” on Tuesday, September 3rd at 10am in the Gator Room: This workshop is designed for people who are looking to buy their first smart phone or upgrade to a more sophisticated model. It will cover Apple vs. Android and also look at the various cell phone providers in the area. • “Out of the Box” on Monday, September 9th at 10am in the Gator Room: This is designed for smart phone owners who are still learning the basics...from putting together a contact list, to customizing a home screen, to understanding what all those icons, sounds and messages mean. • “Totally Confused” on Friday, September 20th at 10am in the Gator Room: This workshop is aimed at smart phone users who are using their phones and still have questions, problems and glitches. We’ll try to help you understand what’s wrong and how to fix it.
Reflections | September 2019 |
Due to these workshops being small-group sessions, seating is limited. If necessary, R2R will schedule additional sessions at a later date. All R2R Workshops are free to Solivita residents, but advance registration is requested. Please reserve your spot by calling 863-236-9973 or email SolivitaR2R@gmail.com. Intermediate and advanced level workshops will be announced soon.
October Workshops
Coming up in October, R2R has two outstanding workshops scheduled: “Volunteer Opportunities Outside of Solivita” and “Our Furry Companions: Pets in Solivita.” Check the October Reflections for additional information.
Kid’s Corner
Sherlock Holmes has arrived on the children’s bookshelf in the Resource Center. This is a book for middle school graders; however, many other books are available for your grandchildren in the Resource Center Children’s Library (located in the R2R office above the Bistro).

License Plate Recognition Tips & Guest Passes By Vickie Kellogg Membership Coordinator When driving up to the gates, you will soon see a white line across the roadway. It is important to wait behind the line if there is a vehicle in front of you.
The gate arm can only open for one car at-a-time. Once the first car has passed, the gate arm will start to descend. If the camera has already read your plate and if you are following closely behind another car, the arm will not go back up until the vehicle is reversed so the camera can read the plate again.
Gate Protocol
1. Proceed past the white line only if the arm is down, or descending when you approach the gate. 2. If there is a vehicle in front of you, wait at the white line for the arm to start to descend before proceeding.
The best way to make sure the gate will open is to wait behind the white line if there is a car in front of you. Once the arm starts to descend, you may proceed. No need to wait for the arm to be completely down. Your vehicle is also at risk of damage if the arm comes down on top of your car because you didn’t wait your turn. We have replicated this problem several times with the camera techs following a security vehicle. After the test, I looked at the cameras and found that cars following closely behind others will cause this issue making it seem like the camera did not read the plate. It actually does read the plate, but unless the arm is descending it will not go up – or stay up. Another issue we seem to be having are cars speeding up to the gates. The cameras work best when the car isn’t speeding past the camera. Please slow down a little and give the camera time to read the plate.
Changes to the Procedure to Purchase Visitor Passes
We have some great news! We have a new computer program in place for Visitor Passes that will make this process much easier. On the Membership Gate website, register -- ALL -- of your visitors (including children 18 years and under) and there will be no need to be with your visitors when they purchase
|8|
passes. This includes residents not in Solivita when there are visitors in your home!
New Procedure
1. Add all visitors, including minors, to your access list on the Membership Gate website. This will authorize the purchase of Visitor Passes without the owner/resident being present. 2. Visitors will continue to purchase passes at either The Palms or Riviera Spa & Fitness Center (RSF). 3. A FitWell team member will assist with registering the visitor(s) using an iPad. 4. The last name or address of the owner/resident will be used to search for the registered visitor. 5. If the visitor is on the access list, they will be able to complete the Informed Consent form directly on the iPad. 6. Adults obtaining Visitor Passes will sign the form on the iPad for themselves. Any minors that are purchasing passes with them, will be added to their record. Once signed, the form is automatically filed in the owner/resident’s record. 7. It isn’t necessary for the entire party to be present when purchasing Visitor Passes, but all ADULT visitors must sign the Informed Consent form to be issued a pass. Additionally, EVERYONE in the party, including minors (three years and older), must have a pass in their possession when using Club facilities. 8. Visitors NOT on the Membership Gate website will be required to have an owner/resident present to purchase Visitor Passes.
Please contact Solivita Membership if you have not registered on the Gate website by emailing us at SolivitaMembership@ Evergreen-LM.com or call 863-866-8690.

