Swales Are Only Part of the Story
F Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919
lorida boasts over 10,000 miles of rivers and streams, about 7,800 lakes, more than 700 freshwater springs, and the U.S.’s second longest coastline. Even if you don’t live immediately on one of these water bodies, you do live in what’s known as a watershed (a drainage area). One of the most important steps you can take to protect any water body is maintaining a 10-foot “maintenance-free zone” around it. Do not fertilize, or use pesticides in this zone. Vitalia’s storm water retention ponds are designed to be an aesthetically pleasing and lively place, edged with plants and home to wildlife. The primary design is to store water and allow it to return back into the ecosystem without causing flooding in adjacent areas. All of the lakes inside Vitalia are linked to the drainage and swale system. A swale is a graded tract of land typically in between and behind your home. The swales are part of the Vitalia integrated water management plan. These swales are designed to manage rain water runoff, filter pollutants, and increase rainwater infiltration. The runoff, most commonly from your roof top, channels the water through your downspouts and into a swale. The water then travels along the swale to the front or back of the house to another swale or the street gutter. When water travels to the street it’s picked up by the street drain then piped to the storm water retention lakes. If your grade delivers to the backyard it’s picked up from there by a field
drain and channeled to the retention lakes. In both cases once the water is collected in the lake where it serves multiple purposes. Some of the water is absorbed and recharges the aquifer, some is spilled into the nearby canals during heavy rainfall and the rest is stored. The weather in Florida is very different from the rest of the US. Many times new residents are alarmed to see standing water in their swales, and even the street. In other states this could be cause for concern, but in Florida it’s a common occurrence. Because of this frequent occurrence, the South Florida Water Management District manages flood gates in the retention system, to lower the water levels when needed. When this extra water is released it flows into the nearby canal system then eventually makes its way into the Indian River and the ocean.
Tips to Help Preserve the Quality of Your Ponds:
•
Recycle or properly dispose of household products that contain chemicals, such as insecticides, pesticides, paint, solvents, used motor oil, and other auto fluids. Don’t pour them onto the ground or into storm drains.
•
Avoid excess fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides applied to lawns and gardens, which can wash off and pollute streams.

community news
Swales...continued •
Don’t overwater your lawn. In just a few minutes it becomes runoff.
•
Install an automated rain sensor on your irrigation system. Do not water between the hours of 10am and 4pm, as much of the moisture will be lost due to evaporation.
•
Washing your car and degreasing auto parts at home can send detergents and other contaminants through the storm sewer system.
•
Pet waste can be a major source of bacteria and excess nutrients in local waters.
•
When walking your pet, remember to pick up the waste and dispose of it properly. Flushing pet waste is the best disposal method.
•
Leaving pet waste on the ground increases public health risks by allowing harmful bacteria and
nutrients to wash into the storm drain and eventually into local waterbodies.
Know Your Documents 6.32 Hurricane Shutters. Any hurricane shutters or other protective devices visible from outside a Home shall be of a type approved in writing by the ARC. Panel, accordion and roll-up style hurricane shutters may not be left closed during hurricane season (nor at any other time). Any such approved hurricane shutters may be installed or closed up to fifty (50) hours prior to the expected arrival of a hurricane and must be removed or opened within seventy-two (72) hours after the end of a hurricane watch or warning or as the Board may determine otherwise. Except as the Board may otherwise decide, shutters may not be closed at any time other than a storm event. Any approval by the ARC shall not be deemed an endorsement of the effectiveness of hurricane shutters.

Happy August! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I have already heard some fascinating vacation stories! Thank you for sharing!
Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505
Even though many families are still on vacations, we continue to have fun here at the Captiva Club. Don’t forget to RSVP for one of our summer ice cream socials. The next one is August 13th, but don't forget to RSVP at the front lobby desk! We like to be prepared and have enough ice cream for everyone to cool down from the summer heat! Also, on Labor Day (Monday, September 5th) we will have another ice cream social, so be on the lookout for more information! Have you been receiving the Friday email updates? These emails contain lots of updated information on Lifestyle events, club happenings, and other information. If you’re not receiving these updates, please contact the lobby desk and inform one of the Lifestyle Attendants. They will take your information so we can get you included!
Did you know Sunday, August 7th is National Friendship Day? This day was originally founded by Hallmark in 1919. It was intended to be a day for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other cards, but by 1940 the market had dried up, and eventually it died out completely. However, in 1998 Winnie the Pooh was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations, and in April 2011 the United Nations officially recognized July 30th as International Friendship Day; although most countries celebrate on the first Sunday of August. Do you have a friend that has been on your mind for a while now? Reach out and pay it forward with a card or phone call! Get in contact with your friends for a chat or visit. Post on social media using #NationalFriendshipDay to encourage others to join in paying it forward. Have a wonderful rest of the summer, stay cool and hydrated!

Please be a good neighbor - if you see that a newsletter has been left at a neighbor's house and they are away, please be so kind as to remove it and drop it off at the clubhouse. In addition to that, please let Rick Dixon know so he can remove them from the delivery list. Please remember, we are now delivering to 650+ homes on 19 streets and it is impossible for all streets to be delivered on the same day. Your delivery people are all residents volunteering their time and effort to make the deliveries. Thank you so much! out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.
Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.
Aquacise at Sunset Beach Pool An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.
Aqua Zumba at Sunset Beach Pool Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!
Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.
Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.
H20 Pilates at Sunset Beach Pool Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.
Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one 8 Vitalia Voice | August 2016
or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.
Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.
Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.
Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.
Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.
Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.
Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity.

In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belasco's parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, as the rest of the world goes to war, she encounters Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the family's Japanese gardener. Unnoticed by those around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his family, like thousands of other Japanese Americans are declared enemies and forcibly relocated to internment camps run by the United States government. Throughout their lifetimes, Alma and Ichimei reunite again and again, but theirs is a love that they are forever forced to hide from the world. Upcoming book: September 13th - Iron House by John Hart. Contact: Adrian Goetz, 772-345-2294 or gba1255@aol.com.

Managing Bubbie is a heartrending and hilarious family memoir. The author recounts the frequently hectic, everexhausting trials of one Jewish family in Miami Beach as they try to oversee the care of the elderly, unmanageable Lea Lazega. As they scramble for an acceptable assisted living facility and struggle to get her medication in line, they discover the difficulties of controlling a woman who time and again eluded catastrophe by refusing to be told what to do. A tapestry of an American family in the 1980s, Managing Bubbie also revisits the Holocaust period to mine the love, hope, and humor that emerged from the deepest despair. Anyone who savors a soft heart with a sharp funny bone will laugh, cry, and commiserate with the confounded family who must manage their beloved, impossible Bubbie. 14   Vitalia Voice | August 2016

Once the wall is built, whenever something happens to the wall, best efforts must be made to preserve the original order of tiles in the wall, regardless of how much information was revealed to any players.
