Shake-up in local security industry Ria Burrows Kleinmond – A new entity is emerging, based on the vision of two individuals with a combined experience of 38 years in safety and security in the Hangklip-Kleinmond area. Safe Security Kleinmond and Sandown Bay Security CC will merge during August 2017. Brian van der Merwe of Safe Security has bought Sandown Bay Security CC from Chris de Vos, and the new enterprise will be known as Sandown Bay Security. This very important move brings an end to the months of negotiations and administrative red tape to finalize their concept – all to improve our security.They both stem from the North-West – Brian from Potchefstroom and Chris from Klerksdorp. Chris spent his holidays in their family holiday home in Kleinmond since 1983. He was however, acutely aware of the security risks, especially after experiencing seven burglaries during a six-month period. Seventeen years ago he decided to renovate the holiday home and move to Kleinmond. He established Sandown Bay Security during the year 2000. Brian has been in Kleinmond for the past 20 years, after purchasing the dormant Kleinmond Security Systems CC from Riaan Noordman, who conducted business under the name of Ocean Electronics. In 1999 Brian was invited to close a deal with Safe Security in Hermanus and thereafter he could market his services under the Safe Security banner. Safe Security comprised Hermanus, Kleinmond, Gansbaai and Somerset West with a common Control Room in Hermanus – the largest privately owned security entity in the Overberg. Brian was however not
in control of his client information stream, it was in the hands of Safe Security, until the merge was conceptualized and completed. Hoewel die sekuriteitsbedryf vir ‘n paar jaar gestagneer het, raak dit nou totaal toekomsgerig, en sal dit later ook meer koste-effektief raak. The operational offices of the new Sandown Bay Security will include a dedicated Control Room and technical facility, located at 44 Main Road, while the financial hub will remain at 4 Botriver Road, across from the Spar centre. This is the culmination of a co-operation agreement between Brian and Chris, which goes back to 2008. May the implementation of their merging be smooth for both the previous owners and the new enterprise – for this will benefit the customers as well!

Leading expert shares her insights Dr. Jenna Jambeck, an associate professor at the University of Georgia and expert in ocean plastic pollution, shared her insights with a packed audience at the Civic Auditorium in Hermanus on Monday evening, 17 July 2017, by delivering a talk titled:“Impacts of Marine Waste”. Being in South Africa to speak at the African Marine Waste Network Conference, organised by the Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) that was held in Port Elizabeth last week, the presentation formed the second of a series done by Dr Jambeck during her US State Department sponsored visit to the country. The address focussed on the impact of the enormous amount of plastic waste entering the world’s oceans on a daily basis. A key point included the fact that plastics being non bio-degradable, break down into ‘microplastics’ that either float or sink to the seabed; the latter creating huge “plastic patches” in the ocean. Ingested by marine animals, microplastics are becoming an insidious part of the marine food-chain. Whilst paying compliment to the Overstrand
for its recycling bins and the cleanliness of the beaches she visited earlier in the day, Dr Jambeck nevertheless cited local research that is finding microplastics in the stomachs of marine animals in the area. The talk was opened by Dr Tony Ribbink of the SST with a short presentation and introduction to the newly formed African Marine Waste Network. Dr Ribbink also heads up South Africa’s Hope Spots – of which the Cape Whale Coast that stretches from Rooi Els to Quin Point is one. Also on the programme were Overstrand’s Manager of Solid Waste, Johan van Taak and Senior Environmental Manager, Liezl Bezuidenhout, who afforded further insight on the dangers and negative impact of