But often there isn’t one right answer – there may be several answers, or just some least worst answers – and the individual must choose between them.
This course deals with some of the issues we have to face today, either with our own personal dilemmas or with societal dilemmas. Fridays, October 25th, November 1st and 8th The Palms • 10:30am Tuition: $20 per student Professor: Dr. Ken “Jerusalem Jones” Hanson has been mesmerizing audiences for years. From Mediterranean lands to Hawaii, and places in between, Ken’s electrifying, witty, and “out of the box” Dr. Ken Hanson speaking style has made him a frequent commentator on the History Channel (“Banned from the Bible” and “Ancient Aliens”). A master of multi-media presentation, Ken regularly slips into character, to drive home his inspiring and entertaining messages. A natural storyteller, Dr. Hanson has, through his books, articles, and media appearances, made a rich treasure of ancient texts accessible to everyone. Course Description: Long ago, pieces of leather, inscribed by learned sages, were rolled into scrolls, to be read and studied only by a select few. For reasons unknown, they were hidden in mountainous desert caves. On a fateful day in 1947, an Arab lad was searching for his lost goat, he stumbled upon what was to become the most important archaeological find of the 20th century – ancient parchments, depicting the life and hopes of an unknown Judean sect. Follow the adventure saga of Dr. Ken Hanson, as he recounts his odyssey from Chicago, as a wide-eyed undergraduate, to Jerusalem, as an inspired scholar, seeking out the mysteries of the 2,000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls. Changing costume on stage, he morphs into a host of characters, to bring the Scrolls to life.

Here to Help
By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge There are times I am unable to pick up the phone as I may be busy assisting someone else. So, please leave me a message and I will contact you back as soon as I can! Solivita is a large community, but all of you are just as important and all of you deserve assistance. Apart from that, I am here from 9am5pm anyway, so you may as well keep me busy. It’s my job to help you and I enjoy it! I have listed some interesting things below regarding important dates, frequently asked questions (FAQs), and ideas of things to do in September.
Important Dates This Month
Labor Day: Monday, September 2nd Labor Day is celebrated at separate times of the year in different countries. Most countries celebrate it on May 1st, but Australia, Canada, Bahamas and a few others vary. Here in the U.S., we celebrate on the first Monday in September. Whatever the date, workers worldwide appreciate that special day set aside for them. I, for one, will appreciate being able to sleep in an extra day!
are on a different feeder source. Therefore, the hospital can get power way before we do. Q) What if you have a streetlight out in front of your home? A) You can report it to our Security Manager Madalyn Colon by dialing 407-978-1587 or email her at madalync@vitalsecurity. com. She will need the address closest to the streetlight as well as the number on the pole if you can get it safely. For hazardous conditions, please stay away from the pole and call it in to Duke Energy at 800228-8485. Please do not report it directly to Duke Energy unless it is an emergency because it will go in their system multiple times and the last person to call overrides the first person who called it in.
Ideas of Things To Do This Month

National Grandparents Day: Sunday, September 8th Grandparents are wonderful! They are there to FaceTime, bake cookies and just share special memories with their grandkids. Most importantly though, they can always hand the grandkids back to their parents.
This Month’s FAQs & Answers

So many of us forget how important our skin is to our body. This system protects our body from environmental stress and contains connective tissues, vessels, glands, sensory nerves, etc. The skin is the largest organ in the body. About 4 years ago, I really started doing some research on the integumentary system and how it’s heavily taxed by an accumulation of toxic exposure. There are on-going studies performed all over the world as to the effects that hazardous substances have on the body, both internal and external.
Today & Tonight Magazine
We Didn’t Realize
Of course, if you want more ideas of things to do close by, you can always pick up a Today & Tonight magazine at the Concierge Desk. They normally come in within the first week of every month. The magazine focuses on Polk County and has a restaurant spotlight, concert calendar, and a calendar that covers festivals, expos, arts, crafts, antique fairs, car shows, markets, concerts and theatre, charity events, golf tournaments and sports. Sometimes the most important thing you can do for a person is listen to their problems. You may be left totally speechless after you’ve heard what they have to say and that’s okay too. The important thing is that the person was able to talk about it. You gave them the ability to get it off their chest. In today’s world, you really must put forth the effort to listen to people. We are all way too busy and have so much going on that we forget to communicate with the ones we care about. Do we know what’s going on in our friends’ and family’s lives? Have we taken the time to listen to their problems? Just remember that you cannot help anyone without listening to them first. Community Concierge 863-427-7100 sdestefano@evergreen-LM.com

Did you know that a little over 70% of all our blood vessels in the body are micro-vessels leading from our skin? Only about 14.5% make up our veins, and our arteries about 12%. With this in mind, I want you to consider your day to day, morning routine. We take a shower with fragrant soaps (according to FDA trade secrets, the word fragrance is a mask of up to 500 chemicals that increase the risk of cancer), shampoo our hair with products containing sodium lauryl sulfate (which is a product used to degrease floors and cars), brush our teeth with fluoride that disrupt thyroid and hormone function (also says to call poison control if swallowed) and we apply deodorant under our arms with aluminum as an active ingredient (linked to brain disorders, autism, breast cancer).
Steps at a Time
Now, I don’t want you to think by any means I’m suggesting we live in a bubble. We can however, bring awareness to our families and friends to encourage them to make a switch. The first thing you can do is to pay closer attention to your own body, to see what it’s trying to tell you. Then in your free time, research toxic side effects and signs to look for. Last step, so you don’t overwhelm yourself, replace one product at a time as you run out. Next thing you know…complete transformation and a healthier family.

