Protecting Your Pets from Pesticides
Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919
In my own home, my pets are the center of our family. I often think about their interaction and perspective, especially when it comes to something that could harm them. Within an average home there are dozens of household products used both inside and out that can inadvertently harm them if not used or stored correctly. Pets are curious by nature and common pesticides to control insects can be an accident waiting to happen. Pesticides can be absorbed through your pet’s mucous membranes, their eyes, nose and mouth, and into the bloodstream. Some pesticide residues will still injure your pet when they chew on a toy or ingest a treated plant. If you suspect accidental ingesting, if your pet shows lethargy, abundant salivation, or shaking, you should contact your veterinarian immediately and if available, have the suspected product label on hand. Pesticide labels contain precautionary statement sections and have specific directions concerning hazards to humans and domestic animals. Check this section of the label before making the pesticide application. The label will provide information on:
•
statements regarding the length of time that the treated area should remain clear of people and pets. Following these tips should provide plenty of prevention:
•
Don’t spray or store cleaning or pesticide products near pet food or water dishes.
•
Make sure animals don’t have access to bait products while they are in use.
•
In the event of a spill, be sure to keep animals out of the area until it is cleaned up.
•
Spraying outdoor products on a windy day can cause off-site movement of pesticides to water sources used by wildlife.
•
Store all pesticides and household cleaners where pets can’t access them.
Remember pets are a big part of our lives, but we are their entire life.

The best way to protect your pet when using pesticides is to use as much caution as possible. Prior to making an application, remove bedding, chew toys, and feed and water dishes that are in the intended area and keep the area well ventilated. American Heart Month
Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505
Hello from the Lifestyles Department! February is American Heart Month! As I researched heart health guidelines, I came across a checklist called Life’s Simple 7 posted by The American Heart Association. It encompasses seven measures that people can use to rate their heart health and take steps to improve it.
Manage Blood Pressure High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. When your blood pressure stays within healthy ranges, you reduce the strain on your heart, arteries, and kidneys which keeps you healthier longer.
Control Cholesterol High cholesterol contributes to plaque, which can clog arteries and lead to heart disease and stroke. When you control your cholesterol, you are giving your arteries their best chance to remain clear of blockages.
Reduce Blood Sugar Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (or blood sugar) that our bodies use for energy. Over time, high levels of blood sugar can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
Get Active Living an active life is one of the most rewarding gifts you can give yourself and those you love. Simply put, daily physical activity increases your length and quality of life.
4 Vitalia Voice | February 2016
Eat Better A healthy diet is one of your best weapons for fighting cardiovascular disease. When you eat a heart-healthy diet, you improve your chances for feeling good and staying healthy – for life!
Lose Weight When you shed extra fat and unnecessary pounds, you reduce the burden on your heart, lungs, blood vessels and skeleton. You give yourself the gift of active living, you lower your blood pressure and you help yourself feel better, too.
Stop Smoking Cigarette smokers have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health. You can find more helpful information at the American Heart Association website, www. heart.org. Many organizations are taking initiatives to bring about awareness and hopefully prevention against deadly heart failure. If you don’t know how to access this website by computer, stop by our computer lab and one of the Lifestyle Attendants will gladly show you how to bring up this website and read more about keeping your heart healthy! Happy Heart Month!

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.
Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Reducing belly fat is beneficial for all around health and reduces the risk of sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease ( just to name a few) and makes it easier to put your pants and shoes on! Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.
All Level Yoga Authentic Hatha Yoga class with focus on proper alignment with emphasis on breath and meditation. This deeply relaxing class enlivens the body, challenges the mind and soothes the spirit. Please enter the room in silence and bring your own mat, towel, and water in a closed container.
Aquacise Sunset Beach Pool
An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.
Aqua Zumba Sunset Beach Pool
Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!
Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.
Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing 8 Vitalia Voice | February 2016
hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.
H20 Pilates Sunset Beach Pool
Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.
Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.
Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.
Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.
Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.
Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to

Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.
Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.
Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity.
Arts & Crafts Classes Questions regarding the Arts & Crafts Classes can be directed to Debbie Chisholm at 772-800-2504 or dchisholm@evergreen-LM.com. *Cost of supplies will be determined for each class and posted.*

We’ll be discussing The Art of Hearing Hearbeats by Jan Philip-Sendker. When a successful New York lawyer suddenly disappears without a trace, neither his wife nor his daughter Julia has any idea where he might be - until they find a love letter he wrote many years ago to a Burmese woman they have never heard of. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father’s past, Julia decides to travel to the village where the woman lived. There she uncovers a tale of unimaginable hardship, resilience, and passion that will reaffirm the listener’s belief in the power of love to move mountains.