plastic bags on the environment and the ocean in the delivery of their respective presentations named “Re-Think the Bag” and “Cape Whale Coast – The Hot Spot”. Wyd gewerk vir gemeenskappe in wyke Verskeie gemeenskapsprojekte is Dinsdag op Mandeladag in die Hangklip-Kleinmond gebied met die samewerking van die wyksraadslede Fanie Krige (Wyk 10) en Grant Cohen (Wyk 9) aangepak en afgehandel. Nie net die weerloostes onder ons het aandag gekry nie, maar ook ekonomiese ontwikkeling is ‘n hupstoot gegee en daar is na ons kosbare omgewing omgesien. Die man na wie hierdie internasionale dag vir gemeenskapswerk vernoem is, president Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela, sou waarskynlik tevrede geglimlag het oor die samewerking wat daar was om menswaardigheid en omgee vir mekaar te bevorder en die kettings van armoede te probeer breek. Onder die projekte was: Ondersteuning van die Kogelberg Biosfeerreservaatmaatskappy se opheffingsprojek by Mtimkhulu Village waar ‘n skeepsvraghouer by die groenteverbouing van die Random Harvest-koöperasie geverf is. Verf en toerusting is deur Roux Olivier van The Paint Guru beskikbaar gestel. Die jongspan is deur Madelaine Coetzee touwys gemaak hoe om plantjies te saai. Die insameling en oorhandiging deur vroue van Rooiels aan die Bambanani-crèche in die vorm van ‘n broodnodige verwarmer, kassie, mat, speelgoed, verf, musiekalbums en kontant. Dié crèche is deur Kleinmond Child Welfare geïdentifiseer wat tans die grootste behoeftes het. Die skoonmaak van Hangklip al langs die staproete van bo na onder deur ‘n groepie vrouens van Pringlebaai. Oorhandiging van komberse deur die munisipale personeel van Kleinmond-administrasie aan Child Welfare vir verspreiding in die informele nedersetting. Hulpverlening aan ‘n kleremaakkoöperasie van Overhills se informele nedersetting wat hul gewilde modeprodukte uit die Xhosa-kultuur groter blootstelling wil gee en ruimte nader aan die sakegebied soek. Opruiming van die Mooiuitsigwoongebied deur die kinders van die gebied. ‘n Bakkievrag swart sakke is na die poging van 67 minute weggery. Een van die oorsake van rommelstrooiing in dié gebied is dat inwoners nie “wheelie bins” kan bekostig nie en dat die swart sakke oopgeskeur word deur honde wanneer dit uitgesit word vir verwydering. ‘n Veertigtal sulke houers word benodig.

Nog ‘n koppie?
Beter as Televisie Ek kyk na die stories in sommige koerante en dan kan ek soms nie begryp dat daar mense is wie se lewens nie verder strek as die volgende persoon se doen en late nie. Met dié dat ek by ‘n koerant werk, is ek terdeë bewus van die verskil tussen nuus en skinder. Die een dra inligting oor en die ander wys hoe leeg en saai iemand se lewe kan wees. Ek is bewus van twee geleenthede waar ek ander mense iets gegee het om oor te praat. Nie dat dit eintlik iets was nie, daar was klaarblyklik net niks anders nie.
Toe ek op skool was, het oom Frank en tant Annie oorkant ons gewoon. Wonderlike dierbare mense sonder wie ons lewe aansienlik leer sou gewees het. Hulle het nie kinders gehad nie, en hulle slaapkamer se venster het reg op ons voordeur uitgekyk. Mettertyd het die venesiese blinding in hul slaapkamer ‘n permanente knak gehad soos hulle geloer het na wat in ons (hoogs vervelige en baie doodgewone) huishouding aan die gebeur was. Die tweede keer het ek en ‘n ander jong onderwyseres ‘n

deel van ‘n huis reg oorkant die kerk gedeel in die dorpie waar ons skool gehou het. Ken jy Porterville? Ons was op die hoek van Piet Retiefstraat en Kerkstraat aan die Hoofstraat se kant. Gits, ons het dinge gehoor waarvan ons self nie eens bewus was nie. Byvoorbeeld het ons in die personeelkamer gehoor welke registrasienommers die vorige aand voor ons woonstel geparkeer was. Hoe moes ek weet? Daar het verskeie jong manne by my en Christa kom 'call' en ons was ‘n lekker groep. Ek kan nou nog nie ‘n registrasienommer onthou nie, dus was ek altyd in die duister oor welke voertuie buite gestaan het. Ter verdediging van die dorp; daar was nog net TV van laatmiddag tot 23:00. Ek het baie lekker daar skoolgehou en gewoon. Toe ek in Windhoek gewoon het, het Hannes Smith se Observer baie mense grensloos gefrustreer. Om verskeie redes, maar veral oor hy ‘n rubriek: “Die mense hoor, maar hulle sê nie”, gehad het. Ek neem aan menige egskeiding het sy begin gehad na die publikasie van ‘n voertuig se registrasienommer wat op vreemde tye voor ‘n spesifieke huis opgemerk is wanneer die een of die ander eggenoot

