Hello from AV Homes By David Smith, Division President of AV Homes, Inc.
AS
a new contributing writer to Vitalia Voice, I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself to everyone. I'm proud to be the Division President for AV Homes, based in Kissimmee at our Solivita community. It's an incredibly exciting time to be a part of this growing company. We're excited to see the real estate market strengthening and always happy to welcome our new residents. I'm sure you've noticed the flurry of building activity and new neighbors moving into your community. With things moving along so well, we’re on schedule to welcome close to fifty new residents to Vitalia at Tradition by the beginning of 2014. It was great to see everyone out enjoying themselves at the Groundbreaking event for your new Resident Clubhouse. We hope everyone had a great time and look forward to hosting
many more events there. The progress is continuing nicely and we look forward to opening the doors next year. We know everyone is ready to start enjoying it. I'd also like to take a moment to thank the residents that participated in our resident testimonial video about life at Vitalia. We love hearing how much this community and your fellow residents mean to you and we strive to continue to provide that experience. If you haven't been by our Sales Center lately, please stop by. We have a few new faces and some exciting new floor plans to view. Don't forget, best friends make the best neighbors! Remind your friends up north we have great deals on homes that can close this year. We'll be happy to help find them the home of their dreams in time for the holidays. David Smith 863-427-7000

Giving Thanks
V
italia at Tradition Residents! Where did 2013 go? We are in November already and closing in on the end of 2013! Remember when a year seemed like an eternity and you couldn’t wait to be another year older? Now, it seems like I wish the year was longer so I'd have more time to enjoy it.
regard Florida as my home and while I don’t much miss the heat of Arizona, I do miss the people we left there. I guess the simple message is this: enjoy your family while you can because you never know when life will throw you a curve-ball that makes seeing family members more difficult.
In this month of thanksgiving, I wanted to take a moment to give thanks for a number of things, including my health. I was having a conversation 863-427-7103 with a resident in the fitness center, and this kcarmickle@aamfl.com Vitalia at Tradition resident is fit, active, and healthy. This individual believes that exercise makes all the difference. So if you’re on the fence about your exercise regime or if you’ve been thinking of joining one of the fitness classes that are currently offered but haven’t gotten around to it, I encourage you to get involved. If This year’s annual meeting will you want to live your be on Thursday, December 5th at retirement years to 2pm at the Tradition Townhall. the fullest, it seems Additional information regarding the answer is to stay active and fit!
Another thing I am thankful for is the many friends I have met here in Florida. Managing a community as diverse as ours naturally means that I come into contact with many different people. With my experience in multiple active adult communities, I guess I’m not surprised that some of those folks have become good friends. I try not to take that friendship for granted and am constantly thankful for it.

I’m also thankful for my family. My recent trip to Colorado provided the opportunity to see many of them and enjoy their company. I now

Lastly, I am really thankful for the awesome staff we have here at Vitalia and in Central Florida. Be it admin or lifestyle staff, they are all willing to go that extra mile to make the lives of our residents the best they can be. So, during this month of thanksgiving, I encourage you all to take the time to give thanks. No matter which way you look at it, we all have much to be thankful for. Enjoy this season! Enjoy the month of November and please let me know if you need anything!

Orchids
T
his is a new column devoted to a gardening topic. When I moved to Florida, I had several garden related items on my “bucket list.” They included getting my Master Gardener Certification, volunteering at a botanical garden, and learning how to grow orchids. The last has become a hobby of mine.

Next Month: The Bird-ofParadise Plant Family
It is widely believed that orchids are difficult to grow, but it is more accurate to say that they are different to grow. St. Lucie provides an excellent environment for the largest family of plants on this planet. We have warm summers with high humidity and frequent days of rain. In the winter, the temperatures drop and the rain ceases. Six orchid genera are widely recommended to home owners because of their adaptability, ease of growing, and beautiful flowers. These are: Cattleya, Phalenopsis, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Vanda, and Epidendrum. Cattleyas are the most popular. They have attractive showy flowers and some have scents. They come in many colors, either singly or in combination, and intensities ranging from bold to pastel shades. Cattleyas generally flower once a year. They have pseudobulbs that store water and need to be watered usually once a week. They belong to the “high light” group of orchids. Phalenopsis are a good choice for Florida gardeners. They have long arching sprays of flowers resembling moths in flight, hence their nickname, the “Moth Orchid.” They respond well to warm humid summers and they are low light orchids. They have oval, leathery leaves which should be olive green. A red tinge means they are getting too much light. Gardeners can choose from white, pink, yellow, orange, peppermint striped, and two-toned. Water when the medium is dry; once or twice a week in warmer weather. Dendrobiums produce flowers on long arching racemes from new and old growth. There are many species; most are white, lavender, or some combination. They have tall, thin stems (called pseudobulbs). They need lots of light, but not direct sun. Water once or twice a week.
14 Vitalia Voice | November 2013
Oncidiums have dainty yellow and brown or white and brown “dancing lady” flowers produced in profusion at various times of the year. They like bright light. Water every two to ten days depending on potting medium. Vandas, and closely related Ascocendas, are widely grown in Florida. They produce sturdy racemes with lots of flowers in warm months. Vanda colors range from white to variegated patterns of brown, green, blue, and purple. Ascocendas range from lavender and purple to fiery yellow, orange, and red. They like high light and the leaves should be medium green. They have extensive root systems and are frequently grown in slatted wooden baskets. They may need daily watering if their situation is warm and sunny. Epidendrum are the easiest, most prolific orchids to grow. They can be grown in the ground or pots. They produce flowers most of the year. Tips for Growing Orchids 1. Buy warm-growing orchids. 2. More orchids are killed by incorrect watering. Orchids need air and if the roots are too wet, it will suffocate and die. Most require water when potting. 3. Orchids will not bloom unless they have sufficient light. Leaves should be Granny Smith apple green, not dark green. They do need some protection from the sun. Dappled light/partial shade is best. 4. Fertilize weekly with a balanced fertilizer (such as, 20-20-20). 5. Different growers have their favorite potting mediums, including bark, porous volcanic stone, moss, charcoal, or a mixture. 6. Orchids, like other plants, are susceptible to disease. Contact your local extension office or orchid society for suggestions. If you love orchids and would like to learn more, come visit our local Port St. Lucie Orchid Society, which meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Garden. Be sure to visit the “Orchid Room” at the Garden.
