Bakkie het moordenaar glo rygeleentheid gegee. Zim burger vandag in hof oor Pringlebaai moord
Die ondersoekbeampte, kapt. Danie Rautenbach (regs) en sers. Riekie Rudman Maandagmiddag by die moordtoneel.
Me Ferra Thompson is Maandag deur ‘n vriend dood aangetref in haar luukse huis in Hangklipweg.

Me Thompson se selfoon is intussen teruggevind.

Daar is in 2005 laas ‘n moord in dié rustige kusdorpie aangeteken. Yolande Van Rensburg RIP and our heartfelt condolences to her loved ones. SAP we need a far more vigilant approach to proactive Safety. Why must tragedy always happen before action is taken. The crime in our town is out of control. We need some form of access control, this is an international biosphere after all. Boom with R5 entrance for non-residents. Good work on arresting the perpetrators. Carol Vilonel Ward Thank you SAP .... RIP ... Ferra Thompson Phillippa Middelmann Well done - but oh so sad. Gerhard Vosloo As a owner of a property in Pringle Bay, I hope that this incident will unite the community to petition Overstrand for a gated community with 24 hrs visible policing, patrolling and all that is required to make Pringle Bay a safe community, as it should be. Personally we have suffered 3 incidents of petty burglary where windows were removed and small items stolen. I understand that in total 70 incidents took place during the last 3 months. This makes a peaceful village bad. Indeed condolences to the family. No
alternative for the village; close it off and keep the perpetrators out ! Dalene Lombard Malan Everybody should petition for more police vehicles..the 1 verhicle that must serve the entire area from Betty’s to Kleinmond is surely not enough? I am certain that the criminals are aware that they can easily get away with crime as this actually means...no police? “Track” elke persoon, inwoner of nie. Dit moet nou einde kry in Suid -Afrika. Dink weermag moet begin werk vir n slag. Yvette Jackson Wettelose land! No laws, no law abiding citizens! Grense Is mos oop! Stop feeling sorry for everyone! Look after your own! Mike Beyl And here it starts, only the beginning of the end. It was only a matter of time. With all the poachers moving in(because in the Overberg it is a safe haven for them) crime will increase 1000 times over Ester van der Westhuizen Die monsters is WREED. 52 jaar oud! Bitter jonk nog, nee man. Marthie Steyn Holdstock Sjoe dit is so tragies!?
Man, dan voel ek mos om te sê: “Vat jou liefde ‘and shove it where the sun don’t shine’!” Ek reken jou kind is jou kind. As
Jy is lief (of

Botrivier vleiland nou ‘n Ramsargebied
Our readers are most likely well aware of the important role of wetlands, such as: • Housing specially adapted plants which act like sponges; helping to slow down water flow and reducing the negative effects of floods. • Acting as natural filters that help to purify the water by trapping silt, pollutants, excess nutrients, heavy metals and pesticides. • Providing an opportunity to observe birds from bird hides or along the hiking trails which traverse the area. Some members/readers may however wonder why this development is of importance and what the value of having a