Daar was ook heelwat ander onwettighede wat plaasgevind het wat tot die dik glas bygedra het, maar dit was nie naastenby so sappig nie. Dit was gedurende die tyd dat die Grensoorlog geveg is, dus was daar heelwat “uitstedigheid”. Soms dink ek mense is meer gaande oor ontrouheid as oneerlikheid. Dit is waarskynlik daarom dat ‘n nuwe program (in Afrikaans nogals!) wat, soos dit my klink in Jerry Springer se voetstappe gaan volg, seker ‘n groot aanhang gaan hê. Persoonlik is ek van mening wat instemmende grootmense doen, niks met my te doen het nie, maar klaarblyklik werk dit nie so in almal se koppe nie. Ek wens soms mense wil so graag oor ander se skelmstreke na vore kom as wat hulle gretig is om ander se slaapkamerstories aan die groot klok te hang. Hoofsaaklik wens ek hulle wil ‘n lewe kry, sodat ander met húl lewe kan aangaan. Ek verkies dat my bure nie skelms, smokkelaars, bomplanters, verkragters of pedofiele is nie, baie eerder as met wie hulle kuier, hetsy wakker of slapende.

Hierdie jaar se snerpende koue winter-weer, met sneeu op die berge, het die Wes-Kaap die afgelope paar weke getref, soos Kleinmonders self kan getuig. Maar ysige winters verander nie ons mense in die dorp se warm harte teenoor diegene wat minder bevoorreg is nie. Vir die afgelope agt jaar bedien die Kleinmond sopkombuis weeksdae heerlike warm sop en gesmeerde brood aan behoeftiges. Die sopkombuis word geheel en al deur inwoners en die kerke finansieël onderhou. Geen toelaes van owerheidskant word ontvang nie. Hierdie privaat en kerk bydraes stel die sopkombuis in staat om die nodige huur vir die kombuisgeriewe, die kostes van die sop, brood en margarien te betaal. Die kerke, in samewerking met groepies vrywilligers, reël
vir die uitdeel van die sop en brood. In Junie 2017 is daar byvoorbeeld 1300 etes van sop-enbrood uitgedeel, wat beteken dat gemiddeld 62 persone per dag sop en brood ontvang het. Ons dank en waardering gaan aan die verskillende persone/ instansies en die kerke wat gedurende hierdie winter warm serpe, mussies en warm truie en baadjies uitgedeel het deur middel van die sopkombuis en die Kleinmond Hande van Deernis. Hierdie ondersteuning is van onskatbare waarde en ons gee die Here die eer vir deernis in mense se harte teenoor die wat behoeftig is in Kleinmond. Baie dankie ook aan die verskillende besighede wat die gemeenskap van Kleinmond so gereeld ondersteun. (Alice van Rooyen)

Die weeklikse rubriek deur Ilna is altyd interessante leesstof. Laasweek sin oor ʼn kommetjie gaat was geen uitsondering nie. Dit het my laat wonder wat die herkoms van die woord vir koffie is. Kan dit dalk wees dat die woord se oorsprong verband hou met die witgatboom (Boscia albitrunka)? Daar is mos van die wortels van die boom koffie gemaak by gebrek aan die egte
produk. Die boom kom juis in daardie geweste algemeen voor. Vir al wat ek weet, word dit nog deur sommige mense so benut. Dit sou wonderlik wees indien ander wat die woord ken, die vermoede kan bevestig. Indien bevestig behoort die saak onder die aandag van die Groot Woordeboek mense te Stellenbosch gebring te word. Kleinmond’s Madiba Legacy Winter Ball Kleinmond came alive this weekend as guests filtered into the Town Hall, all in eager anticipation of the Madiba Legacy Winter Ball that was staged there on Saturday evening, 22 July 2017. The occurrence was well attended and graced by esteemed guests such as the Western Cape Ministers of Human Settlements and Health, the honourable Mr Bonginkosi Madikizela and Dr Nomafrench Mbombo respectively. Also in attendance was DA Overstrand Constituency Head, MP Masizole Mnqasela, who delivered a riveting speech on the profound legacy of love, caring and service bestowed on the Country by the late and past president Nelson Mandela. Fondly regarded by many as a true icon of humanity, the MP urged attendees to draw from Tata Madiba’s lessons and, like him, to take a stand against poverty, racism, discrimination, corruption and crime. Moreover, Mnqasela said we should work together and be a part of building the nation as one where tolerance, accountability and the development of its citizens and communities remains core. The event-filled occasion steered by Programme Director, Kleinmond Ward Councillor
