Soil Quality in Vitalia Below is a letter from Dennis Schwentner of NativeGreen Pest Control & Fertilization and the intent is to help everyone better understand the soil quality here in Vitalia and how it is effecting the overall growth and vitality of the landscape plants, palms and turf.
Andrea Bull Community Manager abull@ evergreen-LM.com 877-221-6919
We have heavy clay soils which are extremely compacted. It cannot support sufficient gas exchange (oxygen into the roots and carbon monoxide out of the roots) which causes carbon monoxide build up or poisoning within the root zone causing severe stress and/or death. This soil also has a high pH value “alkaline” which restricts the availability for uptake of specific nutrients. The soil has very little, if no, organic matter to support the “soil food web” or in turn, a healthy root growth. In short: the soil is infertile, compacted, poorly drained, and not a very good growing environment for root and plant growth. This is what makes getting the landscape to perform for you a real challenge! A quality landscape typically is established and maintained on a good top soil layer which is comprised of primarily organic matter that has collected over many, many years. Most frequently however in new developments such as Vitalia, this layer of organic top soil has been removed during construction and low quality soil layers are brought to the surface causing highly disturbed soil profiles. Soils differ in their makeup and their ability to grow quality turf and ornamentals. The physical properties including soil texture and structure, influence water movement and air exchange which are very important to root growth and the organisms living within the soil. Compacted soils rapidly reduce the amount of organic matter, restricts drainage and creates an environment lacking sufficient oxygen to support root health, as well as supporting all of the living organisms needed in a healthy soil. Clay soil
is what we primarily have here in Vitalia. Clay particles are the smallest of all soil particles and align easily causing tight soil spaces reducing the amount of water/nutrient movement, retention and aeration. During heavy rainfall or irrigation, the clay soil can stay in a saturated condition. Saturated root zones produce poor plant conditions and because of limited air, roots often suffocate and die. Clay soils also become hard and compacted when they dry out and can very easily overheat also causing root death or decline. Soil health is extremely important to fertilization and nutrient uptake. It includes both the physical components and living organisms. One would be surprised to know that one teaspoon of soil contains more life than there are people on the planet. A healthy soil has a complex network of life that includes bacteria, fungi, microscopic worms (nematodes), arthropods, earthworms and many other micro-organisms. This is what we term the “soil food web.” A complex network of underground life that includes everything needed to sustain plant life, all of which lives in the organic layer of the soil profile. Here at Vitalia, this has been removed and it will take time to rebuild the “food web.” Take comfort in knowing though that soil health can be restored! The bottom line is that we have to let the soil biology take over again. This does however take some time and some plants/ turf surely will not be able to live through this transition or will perform poorly. Homeowners can aid this process by adding large amounts of compost, leaf litter, shredded mulch and food scraps, etc. which will help to ignite a fury of activity that will be the catalyst needed to begin the turn around. “Grow the soil and the soil will grow the plants!” NativeGreen is adjusting our fertilizers to compensate as much as possible chemically for the nutrient falls, but time is the only realistic answer to replace the deficient organic matter that will promote a living soil.