Ramsar-site status is. The objectives of the Ramsar Convention, of which South -Africa was a founding member back in 1971, is broadly to stem the loss of wetlands and to ensure they are kept safe from encroaching human industrialisation and overuse. This is achieved through intergovernmental co-operation and agreements whereby a national governmental authority formally assumes the duties of an administrative authority. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism and its predecessors performed these duties for several decades. The present management of our Estuarine System is jointly done by Cape Nature and the Overstrand Municipality with the Bot River Estuary Forum (BREF) as their main controlling structure.
Vakansie en Permanente Huurhuise gesoek
One of the Ramsar-site requirements is that the boundaries of the site is carefully described, mapped and written descriptions thereof are provided for incorporation into the Ramsar database. Changes in the ecological character of the site must be reported to the Ramsar Bureau based in Gland in Switzerland. Private individuals and NGO’s can report states that fail to report threats or detrimental changes to Ramsar-sites and thus provide an opportunity or practical means of keeping states and their managing authorities on their toes (Rod Randall, Sept/Oct 2007). ‘Our’ estuary is like most of the Ramsar wetlands, also not without its challenges; such as illegal angling, gill-netting and recreational uses on
privately owned areas which can disturb the birds that make this a wetland of international importance. “Of the 86 bird species recorded at the BotKleinmond estuary, three species are globally threatened; the Bank Cormorant being the most notable” (Ramsar SA, May 2017). The most important challenge in our view is the remaining controversial process of artificially breaching a dune barrier every 2 - 5 years (along a predetermined plan) to allow juvenile fish to enter the estuary for angling purposes; an act which is good for fish stocks and the wetland’s assumed role as a fish nursery but that “has been shown to have detrimental ecological consequences in the rest of an estuary system” (Ramsar SA, May 2017). Hy skryf: “Amongst all of SouthAfrica’s coastal water bodies and wetlands, the Botvlei/ Kleinmond System is unique in terms of both its biological/ habitat diversity and its aesthetic attributes. It lies at the foot of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve (KBR) and forms part of it. However, it is also facing a number of serious threats which are placing a question mark over its future ecological and economic viability. These threats are summarized below, together with comments on measures needed to counter them. ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES: The Botvlei/Kleinmond coastal aquatic system is situated in a spectacularly beautiful region of the south-western Cape, characterized by fynboscovered mountains and a nearshore marine environment with extensive beaches, rocky headlands and kelp-dominated ecosystems harbouring valuable living resources. The natural processes governing this region are largely dependent on the ecological interaction of land and sea. In this context estuarine water bodies play a cardinally important role - with the Botvlei/ Kleinmond System amongst the most significant. Its protection on a sustainable basis is therefore a matter of substantial importance in both environmental and economic terms. Without proper understanding of how this beautiful and diverse coastal aquatic system functions, it is not possible to establish effective management strategies which will ensure optimal benefit to the country over the long term. The system consists of four discrete but constantly interacting components: 1.The main water body, or ‘Botvlei’, receives water from a ± 900 square kilometre catchment, characterized by a dominance of shale – hence the turbid nature of the vlei water. The dimensions of Botvlei are roughly 7 x 2 km, but the main water body is subject to enormous variations
in surface area due to its shallowness (mostly less than 1m) and high evaporation rates, especially during the hot, windy summer months. Rainfall in the catchment varies between roughly 600 - 1000 mm/year. Botvlei is separated from the sea by a broad dune and beach belt and it is only very occasionally that waves from the sea will wash over the beach belt into the vlei during storm equinox spring high tides. The system has evolved in such a manner that floodwaters drain into the Rooisand sand-flats and from there via the Lamloch Swamps to Kleinmond, where the system opens into the sea whenever water levels are high enough – (‘klein mond van die groot vlei sisteem’). Natural breaching of the beach berm near Hawston only occurs on very rare occasions. 2.The Rooisand sand-flats (roughly 1800 x 500m), represent an interesting component of the overall system. When covered with water, Rooisand provides a habitat for a wide variety of coastal birds and waders. At such times, flamingos and pelicans provide spectacular displays. It is the ‘connecting link’ between the main Botvlei and its mouth at Kleinmond, but it only serves this purpose when water levels are high. During dry, low water level periods, Rooisand takes on the form of a wide sandy area, interspersed with a few vegetation-covered islands. Even then it serves as a valuable habitat for coastal birds and numerous other forms of wildlife. In 2009 Rooisand was declared a provincial nature reserve. This was made possible through the collaborative efforts of provincial and municipal officials, conservation bodies such as the Kogelberg Biosphere Association (KOBIO) and the private sector, especially the Arabella Country Estate. 3.Adjacent to and immediately to the west of Rooisand, are the Lamloch Swamps (roughly 3 x 1.5 km). These swamps receive water from both Rooisand (when water levels are high) and from run-off from the TMS-dominated Kogelberg Mountains. Consequently the Lamloch waters tend to be clearer and more acid than those of the main Botvlei. It carries a denser cover of typical wetland vegetation communities than the larger
Botvlei, but these vegetated portions are interspersed with wide open water areas. When the mouth at Kleinmond is open and seawater penetrates eastwards into the Lamloch Swamps, they take on an important estuarine function. Recruitment of marine fish into Botvlei via the Lamloch Swamps and Rooisand can, however, only occur when water levels in the entire system are very high. Of particular interest is the fact that a troop of wild horses has survived here for close on 100 years. 4.The connection with the sea via the estuary at Kleinmond is of vital importance to the ecological functioning of the entire coastal aquatic system, especially when water levels are high. The system has evolved in such a manner that at times of flood, very high volumes of water drain from the main Botvlei into the sea via the mouth at Kleinmond. This scouring action prevents accumulation of sediments in the Rooisand-, Lamlochand Kleinmond components of the system. Repeated artificial opening of the main Botvlei directly to the sea over many years by means of breaching of the beach near Hawston, inhibits this natural scouring mechanism. The consequent accumulation of sediments is leading to progressive deterioration and accelerated reed growth in both the Lamloch Swamps and Kleinmond Lagoon. This reed growth has now reached a stage where natural water exchange between the aquatic system and the sea is being seriously jeopardized. This represents a serious threat to the ecology of the entire aquatic system. 5.For these reasons the main Botvlei should never be regarded as an independent body of water, but rather as a key component of the complex Botvlei/Rooisand/ Lamloch/ Kleinmond coastal aquatic system. The constant interaction between four such discrete components of one coastal aquatic system renders it unique in southern Africa. Besides its very high scenic values, the exceptional habitatand biological diversity which it offers, deserves international recognition and, as already mentioned, it represents a cardinally important aquatic
component of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. Its effective management and sustainable protection, places heavy responsibility on municipal-, provincialand central governmental levels, on all landowners in its vicinity and on independent conservation bodies such as the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve Company, WWF, and the Whale Coast Conservation Foundation. THREATS TO THIS COMPLEX COASTAL AQUATIC SYSTEM: The threats which human activities pose to this system can be divided into five categories: 1.Urban development, which mainly stems from the villages of Bot River, Fisherhaven, Hawston and Kleinmond. Sound environmental management of these urban nodes is important if undesirable consequences such as (a) habitat destruction, especially of wetland filters and sponges; (b) pollution stemming mainly from roads and properties; (c) changes in groundwater levels due to boreholes and hardening of surfaces (roofs; roads, driveways etc.); (d) introduction of alien vegetation displacing indigenous fynbos; (e) trampling and littering due to recreational activities; (f) uncontrolled spreading of informal townships, are to be avoided. 2.Estate development (e.g. Arabella & Benguela Cove): The threats are similar to those from urban development, except that private estates are usually more tightly controlled and managed. Current environmental legislation demands strict application of EIA procedures before development starts. It is also not in the interests of estate developers to damage or destroy the environment or aesthetic values upon which the success of their investment/s hinges. It should be noted though, that Benguela Cove also has extensive vineyards bordering directly on the main water body of Botvlei – see ‘Agriculture’ below. 3.Agriculture: Where agricultural activity is not well managed it can lead to destruction of natural vegetation, wetlands and river edges; soil erosion and Cont. on page. 14

