n December 5th at 2pm Vitalia at Tradition homeowners are cordially invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Association at the Tradition Townhall.

Kraig Carmickle Community Manager 863-427-7103 kcarmickle@aamfl.com

Meeting notices were mailed out in early November to all Vitalia homeowners and the notice included the following items: Agenda 2013 Annual Meeting Agenda and the 2014 proposed HOA Budget. Questionnaire The questionnaire needed to be returned by Wednesday, November 27th to include any questions pertaining to the community that you would like addressed at the Annual Meeting. This is a great way to communicate if you’re not able to attend the meeting. We will provide answers or responses to all the questions gathered before the meeting on December 5th. Over the past year I have had several residents ask who sprays for mosquitoes in Vitalia and the Tradition development. The St. Lucie County Mosquito Control District is responsible for mosquito control in the Tradition development and within Vitalia. The zone that includes the Tradition development and Vitalia was fogged in early November. The following is additional information on the

Mosquito Fogging Hotline and the Mosquito Control District. Mosquito Fogging Hotline The Fogging Information Hotline's number is 772-462-1800. Please remember the most up to date information is posted on the hotline after 3:30pm EST. To check on the zones that will be fogged and a zone map please visit www. stlucieco.gov/mosquito/fogging_dates_ times.htm for more information. The St. Lucie County Mosquito Control District is an independent taxing district, overseen by its own board and by the Mosquito Control Section of the Florida Bureau of Entomology and Pest Control (Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). Residents are most familiar with the trucks used for spraying adult mosquitoes, but District services also include: reduction of mosquito breeding habitat, control of mosquito larvae where possible, monitoring of mosquitoes (and viruses they sometimes carry), measurement and analysis of environmental information, environmental education, and public use of impounded wetland parks. The District boundaries contain 301 square miles. There are 20 full-time, 10 part-time, and 5 temporary employees in four divisions: Administration, Biology/Inspection, Adulticiding Operations, and Impoundment Operations.

The Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens is a welcome oasis of greenery in the heart of the city. The Gardens is located on 20 acres of property on the west side of Westmoreland Blvd., just south of Port St. Lucie Blvd. on the banks of the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. The property was acquired through the joint efforts of the City of Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County, and the Florida Trust for Public Lands. The site boasts a lake with a fountain, paved public paths, beautiful gardens, a pavilion, a gift shop, and a special place for weddings, as well as ample public parking. This beautiful sanctuary includes a butterfly garden, orchid room, and rose garden. The Gardens also hosts a variety of children's programs, plant sales, and the popular Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society concerts. The Gardens is operated by the Friends of the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, a non-profit organization that was founded to help support the daily operations of The Gardens. 5400 N.E. St. James Drive, Port St. Lucie, FL 772-785-5833

The Oxbow Eco-Center is an environmental learning center located on a 225-acre preserve on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River and is where young and old alike can discover the mysterious and hidden life of the forest and river. The preserve at the “Oxbow” is a living laboratory, offering yearround educational programs on a variety of nature-related subjects. At the Oxbow, you can join a naturalist on a guided walk through quiet gardens planted and nurtured by Mother Nature herself, or journey on your own through the verdant and wild sanctuary. The preserve offers a rare glimpse of “the real Florida” - a place where the past and the present come alive in the canopy of the floodplain forest, the scrub and pine flatwoods, and in the primordial swamps and wetlands. The Oxbow Eco-Center houses an Exhibit Hall and Discovery Room, which invite you to use all your senses, touching various artifacts of nature, listening to bird songs, and seeing some of Florida's native reptiles. The centerpiece exhibit takes you on a journey down the St. Lucie River, one of the most diverse rivers in the state, with more species of fish than any other river in Florida. This life-size exhibit takes you from the river's genesis, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, visiting both the freshwater environment and the estuary along the way. You will experience a unique view of the underwater world, where you'll encounter dozens of fish species, including 20 different replicas of fish, several turtles and crustaceans, and even a life-size manatee with her calf. You'll also learn about the land and habitat that surround the river as you gaze up through a created water line to view native Florida plants and animals, including nearly a dozen species of birds. It's an experience you won't want to miss! For More Information www.stlucieco.gov/erd/oxbow

