6 WAYS

You Could Be Saving More Money In Your Business... Maximize Your Training Program with Infinit-i Workforce Infinit-i Workforce was designed to inspire and create behavioural changes in your truck drivers and other employees responsible for the day-to-day operations of your trucking company. Infinit-i Workforce not only gives you access to over 800 training videos, but it also provides the best online training, tracking, reporting, and online driver communication platform in the industry.

1 Streamlined Orientations The average savings for a company who is able to eliminate one day of time a driver spends in orientation by using Infinit-i Workforce, including getting the driver on the road one day sooner, equates to $1008 per driver hired.

2 Improved Fuel MPGs By completing the 26 fuel efficiency videos in the Infinit-i LIbrary, Infinit-i Workforce clients have reported increased fleet MPGs by as much as five percent.

3 Instant Corrective Action Training When a driver receives a violation, or is involved in an accident, it is imperative the driver undergoes corrective action training before they get back on the road. Infinit-i Workforce enables you to assign corrective action training immediately following any driver infraction, getting your drivers back on the road sooner.

866-904-5087 AUGUST 2019

4 Improved Driver Retention According to a recent study, 40% of employees who receive poor job training leave their positions within the first year. With the average cost to hire one new driver at $8,234, improving driver retention rates with ongoing training can substantially improve your bottom line.

5 Decreased CSA Violations CSA violations mean costly fines for your business. A 2014 study found 76.3% of violations should have been discovered during drivers’ pre-trip inspections. Infinit-i Workforce offers short training videos keeping your drivers aware of possible CSA Violations and best practices for pre-trip inspections.

6 Decreased Frequency & Severity Insurance rates are directly tied to the frequency and severity of accidents companies have in a given five-year period. Ongoing training with Infinit-i Workforce has been shown to help decrease frequency and severity of accidents.

WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie

SHARING OUR ROADS For those of us in the trucking industry, we

are well aware that four-wheelers cause most crashes involving a commercial truck. It’s

frustrating for all of us that student drivers to

senior drivers are unaware of the blind spots,

stopping distances and the massive weight of a tractor-trailer.

Every time the Federal Motor Carrier Safety

Administration (FMCSA) creates (or changes) regulations that affect professional drivers, I

hear complaints from drivers that they are the safe drivers and someone needs to educate

the motoring public. These drivers feel as if the rules should apply to all drivers and not just those in 18-wheelers.

What they don’t understand is that the FMCSA CANNOT regulate cars. They were designed to

the “Our Roads, Our Safety” (https://www. fmcsa.dot.gov/ourroads) campaign.

Their first step was to find partners that have a deep understanding of the safety issues

related to operating on our nation’s highways. The Women In Trucking Association (WIT)

(http://www.womenintrucking.org/ ) is one

of those partners but the group is very diverse. The America Bicycling Education Association,

the American Motorcyclists Association, Choose Outdoors, Teens in the Driver Seat and the American Bus Association are a few of the

groups represented. From trucks to buses,

bikes to cycles and everything in between,

there is a common thread that runs through each meeting. How do we educate the motorists sharing our roads?

MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper

Increase Your Trust Score In over eleven years of writing for Over the Road, I’ve never done a book review on a book I haven’t yet finished reading. I don’t advise it and I hope to never do it again, but I’ve been so moved by a section of a book that I’m only 20% finished that I am going to comment. The book is the New York Times bestseller ‘The Speed of Trust’ by Stephen M.R. Covey (son of the author of the book ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’). It should be read as a very personal book. While reading, one should reflect only on their own shortcomings and failures as reading it with a critical eye to those around you will not provide the true benefits of its wisdom. If you have been reading my articles over the last couple of years, you have seen me paint a picture of how both business and personal relationships should work. I’ve written many articles on ethics and integrity. I’ve tried to promote integrity in both our industry and in our/my personal life. I’m in no way implying my life has been perfect. However, I did come to see the benefits of some of the paths that I have taken and the downfalls of others. 16 • OVER THE ROAD

Also, I have learned some lessons from the faults in my own life and some from those around me. As Mr. Covey expounds on trust, he shows how trust reduces cost and increases performance efficiency. Probably the simplest example (not given in the book) is someone going for a loan with either a high credit score or a low one. The high credit score applicant will receive approval much faster and usually at a better cost than the lower (less trustworthy) credit score. As an accountant to over 500 independent operators, I see the difference trust makes within a wide range of scores. I’m not just talking about credit scores but about all factors of life: finances, family, friends and taxes (just to mention a few). In my line of work, I see a lot of trust applications, specifically business finances. After several decades of watching the outcomes of operator’s efforts, I can safely say that those who actively develop trustworthy habits and reputations end up accumulating much higher levels of after-tax wealth than those who cut corners AUGUST 2019

I challenge you to read the book ‘The Speed of Trust’. Take it personally. Read it as a self-help book as I have. I have found ways to be a better leader, husband, father and friend. I encourage you to better yourself, better your neighbour and better your work environment. Increase your trust score.

and fudge on their taxes. It is probably the most counter-intuitive anomaly in the financial industry. Those who confess to having an accident end up getting much more lucrative opportunities than those who hide their failures. However, there are other trustworthy character traits such as, ‘clients who actively give to charity end up with more than those who don’t’. I’m a numbers guy… I’m supposed to show the trail of its benefit… but seriously, I cannot. I can only verify that it is true... those who give will get, while those who take will have less. That’s as best as I can testify to.