Young men from Bangladesh United Nations of Hangklip/ Kleinmond se Verenigde Nasies In die upcoming weeks, the Overstrand Herald will be running a series of articles on the variety of residents in our area. As the reporter is a woman, she will be interviewing women from as many cultures and backgrounds as are willing. We don’t intend to put people on the spot if they perhaps do not have the proper papers to be here. That is not our intention or our job. We want to celebrate the variety and diversity of cultures in Hangklip/ Kleinmond. Another culture represented in our town are numerous, mostly men from Bangladesh. Officially the People’s Republic of Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It shares land borders with India and Myanmar (Burma). Nepal, Bhutan and China are located near Bangladesh, but do not share a border with it. The country’s maritime territory in the Bay of Bengal is roughly equal to the size of its land area. Bangladesh is the world’s eighth most populous country. Dhaka is its capital and largest city, followed by Chittagong, which has the country’s largest port. Bangladesh forms the largest and easternmost part of the Bengal region. Bangladeshis include people from a range of ethnic groups and religions. Bengalis, who speak the official Bengali language, make up 98% of the population. Most of Bangladesh is covered by the Bengal delta, the largest delta on earth. The country has 700 rivers and 8,046 km (5,000 miles) of inland waterways. Highlands with evergreen forests are found in the northeastern and southeastern regions of the country. Bangladesh has many islands and coral reefs. The longest unbroken sea beach, Cox’s Bazar Beach, is located here. It is home to the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world. The country’s biodiversity includes a vast array of plant and wildlife, including the critically endangered Bengal tigers, the national animal. (Wikipedia) Two young men from Bangladesh, working in one of our local shops are Emon and Riyad. Emon has been in Kleinmond for 2 months, whereas Riyad has been in the country for 3 years. Both young men speak Bengali as well as English.

