SAFETY DAWG Chris Harris

TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD! Do you need a break? Are you like me, trying to avoid the news because it is the same news all the time? It seems to me like it has been the same news cast for the past two years! Man, oh Man, I need a break from it all and perhaps you do too. So, this month let’s keep it light and fun. Stay with me here as I am going to go back into my mind and think about my driving days. What did I love about being a truck driver? If some of the things I like and remember are similar to your memories, then please let me know. My first great memory is the sensation of ‘being alone’! Yeah, I really liked being alone, doing my job and having no one to look over my shoulder. The sun would be shining through the windshield, the music was blaring (yes, my favourite tunes) and I didn’t have a care in the world - or so it seemed. It was joyous! Even if my day started out terribly, the sunshine and the music would immediately lift my spirits. Sometimes I long for those days. The second thing I remember with great joy and a smile on my face is ‘going for a beer’. Does it still happen

10 • OVER THE ROAD

today like in my day? Thursdays were always payday and if I happened to be at the terminal on a Thursday evening, somebody would say “let’s go for a beer”. And I was frequently willing. I loved the camaraderie of my fellow drivers while at some local bar swapping stories. Somehow, truck stops weren’t quite the same for storytelling as being in a bar. At the bar, the stories seemed grander and larger than life when told while the music was blasting away. We had fun (and no, I didn’t drink and drive). Believe it or not, the summer that I’m remembering, I didn’t own a car and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) was on strike. I would ride my bicycle to work and home again. And of course, I would only have one or on a rare occasion two beers before I left. After all, I had a family waiting for me at home. My third great memory was ‘the work’ itself. The type of truck driving that I did was very physical - all the freight had to be touched by hand. And during the many hours that summer, it was hot and dirty work. And today I look back at it and think, “man, I was in good shape”. Yes, I didn’t sit behind the steering wheel for FEBRUARY 2022

to help line up their load if they were going into an area that I knew. We always helped each other. I remember those days with a smile.

long hours at a time like many of you. I would drive for an hour or two and then get out and do my pick-ups and deliveries. Yes, it was hard work and yet, somehow, I found it very rewarding. I was proud of my job and of being a truck driver. OK now, here’s my last fond memory. Reading a map book. Yes, I know you probably can’t relate. In my day, the dispatcher would give you a pile of paperwork that included all your pick-ups and deliveries for that route. You then took the paperwork to a quiet area in the warehouse and started looking up the addresses - one by one. You would find where the address was and then in your mind’s eye, you would try and figure out how to get from point A, then to point B, then to C and D. I was exercising my mind with every dispatch. It was great mental stimulation. And then another driver would come over and beg me

Thinking of this was a nice reminder of the beginning of my career. I remember caringly, my supervisor, David Baptiste. He was the man who gave me my first promotion. He was the one that saw something in me that others never saw. So, I remember David with kindness. So now it’s your turn. Send me an email with what you love about your truck driving job. Stay safe out there. Chris Harris Top Dawg, Safety Dawg Inc. 905-973-7056 chris@safetydawg.com @safety_dawg (twitter)

MAKING YOUR MILES COUNT Robert D. Scheper

Our Reputation is Our Choice One of the top 5 events of my life was being in Ottawa from January 28th to Feb 3rd. My opinions, hopefully, on the Freedom Convoy 2022, are not political but observational. Though my wife and I used to drive truck for many years, I’m not a huge fan of traveling. I’m a home body. Additionally, I am not a fan of large crowds. In fact, I get rather claustrophobic rubbing shoulder to shoulder with too many people. I could probably get over this but I’m too cheap to pay for therapy. I also tend to be a general cynic about everyone, thinking people always have an ulterior motive. I’m also a slow decision maker and I try to have my ducks in a row before I do any quacking. I’m also a busy guy and I didn’t want to open a new can of worms… I have several cans of worms still unorganized on my desk. It’s hard to tell sometimes which worm came from which can (have I used enough analogies?). That said, I believe that being a cynic is generally a good muscle to exercise. Simply put, when I heard about the Freedom Convoy, I did not want to go to Ottawa - I wanted to stay at home. I had too many things unfinished and too little time to be ‘curious’ about what might happen politically. On Tuesday, January 25th I gathered a team around me for an emergency meeting. After stating that I didn’t want to go to Ottawa, I made the error of asking the team (by a show of hands) who thought that I should attend. Seven out of seven said I should go. Even though I’m the President, I didn’t 14 • OVER THE ROAD

feel comfortable saying “it’s my way or the highway” … I’m not a Prime Minister; I’m only an owner and President. So, my close friend and I left for Ottawa early Thursday morning (January 27th). By the time the convoy passed Winnipeg (January 26th), it had gathered considerable momentum. A shirtless guy stood out of the top of his moving SUV, holding a freedom sign (his girlfriend driving). Now at 30 below zero, that’s PASSION. The enthusiasm had only begun. Sault Ste. Marie was lined with thousands of supporters at 10 pm, blasting horns and sirens and then again at 6 am the next morning with the temperature at 32 degrees below zero. This passion continued all the way to Ottawa; people showing up at (all the) small towns and at hundreds of roads/streets along HWY 17. The flags, signs and honking never stopped. To best describe in a few short words the Freedom Convoy and what was happening in Ottawa, there is a stark difference between what the media portrayed the event as… and what it really was/is. I have never seen or been in, such a diverse and crowded place and yet felt so accepted and safe (and I was at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary with Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsled team). I have never mistrusted the traditional media as much as I do now. If a newspaper now says the sky is blue and the grass is green, and I need to know what color they are, I will take a pad of paper with a pencil, go outside, look up (at a blue sky), then look down at my feet FEBRUARY 2022

