Fertilize Appropriately

Tyler Heel Community Manager theel@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919

All plants need nutrients for growth. They must obtain these nutrients from the soil or other mediums in which they’re growing. You can also provide supplemental nutrients to plants by applying fertilizers in the form of composted organic material, packaged fertilizer, or a specific mineral such as iron. Plants have varying nutrient needs, depending on the species, the age of the plant, and its location. It’s not always necessary to fertilize your plants or lawn, but if you choose to fertilize, it’s important that you do so properly.

Fertilizer Components Most fertilizers available for use in the home landscape or garden are blends of several elements mixed together to achieve a specific formulation of plant nutrients. Macronutrients are nutrients required by plants in relatively large amounts for optimum plant growth. The three main nutrients contained in fertilizers are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), represented by three numbers that appear on the bag. Micronutrients are nutrients most plants need in small quantities and are sometimes referred to as trace elements or minor elements. These nutrients, which include boron (B), chlorine (Cl), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and zinc (Zn), are often available in sufficient quantities in the soil, but are also present in many fertilizers. Micronutrients are also sold as individual nutrients.

nutrients they need. Even when plants show signs of nutrient deficiencies, keep in mind that fertilizer might not help - these plants may not be suited for their location or their roots may be damaged in some way. Consider removing high-maintenance plants from your landscape and substituting lower maintenance choices.

Palms & Cycads Palms and cycads have more complex nutritional requirements than other landscape plants. The ideal fertilizer for palms and cycads has an analysis of 8-2-12-4 Mg; all of its N, K and Mg should be in slow release form. Since palms are prone to several potentially fatal micronutrient deficiencies, this fertilizer should also contain 1–2 percent iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), plus trace amounts of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and boron (B). Using fertilizers with ratios other than the one given may cause or intensify nutrient deficiencies.

Fertilizing the Lawn A properly maintained lawn filters storm water runoff, reduces air temperatures, and helps prevent pollution and stabilize soil. Grass that receives appropriate levels of fertilizer (not too little and not too much) might also require fewer cultural or chemical controls for weeds, insects, and diseases, since it grows more vigorously and is strong and healthy. No matter what kind of grass you have or where in the state you live, you should not apply more fertilizer than the rate listed on the label. If using a quick release product, apply only up to 0.5 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Too much fertilizer can harm your lawn, exposing it to pests, fungus, or other issues.

Fertilizing Landscape Plants If you’re happy with the color and appearance of your landscape plants (shrubs, flowers, trees, etc.), you don’t need to fertilize them. Many established plants don’t need fertilizer and many trees will thrive without it. Remember that fertilizer applied to turf will reach the roots of plants nearby, so if you fertilize your lawn, your plants may already be getting all the

While this reference contains only a few subjects within fertilization. It is a complex but essential need in our state. You should always consult a professional before supplementing your landscape.

Happy June and Welcome Summer! I hope everyone is having a good start to their summer! I’ve already heard about some fascinating vacation trips planned so be sure to take lots of pictures to share with us when you return!

Carlyn Hagler Lifestyles Director chagler@ evergreen-LM.com 772-800-2505

We had a fantastic showcase year and I’m excited to bring back even bigger shows for 2017. I’m finalizing some final details and should be able to announce our lineup in the next week or so! If you’ve been reading my monthly letters, you will notice I try to recognize some fun facts for national recognition days for the month. Did you know the first Friday in June, National Doughnut, or Donut Day, is celebrated? This day honors the Salvation Army “Lassies,” the women that served donuts to soldiers during WWI. The first Friday in June began as a

fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army. The goal of their 1938 first fundraiser was to help the needy during the Great Depression. National Donut Day for 2016 is Friday, June 3rd. Stop by the Captiva Club anytime from 7:30am-10am and donuts will be available for a “dough”-nation which will go towards the United Way School Supply Drive of St. Lucie County. Complimentary coffee will be served. Join us poolside for some refreshing ice cream on Saturday, June 11th from 2pm-4pm. This is a FREE event, but you will need to RSVP to me at chagler@evergreen-LM.com or at the lobby desk! We would love for you to join us and please bring the grandkids! Enjoy your summer!

out & about Fitness Classes Current class schedules are available in the lobby and on the website calendar at VitaliaAtTraditionHOA.com. All classes are held in the Shoreside Aerobics Studio, unless otherwise specified.