Grant Cohen, was also attended by Overberg Deputy Mayor Cllr Archie Klaas, Overstrand Mayor Ald Rudolph Smith and Cllrs Arnie Africa and Lindile Ntsabo. With the Winter Wonderland African theme setting a magical backdrop to some spirited dance beats provided by DJ Alvino Grant, the bidding that followed for a number of prized items under the hammer and stewardship of auctioneer extraordinaire, Mynhardt Geyer, really got the crowd going. Another highlight was the announcement that soon the town’s Postal Assistants will take possession of two new mountain bikes that would aid them in their postal delivery service in the area. This follows a campaign that saw the community rally around with the donation of one mountain bike; along with the owner of Betty’s Barista, Dominic Jackson who agreed to contribute R2 of every cup of coffee sold in the month of July towards the purchase of the other. With proceedings drawing to a close, Cllr Cohen thanked the various contributors and stakeholders for all the effort involved in making the experience such a great success. To that end, special mention was made of organiser
Petro Van Dyk and the Kleinmond Linx Committee for so ably putting the event together. “I am particularly thankful to our principal sponsor Pick ‘n Pay Hermanus, for the generous donation of 67 Winter Warmth Care Packs filled with essential foodstuffs that will be distributed to 67 of the most needy and vulnerable families identified in the Hangklip-Kleinmond community,” stated Cohen. “We are also extremely grateful to local businesses like Creation

Christmas in July Ria Burrows KLEINMOND – A beautiful gesture by an unknown sponsor - leading to a joyful and festive morning with an early Christmas spirit. This took place on Wednesday 19th of July, at Gerimed private home for the aged in Botrivier Road, Kleinmond. There was singing, a most enjoyable three-course meal, delightful mini exercise session, gifts for everyone and background entertainment provided by an accomplished pianist! The event was planned and organised by branch manager Alet Lloyd, who handled the opening words of welcome. Reading the Word was done by Rev Steven Sass, who pointed out that whilst there was no accommodation for the birth of Christ at the inn in Bethlehem, Gerimed has more than enough space. He reminded everyone to be grateful and to rejoice in the birth and life of Christ, our friend. This was followed by the singing of Christmas Carols. After enjoying the first course; a charming Marshmallow/Milo treat, an icebreaker exercise by Sue Towse from “Ageless Grace” followed. Sue’s energy and enthusiasm for health and fitness, even in the later years of life, had almost everyone moving in their chairs – from
rolling the tongue or the eyes, to clapping their hands and twitching the fingers. This was followed by the serving of the main course by members of the staff. Alet then surprised the audience with two Christmas songs in her sweet voice, accompanied by pianist Louis Swart. This was greatly appreciated, according to the applause! The enticing dessert was followed by an even greater surprise – Father Christmas presenting a handmade gift to every resident. Each gift was a small blanket, made of a special material with the name of the recipient embroidered in one of the corners. Even Marjorie Lewis, 96 year old resident, enjoyed the feel and warmth of the gift. Outsiders who quietly assisted by preparing and decorating the venue, included Ninnie du Toit and Madeleine Swart. Staff members and volunteering outsiders were nicely surprised to receive a gift from Father Christmas as well.

