I do want to take a moment to thank our newest committee, the Solivita Club Committee (SCC) which started in late 2020. This committee has helped my team continue our success in keeping Solivita a beautiful community. This past year, the SCC has been very beneficial in planning, designing, and advising on several Club projects. Below are a few of the projects that the committee has assisted with over the last year:
Football season is upon us and it’s my favorite time of the year. As most of you may know, I am a University of Florida graduate and football season ticket holder with the Gators. Some people believe I even bleed orange and blue. As much as I am committed to being a true Gators fan, my team and I are even more committed to keeping Solivita the beautiful community everyone is proud to live in. We could not do this without the help of our many volunteers. Thank you to our volunteers for all your time and talents.
Next year we will have a couple openings on the committee. If you are interested in being a part of this hard-working, dynamic committee, please visit SolivitaHOA.com > click on the “Lifestyles” icon > click on the “Solivita Club Committee” icon > download the “Solivita Club Advisory Committee Application” (direct website link: solivitahoa.com/pdf.php?lFileID=76656 ) to complete your application. Applications can be dropped off to the Club Manager, Sheri Wollschlager, or emailed to SCC@ SolivitaHOA.com. The deadline to apply is Monday, October 3rd. After the deadline, the SCC will review all applications and set up interviews with potential new SCC members. The plan is to finish the interviews in October and invite the new members to the November meeting to get them started in the process. New committee members will begin their two-year term in January, 2023.

The SCC is comprised of homeowners who advise and consult the management company on matters pertaining to the Solivita Club program and facilities. The Club program includes Activities, Fitness, Recreation, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Pools, all Amenity Rooms and Resident Clubs. A liaison between the management company and the community, SCC serves to make recommendations and/or provide key information and materials to the management company by representing the sentiments of the community at large.

I do love and respect bees, not only because they pollinate 15 billion dollars’ worth of crops each year and they can tell time, but also because I could not imagine life without honey! I bet you did not know there was a female “Pooh Bear.” It is time to fill that honey jar, so get buzzing and make your time count for something.

After traversing through Bonita Canyon, they located a home with a “muy bonita jardin.” The lovely yard of Ed and GM Fernandez at 1308, transplants from Miami, has unique contrasting colors of plants throughout and it takes a minute or two to really appreciate the work and total palette unless you stop and take it all in. Ed oversaw the Pan American Orchid Society for many years and still has a beautiful assortment. Take a ride and check them out. Our secret judges will be out and about looking for the next gem.

The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Check out the stats in previous months airing on Community Channel 732. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. A driver is six times more likely to have an accident when traveling at 25% above the posted speed limit. Speeding reduces the amount of time to avoid a crash and increases the severity of a crash once it occurs.

