Kleinmond se groot omgee! Ria Burrows KLEINMOND – Die huis in Vierdelaan wat oor die naweek bykans onherstelbare brandskade, veral aan die dak opgedoen het, het weer eens die ongelooflike hulpvaardigheid en samewerking van die dorp se inwoners geïllustreer. Die eienaars van die huis - Eric en Mariëtte van der Watt - is oorweldig deur die onmiddellike hulp en simpatie van omstanders, bure, vriende en vreemdes. Mariëtte, in geleende klere, het die volgende oggend verklaar: “Geen woorde kan beskryf hoe Kleinmond se mense saamgestaan het om ons te help en ondersteun nie – dadelik, vanaf die eerste vlamme!” Hulle woon tans in die gemeubileerde huis van Louis van der Merwe, soos deur welmenende vriende vir hulle gereël is. Eric vertel hoe hy aan die agterkant van die huis sy braaivleisvuurtjie lekker op dreef gekry het toe hul hondjie, Spyker, skielik hard en dringend vanuit die huis begin blaf het. Eers toe hy gaan ondersoek instel het hy rook in die voorste vertrek, hul slaapkamer, opmerk. Hy het summier omgedraai en water gaan haal om enige vlamme te blus, maar met sy terugkeer was die kamer gevul met rook en ‘n hittewalm wat die voorste deel van sy gesig en voorkop diep geskroei het. Die vlamme was reeds besig om die gordyne te verswelg en het vinnig na die bed versprei. Die kamer met alles daarin, is totaal vernietig. “Met al ons klere, skoene, familiefoto’s en al my juwele, insluitend ‘n

besondere stel pêrels vanaf my dogter. Al ons skilderye en die vensterblindings het gesmelt”, vertel Mariëtte. Die vloere aan die voorkant van die huis is onlangs met Oregan Pine oorgedoen, maar dit is nou met swart roet besaai of totaal verbrand. Wat wel gered is, is hulle persoonlike en ander belangrike dokumente, wat gelukkig in die agterste deel van die huis was. Twee vorige kollegas van Mariëtte was vir die naweek in hul onderskeie strandhuise, wat naby die Van der Watts se huis geleë is. Erna Penning en Mariëtte Barends het die rook gesien en was eerste op die toneel. Jac van der Spuy het dit ook gesien en dadelik die brandweer gekontak. Omstanders het met brute krag die twee motors uit die garage gedra toe die sleutels onbereikbaar was. Die omgee het nie opgehou nie – klere, beddegoed en eetgoed is aangedra, etes vir die volgende dae is gereël, geldvoorskotte en selfs ‘n oop garage vir stoorplek is aangebied. Hulle bekommerde kinders is gerusgestel en die held in die verhaal, Spyker, het weer ‘n knus slaapplekkie in die nuwe blyplek gekry! Eric en Mariëtte het die Herald versoek om aan al die omstanders, vriende en vreemdes wat in hierdie krisis so vinnig en onvoorwaardelik hulp en bystand verleen het, van hulle opregte dank te verseker. Mariëtte, die entoesiaste stigter van die klerehulpprojek ‘Omgee Boutique’, ervaar nou self die ‘omgee’ van ander mededeelsame en liefdevolle Kleinmonders!

“The Mayor must go” – ANC HERMANUS - A motion of no-confidence in Overstrand’s mayor, mnr Rudolph Smith, was easily defeated during yesterday’s monthly council meeting by 15 to 7 votes. There was one spoiled ballot, believed to be that of EFF councillor, Mr Benet Molefe. Tabling the motion during Wednesday’s council meeting, ANC whip, Mr Simphiwe Tebele accused the Mayor of having no vision or strategy for the municipality. He said Mr Smith has failed to show leadership. The Mayor has failed the people of Pearly Beach, of Buffelsjag, of Blompark in Gansbaai, of Kleinmond, Tebele said. He told the council that while Kleinmonders were rioting Mr Smith kept saying let the police do their work. “He was supposed to take leadership and face the music. We offered to help in Kleinmond. He said no: I do not trust the ANC.” Tebele acussed the Mayor of being baised towards Hawston and his own community. “Everything has to do with Hawston. He is here for Hawston and not the Overstrand.