From A-Z at Kleinmond United Nations of Hangklip/ Kleinmond se Verenigde Nasies In die upcoming weeks, the Overstrand Herald will be running a series of articles on the variety of residents in our area. As the reporter is a woman, she will be interviewing women from as many cultures and backgrounds as are willing. We don’t intend to put people on the spot if they perhaps do not have the proper papers to be here. That is not our intention or our job. We want to celebrate the variety and diversity of cultures in Hangklip/ Kleinmond. Today we introduce two citizens of Zimbabwe, currently living in Kleinmond to our readers. Fortune and Michelle Munyaka are no strangers to clients of Sasol. Fortune says he was drawn to Kleinmond, when his
cousin, who had been working at the Strand, told his relatives and friends back in Zim what a beautiful place the Cape is. Fortune came down and started working at Pringle Bay. Shortly after Michelle followed with their baby son. Their daughter was later born here. Fortune and Michelle speak Shona in their home, but can also speak Ndebele, which is another language spoken in Zimbabwe. The fact that Ndebele and Xhosa are very similar, made is easier for the two of them to be able to communicate with Xhosaspeakers in the Western Cape. Add to this that they can also speak English, brings the number of languages that the couple speak to four. Michelle says she is currently also learning how to speak Afrikaans.

Hier is ‘n kok wie se liefde vir kook reeds in haar ouerhuis vasgelê is. Erika is gebore en getoë in Malmesbury, op die plaas Weltevrede, waar sy haar ma met kookwerk begin help het. “Ek het my liefde vir kook by haar geleer”, vertel sy. Sy het matriek voltooi aan die Hoërskool Swartland en is daarna na Maties (die Universiteit van Stellenbosch). Hier behaal sy ‘n Honneursgraad in Huishoudkunde, asook ‘n Diploma in Huishoudkundevoorligting (Volwasse Onderrig). Sy behaal ook ‘n
Diploma in Hoër Onderwys deur UNISA. Intussen ontmoet sy Cloete du Bois, ‘n onderwys en Weermagman, met wie sy vandag reeds 41 jaar gelukkig getroud is. Hulle het een seun, hy is nog ongetroud en woon in Durbanville. Erika was voorheen Streekshuishoudkundige by Kultuursake, Nasionale Opvoeding in die Oos-Kaap. Dit het volwasse-onderrig aan Damesgroepe dwarsdeur die Oos-Kaapprovinsie behels. Sy was ook betrokke by beoordeling tydens landbouskoue en VLVtakke, op sirkel-, provinsiale, sowel as nasionale vlak. Nadat hulle seun met sy skoolonderrig begin het, het sy ‘n oorplasing as Afdelingshoof: Nutsbedrywe, aan die destydse Tegniese Kollege in Port Elizabeth aanvaar. Kort daarna is sy aangestel as Adjunk-Prinsipaal aan die Russellweg-Kollege in Port Elizabeth. Aan die einde van 2005 het sy afgetree. Nadat hulle 36 jaar lank vakansies in hulle vakansiehuis in Kleinmond geniet het, het
hulle dit in 2005 verkoop en ‘n permanente huis in Bettiesbaai laat bou - en woon nou reeds 11 gelukkige jare daar. Sy geniet dit steeds om met voedselprodukte te werk en doen gereeld nog beoordeling by VLV-Konferensies. Haar ander groot liefde is haar tuin, sy geniet dit baie om in die tuin te werk; te lees en haar met huistake besig te hou
. En om sommer in die motor te klim en ons mooi land te deurkruis. “Eintlik is ek maar net ‘n gelukkige en dankbare mens”, erken sy. “Maar wat uit die verlede mis jy die meeste?” wou ons weet. “Net die spoed waarteen ek take kon verrig!”, kom die vinnige antwoord. En baie van ons sal hartlik saamstem, Erika!
ONTBYT-LASAGNE (10 porsies ) Bestanddele: 12 snye brood (beide kante gesmeer ) 250g sampioene, gebraai 250g spek, gekap en gebraai 1 ui /bossie grasuie, gekap en gebraai 4 eiers geklits saam met 750ml melk Geur met sout en peper 200g cheddar kaas, gerasper
Metode: Begin met laag brood in gesmeerde oondpan. Volg op met lae sampioene, spek en uie. Dan ‘n laag kaas, en dan weer ‘n laag brood en kaas. Sprinkel ‘n bietjie pietersielie oor indien verkies (opsioneel ) Gooi eiervla bo-oor en bedek die pan met kleefpapier. Laat oornag in die yskas staan. Bak net voor ontbyt by 180° vir ± 1uur. Bedien met ‘n varkworsie en ‘n wiggie tamatie vir ontbyt. Kan ook vir ‘n ligte middagete bedien word met worsie en ‘n groen slaai.