users is of pivotal importance so that management procedures can be instituted without generating resentment in local communities. •Management of the entire aquatic system needs to be carried out on a collaboratively planned and executed basis. This has already happened to a substantial degree through the Bot River Advisory Committee which was established by the Provincial Nature Conservation Department some 10 years ago with the purpose of collating all available scientific evidence to make management recommendations, especially on controversial issues such as artificial opening of the main Botvlei. This work is now being taken further by the Bot River
Estuary Forum (BREF) as a requirement of the Integrated Coastal Management Act. •There is an urgent necessity for co-operation with all surrounding landowners. They need to be informed and consulted in management decisions affecting the system as a whole. Results which can be achieved through this approach are illustrated by the establishment of the Rooisand Nature Reserve in which Arabella Country Estate played a major role. •As for all estuaries and coastal aquatic systems, sound catchment management is of cardinal importance. Collaboration with the industrial and agricultural sectors needs to be sought. This is another important role for BREF. •Acquisition of sensitive components of the aquatic system for permanent protection is of obvious importance. At the time of writing, the importance of enlarging the Rooisand Nature Reserve so as to ensure protection of the essential link between the Rooisand Sand Flats and the Lamloch Swamp Wetlands, has come into sharp focus. IN CONCLUSION: Fortunately, efforts at various levels to protect this unique coastal aquatic system are well under way. As such the biological and habitat diversity which the system offers, its scenic attributes and its immense economic value – regionally, nationally and to the local communities - are fully recognized. The efforts of BREF in providing authoritative and meaningful advice to the responsible authorities, deserves every support. Dr Allan E. F. Heydorn

Kickstart your career in 120 hours (or less) Short courses continue to gain popularity with career-minded individuals seeking to boost their prospects, as well as with those who want to study but are not able to do so full time, an education expert says. “In our tough economic climate, employers – from small startups to major corporations – want to be sure that people are equipped to carry out the roles they need performed. Sometimes this requires a specific qualification but often, particularly after graduation or once a person is already working, a short course that is recent, relevant and specific is a far better indicator that the person has current skills than a qualification achieved years ago,” says Peter Kriel, General Manager of The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education provider. A short course normally takes anything between 8 hours for a workshop to a few months to complete. The time varies, but what is normally needed is between 8 and 120 hours of commitment from the person - although some are considerably longer. Today, many short courses are offered online, but there remains an ongoing interest in those that are presented face-to-face in groups, as it is hard to match the interaction, collaboration and networking achieved in this way, says Kriel. He says that in a recent review of the short courses that continue to attract enrolments on a face-to-face basis, The IIE’s key providers of short courses, Vega School and The Business School at Varsity College, confirmed that most students enrolled with the aim to ensure their skills were up-to-date and immediately applicable in the workplace, as it improved their career prospects. “There is a direct correlation between the demand for short courses and the corporate world demand on staff to quickly take up a new role or responsibility. This is where short courses come into their own, as they give ambitious people what they need when they need it and in an immediately implementable way,” says Kriel. He says the most popular short courses at the moment are: BUSINESS MANAGEMENT “Short courses in business
management remain very popular with those individuals who are progressing up the ladder at work and feel the need for a sound and quick exposure to key functional areas of responsibility for managers. Many may go on to do more formal education or already have a foundation that they are consolidating, but we see a strong correlation between workplace opportunities and enrolment in this short course,” says Kriel. MARKETING MANAGEMENT “In a tough economic environment, many existing managers and others recognise the potential that an ability to analyse and solve marketing challenges gives to achieving strategic advantage for businesses and for themselves. Small business owners understand the need to market effectively, but do not always know how. Finally, those with a sales background find that a foundation in marketing is an effective way to broaden their value to employers and enhance their earnings,” says Kriel. PROJECT MANAGEMENT Given the complexity of virtually all environments, project management methodology continues to gain traction as a core competency for those who want to help move a company forward effectively and efficiently. There is broad recognition these days that project management is a skillset that can be taught and, if applied well, can result in success in difficult situations. “As a result, we are not surprised that this course, which gives core skills to those who are required to plan and complete projects in time and on budget continues to be one of the most popular,” Kriel notes. SUPPLY CHAIN & LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT Similarly, more and more managers understand that logistics and supply chains can make or break a growing business and thus the demand for training in this core function continues to grow, Kriel says. BRAND MANAGEMENT IN A DIGITAL WORLD “We are equally not at all surprised”, he says, “that several of our short courses that embrace technology for improved effectiveness are experiencing a surge in
enrolments. These include short courses in Digital Brand Strategy, Desktop Publishing and Design, Web Design, Copywriting for Brands, Gamification in Brand Building and Strategic Brand Leadership. Companies that do not embrace these opportunities find their growth stalled and more and more people in small, medium and large businesses want the skills to manage their own brands in a digital world.” Kriel says there is no doubt that short courses are now very much focused on career progression and new skills, and that very few people have the personal resources or can get funded by their employers for ‘vanity courses’ only focused on personal growth. This is because of the state of the
economy, but also because of the rapidly changing demands in the working world. “Boosting your career, or getting a foot in the door, doesn’t always require full-time study over several years,” says Kriel. “Employers reward staff and seek new candidates who can demonstrate that they have achieved a solid grounding in a specific niche field, and that they are able to perform specific duties from the word; go. Short courses are therefore a fantastic option for those people who need to upskill or wide-skill within a limited time, whose time for studies is limited, or who need to demonstrate that they can meet a business’ need right away.”
Let’s celebrate our diversity on 1 September! Overstrand Municipality invites everyone to join them in observing Casual Day on Friday, 1 September in support of people living with disabilities. The theme for this year’s Casual Day is ‘CELEBRATE DIVERSITY’. You can wear anything you would never otherwise dream of wearing, apart from your front door - funny, fancy or any utterly ridiculous sports attire. Alternatively, you could opt to wear your traditional attire or national dress. The trick is to do it all with a splash of green to remind us of summer grass, positive growth, hope, fun, and
celebrating who we are. Residents are invited to dress up and join in the festivities, by wearing the official R10.00 Casual Day sticker which shows their support for persons living with disabilities. Casual Day stickers can be purchased from the Municipality’s communications team at R 10.00 per sticker. • Overstrand Municipality is supporting Camphill School in Hermanus and the Overstrand Association for Persons with Disabilities (OAPD) through the funds raised by the sale of stickers this Casual Day