We have no confidence in this mayor. He has no hart for our people, no sympathy for our people.” He allowed children in Kleinmond to be teargassed. What about the suffering of the people of Kleinmond?” In a somewhat unenergetic response the deputy mayor, Mr Dudley Coetzee (DA), said the leadership style of Mr Smith differed from his predecessors. He said Mr Smith preferred to work through his mayoral committee and councillors. “To say the mayor sits behind the deputy mayor shows total ignorance,” he said. Tebele retorted by saying that that mayor had no negotiating skills, or vision to take the Overstrand into the future. “Where are the plans for creating job opportunities? A motion of no-confidence in the council’s speaker, Mr Anton Coetsee (DA) was also defeated by majority vote. The third motion the ANC brought concerned a land audit. Kleinmonders soek oplossings Gerard Grobler KLEINMOND – Die onlangse geweld in die dorp het baie inwoners geskok en kwaad gemaak. Mense se lewens, die sakesektor en munisipaliteit is tot stilstand geruk en derduisende rande se skade is aangerig. Op die oog af wil dit voorkom asof die geweld aangedryf is deur die frustrasie van inwoners van Over-Hills met die munisipaliteit. Daar word baie bespiegel dat die onrus deel van ‘n groter plan is om die Wes-Kaap te destabiliseer en deur buitestaanders aangevuur word, maar buiten teorieë, kon niemand nog met enige bewyse hiervan vorendag kom nie. Hoe dit ookal sy, die geweldadige protesaksie het ons dorp en sy beeld na buite, groot skade aangedoen en rasseverhoudinge versuur. Die vraag is hoe verhoed ons dat so iets weer gebeur. Kom ons aanvaar vir die oomblik dat die hele kwessie rondom die toekenning van ‘n skoonmaaktender die laaste strooi en aanvanklike oorsaak van die geweld was. Normaalweg sou probleme soos hierdie by die wykskomitees opgeduik, en hopelik daar besleg gewees het. Ons munisipale stelsel is so ontwerp dat die wykskomitees die spreekbuis van die gemeenskap na die munisipaliteit behoort te wees, Daar is twee wykskomitees op die dorp, een vir elkeen van die twee afgebakende stemwyke op die dorp. Wyk 10 sluit Over Hills, Proteadorp en Palmiet in terwyl wyk 9 die res van die dorp beslaan. Die wykskomitees is statutêre organisasies wat een keer ‘n maand byeenkom met die wyksraadslid en amptenare en dan sake bespreek waarby die gemeenskap ‘n belang het. Elkeen van die wykskomiteelede word maandeliks ‘n klein bedraggie geld betaal om die vergadering by te woon. Die komitees het ook elkeen ‘n klein begroting van ‘n paar honderdduisend rand. Die komitee besluit oor hoe dié geld aangewend moet word. Die werklik groot besluite word egter deur die amptenary en uiteiendelik die raad geneem. Die wykskomitees is in effek