Notice of Intent to Burn Open Space areas in Kleinmond Overstrand Municipality 01 August 2017 - 31 July 2018 Chapters 4 and 5 of the National Veld and Forest Fire Act, 1998 (Act No. 101 of 1998) Overstrand Municipality hereby notifies Interested and Affected Parties of the intention to burn ageing and overgrown vegetation in Kleinmond area as indicated in table 1. In an effort to reduce the impact of veld fires, Overstrand Fire and Disaster Management in cooperation with Overstrand Environmental Services, embark on a program to reduce fuels loads (aged /overgrown vegetation) with the aim of better managing out of control veld fires. The identified prescribed block burn is dependent on season and weather conditions which are conducive for the burning of firebreaks or blocks. Fire safety is of utmost importance and the programme will be adapted in order to maintain safe burning conditions. This means that each prescribed burn will be carefully assessed by a committee consisting of Overstrand Fire and Disaster, Overstrand Environmental Services, Cape Nature and Overberg Fire Protection Association. A Strict criteria will be followed to ensure a safe and successful burn, should some of these identified block burns not take place it will stand over to the following year. All vehicles, ground crews, equipment and aerial support will be under the control of the Incident Commander at the Command Centre. Kennisgewing van voorneme om Oop Ruimtes in Kleinmond te brand Overstrand Munisipaliteit 01 Augustus 2017 - 31 Julie 2018 Hoofstukke 4 en 5 van die Nasionale Wet op Veld en Bosbrande, 1998 (Wet No. 101 of 1998) Hiermee stel Overstrand Munisipaliteit belanghebbende partye in kennis van die voorname om verouderde plantegroei en oorgroeide natuurlike veld in die Kleinmond oop ruimtes onder beheerde toestande te brand soos aangedui in Tabel 1. In n poging om die impakte van veldbrande te verminder het Overstrand Brand, Redding en Rampbestuur, in samewerking met Overstrand Omgewingsbestuur, begin met n program om verouderde en toegegroeide plantegroei te verminder. Môre vlieg elf leerders van Laerskool Kleinmond, wat gekies is om deel te neem aan die “International Marimba & Steel Pan Festival”, na Johannesburg. Dit is die vyfde keer dat Laerskool Kleinmond aan hierdie groot, internasionale musiekfees deelneem waar meer as 500 items gelewer word deur 87 skool orkeste van regoor Afrika. Vir baie van die leerders is dit hul eerste vliegtuigrit en almal sien daarna uit om na maande se intense oefening, by die St. Dominic’s Katolieke skool in Boksburg op te tree. Hulle word vergesel deur ouers en me. Suelene Huisamen, wat ook die afrigting gedoen het. Me Annamarie Kotze van Enlighten Trust was ook deurentyds betrokke. Die ouers van die leerders moes verskeie fondsinsamelings hou om die onkostes te dek. Die prysuitdeling is eers Sondagmiddag om 16:00, waarna die leerders ongeveer 21:30 weer terug sal wees in Kaapstad. Dit is beslis ‘n opwindende, maar ook ‘n veeleisende naweek wat voorlê.
