Saving Valuable Papers Submitted by the Solivita CERT Team

If a severe storm came through, the roof could be taken right off your house. If that happened, would your important papers be there afterwards? Would they be usable or readable? While no one expects these things to happen, they are a reality in Florida during hurricane season and year round if a tornado hits.

The Types of Papers to Consider Include: • • • • • • •

Insurance policies (house, car, life, medical) Bank account information Credit cards and passports Health records (doctors, prescriptions) Bills (and loans) Important online account user names and passwords Contact information for all the above, as well as family and friends

While you may think such paperwork would be right in your lower desk drawer where you file it, what if your desk isn’t even there? The stronger categories of both hurricanes and tornadoes can pick up large vehicles weighing much more than any piece of furniture. If the roof is gone what will the water damage do to your records?

NEW F&B HOURS OF OPERATION

Monday-Thursday Lunch: 11am-4pm Dinner: 4pm-8pm Friday-Sunday Breakfast: 8am-11am Lunch: 11am-4pm Dinner: 4pm-8pm

Monday-Saturday Breakfast: 8am-11am Lunch: 11am-4pm Dinner: 4pm-8pm Sunday Breakfast: 8am-11am Lunch: 11am-3pm

Here’s What You Can Do:

• Make copies of the important pages of these documents; • Put them in zip-lock bags (or other sealable container) and take them with you (in your disaster kit—you have one, don’t you?); • Take photos of the interior of your home showing the furniture, shelves of books or collectibles, as well as the contents of your closets. These photos will be useful to establish a claim with your insurance company.

This knowledge could make recovery from a major household disaster much less traumatic. Don’t rely solely on your smart phone to record the data above—it could be compromised or out of battery when you need the information. Even if you store your information in the “cloud,” internet access may be unavailable for some time. These recommendations are provided by your Solivita Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to help you be prepared. For more information on CERT, attend one of our monthly meetings (see the calendar in Reflections).

SPEED ENFORCEMENT IN SOLIVITA The HOA, Security, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office receive multiple complaints of speeding each week from residents. The Sheriff’s Office has been asked for their assistance in speed enforcement. Receiving a speeding ticket is not only financially costly, but can lead to much more serious results. Check out the slide on the Community Channel to see the latest stats from the Sheriff’s Office.

Owner, Riviera Spa Massage Health and vitality at any age is one of our core messages and one we believe in passionately here at the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center. Our professionals would agree that the spa is an excellent place to treat the entire body. Massage and exercise improves the appearance and condition of skin, and tones muscle tissue, thanks to improved local circulation. In addition to my clients wanting to remain vital and active in Solivita, I recognized the increasing desire to want to look as young as they feel. This is why we offer minimally invasive procedures to avoid the downtime and drastic changes in appearance associated with plastic surgery. We work to prevent cellular damage, dryness, and wrinkles. Making Wonderful Memories in September By Shelley Destefano Community Concierge

With all the remodeling, it has been brought to my attention that several residents don’t know where the Administration and Lifestyles Offices are now located. The Administration Building is located between the K&M Pharmacy and the Wells Fargo Bank directly across the street from the Riviera Spa & Fitness Center. You may access the Admin Office from the parking lot or Village Drive, as we have doors on both sides of the office. The Lifestyles Office, where you would register your dog for the dog park, sign up for garden plots, purchase tickets for Lifestyle events, or reserve a room is located above the Bistro on the second floor. Solivita can be a maze if you don’t know your way around. The first time I got lost in Solivita I was on my way to work at The Palms and the road that I would normally take was closed. This forced me to go through the main gate and wouldn’t have been an issue if it was planned and I had the address for my GPS, but I didn’t! I continued down Village Drive and kept going straight, but it was so foggy that I made the wrong turn and had no clue where I was. Thankfully a resident was heading out at 6:30am. I stopped him and said, “Could you please get me back onto Village Drive because I have no clue where I am!” He was so kind that he directed me all the way to The Palms. I don’t know his name but if you’re reading this, thank you again. Isn’t it nice to have neighbors like this? Getting lost is not a terrible thing if a nice person finds you! Since we all know where we are now, let’s talk about the important date this month.