slegs ‘n soort advieskomitee vir die betrokke raadslid, sonder enige werklike tande of besluitnemingsmagte. Die tenderkwessie was nooit werklik by enige van die wykskomitees ter sprake nie om die eenvoudige rede dat die komitees nie waarlik verteenwoordigend is nie. Die komitees lyk goed op papier, maar voldoen in die praktyk nie aan al die verwagtinge nie. Al die gemeenskappe is nie verteenwoordig nie, dus kan hulle nie werklik namens die gemeenskap praat nie. Op hierdie punt moet ‘n mens darem sê dat daar al talle pogings was om mense uit die bruin en swart gemeenskappe te betrek, maar dat dit was nog nooit werklik suksesvol was nie. Sou ‘n meer verteenwoordigende liggaam ‘n verskil kon maak, en indien wel, hoe sou so ‘n organisasie lyk? Daar is die afgelope week of twee baie hieroor gedink en die volgende gedagtes het na vore gekom. Die eerste uitdaging is om ‘n beginpunt te kry. Daar is geen bestaande resep nie, want dit is, sover ek weet, nog nêrens elders in die provinsie probeer nie. Die gedagte is om aanvanklik, kom ons noem dit maar ‘n gespreksgroep van sowat 20 mense, byeen te kry. Die idee is om min of meer ses mense uit elkeen van die swart, wit en bruin gemeenskappe na die aanvanklike vergadering, aan die einde van Oktober, te nooi. Dié mense sal, sover moontlik, genooi word op grond van verteenwoordigende sektore in die onderskeie gemeenskappe. In die blanke gemeenskap kan ‘n mens dink in terme van die kerke, die sakesektor, Kleinmond Straatwag met sy oor die duisend lede, die VLV wat vroue verteenwoordig ens. Dieselfde geld die swart en bruin gemeenskappe. Over Hills het sy komitee, maar daar is ook sakemense, sokkerklubs ens. Proteadorp het sy kerke, rugbyklub, sakemense en anders gemeenskapsleiers. Die twee plaaslike raadslede en die areabestuurder, mnr Desmond Lakey, is outomaties deel van die gesprek.

Die idee sou dan wees dat hierdie gespreksgroep met die hulp van ‘n gespreksleier hul belangrikste kwelpunte en verwagtinge op die tafel sit. Miskien sou ‘n mens kon begin deur ‘n verbintenis, ‘n soort sosiale pakt, deur die gemeenskapleiers om probleme vreedsaam te probeer oplos en te werk daaraan om verhoudinge tussen die onderskeie gemeenskappe en ook die munisipaliteit en die gemeenskap te probeer verbeter. Dan sou jy moontlik die onderskeie groepe kon vra om byvoorbeeld hul 5

Municipality is a “White Boys Club”, says Ehrenreich KLEINMOND Western Cape COSATU leader, Tony Ehrenreich and the Overstrand Municipality are at loggerheads again. According to a press release issued on his behalf, Ehrenreich had to appear in the Caledon magistrates court on 14 September to answer a charge of occupying his premises without a building occupation certificate. The trade union leader, who owns a home in 11th Avenue, has had several run ins with the Municipality and what he calls “conservative elements” in town. In the press release the Municipality is accused of forcing Ehrenreich to evict the African family that stays in the completed outhouse on his property. “Many of the neighbours have gladly accepted the African family in the area, but some of the conservatives have not been happy about this”. Ehrenreich says he refuses to be like some of the elite in society, both black and white, who let their

holiday properties that have all the amenities stand vacant, when it can provide a shelter to a family in need. He believes he has taken all reasonable steps to comply with the requirements of council and that he is being “hounded” out of the area. Mayoral Committee Member for infrastructure and planning, Cllr David Botha replied as follows: “All building work has to comply with the National Building Regulations and Standards Act and the National Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act. Mr Ehrenreich erected structures on his property that encroach on building lines and without approved buiding plans. The buildings are also occupied without the required occupation certificate. These irregularities were brought to the attention of Mr Ehrenreich for the first time on 30 March 2016. Since the issues have not been rectified as yet, the matters were handed over to the courts to be resolved.”