Kleinmond Bird Club July meeting Wednesday 19th July turned out to be a pleasant but cool winter’s day, ideal for bird watching. Our chairman, expecting the worst, had organised a very pleasant indoor experience. About 22 birders gathered at Justin van den Hoven’s house to enjoy some of Justin’s extensive bird photographs. Justin had recently spent some time at Kleinmond lagoon where he had taken many pictures of our local birds. It is interesting to see the variety and numbers of our local birds at the lagoon, also the large volume of fish. I now understand why the lagoon should open naturally, as it is a fish nursery when closed. Justin had also taken some brilliant pictures of the local otters, an animal not often seen, but this is proof that they are here, probably because of the plentiful fish. Justin then showed us South-African bird pictures that were taken over the last few years. The quality, clarity and variety of these pictures are exceptional, but as he said they are the best of a large bunch. These days it’s the editing and computer work which is time consuming to produce a quality viewing. Well done and thank you Justin! The viewing was followed by tea/coffee and a selection of eating goodies provided by the ladies and a general chit chat. Our secretary presented Justin with a small gift in thanks for hosting such a successful get together. The outing ended about half past eleven. Die Overstrand Herald bied‘n spesiale rubriek waarin ons inwoners en lesers die geleentheid gee om hul eie skryfwerk met ons te deel. Daar is ‘n paar reëls: 1. Gedigte moet asb nie te lank wees nie – ruimte is beperk 2. Kortverhale of essays moet van in die kort-kortverhaal genre wees – nie meer as 800 woorde nie. 3. Dit moet jou eie werk wees. UIT VERGANGE SE DAE : VERLATE EN BENOUD Wie van ons ken tog nie die uitdrukking ‘KAMERVERLAAT’ nie, soos in; “Juffrou mag ek asseblief kamerverlaat?” al was die vraer op daardie oomblik nie in die klaskamer nie of dalk buite tydens ʼn liggaamsoefeninge periode, of besig met ʼn rugbyoefening. Later het ’n verdere variasie op die tema gespruit soos in: “Waar is Kosie dan nou?” “Juffrou, hy het GEKAMERVERLAAT.” Nou, so het dit dan baie jare terug in 1958 gebeur, toe ek my eerste pos as hoof aan ʼn tweemanskooltjie te Glückstadt, oos van Vryheid in Noord Natal, aanvaar het. Twintig kinders, nie leerders nie, ek, die juffrou, geen sekretaresse nie, twee klaskamers, ’n kantoortjie met ’n wit geskropte greinhout tafeltjie,wat die oorgrote gedeelte van die kantoortjie vol gestaan het, ’n waskamer en twee buite toilette, nog van die emmertiepe, en ou John Nyandeni, die ewige getroue bediende, skets die nodige agtergrond van daardie tyd. Die juffrou het van klas1 tot st.2 onder haar sorg gehad, en die uwe van st.3 tot 6 – Afrikaans, Engels en Duits. Dit was regtig ’n geval van Rooi Kappie, Red Riding Hood en Rot Käpchen. Die klas eens en twees het daagliks net tot twaalfuur skool gegaan. Party van hulle, wie broers of sussies in die hoër klasse gehad het, en wie se ouers te ver geboer het om drie maal tussen 7uur soggens en 3 uur smiddae skool toe te ry om kinders af te haal, het maar ewe lekker onder die sewe-en -twintig bloekombome op die skoon geveede speelgrond gespeel, totdat die hoër klasse klaar gemaak het. Een van vele sulke middae het klein Anton van Rooyen, ’n effens teruggetrokke tog goed gemanierde klas eentjie, daar waar hy tussen dik wortels van die ou bloekomreuse karretjies gespeel het, skielik ervaar dat moeder natuur hom aanspreek, Toe hy egter by die nodige oord instap, merk hy dat hy in die moeilikheid is, en besluit daar en dan dat die enigste plek waar hy gaan hulp kry, was by meneer – daar in daardie GROOT kantoor, waar hy laas in die begin van die jaar was, toe hy die dag ingeskryf is. Dit was ’n Donderdagmiddag, al middag wat ek as hoof die geleentheid gehad het om binne normale skooltyd, amptelike administratiewe werk te kon doen, en dit slegs omdat die juffrou, wat geen vrye tyd gedurende normale skoolure