(green grass) and write it down. Their opinion now means nothing to me. To depict the convoy as violent, racist, or even irritated is delusional or more probable, flat-out fraud. I have never seen so many smiling faces and helping hands as I did at the Freedom Convoy. I felt more pride for our country than at any other time in my life. Pride in my fellow citizen; shame in our leadership. The longer it goes, the more convinced I am that it is unstoppable. The hope has now spread beyond our country’s borders. My wife has relatives in Australia, and we saw/ heard of 100’s of thousands of hopeful united Australians. This is just one country of dozens who have been inspired by the truckers in our industry. A very peaceful flame of hope for a world struggling against all forms of fear. I suggest two things: go and see for yourself the atmosphere of those on the street (don’t believe the media), and don’t think/ assume the protest is only truckers (I met more non-truckers than truckers). A small group of truckers may have started it; may have secured it to a non-violent foundation but the protest is about personal freedom and Liberté. It’s about a restoration of our Canadian heritage of goodwill, national trust of our neighbor and restricting the restrictors. It’s an event equal to the felling of the Berlin wall and Gandhi’s Salt March or Salt Satyagraha (March/April 1930). Make no mistake; people will be telling their children and grandchildren they were a part of this event. Testing the temperature of the locals in my area (and others), the enthusiasm is not dying; it is growing organically. It is financed by hundreds of individuals independently and not just a central fund. It has 22 months of fear and frustration fueling antiauthoritarianism. It is a highly disciplined FEBRUARY 2022

movement that has no overt leader other than the united opposition to all restrictions. I would say it’s nearly impossible to ‘control’ independent people except through noble values such as honesty, compassion, inclusion, and reason. A deep sense of honor and nobility is guiding them all. I have said this a hundred times to my friends and family. We are in historic times. History books will write about us and where we stood. Now is the time to protect our good name and reputation. Will we do our part to tear down a brick wall? Will we stand up to oppression? Who do we want to be known as: a British soldier stopping the ‘illegal’ salt makers or a salt maker ‘defying’ an unjust law? About the Author: Robert D. Scheper is a leading Accountant and Consultant to the Lease/Owner operator industry in Canada. His first book in the Making Your Miles Count series “taxes, taxes, taxes” was released in 2007. His firm exclusively serves Lease/Owner Operators across Canada. His second book “Choosing a Trucking company” is the most in-depth analysis of the operator industry available today. He has a Master’s degree (MBA) in financial management and has been serving the industry since he and his wife came off the road in 1993. His dedication, commitment and strong opinions can be read and heard in many articles and seminars. You can find him at www.makingyourmilescount.com or 1-877-987-9787.

WOMEN IN TRUCKING Ellen Voie

The Value in Networking At a Women in Trucking reception, two drivers sitting next to each other discovered that they worked for the same carrier. As they left the event that evening, they vowed to stay in touch and maintain their newfound friendship. These two women knew that they could learn from each other and lean on each other; they recognized the value of networking.

We can all use a little help these days. Whether we’re looking for advice, a career move or just someone who understands our perspective, it’s nice to have someone who is willing to offer that encouragement or guidance. That’s the value in networking.

For some women in the transportation industry, networking often means looking for another female face in a crowd of trucking company executives. For female drivers spending their day in the cab of a truck, networking is even more difficult. With a ratio of ten to one, whether in the truck or the corporate office, women are almost assured of being in the minority at industry events.

In his book, “Never Eat Alone,” Keith Ferrazzi offers his tips on how to utilize the power of relationships to further your career. As you can probably guess by the title, it’s not something that you do on only one occasion; it’s a way of life you adopt to make connections for a lifetime. How can you find value in networking?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines networking as “an extended group of people with similar interests or concerns who interact and remain in informal contact for mutual assistance or support.” Networking is different from many other relationships as the purpose of the interaction is “mutual assistance or support.” In other words, networking has a purpose.

18 • OVER THE ROAD

So, how can you become more connected?

First, determine what you want from your interactions. What is your mission? Are you thinking about expanding your fleet, or are your sights set on climbing the corporate ladder? Write down your goal and identify who can help you reach that ambition and then start networking. Be aware of industry leaders and others who can help you become more successful in your career aspiration. Ferrazzi suggests that you expand your networking circle by looking for people he

calls ‘connectors’ or those who can help you link to ‘important’ people. Connectors can be anyone but are usually people who meet or have contact with large audiences, such as fundraisers, journalists, and restaurant owners. Make sure that you provide value to others so that you have something to offer in the networking relationship. Be willing to share your knowledge, time and resources and people will be more than happy to reciprocate. Ferrazzi reminds us to never keep score. However, you will develop relationships much more quickly if you aren’t expecting something each time that you have given your time or resources. This also means that you should reach out to others, even when you are not in need of their advice or assistance. You never know when your turn will come. Successful networking also means that you pay attention to details. Write down names so that you can remember them and be sure to note something distinctive about that individual. Did they win an award, overcome a challenge or do they have an unusual hobby? Write it down and ask them about this when you meet. You’ll endear yourself and create more trust when you show an interest in your networking partner. Stay in touch and always follow up when you promise to get back to someone. Ferrazzi calls these follow ups “the key to success.”

expect it. Learn how to chat with charm, as small talk is the way people create bonds and build trust. Watch the other person’s body language and learn to read nonverbal cues. Be interesting and credible, and let the other person know that you are willing to add value to their career by sharing your time and energy to help them become more successful. The two drivers who found that they worked for the same carrier learned that one of the benefits of being a member of an association, such as Women In Trucking, is the opportunity to network. Finding value in networking will help you become more successful in your career. Consider Ferrazzi’s advice and look for people and opportunities to network, and remember, never eat alone. Ellen Voie President/CEO/Founder of Women In Trucking, Inc. ellen@womenintrucking.org www.womenintrucking.org

Mission: Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry.