Labor Day

This holiday falls on Monday, September 4th this year in the U.S., but it is celebrated at various times of the year in different countries. Most countries celebrate it on May 1st, but Australia, Canada, Bahamas, and a few others vary. We, here in the U.S., do so on the first Monday in September. Whatever the date, workers worldwide appreciate that special day set aside for them. Hopefully we can all reflect on the hard workers back in the days when there were no laws to protect them. Thankfully we have come a long way since then.

Orlando’s Magical Dining Month

Magical Dining days are back from now until October 1st at select Orlando restaurants. $1 from each meal will be donated to the

Disney On Ice 2017 - Dare To Dream

Celebrate what’s possible as the adventures of five daring Disney heroines spark the courage inside us all at Disney On Ice presents Dare To Dream! Enjoy the adventure at the Amway Center, located on 400 West Church Street in Orlando, FL 32801. Shows are available on Friday, September 8th at 7:30pm; Saturday, September 9th at 11am, 3pm, and 7pm; and Sunday, September 10th at 1pm and 5pm. Depending on your seat, tickets range from $36 all the way up to $75 per person. You may purchase tickets online at amway.centerorlando.com. For more information, visit www.disneyonice.com/dare-to-dream or call 800-854-2196.

Kind people normally leave you with wonderful memories. I am hoping September delivers memories like that for everyone! Community Concierge 863-427-7100 sdestefano@evergreen-LM.com

Relay For Life

Submitted By Sue Quattrochi Relay For Life Event Lead Many of us living here in Solivita are Cancer Survivors. The moment you hear the words, “You have cancer,” you are a Fighter. As we “Hope for the Cure,” we support each other by supporting Cancer Awareness. The American Cancer Society has designated a ribbon color and a month for different cancers to help bring awareness. September is National Prostate Cancer (light blue), Ovarian Cancer (teal), Leukemia (orange), Lymphoma (lime green), and Gynecologic Cancer (peach) Awareness Month. September is also Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the ribbon color is gold. No one wants to have cancer. We are all fighting for the cure, not for us alone, but mostly for our grandchildren and greatgrandchildren so they don’t have to hear the words, “You have cancer.” The American Cancer Society research is making great strides towards better treatments and prevention. RELAY FOR LIFE, and the funds we raise, is a big part in a step closer to the CURE! Learn all the colors of cancer, because no one should fight alone!

Steaming into September! By Brad Thompson Branch Manager, Floralawn In Solivita, Floralawn is ending our first summer as your landscape maintenance provider. We’ve stepped up the look of the community with careful manicuring, different trimming protocols, and overall improvements.

Summer Progress

We recently completed turf applications of systemic insecticides. While the insecticide was developed to control a spectrum of pests, we use it primarily to combat chinch bugs. The insecticide goes into grass rhizomes and blades, and when chinch bugs penetrate the blades and consume the sap, they ingest the insecticide and die. With regard to plant replacements, we’ve completed the second list and we’re now working our way through the third. The first, second, and third sod replacement lists will be complete soon. In September, our summer rains will start to drop off. Did you know that in June and July this year we received 22 inches of rain? Plants that don’t like having wet feet (and show their dissatisfaction in yellowed leaves) will dry out and regain their color and vitality.

or transmit diseases and yet are annoying and make a mess of windshields as well as the vehicle’s grill. Rumor has it that love-bugs were bio-engineered in a University of Florida lab as a solution to the mosquito problem; that a pair escaped; and that—having no natural predators—their numbers exploded and they now populate the entire southeast United States. However, it’s just rumor. (Philip Koehler, a UF entomology professor, says it’s impossible. If UF had created them, the bugs would be orange and blue!) The actual origin of the love bug dates to the 1900s when the bugs migrated from Central America. Love bugs can be seen throughout the summer, but the largest populations occur in May and September. Our population this month will probably be substantial due to the amount of summer rain we received, which created a hospitable environment for the eggs to incubate and hatch.

Coffee Talk

My next Coffee Talk is scheduled for Friday, September 29th at 9am in the Starlite Ballroom. Bring your questions! And at any time, feel free to call us at 863-225-9569 or stop by our office in the Admin Building.