gehad het nie, die hele skool van st.1 tot st.6, vir twee periodes kuns geneem het. Skielik was daar ’n sagte klop aan die deur. “Binne!” sê ek ewe plegtig. Stadig gaan die deur oop en net so stadig verskyn Anton se swart koppie en groot en wydgerekte bruin oë, wat die kantoor eers van hoek tot kant, om die deur bespeur het, terwyl vinnige, byna onopsigtelike slukbewegings van sy strottespiertjies, verklap dat hy baie benoud is. Na ’n ruk van doodse stilte vra ek: “Anton, ou seun, wat makeer?” Nog hou hy aan om orals onseker om hom heen te loer, terwyl hy sy ou tongetjie oortyd in sy mond rond stoot. “Anton,” vra ek ʼn tweede keer, “wat is fout jong?” Nog bly die benoudheid hom treiter. Skielik was daar nie meer keer nie. “Me, me, meneer, meneer,” sê hy uiteindelik stotterend, terwyl hy hard asem haal, “meneer, daar is nie KAMERVERLAATPAPIER nie.” Glo my na baie jare in die onderwys, was dit vir my ook ’n eerste, en wou-wou ek uitbars, maar moes ek my noodgedwonge inhou, waardig gedra, en my bykans onbedwonge lag beteuel, want hier was voorwaar ’n nood van die dringendste aard. Ewe ernstig en met die grootste respek vir die outjie se penarie, sê ek toe: “Anton, loop sê jy vir ou John hy moet vir jou KAMERVERLAATPAPIER uit die stoorkamer haal. Kleinmond verloor momentum in 2de helfte Die afgelope naweek het Kleinmond weggespeel teen Napier. Die 1ste span het baie goed begin met uitmuntende skrumwerk wat Napier onder geweldige druk geplaas het. Kleinmond het baie geleenthede gekry om pale toe te skop en Uwin Cedras het hom goed van sy taak gekwyt met sy skopwerk. Die telling was 20 – 28 met Napier wat voorloop teen rustyd. In die tweede helfte het Napier verbete geveg vir hul oorwinning. Die verdediging het ongelukkig inmekaar getuimel en Napier kon aanhoudend punte aanteken. Kleinmond het moedig probeer terugveg, maar verloor die wedstryd 56 – 32. Die 2de span het die wind en reën trotseer om goeie spel te lewer. Hulle kon egter nie die wedstryd wen nie, omdat hulle te veel balbesit weggeskop het. Die eindtelling was 24 – 10 vir Napier. Hierdie naweek vind daar geen rugby deur Kleinmond Rugbyklub plaas nie. Young Eagles het uit die liga onttrek, wat beteken dat Kleinmond 5 punte kry. Daar was ook Saterdag ‘n sportdag op Kleinmond wat deur die Munisipaliteit aangebied is. Dit was slegs vir o/17's en die tuisspan het baie goed gevaar om die finaal van die toernooi te wen. Op 5 Augustus is daar ‘n groot sportdag wat op Kleinmond sportveld plaasvind waartydens die jaarlikse o/19 toernooi sal afspeel. Daar is ook groot wedstryde wat deel gaan maak van die dag. Die munisipale span sal teen die vissermanne te staan kom. Die Kleinmond Legends wat uit ou spelers bestaan, sal ook op die dag speel. Wedstryde sal reeds om 10:00 begin. Groot pryse is op die spel. Kleinmond Rugbyklub wil graag vir mnr en me Koegelenberg bedank vir die borg van ‘n geraamde Stormers trui wat ons elke naweek gaan uitloot tydens die wedstryde teen R20 per lootjie. Kleinmond krieket seisoen vergadering Die aanvang van die 2017/2018 krieket seisoen is op ons. Soos in die verlede wil Kleinmond Krieket Klub alle belanghebbendes en potensiële spelers uitnooi om die eerste jaarvergadering by te woon. Indien daar van die ouer(of jonger) garde is wat in ‘n afrigter of ondersteunerskapasiteit wil bywoon, is ook welkom. Ons moet dié jaar bou op vorige suksesse en al ons beskikbare talent in die dorp benut. Die vergadering sal op 1 Augustus om 18:30 by Guthrie & Theron se kantore plaasvind. The 2017/2018 Season kicks off soon. Any interested players, young or old, are invited to attend the season’s first general meeting on the 1st of August. We urge everyone who intends to participate this year to attend the meeting. We want to utilize all the available talent in Kleinmond to build on the previous season’s successes. Aspiring coaches and any person who wants to make a contribution (off the pitch) is also welcome to attend. The meeting is scheduled for 18:30 at the offices of Guthrie & Theron.
