SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris
Who is Hiring? Everyone! If you are dissatisfied with your current position, then you are in luck. Everyone is hiring and you will get a new position almost immediately. That is good new for you. Bad for your current employer. I caution you that before you go jumping from where you are to your new home, it would be helpful for you to know what it is that you like and dislike about your current employer. This will help you to know what to look for at your new place of employment. Remember that not everyone likes the same thing. As an example, I was talking to one driver who loves the place where they work. I asked, “what is so great about your trucking company?” The driver answered that they give out the dispatch and then they let the driver figure out the rest. This driver loves being their own boss. In this company, if the driver delivers the load on time, dispatch leaves them alone. I ran into another driver that I knew from the same company and asked how things were going. Well, it turns out that they were looking for a new job. Since I had just had the conversation with the other driver about how much they were enjoying this very company, of course I asked why? It turns out that the freedom that the first driver enjoyed was the 12 • OVER THE ROAD
very thing that the second driver hated. The second driver felt that the company was unappreciative. The company gives you the load and expects you to figure everything else out. The driver must schedule the departure time, what route to take etc. This driver called dispatch ‘lazy’. So here are two drivers working for the same company; one was in love with the system and the other was soon to become a past driver. I suggest that before you take any action to move to a new position, you analyze what it is about your current place of work that you don’t like. How about the place you worked before your current employer? You need to do the same exercise for both places - why did you leave there? You need to do a compete review and inventory of the why’s and then try with your new company to find your forever home. Every time that you leave one place and join a new company there is a cost to you and your family. Even if you were able to not miss a day’s work, there is still a financial cost. You are now at the bottom of the seniority list and that costs something. You now need to get used to a new environment and dispatch team, plus new runs, and new destinations. You are unfamiliar with the APRIL 2022
‘ins and outs’ of the new company. These are all items that will have their own small financial impact.
to leave, what highway to take etc. Others want it all done for them, especially if they have never been to that area before.
What do you expect from your new place of work? What questions are you going to ask at the interview? You should ask probing questions. I’m suggesting that you make a list of questions and write them down so that you get to ask the questions that are important to you. Some questions that may be important are around the subject of home time, waiting time, how many days on the road at a time, what are the major routes, and will you have a dedicated route? Make a list of what is important to you. Each driver and family are different - their needs are different. For one person, home time may be the most important thing, for others, it may be all about the earning potential or how many miles they may receive. Each of us are in different stages of our life. Also, do you like planning your own routes? Some drivers do. They want to decide when
Your job when looking for a new home, is to find a company that suits you. It is great to work with friends, but many of our friends want and have different needs. So, my suggestion is to look closely at your current employer and discover what it is that you like and dislike. Make a list of what you want in the new place and then start your hunt. Everyone can find a great home in trucking. The transportation industry is one of the very best places to work. Stay safe out there. MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper
Freedom Convoy cont… Last month’s article was dedicated to the Freedom Convoy and my experiences at it. Though I classify attending it as one of the most heartwarming experiences of my life, it appears the media is determined to paint the event in a very different framework. There are two primary themes the media portrays the convoy as: first, it was a violent (terrorist) event and secondly, it had nothing to do with mandates being lifted. I trust my article last month provides an alternative to the violent narrative. The second impression takes a little more involvement to counter. I have several friends who are deeply involved in politics (current or prior MP’s and MLA’s). From their perspectives it was shared to me that when politicians stated: ‘follow the science’, it referred mostly to following the ‘polls’. In other words, politicians only did what the polls reflected and not what medical science presented. The politicians enforced what the people felt was appropriate, not what the science said it was. When I was first told about this, I was skeptical and held this view as mostly ‘unsupported’. However, during the first week of February, Provinces began dropping mandates like dominoes as the accompanying polls showed a 19/20-point swing in opinion. Early January showed that 35% of the people wanted the mandates dropped and then, 3.5 weeks later, 54% wanted them dropped. Now that is a gigantic swing of opinion. What happened in 3.5 weeks that changed the views of 19/20% of Canadians to want the mandates 20 • OVER THE ROAD
dropped? Well, only one thing happened… the Freedom Convoy. So, when the legacy media now states that the Freedom Convoy had nothing to do with dropping the mandates (or that opinion polls did not influence them either), the assumption is that ‘science’ was the determining factor? The only evidence I can see from press releases at the time was the fact that Israel lifted all COVID travel bans on January 6, 2022, due to Omicron being ‘unstoppable’. Is that the ‘science’ they are referring to? I hope not because Quebec ANNOUNCED a fine for the unvaccinated on Jan 11, 2022, five days AFTER Israel’s LIFTING of travel bans. On February 1, 2022, only four days into the Ottawa protest, Quebec then announced they would be DROPPING the unvax tax, the same day Premier Scott Moe announced all restrictions would end Feb 28th… and then... the Provincial dominoes began falling fast and furiously. I think, trying to keep up with the logic string of legacy media’s ‘political science’ is futile, an exercise of a rabbit hole mentality (Alice in Wonderland had a more scientific experience). This narrative only enforces a distrust and disassociation with legacy ‘information’ providers. I remember an article I wrote a while back which stated “...in a war, the first casualty is always the truth”. There comes a point in time when reputation must be considered when listening APRIL 2022