Dan sê jy nog, Meneer, die vis is duur. Dié vrede, kalmer as ‘n stil, soet kind, lyk of dit dae, dae lank sal duur. Maar word dié bries ‘n bulderende wind, dan veg jy vir jou lewe, uur na uur. En jy sê nog, Meneer, die vis is duur. Ja, sleep die swart, swart wind die swart nag mee, waar kry ons hulp dan, waar’s ons naaste buur? Die Dood staan voor die deur. Geen hy nog net één tree,

Verder weet ek verseker, indien ek op een van die skuitjies moes klim om, soos my voorsate, uit Frankryk of Duitsland na die verre punt van Afrika te moes vaar, het ek net daar gebly. Ek is baie dankbaar die Retiefs, Du Preez’s en Kochs het dit in hulself gevind om die see aan te durf in daardie proppies wat seilskepe was, maar ek sou dit nie kon doen nie. Miskien is dit omdat ons nou weet wat op die mense wag wat hul lewe op die see waag, en kennis het van hoe ‘n Kaapse storm kan raak, maar steeds is ek bly dit was nie ek nie. Ek is trots op waar ek vandaan kom, maak nie ‘n fout nie, maar nie meer ten bloede toe, soos die mense van destyds nie. Sommige van hulle sou my erg kwalik geneem het hieroor, maar indien ons nog nie geleer het om dinge sonder bloedvergieting reg te kry nie, het ons nog niks geleer nie.

Pringle Bay hackers help Municipality

The Kleinmond Kingdom Vibration Choir performed this past Monday at Mthimkhulu Village for their Heritage Day celebrations.

In the beginning of September, the Overstrand Municipality tried to clear the verges in Hangklip Road in Pringle Bay. In the process, the Pringle Bay Hack Group realized that the workers were unwittingly destroying all possible Fynbos in that area. They finally managed to stop the workers and indicated that the Pringle Bay Hack Group would clear the area of alien vegetation. On 24 September, Heritage Day 2017, the group invested in their heritage and cleared several areas along Hangklip, Rita and Elizabeth Roads. They tackled mostly Australian Myrtle, a few Rooikrantz and Port Jacksons. They had fulfilled their commitment. The following 21 members performed the hack; Louw and Karen Toerien, Freddie, Marita Grobbelaar, Charles Hector, Dave Muirhead, Frik Potgieter, Rienie Schenk, Robyn Lawson, Richard Smeda, Hillary Harris,

Mike Meyer, Pieter Snyman, Willem Stiglingh, Bernard van Wulven, Jeannie Harning as well as Chris Geldenhuys. The Pringle Bay Hack was joined by Keith and Di Foster as future hackers. Caroline Schenk also visited for the first time and the hackers wish to see them again at the next hack. They also received a visit by Alrich, with a good spurt of energy from Gauteng. The next monthly hack will be on Sunday 29 October 2017. The group meets on the pavement opposite Drosters Centre, in Central Avenue, Pringle Bay, at 08:30 from where they proceed to the hack site. The hack will conclude at 11:30. Everyone wishing to help rid Pringle Bay of alien vegetation are welcome. Hacking tools are provided. Ons ledetal groei en Saterdae en Woensdae is ons bane weer vol en van almal wat die oefening en gesellige kuier op die stoep geniet. Met die groter verkeer op die bane begin die realiteit van instandhouding en die kostes daaraan verbonde al hoe meer op die voorgrond tree. Vandaar die besluit om 13 Oktober se opskop ons jaarlikse fondsinsamelingspoging te maak. Na verlede jaar se uiters genotvolle dans met die klub se 50-jarige bestaansvieringe, reël ons weer ‘n lekker lente-opskop. Soos verlede jaar is die bekwame Noeline van der Hyde weer aan stuur van sake en sal die musiek weer deur die gewilde Dippie verskaf word. Die ete sal ook weer soos verlede jaar deur die VLV voorgesit word. Die kaartjieverkope het reeds begin. Die prys van die kaartjies is ook dieselfde as verlede jaar. ’n Ander, kleiner fondsinsamelingspoging gaan vroeg in Desember plaasvind, wanneer die klub, soos wat nou al amper tradisie geword het, ons beroemde sjinese braai gaan aanbied. The risk of EFT fraud when selling a car Electronic Funds Transfers, better known as EFT’s, have become a popular payment method in South Africa, accepted by many in lieu of cash or cheque payments. This allows buyers to reverse payments and essentially fraud sellers into thinking that they’ve been paid. Many accept the printed EFT document as “proof” of a cash payment into the bank account, especially in the selling and buying of motor vehicles. They insist on the transfer to be made immediately, after which the vehicle is transferred and registered to the buyer on the same day. How do EFT’s get abused? The abuse of EFT’s made to the seller’s bank account, especially between different financial entities, is yet another devious manner in which the original Natis documentation or registration of ownership of a motor vehicle can be obtained with no intention to honour the actual payment. EFT’s are governed by agreements between the various financial entities. Depending on the agreement, an EFT transaction can take up to two days to actually reflect as a deposit on the statement of the seller. The risk of accepting proof of an EFT as “proof” of actual payment as if it was a cash deposit, puts the seller at a real risk of being defrauded. Most ordinary citizens do not know that an EFT