Women can’t ‘hold up half the sky’ unless they take care of themselves South-African women are indispensable, both in the workplace and in the lives of their families, and frequently prioritise their working and caring roles above their own health and wellness needs. This Women’s Month productivity expert Lizette Bester appeals to women to take some time for themselves. “Many women expend a considerable amount of time and energy on their careers and on top of this take care of their children and perform domestic duties, which are in themselves fulltime jobs. Since there are only so many hours in a day, some women tend to put off their own wellness needs in favour of attending to the needs of others,” observes Bester, who is an executive of integrated employer solution provider: Agility Corporate. “The pace of life these days is frenetic for many people, and this means that too often we put off routine health checks, including preventative screenings and dental check-ups, as we feel that we do not have time to invest in ourselves. We may also feel there is not enough time for us to exercise several times a week, or even take some time out to relax and recentre ourselves.” Bester notes that preserving one’s own good health is in no way selfish, as it is also beneficial to all the people who rely on the individual. “If you are not taking care of your own wellness needs, you cannot perform at your best and this has implications for your work performance and your loved ones.” “If we do not actively take steps to protect and promote our health, there is a greater likelihood of suffering a major health problem at a later stage. This could then require lengthy recovery periods, or lead to even worse consequences that we don’t dare think about.” Stress management A significant aspect of selfcare is managing day-to-day stress, as sustained stress causes our bodies to release high concentrations of cortisol. This stress hormone regulates adrenal functions and particularly, how the body reacts to stressful circumstances. “At this time of year, many of us feel run down and have not taken a break since
Easter, or even before, and may only have an opportunity to do so again at the end of the year. This can exacerbate even moderate stress, which may take its toll on other areas of our health,” Bester observes. “Our health experts point out that there are potentially dangerous consequences when we do not manage stress effectively, including blood sugar imbalances, heightened blood pressure, impaired immune function and insomnia, which in turn may trigger certain psychological problems.” Leading a healthy lifestyle can go a long way towards safeguarding physical and psychological wellbeing, and this should include regular vigorous exercise and a nutritious balanced diet. “Exercise is a remarkable stress buster, as it not only provides a physical release to counteract stress hormones, but it also stimulates the body to produce feel-good hormones called endorphins. Other benefits of exercise include boosted energy levels and better concentration. It can also help to reduce the risk of developing various non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiovascular conditions and even certain types of cancer.” According to Bester, employers who want to get the best out of their workforce should take measures to educate staff about the need for work-life balance, through reinforcing the importance of exercise and relaxation. “For employers looking to help their staff manage stress, interventions can be as simple as encouraging exercise during lunch breaks, providing access to counselling via a provider or more holistic counselling services to assist with psychosocial, financial and legal sources of stress. These interventions may be complemented with wellness days, where health risks are assessed.” Take care of dental and medical ‘niggles’ “Too often, when women notice a change in their body, the way they have been feeling, or perhaps notice that they have developed what they perceive to be a relatively minor
Overstrand Herald dental problem emerging, they may put off seeking healthcare until they experience pain or until the problem becomes worse. This often means that treatment takes longer, is more costly and, in some cases, may ultimately be less successful. “With mothers, I would ask them whether they would follow this approach if they noticed something similar affecting their child’s wellbeing. For example, you might put off seeing a dentist if you chipped one of your teeth – but would you not have this attended to immediately if it happened to one of your children? You need to take care of yourself just as attentively as you take care of your children.” Bester warns that dental problems can lead to other serious health concerns. “Infections in the mouth, such as an abscess or gum disease, place strain on the entire immune system. There appears to be some evidence that gum disease may be related to heart disease. In any case, regular dental checkups are very important.”
17 Augustus 2017 Empower yourself with regular health screenings Bester encourages women to seize Women’s Month to attend to any little health niggles by having their routine preventative health checks. “Don’t put off having your pap smear or mammogram, do it now because it is simply too easy to procrastinate, and these tests may save your life. Have your moles checked, as well as your eyesight, your blood sugar and cholesterol levels – take a little time for yourself and this will put you in the best possible position to protect your long-term health,” she urges. “This Women’s Month, we encourage women to make a commitment to themselves to optimise their health. Invest time in yourself, take better care of your wellbeing needs and put yourself first for a change. Not only will this help you to feel like you can take on the world, it will also ensure you are on top of your game in your home and working life too,” Bester concluded.