or reading. Over my life I have tried to minimize or eliminate things that are a waste of time such as: washing my vehicle at 30 below zero, taking to heart political promises, trying to piece together conspiracy theories, or listening to a fool go on and on about his wisdom. My list may be very different than yours, but I think you know what I mean. Lately I’ve been shown more and more that some media pieces make less and less sense. However, if this was the only problem, we could all just learn to filter out these institutions. But alas, the problem is more complex. The perplexing part of polling is the 19/20% swing to dropping the mandates. How can there be such a HUGE swing in such a short period of time? What was going through the participants mind in early January verses early February? Sound logic associates the convoy as the source of change but there was much more ‘requesting’ than ‘scientificating’ (I enjoy inventing new words). I pose that it was more of an emotional attachment to HOPE OVER FEAR than it was the winning of any scientific argument. Though this may sound encouraging to some people, it also has an ominous shadow. Minds that are quickly changed due to emotional association or possibilities alone can generally be quickly changed again through similar non-scientific methods. Thus, in my opinion, the battle for our country’s future is not over when all the mandates are lifted. Our freedom is secured by mature logical and scientific dialog, not through emotional association of hope over fear, or fear over hope. 20% of our population needs to learn to navigate by principles and not by following some crowd whipped up by the media or convoys. Another 20% of
APRIL 2022
our population needs to learn the path of wisdom and understanding rather than the path of simple mass narratives. I place the scope of our nation’s vulnerability square at the feet of our educational system, which has failed to educate the importance of critical thinking and logic in the setting of fair debate. It’s just too simple for people to follow the crowd rather than to develop their own independent thinking. It appears our society needs to grow up (mature) faster, something that is not a necessity in many people’s lives. We simply have it too easy; we have grown too lazy in our affluence. Do we have to go through a major national crisis before we fully engage our cognition? But then again, maybe my natural cynical nature is peeking out in word form. About the Author: Robert D. Scheper is a leading Accountant and Consultant to the Lease/Owner operator industry in Canada. His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most in-depth analysis of the operator industry available today. WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie
Are Men and Women Different? Before you read the title and jump to a conclusion, I want to start by saying that I hope you agree that we are all different. It’s not just about gender, it encompasses so much more such as age, ethnicity, and both mental and physical attributes. I would like you to think about why we sometimes continue to treat everyone the same by avoiding conversations that showcase our differences. Let’s talk about trucking! Studies have proven there are physical and psychological differences between men and women. From stature (the average height of men in the US is 5 feet 9 inches (1.77 meters) and the average woman in the US is 5 feet 4 inches (1.63 meters.) Canadian males are slightly taller as men average 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 meters) but the women are the same as Americans at five feet 4 inches (1.64 meters). For years, truck cab manufacturers designed trucks for men. They didn’t think about the shorter arms and legs that are more typical for women (and short statured men!) Talk to some of the women who have driven for decades, and they’ll share stories about putting blocks on the pedals or sitting on pillows so they could 26 • OVER THE ROAD
see over the dash of the truck. Fortunately, that is changing as the manufacturers are focusing more on adaptability around ergonomics. It’s not about designing trucks for women; it’s about creating an ergonomic cab that allows every driver to be comfortable while driving. In addition to stature, there are other physical qualities that separate us. The most important is estrogen versus testosterone in our bodies. Men in their forties have testosterone levels around 600 and, women typically have less than five percent of that in their bloodstream. What is testosterone? It is a hormone that encourages a focus on winning and demonstrating power. The World Health Organization cited masculinity as being a major factor in risky driving. A recent study in the United Kingdom found that men are more dangerous drivers than women, due to the levels of testosterone in their systems. The term to focus on is risk. Women are driven by estrogen which encourages bonding and connection, which means a more collaborative and team focused environment. Relationships are important! It’s not about winning as much APRIL 2022
as it’s about sharing our experiences and bonding with our sisters and co-workers. We’ve also found that women value their relationships with their carriers and dispatchers much higher than male drivers. The goal here isn’t to claim that men are NOT good commercial drivers. But it is important to note that, due to physical characteristics, women are naturally more risk averse and, someone who avoids risk is someone we should want behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler. In fact, the American Transportation Research Institute found that male commercial drivers are twenty percent more likely to be involved in a crash than women commercial drivers. Before you think that this article is all about featuring women as the ideal driver, there are also studies that have revealed female drivers are more spatially challenged (defined as: in a way that relates to the position, area, and size of things). This means women have a harder time reading a map and backing into a loading dock. Again, I am not claiming that women cannot do this. I am stating that research has proven men have more connections between the left and right hemispheres of their brains, which is associated with spatial ability. Unfortunately, our spatial ability also declines with age, so for those of you in your senior years, we are all experiencing the same challenges, regardless of our gender.
APRIL 2022
Often, people feel uncomfortable when you point out gender (or other physical) characteristics. Wouldn’t it make more sense to try to understand what motivates and challenges people, especially when it can help us create a more inclusive environment? If you want to believe that we’re all the same, go ahead. But if you embrace diversity and inclusion, then take the time to understand and appreciate our differences.