Fall is Almost Here!
By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn Here we are again, looking toward fall and the coming holiday season. Does anyone else wonder where the year went?
Summer Tasks
At Floralawn, the advent of this autumn means we’ve completed our third summer as Solivita’s landscaping and lawn care provider. We’ve learned a lot over the past few years and continue to enjoy working in this beautiful community. Making residents happy by keeping turf, plants, and trees maintained and healthy gives us joy and satisfaction. As usual, our summer tasks were dominated by keeping turf and shrub growth under control. Our mowing and detail crews worked very hard. Florida’s crazy weather dynamics keep us on our toes. Summertime rains can result in soggy ground that stresses the grass. Summer days without rain can result in dry ground that stresses the grass. Our crews stay vigilant to weather fluctuations, running irrigation when it’s dry and turning irrigation off when there are prolonged days of rain.
Watching for Fungal Turf Diseases
Besides monitoring grass for dryness or overwatering, we also keep an eye out for fungal diseases. Heat and humidity combine to create environments that fungi thrive in. We watch out for
| 18 |
occurrences of Brown Patch, Gray Leaf Spot, Fairy Ring Fungus, and Take All Root Rot. These are all fungal diseases that attack turfgrass (especially St. Augustine grass, which grows throughout Solivita). We use cultural controls (proper mowing and irrigation practices) and chemical controls (fungicides and herbicides).
September Tasks
September tasks are mostly a continuation of summer tasks since the heat hasn’t let up yet. Summer rains will be slowing down this month, so we’ll continue to adjust the watering schedules as necessary. Mowing and detail crews are still providing weekly service.
September Love Bugs
This month we will endure the second love bug season of the year. If you’ve lived in Florida for a while, you know that love bugs come out in swarms every May and September. Try a wet dryer sheet to remove them from your windshield.
Coffee Talk
My next Coffee Talk is on September 20th at 9am in the Starlite Ballroom. Got questions related to landscaping or Floralawn services? Bring them, and we’ll do our best to get them answered. If you can’t make it to the Coffee Talk, feel free to call us at 863225-9565 or stop by our office in the Admin Building for a chat.

Committee Roundup
[ Department] Articles
Solivita Lifestyles Activities Committee (SLAC) Later this year, on October 18th, Activities is having a 50th Anniversary Woodstock Concert out on the Sales Model Park lawn. What’s the perfect souvenir to take home from an event like this? A memorabilia show T-shirt! For an additional $15, concert goers will have a choice of two different T-shirts that will both represent the 50-year anniversary. The first choice is a more modern graphic on a red T-shirt, and the second choice is a retro graphic on a rainbow tie-dye T-shirt. Check out the T-shirt designs below*, the opportunity to pre-order and more information about this event on the back of the calendar insert in this month’s edition of Reflections.
*Tie-dye shirt colors may be slightly different than the image shown dependant on shirt company.
The SLAC Committee discussed the New Year’s Eve Parties, and the ever growing popularity for that event. We have decided to add the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center (RSF) as a fourth location! RSF will be assigned tables, but dinner, dessert and coffee will be served buffet style. There will be a DJ playing from the second floor of RSF, so you’ll have plenty of space to dance on the first floor. Activities will also be expanding to BOTH sides of the Village Center bridge, each having DJ entertainment, plenty of seating, and attendees can roam anywhere they please.
Reflections | September 2019 |
The SLAC Committee discussed a new Cabaret Dinner theme for Summer 2020: Disney! You’ll be able to watch your favorite Disney classic songs come to life, sing along, and enjoy a meal all at the same time! Would you partake in this magical dining experience? After the June 2019 Activities events brainstorming committee meeting with SLAC, they’ve brought back some fan favorites, and have also added some new exciting event ideas that have been approved for the 2020 Solivita Activities calendar. Look for these dates in future Reflections. Here are just some of the events to come next year: • Silent Disco Dance in most areas of the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center • Savannah Jack Show • Breakfast for Dinner Pajama Dance • Stomp Similar Show • Mermaid Cocktail Party • Cinco de Mayo Street Party • Havana Nights Dance • Entertainment Showcase • Great Pumpkin Patch Parade & Street Party • Solivita’s 20th Birthday Party • Chef’s Pumpkin Spice Cooking Demo To give feedback, suggestions, ideas or comments on any Activities event, email us at LifestylesAdvisoryCommittee@ SolivitaHOA.com. We’d love to hear from you!
SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of available time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs.