About the Author: Robert D. Scheper is a leading Accountant and Consultant to the Lease/Owner operator industry in Canada. His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most in-depth analysis of the operator industry available today. He has a Master degree (MBA) in financial management and has been serving the industry since he and his wife came off the road in 1993. His dedication, commitment and strong opinions can be read and heard in many articles and seminars.

Building trust in both our character and our competence (Covey) will bring long term financial gain, reduce stress, increase capacity and provide more opportunity, bolsters confidence plus a whole host of other benefits. Simply put, it’s just good business. The road to success may be slower at first but as the compound interest of trust multiplies, eventually, it’s hard to keep up with it.

You can find him at www.making yourmilescount.com or 1-877-987-9787.

Hire trustworthy people in both character and competence… but first, make sure you have it yourself. A quality person rarely will stay with an unscrupulous boss or co-worker. Get the right people onto your bus and the wrong ones off. Trustworthy people have a desire to be trusted and will flourish in the right atmosphere. AUGUST 2019

SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Ray J. Haight

Tackling Driver Turnover – Part Seven – The Circle of Success Here we are at the end of this series. If you were to try and follow this process from beginning to end, I would suspect that the whole process would take six to twelve months. If done correctly you should see a substantial reduction in your turnover numbers. The trick is how to sustain and improve your results consistently. When my company went through this and we finally got to 20% annual turnover, we celebrated. But shortly thereafter, we also experienced a bounce where the turnover numbers jumped back up. Nowhere near to where they were when we started but still a concern. This was when we realized that we might have begun to take our successes for granted. So, we decided that we needed to double down our efforts to ensure we never came close to triple digit turnover again and we didn’t. We came in consistently between 20-30% after the initial bounce we experienced. Of course, you can use your judgment on some of this but for your company to avoid this experience; the final section of this series is called the Circle of Success. It is an abbreviated review of most of the milestone moments of the first six sections so in a nutshell, consider some or all of this in your ‘go forward’ strategy. 1. Your leadership team should restate the original commitment to the whole company and at the same time, recognize all the effort that has gone into the gains that the company has achieved to date. This could be arranged as 24 • OVER THE ROAD

a celebrational event making a big splash over the whole process, a chance to recognize the folks who were the stars and to reassure them that the effort continues. 2. E nsure the process is in place to know where you are in the marketplace with Driver and Owner Operator remuneration and make sure that you set your process up in a SOP (standard operating procedures) that repeats itself at a minimum, annually, if not quarterly. You must know where you are always compared to the competition and that that position aligns with your companies ‘go forward’ strategy. 3. H ow much stronger is your commitment to safety and how is this focus reflected in your numbers? Is your safety record central to your input of new Drivers and Owner Operators? How could you further this commitment to safety as this must be at the forefront of your recruitment and retention effort. 4. H ave you entirely built out your communications strategy by filling your company’s rumour mill with all the good things that happen at your business daily? Remember my saying; “I share information with you because I trust you” and, “I don’t share because I am not interested in your opinion, do your job”. People who feel engaged in the workplace will contribute more; they are more productive and will make this effort more successful, that’s a fact.

AUGUST 2019

each video and they have expected outcomes. They also have deliverables, accountabilities and time frames to comply to.

5. H ave you established a recognition program that catches people doing the right things and then rewarding and recognizing it? Nothing is better than to ensure that ethical behaviour is repeated. Everybody including the biggest, toughest truck driver likes to get a pat on the back once in a while. There are folks at your company that do amazing things in their communities, for charities and for your company. Shine a light on those folks and watch them grow.

To ensure things get off on the right foot, the program starts with a full day workshop, focusing on your company’s specific pain points. During the workshop, we also do a high-level strategic planning session where we try and get things kick-started and off on the right foot. Also, we have monthly phone calls with the program sponsor and whoever else might have oversight on the plan. We discuss where things might get hung up, we address unforeseen challenges and how to deal with them and we review the last month’s turnovers numbers to ensure we’re on track. The entire program takes between six and twelve months to get you on the right path depending on your situation with your retention numbers.

6. What information do you share with your people about our industry? There is so much going on at any one time at the city level, county level, state level and federal level. You should assume that your people want to stay up to date with what’s happening in the industry they have chosen to spend their careers. Do you have a process for them to continue their education in any area they have interest in? Making the offer of continuing education is a sign of respect and shows interest in their future and that is good for your business.