person who was dead. No pulse. No respirations. No response to stimulus. Having just taken the class, I knew what to do. I felt in control. We continued compressions, and then used the AED as we had learned in the class.
The following is a firsthand account of “Check, Call, Compress” being used to save a life right here in Solivita, shared with us by one of the rescuers. It happens every year. Solivitans are given the free opportunity to learn lifesaving skills. DON’T MISS IT! If you, your friend, or spouse need emergency help, YOU or one of your neighbors will have been trained to save a life. THIS IS IMPORTANT! I had taken advantage of our free Check, Call, Compress (CCC) classes at The Palms. If you think, “I’ve taken CPR in the past, so I’m all set,” then YOU’RE WRONG! Times have changed, techniques have changed, COVID changed a lot in health care, and your skills need to be updated. In the class, which is less than two hours long (not a huge commitment) you will learn from live demonstration, from the instructors, videos, handson practice on the mannequins, doing the actual compressions, and how to use an AED. Two weeks after my class, it happened! I heard someone yell, “Get the AED.” This was just like in the video I had seen earlier that month. Already, some of our educated Solivitans had initiated the most important steps in saving a life - chest compressions. That was reassuring to me because someone else knew what to do (call for help) and someone else knew where the AED was! Once the EMTs arrived, they assured us that he was stable enough to be transported to the hospital. Once that happened, I felt exhausted. I felt a mix of euphoria, along with some anxiety. I needed a few days to let this all sink in and mentally, give myself time to emotionally recover. It can still surface in my mind. We cannot stress enough, to all residents, to prepare yourselves for what may happen in front of you next week. Classes are always FREE, and what you learn CAN save a life. It’s good to know some of our neighbors are updated, and I hope if this happens to me, they will be there to possibly save MY life. Please register for a CCC class - be an example to others!
Re-Considering
Our fast-paced, high-tech existence over the last few decades has taken a toll on the civility in civil society. In this hurry-up world, informality has become the norm. A “Sunday Best” outfit may now include flip flops instead of high heels for women and a golf shirt instead of a dress shirt and tie for men. The increasingly informal dress code has been mirrored by an increasing informality in the way that we speak to, and interact with, one another. (When was the last time someone other than a service person called you “Sir” or “Ma’am”?)
The entire month of September is National Courtesy Month ! Pardon me for pointing it out, but we all seem to have gotten less, rather than more, courteous of late. Courtesy is about manners and respect. Courtesy builds rapport and enhances relationship. It greases the wheels of life.
C3 Wellness Spa info@rivieraspamassage.com407-914-9168
People seem to be more self-absorbed and less likely to monitor their behaviors to accommodate the needs and wants of others around them. If you’ve seen the ad on TV where the “clueless” young man, nose in his cell phone, first walks past a man on crutches and then goes out the door, letting it slam in the face of the injured one, rather than holding it open for him, then proceeds to walk over spilled mail pieces on the sidewalk, rather than stopping to help the mail carrier collect them. Finally, still absorbed in his phone, walks into the street, directly in front of an oncoming car, you’ll know what I mean. The clueless phone fanatic gives the driver a “what the heck?” gesture and points to his phone, as if to say, “Can’t you see I’m busy here?”– as if his preferences are paramount. This ad makes me laugh every time I see it (it’s promoting the self-braking system on a new car), even though it obviously highlights rudeness. The absurdity of the phone-obsessed man’s behavior points out, in a humorous way, not only the value of having a self-braking car, but also the trend in today’s society to choose self-absorption over courtesy.

I invite you to join me on Wednesday, September 21st from 2pm-3pm in RSF2, for an honest and respectful group discussion regarding American’s beliefs that rudeness has increased in society over the past 20 years. Share your thoughts about how consciously choosing courtesy, instead, can make a positive difference. Take a “Common Courtesy Quiz” and explore the implications for yourself and others in our Solivita community.

This trend has been growing for a while. The September 11, 2001, attacks caused people to become more polite…. but for only a brief period; unfortunately, it didn’t last. Why are we experiencing such an uptick in the pervasiveness of discourtesy in American life? Experts say that crowding and the anonymity provided by modern forms of communication, such as email, social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), and the general obsession with cell phones encourages rudeness. The media’s depiction of rudeness as acceptable, and even stylish, also promotes bad behavior. More people than ever before seem to feel “entitled.” Not everyone, of course, follows the trend. Older adults, in general, brought up in a slower, less tech-based world, tend, in general to still value courtesy. Here are some ways you can practice bringing back courtesy, not just in September, National Courtesy Month, but all year long:

September Happenings BY BRAD THOMPSON BRANCH MANAGER, FLORALAWN
As we all know, the summer heat is still blazing in September, so our tasks for this month are similar to what they have been for the last few. We continue monitoring the weather and adjusting watering schedules as the summer rains abate. Our mowing and detailing crews will still service the community on a weekly basis.
Floralawn is celebrating the completion of our sixth summer providing landscaping and lawn care to the Solivita community. We love what we do because of every Solivita resident who is happy with their landscaping and because we enjoy maintaining the turf, plants, and trees to keep this community looking beautiful. We continue to feel honored to work in this vibrant Likecommunity.everysummer, the focus of this past one was controlling turf and shrub growth. Our hard-working crews stayed on top of mowing and detailing all summer long. We stay attuned to the unpredictability of Florida’s weather to keep your lawns looking great. Grass can be stressed by soggy and dry ground alike, so we adjust our watering based on the forecast. If there are consecutive days of rain, we keep the irrigation turned off and run it during dry periods.
Summer Work
The heat and humidity of Florida summers also contribute to environments in which fungal diseases flourish. We watch out for signs of diseases like Fairy Ring Fungus, Gray Leaf Spot, Take All Root Rot, and Brown Patch, all of which attack the turfgrasses that grow in Solivita. We use both chemical controls (herbicides and fungicides) and cultural controls (appropriate irrigation and mowing practices) to keep these fungal diseases in check.