Abs & More! 30 minutes of abdominal exercise combined with 20 minutes of a different target area each week (i.e.: arms, legs, back). You know you need to exercise your belly, but usually avoid it. So come join this class and check it off of your “to do list.” Core abdominal strength is essential for balance, strength, posture, coordination, and directly supports lower back strength. Participants must be able to get up and down from the floor for this class.

Aquacise at Sunset Beach Pool An excellent cardio and strength workout for all levels by utilizing water weights, aqua gloves and noodles to achieve a very unique workout. Swimming is not required.

Aqua Zumba at Sunset Beach Pool Get your ‘groove on’ as you burn calories with a complete, no-impact workout. This class is for all who enjoy having a blast while getting in an aqua-fantastic workout!

Core Strength A safe yet effective, non-impact exercise class designed to strengthen the CORE muscles of the body while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Improve strength, posture, balance and coordination. A strong foundation is a key component to prevent injury, reduce back pain and enhance your activities of daily living. Modifications will be given to ensure safety and to cater to all levels.

Group X Toning Take your workout to the next level. This class is designed to strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group utilizing hand weights and/or barbells and other equipment. Group exercise provides a motivating atmosphere that is conducive to working out! Any fitness level is welcome.

H20 Pilates at Sunset Beach Pool Non-impact strengthening and stretching movements that require precise breathing and muscle control. Practicing Pilates in the water develops trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, helps correct posture and relieves stress.

Line Dancing Line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one 8   Vitalia Voice | June 2016

or more lines or rows, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.

Pilates The content of each class is dictated by the bodies that attend it. Want to fix your sciatica; Scoliosis; or Stenosis? Don’t have any injuries and wanna keep it that way? Learn how to stack yourself with integrity (perfect posture) so you can build strength and power wherever you need it.

Step and Tone This is a form of aerobic power distinguished from other types of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform (the step). It helps burn calories, reduce stress, promote restful sleep, and strengthen muscles. Incorporating both upper and lower body movements together will improve your coordination and agility, and the constant push up onto the step will increase leg strength.

Stretch Lengthen and strengthen your muscles, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and allow your body the time to relax and rebuild. Relieve joint pain, muscle soreness, and avoid injury. Stretching improves balance, posture and coordination, increases cardiovascular endurance, adds strength for daily activities, improves your sport, and prolongs life. Modifiers will be given for all levels - chairs can also be used if needed for assistance.

Yin/Restorative Yoga This is passive style using long stretches of 1-20 minutes to work the fascia (connective tissue); we will be holding for 2-8 minutes per pose. Restorative takes the same pose and through the use of blankets, bolsters and/or blocks, allows the person to “melt” into a relaxed state. All work is done on the mat either seated or lying down and may utilize the wall.

Zumba Incorporates Latin and international music and dance with a blended balance of cardio and muscle toning.

Zumba Gold Introduces easy-to-follow choreography focusing on balance, range of motion, and coordination. A modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower-intensity.

MALKA'S MAHJONG CORNER: ASK THE EXPERT 1123 11111 11111 This hand contains a “run” - a rising numerical sequence. It’s made up of two singles and a pair. Q: Do the quints and the pair have to be the first number in the run, as shown on the card? A: No. The pair can be the first, second, or third number in the run. You have to read the parenthetical, and read it very carefully. The phrase “Any No. in Run” means that the pair can be any number in the run. That means that the pair does not have to be only the first number in the run. And the quints have to be the same number as the pair (that’s what “Pr & Quints Match” means)!