can be reversed within a few hours after it has been made, depending on the individual financial institute at which the account is held. Devious fraudsters who are know the mechanics of the law and the financial systems in South Africa, use this knowledge to the detriment of others. How to make payments more secure: In the sale of a motor vehicle, or any other object of which ownership is registered on the eNatis system, the Natis registration document is a very useful instrument to secure and verify payment prior to the transfer of registered ownership. The easiest safeguard against any risk of loss because of nonpayment, is the current, valid and original Natis document, reflecting the registered owner and titleholder of a vehicle. For as long as the seller of the vehicle retains the possession of the original Natis document reflecting the seller as the registered owner, no fraudster or any other person can obtain registered ownership of the vehicle, unless the seller physically enables them to do so. Once payment actually reflects on the bank statement the necessary documentation should be handed over to effect transfer of registration to the purchaser or his nominee. Should a seller hand

the original Natis registration documents over prior to actual confirmation of payment, the vehicle can be traded and registered to any innocent third party, while the seller still waits for payment. As no party to an agreement can transfer more rights than they are legally entitled to at that time, the seller will be able to claim the motor vehicle from any person who has such motor vehicle in his/her possession, even if the possessor at that stage has “purchased and paid” the vehicle. As long as the motor vehicle has not been transferred and registered to a purchaser who has not paid for same, the seller can safeguard themselves in such a fraudulent transaction. What happens if I’ve been defrauded? In the event of the payment not coming through, your rights as seller can be enforced by means of a very simple but highly effective application to a court, which can be done with an interim relief order to return the vehicle by the Sheriff of the Court to the registered owner of the car at a date on which service is to be effected on the purchaser. After that, the normal motion procedure is followed. It is also recommended to issue a summons for the cancellation of the agreement, return of the vehicle, cost and interest

simultaneously. For as long as the seller retains and holds on to the original Natis documents on which he/she is reflected as the registered owner of the motor vehicle, the seller will have a definite right to be the entitled possessor of the motor vehicle. A seller who has already caused registration of the vehicle to be transferred to the purchaser prior to having the payment secured, is left in a risky position. The seller has very little hope of success against such a buyer with the intention to defraud. A litigation process can be prolonged and costly with no guarantee of recovery of the loss. The organisers of the Whale Festival have embarked upon a major campaign to change the way ocean wildlife is perceived on the Cape Whale Coast. Their interactive exhibitions are therefore aimed at the youth, our future conservationists. Kleinmond Bird Club visits Caledon Garden Services

