How to Improve Your Balance

B

alance is a key asset to any person. It is often overlooked in day-to-day life. Often, people can become too pre-occupied worrying about increasing strength and speed, and neglect balance/ simpler core training.

Katie Chubb Personal Trainer

personaltrainerkatie@ gmail.com

Balance training has become overlooked. We are no longer hunter-gatherers, so we rarely need to use our bodies balance functions. We don’t forage for food or run from prey, but rather sit at desks and walk on perfectly flat sidewalks.

Increase Strength: Trainees can increase core strength with balance training, which assists in full body movements, such as squats and deadlifts.

Limit Injury: Millions of people around the world suffer from lower back pain or postural deficiencies. The reason is lack of balance and core strength. Workouts that focus on balance can limit injuries and correct posture problems.

POSITIVE REASONS TO WORK ON IMPROVING BALANCE

Better Performance: Improvements in balance increase performance in all sports and almost all activities. With a combination of strength, endurance, and balance, an athlete can tremendously excel in their sport.

Zumba Instructors Our dynamic duo, mother and daughter Reyna and Janice, have been Vitalia’s Zumba Instructors for the last four years. Reyna became a licensed instructor in 2005 and Janice received her license in 2009. They teach all Zumba formats such as Zumba Gold, Zumba Sentao, Aqua Zumba, Zumba Toning, and Zumba Kids. Both have made appearances on Zumba DVDs, danced with the creator of Zumba Fitness, and traveled to several states and countries to represent Zumba. Janice is an official Zumba choreographer for other Zumba instructors. The mother and daughter duo would like to invite you to attend one of 10   Vitalia Voice | March 2015

their great Zumba classes. Be sure to check out the class schedule inside on page 12. TESTIMONIALS FROM ZUMBA Needless to say, I think Reyna and Janice are simply terrific. If someone wants a work out they found it at their Zumba class. We are lucky to have such talented instructors. Keep moving. -- Bobbie Wilson Reyna and Janice are two hardworking people who never miss a beat. Their classes are inspirational and just plain fun. -- Mickey Almaliah Zumba is a blast! Both Janice and Reyna are little power houses and keep us moving. The hour passes in a flash. -Susan Alterman

The ladies of Vitalia will meet at the pool for a friendly game of volleyball.

Mahjong Club Please contact Shelley Deixler at shell842@gmail.com for more information and days/times that the club meets. MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER - ASK THE EXPERT Q: How do "atomic" (or "nuclear") hands work? A: You get to decide that for yourself. It's a table rule. Some players permit seven pairs of anything. Some players say the hand can only be made if the player never had a joker in the hand. Some players also say flowers invalidate the atomic hand. Some players say the player has to declare "atomic" (or an equivalent announcement) when going for the hand, and declare "nuclear-free zone" (or words to that effect) when the hand becomes void due to having picked a joker or flower. The group gets to figure out those details and how much the hand is worth, if the group wants to use the table rule at all.