The focus of the therapy resolves around nerve pressure points. When a nerve centre is damaged the muscle surrounding it, goes into spasm to protect that area. It also pulls vertrebra towards each other, putting stress on the discs which in turn puts more pressure on the spinal nerve system. What these spasm also do, is pull the body alignment out. By focusing on these nerve points and stimulating it by hand, you relief the spasm and align the body.

Sy pa, Jan Gerber, was onderwyser by die hoërskool. Hy was bekend vir sy strengheid.

Overstrand Herald 028 271 3394 Bird flu confirmed in Western Cape 17 The Western Cape Department of Agriculture has confirmed the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian influenza (HPAI), type H5N8, in two ostrich farms in the Heidelberg area. Avian influenza is a controlled disease in terms of the Animal Diseases Act, 35 of 1984. At this stage, it appears that the incidence has been confined to the two properties. Farms within 3km of the affected farms will be placed under quarantine and testing in the surrounding areas will continue. No decision to cull has been taken and discussions are ongoing. It is suspected that wild birds are the source of the infection. Thirteen outbreaks have occurred in South Africa since June this year, in Mpumalanga and Gauteng. The outbreaks involved seven commercial chicken farms, two groups of backyard chickens, three sets of wild birds and one group of domestic geese. Avian influenza is a viral respiratory disease of birds believed to be transmitted by wild migratory birds. In Southern Africa, the H5N8 strain of the disease also
affected the poultry industry in Zimbabwe, where thousands of commercial birds have died or had to be culled. This strain of the virus has so far shown no sign of being infectious to people. Constant monitoring of exposed people in South Africa has supported this. Ostrich and chicken meat on sale in retail outlets is safe for human consumption.
08 2017 17 Augustus - 13 September
R193.80
Avian Influenza is primarily spread by direct contact between healthy and infected birds, or through indirect contact with contaminated equipment or other materials. The virus is present in the faeces of infected birds and in discharges from their noses, mouth and eyes. The virus can spread into domestic flocks kept outdoors through faecal contamination from wild birds, whereas infection among indoor flocks is spread via airborne discharges and faeces. There is currently no preventive vaccine or treatment for HPAI H5N8. Current practice in most regions of the world requires the culling of infected birds.