Solivita Residents Save Lives! Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team
Several years ago, Solivita CERT, in conjunction with Polk County Fire Rescue, began to offer Check-Call-Compress classes (compression-only CPR and AED training) here in our community. Since those beginnings, five people in Solivita who experienced Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) were successfully resuscitated before EMTs arrived on scene. This is five out of five occurrences! SCA mostly affects people in Solivita’s 55+ age group. It strikes without prior warning and can happen anytime— while playing pickleball or golf or even less-active pursuits like attending a club meeting in the Village. (Those activities are where they have occurred.)
Classes
Nearly 3,000 residents have taken this hands-on course. They have the skills to save a life in a situation like this. If you haven’t taken this free class, watch for announcements of upcoming classes or contact Michael Weitz to put your name on a waiting list. Michael can be reached at 863-438-2331 or at mnwjd@ aol.com. The class will teach you how to recognize cardiac arrest, what to do next, how to provide efficient and effective chest compressions and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) before EMTs arrive. Until EMTs take over, immediate chest compressions keep blood flowing and an AED can restart the heartbeat.
AED Locations
Do you know we have over 60 AEDs around Solivita? But where are they? You’ve probably seen them around the Village buildings, The Palms and Freedom Park, but many more are in our neighborhoods. A list by neighborhood is maintained on SolivitaHOA.com under Docs & Info > AEDs. Better than that
| 20 |
list, you can install a free app on your smartphone that will show a map of your location and the nearby AEDs. The app is called PulsePoint AED (yellow). This app works wherever you are, not just in Solivita. Nationwide over 83,000 AEDs are registered in the PulsePoint database.
AED Program
Speaking of AEDs, how did they get there? The AEDs in our neighborhoods are the direct result of efforts by resident Stanley Dillard and the Solivita Showtime Entertainers. Their goal is to have one within a few minutes of every home in Solivita. You see them now on posts around our neighborhoods. If you as an individual, or a group of your neighbors or a club would like to donate money toward the purchase and installation of more neighborhood AEDs, please contact Stanley at 863-427-4480 or at spdillard.sr@gmail.com. Since 2015, Solivita Showtime Entertainers has sponsored a show to raise money for more AEDs. These fundraising shows increase awareness of the need to learn CPR and how to use AEDs while providing entertainment. Stanley has taken on a personal mission to acquire and locate AEDs all around Solivita and Poinciana. In summary, if you haven’t taken the 2-hour Check-Call-Compress class, it’s time to do so. You, too, can SAVE A LIFE. Make sure your friends learn as well, so they can save you! Also, make plans to attend the next Solivita Showtime Entertainers show in the spring.

Cancer Ribbons Raise Awareness
[ Department] Articles
Submitted By Sue Quattrochi Relay For Life Event Co-Lead Colors and months for cancer ribbons are a bright and meaningful way to raise awareness. Ribbon colors are determined by nationally recognized, non-profit organizations that provide support, education, and awareness for individual cancers. Cancer ribbons are simple loops of ribbon that people wear to show their support for people who have cancer or to spread awareness about the disease. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation began handing out pink ribbons to participants at its Race for the Cure. In 1992, the charity collaborated with Self magazine and Estée Lauder to promote the pink ribbon nationwide, and the first cancer awareness ribbon was born. After the high-profile launch of the pink ribbon, other nationallyrecognized cancer support charities began to choose cancer ribbon colors. There are hundreds of different colors, patterns and color combinations for Awareness Ribbons. Today, people wear these ribbons to raise awareness, encourage preventative
testing, and show support for loved ones with cancer. Check out the calendar below for the Cancer Awareness Months and their associated ribbon colors.
Relay Events
September is the start of the fiscal year for RELAY FOR LIFE. The American Cancer Society needs our help in their support of awareness. As we prepare for Relay’s Signature Event, “RALLY FOR THE CURE,” on April 5, 2020, be proud to wear a ribbon or ribbons in HOPE FOR THE CURE. Wednesday, September 18th is an open Relay Team Meeting in the Art Gallery at 6:30pm for all Relay Teams and their members. Also, information will be available regarding becoming a Team for Relay For Life and how to register. Your support will make a difference!