A determined group of keen birders turned up at the Kleinmond Library to travel to the Caledon Nature Gardens for their September outing. Although there were a few clouds, the sun was pushing through and no further encouragement was needed to get going. 23 People arrived and the birders set off in convoy, picnic baskets packed, to Caledon. Along the way two pairs and a large flock of blue cranes were seen as well as Spur-winged geese, a Yellow billed kite and Pied crows. On arrival at the reserve the birders all strolled up the path past the dam towards the mountain amongst orange and white daisies and many flowering shrubs and trees. A troop of baboons were heard and then spotted through the trees towards the top. As they hiked their way, Fiscal and Dusky flycatchers were seen, three Sunbirds namely Southern double collared, Malachite and Orange-breasted were spotted, Cape wagtail, Cape canary, Cape robin-chat, Cape sugarbird and Cape bulbul. Then there were the Fork-tailed drongo, Southern grey headed

sparrow, and Bar throated apalis. A Pin tailed whydah was noticed going into its breeding plumage and a Karoo prinia was heard. The birders report that the reserve is very green and better maintained than last year. They say it was nice to notice the black wattles being cut down. There were many spring flowers, shrubs and trees are in bloom. They returned to the convenient thatched shelters to have coffee and snacks. While there, they sighted Red winged starlings, a Jackal buzzard, Speckled mouse-birds, a Black harrier and the magnificent African harrier hawk with its catch. It was apparent that the Greater striped swallows are beginning to arrive. These swallows are very common breeding migrants, that arrive here to breed from October until January. Unforgettable were also the inevitable Hadeda ibis and Egyptian geese on their return journey. The group had had another pleasant day out. They were also very happy to welcome some new members. Kleinmond cricket on the up In what can be described as a marked improvement, the Kleinmond Cricket Team seem to be hitting it’s straps in time for the season opener on 14 October. The Club is pleased to announce Mr. Errol Van Zyl as coach for 2017/2018. The training has already assisted with the basic skills in the field, bowling and batting.

The family of Gerswin Johnson, the young 10-year old Kleinmond boy killed in August this year, were the recipients of a R1000 Spar Gift voucher at a Heritage Day occasion held at the Kleinmond Rugby Club on Sunday, 24 September 2017. There to accept the voucher from event host, Overstrand Titans Softball Club, were Gerswin’s mom (centre) and other family members. Also pictured are the Club’s chairperson, Rodrick Resandt (2nd right) along with the rest of the Titans team.

Kleinmond softball club’s ‘Mengelmoes’ Heritage Day celebration The eagerly awaited “Mengelmoes” Heritage and Braai Day fundraiser of the Overstrand Titans Softball Club that took place at the Kleinmond Rugby Clubhouse on Sunday, 24 September 2017 lived up to the expectations of the sizeable crowd that gathered to take in the activity-laden event. The occasion was a follow up to “The Gerswin Johnson Sport Against Crime Festival” of Saturday, 2 September 2017, where the Club was able to raise enough proceeds to allow chairperson Rodrick Resandt to hand over a Spar voucher to the value of R1000.00 to the Johnson Family. Gerswin’s mom, Carmen could barely contain her emotions on receiving the donation, stating: “We

are so grateful for this amazing gift and the kindness that people have shown us in our time of need. It will really help to ease the pain somewhat that we’ve experienced at the loss of our child. This will ensure we are able to put food in the mouths of our other kids. Thank you so much.” The Heritage Day celebration was also in keeping with the primary mission of the Club to promote softball at all levels, and to further its objective aimed at uplifting the community at large through the delivery of sporting opportunities to the youth in particular. It also speaks to the continuous socially inclusive initiatives being undertaken to garner funds needed to

service its membership base accordingly. After Kleinmond Cllr Fanie Krige officially opened the round of softball games, a potjie and braai competition, karaoke sing-off, raffle draws and a prize giving ceremony followed, before concluding with Titans Coach and Communications Manager, Charmaine Resandt thanking everyone for attending and making the experience such an enjoyable one. She also paid homage to the Kleinmond Rugby Club for providing the venue and the sponsors (Pick ‘n Pay Hermanus, Nutripick, Albertyn Pharmacy Kleinmond, Die Blou Bakkie and Spar Superstore Kleinmond) for their contributions and generosity.