I have a personal goal with each of the companies who are in the TCA TPP Retention Project Plan and that is to see them achieve a 33-50% reduction in their overall turnover in the first twelve months, which I know is achievable. How do I know? Because I have seen it and I have lived it. I’ve done it and this is one of the reasons I commit myself to this effort. Our industry deserves better than the turnover numbers we have been plagued with over the past number of decades and it can be beaten.

7. N ow that you’ve completed the program, how are you going to sustain and improve on the turnover numbers you have been able to achieve? You must continue to support your communication strategy and the Communication Action Team. You will need to continue to support the Recruitment and Retention Action Team. You must continue to measure, measure and measure every element of the operations department to find any anomaly that might require attention.

Take good care. Ray J. Haight Ray Haight TCA Retention Coach ray@tcaingauge.com www.tcaingauge.com

Here we are at the end of this series of articles. These teachings are at the root of the TCA TPP Driver Retention Action Plan. The action plan consists of forty-six, three to five-minute videos separated into seven sections described above. There is also a very granular manual; one for AUGUST 2019

SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris

Why Do You Tailgate? Today I am addressing all Truck Drivers. You have a most challenging occupation. It seems like everything is out of your control. While you can often choose your dispatch, you can never control the vehicles around you. Other drivers (especially automobile operators) simply don’t understand what it is that you are trying to do. Of course, we know you are trying to deliver your freight safely, stress-free and on time. You have never gotten up and gone to work, planning to have a crash. That would be crazy and you would never do such a thing. Yet when you tailgate and continually put you and your truck into situations that you know are unsafe, it is similar to planning to have a collision. Each day, maybe dozens of times per day, many Drivers find themselves tailgating. They make excuses for themselves and others regarding their actions. I hear, “It is not my fault. The car took my space away! What, do you want me to do, drive in reverse? Come-on, I have to move forward, or I don’t get paid. You just don’t understand today’s driving”. Does this sound familiar? I know that being a professional truck driver on today’s highway is one of the most challenging occupations. Most Drivers agree that with today’s distracted driving, it seems like everyone on the road is driving with their head attached to a cellular phone. It appears

that no one is looking ahead at the pavement. Even if they are looking forward, their mind is not thinking about driving and is off into some other place. It seems like nobody is driving – everyone is on autopilot. Well if that is true or even just partially the truth, then why do we tailgate? We, as the professional driver, must protect ourselves and drive in a defensive mindset at all times. If we are involved in a crash, even a minor event, it is stressful, time-consuming and it costs money for us (the driver) and our company. Also, the costs of delay in freight shipments are very high and this doesn’t even take into account the other effects such as the slowdown or highway closures and how that affects the overall economy - all the families and companies with people and employees being late or not showing up at all for work that day. So why do we tailgate? Ask yourself that question and ask it every day that you are driving. And then you can ask yourself, is it worth it? Stay safe out there!

Highway Brinkmanship There was a time when driving was a cooperative effort. If someone needed to change lanes, all that was required was to turn on the appropriate signal and other motorists would make room for them. If you were preparing to parallel park, other motorists would wait while you stopped and backed into the space. Today, driving seems to be considered more of a competitive sport. Drivers seem to jealously guard “their” space and resent other road users that dare to get in their way. Sadly, this phenomenon is making its way into the trucking world as well. I’ve lost count of the number of times that I have seen truck drivers signal a lane change and on the third blink, move over regardless of whether there is an opening in traffic. Or tailgating another vehicle to intimidate the other driver to either speed up or move over! However it shows up on the road, all drivers need to question if they want to get involved in this game of highway brinkmanship that seems to be taking hold. Normally relegated to the political arena, brinkmanship refers to a willingness to expose oneself to dangerous events and/or major risk to achieve an advantageous outcome, typically the retreat of the other party. Intelligence rarely plays more than a peripheral role in brinkmanship as the “winner” is the player that demonstrates the most reckless disregard for outcomes.

Richard D. Geller

Director, Safety & Risk Management Services I think that is misguided. After all, if zero risk 200-1479 Buffalo Place is the goal then park the trucks. It’s hardMB, to get Winnipeg, R3T 1L7 more minimal than zero! T : 204-985-1777 F: 204-985-1786 The goal for every driver needs to be to richard.geller@scm.ca

optimize risk within the legal parameters that have been established for the industry. And you do not optimize risk by engaging in an ongoing game of “chicken” with other road users.

Risk is optimized by weighing the expected costs of risky behaviour alternatives (i.e. speeding tickets, maintenance/repairs, increased insurance costs) against the expected benefits of safe behaviour alternatives (i.e. enhancement of reputation, discounted insurance premiums for accident-free driving). The key to all of this is for drivers to determine the ultimate goal or expected benefit. And maybe that requires a mind shift from simply delivering the freight to the larger goal of remembering that somebody, somewhere, is waiting for those running lights to come around the corner and to know that you are safely back home! Rick Geller, CRM Director of Safety and Risk Management Services ClaimsPro Telephone: 204-985-1777 Email: Richard.Geller@scm.ca

Many of the safety managers out there ask drivers to minimize the risk they are taking.