The Bird-of-Paradise Family

O Nan Rothschild Resident Master Gardener mininan1@htcplus.net

ne of my favorite tropical plants is the birdof-paradise. When I moved here full time, I went to the Fort Pierce Green Market one day with Arlene Klein and Sandy Breier. Arlene has many years of tropical gardening experience from living down in Key West. To my delight, someone was selling bird-of-paradise plants and Arlene helped me pick one. I planted it in a pot and several months later it did not seem to be doing well. I decided to transplant it into the ground. As I was transplanting it, the only flower fell off. I tried to not be upset and decided to pick it up and enjoy it in water in a vase inside the house. However, it looked a little strange at the bottom. Imagine my surprise when upon close inspection I discovered that it was a fake flower! Beware, as I’ve seen this trick in several “box” stores around here. The bird-of-paradise is part of the Strelitziaceae family and is related to the banana family (Musaceae), as well as the broader assemblage (once called Scitaminae) Heliconias, and gingers. The bird-of-paradise family has large banana-like leaves and bilaterally symmetrical flowers largely enclosed in long, horizontal boat-shaped bracts (modified leaves). The common name derives from the unique flower shape which resembles a bird in flight. The bird-of-paradise family is native to Africa and Madagascar. The species cultivated in our area are bird-of-paradise, white bird-of-paradise, and Traveler’s Tree (or Palm). Bird-of-paradise makes an attractive landscape plant throughout Florida. It will tolerate temperatures as low as 24°F for a short time; however, freezing temperatures will damage developing flower buds and flowers. Bird-of-paradise (Strelitzia Reginae) is a commonly cultivated variety with large blue and orange inflorescences. The plants have no trunks and large banana-like leaves rise from the base. The showy bloom is actually a combination of upright yellow sepals and two blue petals that are visible. It grows up to five feet tall and the plants should be spaced two to five feet apart.

12   Vitalia Voice | December 2013

White bird-of-paradise (Strelitzia Nicolai) grows 15 to 30 feet tall and has large banana-like leaves arranged spirally around a distinct stem. Flowers emerge from boat shaped bracts (modified leaves) with two upright white sepals and two blue petals visible. Traveler’s Tree or Traveler's Palm (Ravenala Madagascariensis) can grow to 30+ feet. The name refers to the water available in cup-shaped leaf bases. The banana-like leaves are arranged in a flat pattern resembling a fan. The bracts are boat-shaped and overlapping. The white flowers are hidden by the bracts. It is sometimes confused with the white bird-of-paradise; however, the numerous overlapping greenish bracts are arranged flatly in a single plane versus blue toned bracts, and white versus blue and white flowers. It is used in landscaping as a focal point. Bird-of-paradise grows in moist soil, but does best in fertile, organic soil with good drainage. It is considered a slow grower. Plants grown in partial shade will be taller and have somewhat larger flowers. In full sun, plants are smaller and flowers are on shorter stems. When planting, make sure the top of the root ball is no deeper than the soil surface or you will delay flowering. Make sure it receives adequate moisture during the first six months to get established. Dry or soggy conditions will cause leaves to yellow and die. Water frequently during summer and in winter only when the soil is fairly dry. Put mulch around the base, but keep a two to three inch circular area around the stems free of mulch to prevent stem rot. For best growth and flowering, fertilize every three months. Growing a bird-of-paradise from seed takes three to five years, but bird-ofparadise can be propagated by division which will produce mature, flowering plants in one to two years. Dig up and separate old clumps during late spring or early summer. Bird-of-paradise is relatively pest free. Recommendations for insect and disease management are available from your local extension office.
